Today, a small earthquake tore through the desert. It was more a nuisance than it was life threatening, since only light things, like teepees, were knocked down. It had also increased the pressure on some groundwater, which liquefied some sand, creating quicksand.

It was just Kai's luck that she would wander right into this quicksand. "Don't panic. Everything is going to be fine." This was far easier said than done. Even after she said that, she was shaking in her boots.

Then, she looked down and saw that she was just up to her knees and that not only was she not sinking further, but her body was bobbing up and down in the quicksand instead. She sighed in relief and said, "I'm floating. That's a good sign."

Now, she looked around to see if there was anything in reach that she could use to pull herself on dry land. She saw some branches from a dead tree, but sadly, they were just out of reach. She paddled towards them, but she only moved a few inches, before the pain became too much to bear. "Darn, I'll have to break down and do it then... HELP! PLEASE! I'm stuck here!"

It wasn't often that Kale traveled to the desert, however since becoming a full fledged Knight he decided to travel farther than he normally would. One could never know when or where his services would be needed and so he came to where he had rarely stepped foot. He had received word from a passing Soquili that there had been a small earthquake in the area earlier. Kale was glad to know this and began to search even more now. Though it was a small earthquake that didn't mean that he wouldn't necessarily be needed. Perhaps some foals would be upset over the shaking. Or an individual might have gotten lost in the confusion. Either way he would be around to help wherever needed, and should no one need help, well then he would simply speak with locals, gain more knowledge about the desert and let them know he was willing to help them at any time.

"HELP! PLEASE! I'm stuck here!"

Those words brought Kale to an instant stop as he listened to see which direction they were coming from. Turning slightly Kale began to gallop. "I'm coming!" He announced. He would help whoever was in trouble. It didn't take him long to reach the mare trapped in the quicksand, though he was smart to keep his distance. Wouldn't do them any good if he also ended up in the quicksand. "Don't worry." He told the mare in a calm voice. I will help you." She didn't seem too deeply stuck and she wasn't sinking either which was a blessing. "Are you uninjured?" He asked, as much as he knew she needed to be freed it was also important to know of any possible injuries.

Now the next problem, how to get her out. He couldn't just walk up and push her out, that would just get them both stuck. He say the dead tree nearby but she just wasn't close enough to reach it. Then it struck him. Reaching behind him Kale pulled the blanket off of his back, a gift from his mentor for graduating from knight training. He was fortunate to have it. Slowly he stepped forward inching closer and closer until he reached the point where if he got any closer the quicksand would consume him too. Holding on tight to the one end of the blanket Kale flicked it out towards the mare. "Grab onto this, I'll pull you out." He said around the blanket.

Kai's ears perked up. She heard galloping! Someone was coming! She smiled and thought, Oh, glorious day! Someone must've heard me and now, he's here to help me. Her heart raced in joyous anticipation.

Then, something else came to mind. Either that or that's a Skinwalker who is planning to eat me. They do like to prey on the vulnerable, now, don't they? As if my luck could get any worse. She rolled her eyes and sighed after that.

Her fears were allayed when she saw the stallion that had come to her aid. He looked like a rainbow when he galloped over to her and he got straight to the point, instead of dilly-dallying, which she appreciated. "Yes, I don't have any injuries. I'm just exhausted and two of my legs are awfully cramped."

When he offered her his blanket, she grabbed onto it tightly with her teeth and pulled herself onto dry land again.

This was a new feeling. Her mane and tail were disheveled and her legs were soaking wet and caked with mud. It felt as if there was a great load on her shoulders and her legs felt like they had been swapped with the trunks of giant sequoias.

It felt like she had to take great pains just to look directly in front of her at her savior. Why am I so tired? In between pants, she said, "Thank you so much, sir." Then, "Please call me Kai. To whom do I owe the pleasure of speaking to?"

Kaleidoscope was more than relieved to hear that she was uninjured. While he could help her out of the quick sand he was sadly lacking in healing abilities and what few plants he knew about healing wise did not grow in the desert. This situation made him realize that he would need to gain more healing knowledge in the future if he was to truly serve the Soquili in this land. It didn't matter that healing wasn't generally a knight duty, he needed and wanted to learn anything that could be of assistance. Now however was not the time to dwell on these thoughts or let them distract them from his current mission.

With a tug of the blanket to make sure the mare was completely free from the quick sand Kale took a few steps back to give her room to breath. She didn't look too bad, a little dirty but that could easily be fixed with a bit of water. The fact that she was injury free and now free from her sandy capture was the truly important thing. "You are most welcome, I live to serve others." As she introduced herself he bowed his head in greeting. The means of their initial meeting had meant that he skipped the introduction part and went right to work, now it was time to correct that. "It is a pleasure to meet you Kai. I am Kaleidoscope, though you may call me Kale." Placing his blanket on his back once more he looked at the mare once more. "Are you from these parts? I myself was merely passing through though it seems quite fortunate that I did." Had he not stumbled upon her who knows how long she would have been stuck before another came upon her.

"Perhaps you should rest a bit." Kale suggested after noticing how winded and tired the mare was. It would do her no good to try to move too much until her energy had been restored. "I believe there was a shady spot not too far from here, we could go there if you are able to make it, though I must insist that you only move if you feel up to it. You used up a lot of energy in that quick sand." She would likely need a drink as well though being unfamiliar with the desert Kale wasn't too sure where he could find a source of water that wasn't a great distance away.
