The sun hung rather high in the sky and the world itself seemed to just be lazily rolling along. A few clouds drifted over head and a languid breeze scattered a few leaves every now and then but all in all, the world around Sarin was still. There was still a slight chill to the air but it was clear that warmer months were on the way. There was that sense of new life in the air, just waiting under the surface to bubble over and pull the world into a wake splendor.

However for right now things were still mostly lazy, though a few creatures were already well on their way to being twitterpated. It amused Sarin to watch the few creatures that were about. They were so active and bouncy making her blanch slightly but it amused her none the less. She had never been a very active creature and extraneous activity made her just ill, she got tired even thinking about it.

She curled her tail lightly letting it fade in and out of existence as she lazed in the tree she had claimed for her mid morning nap. She hadn’t been awake very long and was honestly starting to get a bit hungry but she didn’t really wish to move. Moving was such a hassle though there was a niggling in the back of her mind today. She was… almost playful. Perhaps if the chance arose she would play just a bit but seeing as how all of her family up and vanished she wasn’t sure what to do.

She was arguably defenseless without her father, mother, brother or Fluff around to protect her. Though it was hard to see one who had the ability to call up poison at will as defenseless; still it wasn’t like she had had to fight a day in her life. No, Sarin was much to spoiled for anything like that. She gave a soft sigh as he stomach grumbled and slowly oh so pitifully slowly she stood and arched her back in a typical cat like stretch.

It appeared she would have to go out and actually get something herself. She yawned at that and shook herself off slightly. Hunting… how droll perhaps she could just stop by someone’s house and pilfer. That seemed like a much more pleasant idea instead of hunting, she was just about to drop from her tree when something moving in the distance caught her attention. She blinked and plopped her bottom back down on the branch... could it be? Was this perhaps her saving grace?

User ImageThe briefest ray of warmth from the aloof, distant sun was the tiniest, teasing taste of warmer months soon to come. Here and there, in shady hollows or sheltered beyond shaded stones, tiny piles of snow still gripped the ground in a futile last stand, and where the snow had been brushed away, ice still formed where spring's puddles would collect. The breeze blew through the woods, as if limbering up for a roaring March. The leaves danced before the restless breeze, scattering with soft sounds of the dry death of winter. Bare twigs whispered gently against each other, as if in shock of the suddenly milder weather. The noon sun cast shadows upon the tiny snowpiles like light through a stained-glass window.

Thrice was stepping in every one of the piles, stomping them out until the surly white turned brown with dirt and crumbled, dead leaves. Her hooves left little marks, and everywhere she went, she would try to break the dark ice. It was still January--late January--but it looked like an early spring might be in store for them. Many of the birds had not yet returned, and the ground was still brown--here and there gold where leaves of brighter trees had tumbled to Earth--and the green shoots had not yet broken the ground. Still in all, it was clear that winter's hold was loosening on the world, and all of life would soon be merely dozing in the early afternoon sunlight. For now, the birds and the other fauna that were awake where active. Early birds, literally in some cases. Thrice normally didn't understand that. She was by nature and by habit a "night owl," clinging instead to the dark and the bright lights and excitement offered by the night. Colors seemed brighter, activities and sights seemed more surreal under the unblinking stars.

Their own star wasn't blinking much, either. Normally, that would mean it was hot, but it was mostly chilly, just barely tolerable without a scarf or coat or something. Maybe it was in defiance of the weather, or a willingness for winter to pass, that goaded Thrice into stomping through the underbrush to melt the snow. Either way, Thrice was enjoying herself, despite the lack of sleep the night before. It seemed too nice a day to sleep away, anyway, so a stroll through the woods had seemed appropriate, especially after weeks of staying inside due to snowdrifts and cleaning. Thrice normally enjoyed the snowy weather of winter, but this year she had felt more restless than usual.

She paused in her snowpile massacre to glance into the trees. She'd gotten the strange feeling that someone--or something--was watching her. She searched the trees, but could see nothing unusual. Nothing unusual but a patch of light pink in the distance. Curious, Thrice left the snow alone to trot towards the pink mass up the tree. Who knows? Could be a friend! Or someone who needs help! Or just someone to talk to. I'm a social person, after all.

Sarin sat watching with intense interest as the other… female approached. She sniffed the air again, she was positive it was a female and… a deer perhaps? She sniffed the air again her tail dangling down behind her the tip end of it twitching as she thought. She couldn’t tell much else aside from that, just that it was female and that she smelled faintly like a deer. It was curious for her to say the least. She watched as the general blob of white took shape and became more defined as she approached.

Slowly, she could make out ears and tiny antlers atop the femme’s head. From there she could make out not one, not two, but three tails splayed out gloriously behind the antlered female. She perked greatly her ears swiveling forward to listen to the sounds of the female’s approach. How lovely it would be to lay curled in all those tails. She did so love lying curled in Mr. Fluff’s tails. His tail was just so large and fluffy and so very soft unlike her parents. To think there were people that had three tails, it reminded her vaguely of her father’s boa. She loved lying in that boa, she loved lying in general but the soft warmth was to die for.

Sarin in her oh so pleased state slipped from the tree, she was nothing more than a languid coil of muscle as she landed. She arched and yawned lightly her tail swaying in both pleasure and curiosity. It was one of the few ways you got any sort of real excitement out of her, when she was curious about something or someone. She started towards the other female, though the other wasn’t far off at all now, stopping only when she noticed the slightly icy ground. She wrinkled her nose and lifted a paw in distaste at the chill from the earth. She was a short furred creature after all with slightly cold blood due to her mother.

“How… unfortunate.” She grumped slightly before her eyes were drawn back to the other with the sounds of movement. Slowly she pulled her attention from the frigidness of her paws and moved to face the other female, walking around her in a complete circle before coming face to face with her once more. “You have hooves.” She noted with interest leaning down to sniff at them her ears perked. “So you are a deer?” She said looking up at the fox like creature with interest. Her nose hadn’t been mistaken, or at least not completely, she did in fact have deer parts meaning she most likely had some deer in her. Sarin however didn’t quite grasp the fact that this was considered rude, if not a bit pushy. Though it was clear she meant no offense just by her general posture and curious look.

The pink shape in the tree uncurled languidly from the tail, pooling onto the ground as if its skeleton were made of gelatin. Thrice watched the stranger with a raised eyebrow. A cat-noodle. She'd seen quite a few of them around lately. She lived with a couple, so she wasn't that surprised, but there was something distinctly...eerie about the stranger. Something otherworldly and else about her. Thrice wasn't sure if she liked that. She especially didn't like being circled by a complete stranger, but she'd long since gotten used to the tendency of cats to do that. I wish I knew why. I thought Sab did it because everything is new and fascinating to him due to his...um, past. Or is it just feline curiosity? Either way, Thrice wished they would stop that, and not just out of "prey instinct."

Because she wasn't a deer--well, okay, she was, even if she had fox tails (at least she had hooves--most deer-foxes didn't), but she wished, oh how she wished, that people would stop treating her as special just because of it, as if she were something to be gawked over. She wasn't a freak! And she didn't think people were calling her a freak, or thinking of her as a freak, but she hated the implication that she was special just because of her...unusualness. I love my tails and I love my body, but please don't treat me as an object of fetish!

Worse than that was what the female had said, with a look of disgust on her face. Thrice's nose wrinkled in returned disgust. Who the hell does she think she is?! The thick fur on the back of her spine bristled angrily. How unfortunate yourself! I came here to be friendly, you didn't have to be prima-donna to someone you randomly meet in the woods! Suddenly, the twittering of birds and the winter sun became unbearable, and she just wanted to go back to bed.

"Yes, I have hooves. And I'm a deer. The sun is in the sky and the forest is made out of trees. Any other obvious facts you'd like confirmed?" she asked sarcastically. The curious look on the stranger's face did nothing to mollify the little deer's offense.

Sarin was quite taken aback when the other one spoke and her voice had a slight bite to it. Her ears fell back against her head and she took a few steps back. She had never been greeted so rudely by someone before. It made her feel a bit… scolded honestly. She wasn’t sure what she had done to upset the female in the first few moments of their meeting. It confused her a touch to say the very least.

“Ah, um… well.” She shook her head and gave a slight huff. “The fact you were a deer wasn’t obvious to me.” She stated with a slight glare at the other female before shaking her head. “Forgive me for not knowing instantly if my nose was correct, and it came as a surprise to me that you were a deer because you have such fluffy tails. Not to say that deer’s don’t but they don’t typically have three large fluffy tails. I found it as a bit of an oddity and of interest. I was simply musing out loud.” She snapped just slightly her tail flicking this way and that before falling invisible at the tip.

“I didn’t realize it was such the touchy subject or that you were quite so rude.” She gave a light growl before turning around and skittering back up her tree to curl up on the branch at the base like a scorned cat. The invisible part of her tail had spread up nearly half her tail now and was slowly inching its way towards encompassing it all. She was simply glaring down at the other femme, her ears pinned back and her fur bristled slightly. It was clear that this deer was not at all her saving grace and that she was just a rude little vixen that needed to go on her way.

It was clear that the stranger was offended at her offense. Greaaaaaaaaaaat. A stand-off. Thrice hated those. She liked things to be clear, obvious, easy to see, nothing that could be misinterpreted. Maybe we got off on the wrong start--and wasn't her tail longer a few seconds ago? Thrice closed her eyes, counted to twenty-five, then opened them again. As she did, she inhaled deeply, then exhaled. The exercise had a calming effect on the normally good-tempered vixen. "I apologize for my rude tone," Thrice said. "I've just...There seem to be a lot of individuals around the shop right now who are interested in deer-foxes to the point almost of fetishes, and I don't like being treated like that. Not that I think you were doing that, but it was a...a reflex reaction." She curled her tails around herself and planted her rump on the ground. She looked up into the tree at the stranger. Wasn't that just like a cat?

And isn't that a hypocritical thing to say, when I'm complaining about being judged as a deer and not as a fox? "As for my tails, I inherited them from my mother," she said. "One of them, that is. Argent, I think. I don't know many other foxes with more than one tail, but I am lead to believe that there are a few with more than one tail. And I suppose I am the only deer-fox with a long tail. But I assure you, I am a deer nonetheless." Only one way to finish patching this up. For all her wild nature, Thrice did not like holding a grudge.

"I am Thrice Eyeraep Hotdamn," she said. If the other was offended at her name, then so be it. She didn't care. "I don't believe I've met you before, but then, I haven't been out and about much lately. You must be one of the new arrivals." There had been a lot of those in the past few months. In just the last six months, there must have been at least ten new arrivals at her house. Amazing how the place grew so quickly! Thrice didn't recognize the stranger from her appearance or features, so she was willing to bet that the stranger was a "first-gen," someone whose parents did not live near the shop.

Sarin’s fur slowly began to flatten as the vixen apologized. Her ears perked forward and her temper shifted to a calmer one. She wasn’t by nature wound up or angry, it took far too much effort to be those things. She wasn’t one to stay angry over the little things, it really did just take too much effort and too much of her time. That and she was still quite curious about this female and did wish to know what was up with her. Of course as the other female explained what had been happening to her as of late she gave a gentle ‘hmmm’ sound before dipping her head in understanding.

“I see I apologize as well if I came off as rude.” She remembered Fluff telling her something about if she wanted people to do things for her then she needed to empathize with them and try to understand how they felt. She attempted to put herself in Thrice’s shoes. How would she like to be seen as a fetish… she shook her head. That didn’t sound pleasant.

“I apologize; I did not mean to come off like that. For that wasn’t at all what I was meaning. You see, aside from my family you are really the first other noodle I have met. Well and Selee. None of them have antlers or hooves. I have… admittedly never seen someone quite like yourself. I was, curious and interested to say the least. I didn’t mean to objectify you or make it seem like you were nothing but a mere fetish.” She stated with a slow smile, she was sure both Fluff and her mother would be extremely pleased with her polite… negotiating… was that right? Negotiating skills… she wasn’t sure if that was the correct word but it sounded right. She had shown such initiative, such tact, and such skill in her verbal expression.

She listened intently to the other before giving a small nod. “I see, I have never seen anyone with three tails, all of my family has long sleek tails like mine. Aside from my mother who has a long sleek tail with lots of stringy fur, and Fluff has a large fluffy one. I think yours are pretty, and to think there are three they must be very warm and comfortable.” She stated with a rather longing sigh at that. It would be just wonderful if she had that many large fluffy tails. To think how comfortable it would be to just lay all curled up in them.

She slowly slipped back out of the tree to sit in front of the other female; stopping for only a moment to look at the ground and hiss in distaste. “Blasted freezing ground.” She grumbled before looking back at the other female. “I’m Sarin Airay , it’s nice to meet you… Thrice. Would you mind if I shortened it to that? Thrice Eyerape Hotdamn is quite the mouth full. Interesting though.” She mused softly before blinking and then nodding.

“Actually yes, I’m still rather young and thus I suppose I would be new to the area. That and my family and I spend much of our time out by ourselves and less time with the rest of the populace.” She said flicking her tail in pleasure.

Thrice nodded, her expression and tone guarded. "I accept your apology. You were not to know my own personal biases." The stranger's hackles had gone down and her words were tactful and diplomatic, but there was still something about her that rubbed Thrice entirely the wrong way. She took a step or two back, keeping her tails wrapped close around her. Maybe it was the way the vixen lounged, or the way she smiled slowly.

Or, maybe it's the way she started talking about my tails like they're a fur coat she wants to wear. Thrice took more deep breaths to keep her tone level and calm. "I like my tails," she said. "They're warm." Briefly, she debated the merits of casually mentioning Damian. Damian...oh, Damian... No. I'm not mentioning him. That boat has sailed, long since. But still, there was something to say for telling someone that a vampire might get offended if they got too...personal. Judging by this young lady's...self-confidence...however, that would probably have no effect. She'd probably just laugh it off and demand a snuggle anyways. It took all of Thrice's effort to keep her face blank and her frame relaxed. If worse comes to worse, I still have fox teeth and I have sharp antlers and hooves. All the stranger had was sharp teeth and probably claws and--had she turned invisible earlier?!

She shoved that to the back of her mind and concentrated on the matter at hand. The distaste with which the other female regarded the ground proved that the earlier disgust had not been directed at her, but at the inclement weather. Thrice felt a twinge of guilt at misinterpreting that, but she shook it off mentally. "You can call me any of those three names you'd like," she said. "Most people choose Thrice. My mother prefers 'Eyeraep,' though, but that's her personal opinion. She's a bit odd." And that was putting it mildly.

Okay, so her family's in the area. That makes her second-gen at best. It also made her a lot younger than Thrice.

Sarin smiled as she was assured her apology was accepted. Well then that just made everything perfectly fine right? Of course it did. She let her tail sway out behind her as she listened to the other female and nodded. “I like mine too.” She stated looking back at her tail. “Though sometimes it seems it has a mind of its own.” She said walking in a half circle to put a paw on her own tail which flicked out from under her paw seemingly of its own accord which led to Sarin bolting after it. She for a few moments chased her tail in circles until she managed to catch it between her teeth. At which point she looked triumphantly at Thrice.

Slowly her tail shifted to being invisible her stripes seemingly coming undone. “It always gets away.” She shook her head before looking back at Thrice. “Oh, I see, she is a bit odd. Well I could call you Hottie but that you might take the wrong way and get offended. Which I really wouldn’t want to do again. Despite my mischievous ways my mother did teach me manners and she would be appalled to know I was out misusing them.” She stated giving a light wink and then a small giggle.

Her stomach gave a low grumble and she huffed annoyed. She was still hungry but she felt excited almost and curious. This female was most entertaining and it made her… active. She was almost never active unless something caught her interest or she had slept for three days. It was clear she was slightly wound up like any cat she had her moments.

However she did realize it was probably time to go find some sort of food source. This she had to think about, she was facing a deer so hunting rabbits or something probably wouldn’t be the best option. She didn’t want to nibble on leaves or the like so that left going into town which she didn’t do often as it wasn’t one of her favorite pastimes. There was always the chance someone would run into her or get distracted and interested in her tail. Or on some of the more horrible cases insist she try and teach them how she did all her magic tricks. She supposed that was why as soon as she hit adult hood and didn’t have to follow her mommy or daddy everywhere she simply stopped going with them into town.

It left her at an impasse, she didn’t want to leave this female and she didn’t want to go into town. What a bother this was. She gave an exasperated sigh and shook her head ears laying back in distaste. Whelp only one thing to do. “Want to go get something to eat?” She asked smiling.

Thrice struggled to keep a straight face as Sarin started to chase her tail. It was either that or struggle with the desire to both roll her eyes and laugh. Either way, it was probably a very bad move. She shifted her weight a little and allowed a tiny smile to flicker across her face at the sight, but did not laugh. "I see it does," she said.

She'd never seen a disappearing tail before, but hadn't she heard of cats with disappearing tails in stories? "Are you a Cheshire Cat?" she asked. "And yes, I think I'd prefer Thrice. I don't let anyone call me Hottie, and most people don't call me by my last name at all. It offends some people, as does my middle name." Listening to Sarin, Thrice began to realize why she was doing the things she was, acting the way she was: she was a child. Sure, she had an adult body, but at heart, Sarin was a child, with no more understanding of right and wrong than a kit. That was the reason why she was being...silly. It would probably be a very bad idea to mention it.

Thrice shrugged. "I ate not long ago. Pancakes with strawberry syrup and bacon, so I'm all full, I'm afraid. If you want to get something, though, I won't stand in your way."
