Just how long had she been traveling now? Weeks, if not months. She needed to return, to see what had become of everyone and of her home. Yet a small fear had gripped her. What if she returned and there was nothing left? Outside of these weeks of traveling on her own Aleu had only ever known herd life. She had heard and passed on many stories of what lay outside their well-protected borders but until not she had never believed she would be experiencing it. The stories she could gather out here was what kept her going instead of returning home. One day she would make it home. But for now she traveling seeking out stories and searching for others of the herd.
Tipping her wings Aleu decided to take a break from flying and travel the old fashioned way by land. Landing softly and quietly the grey mare folded her tired wings at her side and began to walk softly humming a tune to herself. Funny how no matter where she went everywhere reminded her of home. All forests kind of looked the same from above, just like how they looked similar while on the ground. Meadows were just large expanses of grass. The rivers and lakes that broke up the land were all the same as well. Yet these similarities held differences as well. The ground was pleasantly soft here, where as back home it was hard packed soil. A bird chirped in a tree above her and Aleu adjusted her humming to match that of the birds song.

Moaleit was..... Well one could say she was wandering, but she really wasn't doing that. Or perhaps walking because she was certainly doing that, but it was more than that. It was a wander walk with sauce. Moaleit picked up her hooves high in a parade trot. She tossed her head so her mane flipped just so. Beauty, that's what she was.
The mare paused with two feet of the ground as a bee buzzed by. She watched it curiously then turned to follow it. Not like she was in a hurry to go anywhere. Moaleit followed it for awhile then lost it through the trees. Now which way should she go? Her ears twitched as she thought she heard humming. She shook to head 'til her ears flopped then listened again. All she heard were the birds.
"Hello? Mister birdy? Can I listen to your song?"

Aleu was surprised to see the red mare between the trees not far away. This was just another reminder that she was not the highly trained warrior that she should be. Anyone else from the herd would have seen the mare coming long before now. Even so at least she would get a chance to talk to another. Traveling kept her to herself most of the time. As she continued humming the bird song Aleu began to make her way through the trees towards the unicorn mare.
"Hello? Mister birdy? Can I listen to your song?"
The mares voice reached her and the smile that formed on Aleu's lips momentarily interrupted the flow of her humming. Though she picked it up again and stopped not far from the mare before bringing her humming to a stop. "I'm afraid I'm not a bird, but I believe it was me that you were hearing just then."

Moaleit nearly sat back on her haunches in surprise. It wasn't a bird that came out, but a winged soquili. "Oh! You're not a bird or a mister." She ducked her head blushing for a moment. "You had a pretty song there. Would you sing it again?" The mare admired the feathers in the other's mane and tail. She twitched her tail self-consciously. Maybe hers didn't have adornments but hers was two-tone. And so what if she didn't have a cascade of lovely hair on her tail? She didn't have to keep brushing hers out.
"So what brings you out here?"

Aleu let out a snort of a laugh. "And I am so very grateful that I am not the latter." Being mistaken for a bird was acceptable to her, but she would be terribly upset to be of the wrong gender. She would not fault the other mare for assuming the bird call was from a male bird, after all many male avian had the more beautiful songs than their female counterparts anyways. The bird she had been mimicking was of a neutral color so even Aleu wasn't entirely positive if it had been a male or female. "Of course I will." She began to hum the tune once more, only to be replied to by a bird a few trees away. When she stopped a smile crossed her lips once more. "Of course the song is not my own, simply borrow from the birds."
She paused for a moment listening to the song of the forest, birds, squirrel, leaves rustling, it was all music to her and then she glanced back at the mare. "I am traveling at the moment. Gathering stories as I go. Eventually I will be returning to my herd. And you? Do you live in these parts?"

The mare giggled. Nobody wanted to be mistaken for a male. She found herself liking this winged soquili. Even more so when she agreed to hum some more. It would be nice to learn to do that. Moaleit didn't think she stayed in a place long enough to learn the birdsongs. Her head bobbed with the tune. She looked at the bird as it replied back. That really was nice.
"I'm Moaleit." she introduced herself. "No, I am passing through, wandering, traveling. Whatever you'd like to call it. What kind of stories are you looking for?"

"Moaleit." She dipped her head in greeting. "It is good to meet you. I am Aleutian Ballad, though most call me Aleu for short." Her name was long and some had a hard time remembering it so she didn't mind at all when it was shortened. So this mare was also traveling through the area. Perhaps she knew stories or even some more lay of the land than what she had seen so far. The stories were important and it seemed that she had the mare attention for the moment.
"Well really any kind of story. Anything from epic tails to something funny that has happened, I will accept any stories." The more stories she returned home with the better, though the most important stories of all were tucked away in her memory and spanned many years of time, an entire history worth of stories. Of course that also made her think of her herd and that lead to a question. "I'm wondering, in your travels have you seen a pair of mares? One pale colored, the other darker. They both wear many decorations on them, the darker one wears a small pelt on her head with horns on it." There was a chance, as small as it was, that this mare may have seen the pair in her travels and if she had then perhaps she could finally rejoin them.

"Alue, a pleasure to meet you. That will be easier." Moaleit wondered what the mare was traveling through the area for. If she was looking for stories, there didn't seem to be enough soquili in the area to get many. Still she thought back seriously, making her nose twitch. Did she have any good stories to pass onto the nice mare? "Oh I can't think of anything interesting enough to pass on. I'm sorry." She dug a hoof embarrassedly into the ground.
Again she had to think hard. She hadn't encountered many soquili. "I'm afraid I haven't. Is there anything wrong?" Alue could be looking for them or trying to warn her to stay away from them. It was best to find out.

What a shame that the mare had no good stories to share. But not everyone could be as adept at telling or acquiring stories as others. There would likely be other Soquili along her journey that could provide her with such things. Heck just thinking about this mares lack of stories was giving Aleu and idea about a new story, one about a Soquili who had done so little in their lives that they became forgotten even to themselves. More details would be worked out as she continued her travels but for the moment she smiled. Even though she may never know it this mare had given her a story. "It's alright." She assured Moaleit. "You are not the first I have encountered that had none to share."
Aleu gave her head a bit of a shake. "Oh no, nothings wrong. They are simply members of the herd I am from. I have not seen them in some time and was curious to know if they by chance passed through this way." Perhaps she was traveling in the wrong direction or the pair had simply passed through before Moaleit came by. Either way she would track down the two and see what had become of the herd.

Moaleit gave a tentative smile. Alue must have an exciting life to have lots of stories. "If you don't mind, I would love to hear a story or two. I can walk with you and listen since I don't mind my direction." It seemed she oftened traveled alone with nothing but herself and animals to listen too. Having company and pleasant conversation would be a boon.
"Oh I will keep my eyes and ears out for them, and tell them you are looking should I run across from them." What would life be like in a herd? You certainly wouldn't be alone! She smiled.

"I would never turn down the chance to share a story. And I must admit having a temporary travel companion would be nice." Alue began to walk again, making sure Moaleit was coming before figuring out what kind of story to tell. Honestly she knew so many that it was hard to choose. There were stories about adventure, romance, foal antics and nearly every other subject one could imagine, and then there were also stories about her herd. Glancing over at the red mare Aleu smiled a bit sheepishly. "I am having a hard time picking a story to tell. Do you have any preference in what kind of story you would like to hear?" If Moaleit didn't then Aleu would manage to pick something to entertain them for the walk.
"It would be great if you could let them know I'm looking for them, if you happen by them of course." Anyone she met along the way could help spread the word to her lost herd mates that she was out here searching and working her way back home. She wasn't sure of how long of a journey it would be, but surely along the way someone would either know where they were or she would bump into them directly and things would take a turn for the better once more. For the time being however she was quite happy to have Moaleit to keep her company, even if it was only for a little while, and to share the knowledge and stories she had gathered over the years with the mare. Even this encounter would turn into a story one day, but as it was currently happening Aleu did not quite know all of the events nor the ending of this particular story, so she would pay attention, listen and form it later.

Moaleit pranced at the prospect of a story. She nodded her head eagerly in agreement. It always seemed she went faster when she had company than when she was alone. The mare bounded like a foal as she followed along with Alue. She didn't say anything as she waited for her to decide which one to pick. Her head tilted. Ooooo she got to pick? She bounded a few steps ahead then looked back.
"Tell me something funny!" She loved funny stories. "Of course I'd tell them. I bet they'd want to know."

"A funny story hm?" Aleu thought as they walked together what story she knew that was funny. Not much funny happened in the herd but she was certain she could think of something. It took a little while before Aleu had decided upon a story that Moaleit might enjoy and consider funny. "Well let's see here..." The mare considered one possibility but then shook her head, no that story wasn't funny. What could she tell Moaleit? Aha! She knew a good story to tell.
"Ah here's a good one, though perhaps a bit embarrassing for me." Aleu gave a slight chuckle before beginning. "Well this all happened shortly after I began my warrior training in the herd. I knew that fighting wasn't in me, but we all had to learn to fight so that we could serve our Queen. So I showed up everyday for training no matter what. The head warrior didn't like me cause she knew my heart wasn't it it, but she trained me nonetheless expecting perfection out of us. We had just been broke up into pairs to do some practice sparring...it was my least favorite part of training." She said glancing over at Moaleit as they walked. "The filly I was up against was made to be a warrior, large, strong, determined to show the head warrior she had what it took. Well I was scared and when the filly came at me I started backing up instead of attacking like I was supposed to. I could hear the head warrior yelling at me but I ignored her and felt backing up. Problem was in the forest there isn't a lot of room to do what I was doing. So as the filly came after me again I rearing up, flaring my wings in an attempt to take flight though I wasn't quite at the age I could fly."
Aleu paused remembering that day with a shake of her head, slightly embarrassed to continue on. "Well the filly wasn't backing down, and I had no where to go. Her kick landed on me and when I went to move again I realized the tip of my wing had gotten stuck in the tree branches above me. I screamed like I had been captured by the most evil creature ever. The filly I was sparring with nearly fell over she was so unsure what to do, she thought she had kicked me too hard, but it was my fear that had gotten my into that position. It took the head warrior a short time to untangle me from the trees. Boy she was not happy with me, and of course made an example out of my mistake. I never did that again." Aleu glanced over at Moaleit a small smile on her lips. "I'm not sure if that was the type of funny story you were hoping for, but looking back on it it sure feels funny to me."
