Vanya gave herself a once over; making sure she looked her best. She had to look perfect because today was the day she'd be capturing her first male. She was nervous; but she made sure she didn't show it. Nervousness wasn't a beautiful emotion; that was certain. She hoped she would be successful; her reputation was relying on it. Vanya had only her looks to rely on; having missed out on the gene that granted amazing strength. If she failed it would mean she was.. she shuddered at the thought; not wanting to finish it.

Waving her sisters goodbye, Vanya left the safety of the nests and began to explore their territory further. As she walked, her eyes darted around looking for any sign of movement. She took slow careful steps; her bells jingling with each movement. She did not silence them; hoping they would intrigue a curious male to move towards her. She was not afraid; she was close enough to home that if she screamed her sisters would come running. She also knew enough about fighting and the sharpness of her claws to defend herself until they arrived.

"Hopefully it won't come down to that."

A shadow passed overhead. Hadyn's gaze tracked the eagle as it soared above him. The stallion eased himself to his feet. To the casual observer it would have appeared that Hadyn did not have a care in the world; but that was not the case. He took life as it came at him. He prided himself on his serene demeanor. Since he'd been lost as a basket the stallion had had to provide for himself. It had not been an easy task at first but eventually Hadyn had been able to grow into a self-sufficient individual.

Breathing in deeply Hadyn relaxed and scanned the horizon beyond him. Which direction would he go in today? At random the stallion began an easy canter. He was in no hurry today. A while later had Hadyn slowing into a plodding walk before pausing. Was that the sound of bells? If so ... what was causing them? It was a mystery to solve; something to investigate.

The sound of hooves alerted Vanya almost instantly. He (or she) was close and she had barely anytime to prepare. Throwing herself to the ground, Vanya's face twisted into that of mock pain; she even managed to force out a few tears. Grabbing a handful of soil, she rubbed it on her leg, suppressing the cry she wanted to make as she though of how pitiful she'd look. How dirty and weak. How.. she wouldn't say that word.

Soldiering on, Vanya lay her head on her front legs, sobbing. With each breath she took, her back heaved and her bells jingled. She prayed to the Angeni mother that this would work. That he would see a damsel in distress and want to help her. She would allow it and take him back to bestow rewards upon him; realistically capturing him.

The bells were still jingling. The sound lured Hadyn off his chosen direction and he scouted the surrounding vista cautiously. He'd traveled down into a valley tracking the sound and had just crested a rise. Something was causing the bell ringing. What was it? Hadyn swung his neck again to the right and spotted something. A white figure lay one the ground about one hundred feet out. The sound of ringing continued. Hadyn's ears twitched gently as the musical notes floated on the breeze. But it seemed that there was something interspersed with the bells' chiming.

The figure was sobbing. Hadyn's pace broke into a canter again as he narrowed his gaze. It definitely seemed that the figure was another Soquili. A scent on the breeze told the stallion that he was dealing with a mare. Hadyn slowed down as the distance became less than ten feet and he stopped. The mare's white coat seemed to glisten in the sunlight that shone down upon them. The rest of her seemed just as pristine. Golden jewelry was draped across her back. Hadyn was entranced. His gaze picked out a dusty smear on one of the mare's legs. It was something that didn't fit with this picture. Perhaps she had injured herself. Clearing his throat Hadyn spoke gently, "Excuse me miss. Are you alright?"

Vanya smirked while her face was still hidden. She forced a few more tears from her eyes, letting them roll down her cheek and streak her face. Looking up, she pouted and sniffed. "Oh, thank goodness," she cried, her tone that of relief. "I fell down and hurt myself. I was beginning to think I'd be left out here." Another sniffle before she wiped her tears on her front leg. "I do apologize for my state. I must look like a mess."

Between sniffles and sobs, Vanya took in the stallion's appearance. He was relatively pretty; his coat a swirl of blues and white. His hair; black and blue streaks; reminded him of a blue swallowtail. She enjoyed butterflies; they seemed to float through the air as if they hadn't a care in the world. As a filly she was often chastised for wandering off chasing butterflies.

"If you wouldn't mind escorting me home I'd be happy to repay your kindness."

Hadyn listened to the mare tell her story as he took in the rest of her appearance. Gold jewelry flashed along her body. The bells that had lured him in dangled from the trinkets. The mare's white body transitioned into a lovely green-blue color on her legs and her muzzle. Her hair seemed to be of the same tint. Peacock feathers adorned her mane and tail. Hadyn had a bit of shock when the realization hit him. This mare did not have hooves. Talons adorned her feet. He had never seen a Soquili with talons before. Hadyn lowered his head to peer closer at the appendages on the mare's feet before noting the smear that covered the mare's front leg.

"You fall rather gracefully miss. You do not look like a mess. The only thing that seems out of place is where you must have hit the ground."

The stallion seemed a little wary about acting as an escort to this lovely creature. Surely she must have another who was concerned about her though. He couldn't just walk away and leave her here though. There were stories he had heard before of vicious Soquili attacking lesser breeds. Hadyn Star was no fool. He preferred to hide rather than engage enemies. A soft sigh escaped him as he regarded the mare before him. He couldn't just walk away. "I really find reason to leave this area but you might need a helping hoof," Hadyn paused, "let me introduce myself. I am Hadyn Star. Who do I have the honor of meeting?"

Vanya followed his eyes to her talons. Shoot. She didn't look like a damsel in distress with feet like those, that was for certain. "A curse placed upon my family," she managed to lie with ease. "I must look like a monster to you." Her voice trembled and the tears returned to her eyes, threatening to spill over. She laughed softly at his comment. "Thank you, Hadyn Star. My name is Vanya."

Shuffling around, she winced a little. "It's going to leave a terrible bruise." Pouting a little, she forced herself to send, whimpering a little. When she stood, she slumped a little, standing awkwardly so as to not put pressure on her 'injured' leg. She shuffled awkwardly, trying to keep her balance. "I really appreciate your help. I will be sure to repay your kindness when we reach my home."

Vanya smiled sweetly at the stallion. In her mind she was laughing. It was amazing how quick to believe this stallion was. She had a feeling her appearance played a large part in it; talons aside. Beauty really was just as powerful as strength when it came to gathering stallions for the Flock. She could not wait to see the look on her sisters' faces.

Curses? Monsters? And at last he could fashion a name to such a beauty.

Hadyn executed a rather simple bow to Vanya. To see such a mare in distress pinched at Hadyn's heart. He could not leave Vanya to fend for herself if she truly was injured as she stated. In all honesty though Hadyn believed the opposite of Vanya's words. He watched idly as Vanya got to her feet. He pawed gently at the earth before clearing his throat. "I have found in my travels Vanya that not all monsters are hideous. Even those that are the most beautiful in looks hide their true monsters deep inside. You are merely a victim it seems."

Hadyn inclined his head to indicate Vanya's talons. Whomever had cursed Vanya's family was the monster. He watched the mare whimper and slump in an effort to favor her uninjured leg. It must have been difficult to do so and as he continued to watch her tilt awkwardly he took it upon himself to act as a barrier to her weaker side. "If you will pardon me Vanya I can act sort of like a crutch if you need it. I'll walk alongside your injured side and prevent you from toppling over."

He had no idea that he was playing right into the mare's trap. Just the thought that he was doing something good for a change instead of lazing around had Hadyn smiling. Why shouldn't he escort Vanya home? What trouble could come of such a harmless gesture?

Her? A victim? She almost laughed at such a thought. How funny it was that he thought of her as the victim when in fact it was the exact opposite. Oh, how silly you are my pet; to think that I am the weak one. Looking up at him under thick lashes, Vanya leaned her body against him, making sure to 'accidentally' nuzzle him. A blush crept up her cheeks and she looked away shyly.

Vanya took her first step towards the nest where guards would come an attend her, making sure Hadyn would not be able to flee. She wondered how he would react; if he would put up a fight or if he would accept his fate. She hoped he would be humble; accepting without any challenging the rules. She would hate to see her wingless butterfly scarred. Beauty was only worth anything to her if it was perfect.

"It must be fate that you found me, Hadyn. Without you I would be lost surely." She pressed herself against him, closing her eyes and smiling softly.

When Vanya leaned against him Hadyn almost forgot how to breath. Almost. He kept his neck straight as he caught a slight coloration to Vanya's cheek. How soon could one fall head over heels? Hadyn shook that thought from his mind and concentrated at the task at hand. He needed to keep an eye out on the surrounding vista and also make sure not to upset Vanya's shaky sense of balance. He had to walk in time with her steps.

At the mare's first step Hadyn also put one foot forward. A melodic chime echoed in the quiet air around them. He listened as Vanya spoke of how fate must have brought them together and he smiled ruefully in reply. He was silent for a moment as he gazed ahead. "I don't know if I believe in fate Vanya. Your bells led me to you. I cannot lie and say I am not grateful to have met your acquaintance though."

Hadyn gave a side-long glance to the mare at his side. "In which direction do we go from here?"

Watching him from the corner of her eye, Vanya smiled as the stallion was drawn into her more than before. Lulled into a sense of false security, he was falling for her tricks more as time passed. Not long now and he would realise the truth. Not long now and he would be trapped in the flock.

Oh, how proud her sisters would be. Capturing a male without violence or revealing her true nature. Relying only on beauty was as dangerous as it was impressive. However, now that Vanya knew it was possible she was a lot less nervous. She had more confidence in herself than before; which was a little scary considering how much confidence she had.

Hadyn's voice broke her from her thoughts and she leaned against him a little more. "I must thank the one who made these bells for me, then." Eyes focusing forward, she could make out the break in the trees that would lead her to guards waiting. Another five or ten minutes of walking. "Just keeping going straight. It's not much further."

Hadyn Star watched Vanya watch him. The mare was certainly an interesting contradiction. She had talons instead of hooves. However her beauty and grace all but made up for it. His eyes caught the tree line ahead and he glanced curiously at the darkened entrance. What interesting secrets could lie within the depths? Where exactly did Vanya live within the confines? As these questions ran through his mind Hadyn made sure that he continued to act as a bulwark to Vanya's "injured" side.

"The bells are indeed a work of art Vanya. I truly believe that you should express my gratitude as well. This is certainly an interesting day for me. I never expected to end up chauffeuring such an stunning individual home. I believe I must thank you in advance for this outing Vanya."

Hadyn paused and gave a rather courtly dip of his head towards the mare. He had raised himself but Hadyn knew enough to remain polite to the lady at his side. He was apparently approaching her domain rather fast.

"I'll be sure to thank the crafter the next time I see him." Ah, Taarab; you really are a genius. He was the one who had crafted the bells for her; at least the ones in her hair that had lured Hadyn to her. She would definitely be sure to give her thanks. He was becoming more and more useful to her; more and more prized. His crafting skills were beyond anyone else's. He created beauty like no one else.

"Your words are too kind, Hadyn. Thank you." From the corner of her eye, Vanya saw them. Her sisters, silently getting into position. To any other soquili, the sound would just be a bird or some other creature fleeing from their approaching footsteps. They were closing in, preparing to capture the stallion. There wasn't much space between them now. Another five minutes of walking and he would be hers.

Her eyes shone as he bowed. How very noble of him. His manners would come in handy in ensuring his safety in the flock. Assuming he followed the rules and took to his role nicely.

Hadyn watched the mare at his side. He heard the rustling in the foliage around him. He flicked his gaze towards the trees around them in interest. They'd entered the forest proper now and a gentle wind stirred his mane and caused him to shiver. Was something watching him? Or was he just nervous in Vanya's presence? Hadyn listened intently to Vanya's words and felt a little warmth bloom in his cheeks. "I do not feel my words are adequate though to capture the image of beauty I see though walking at my side."

Hadyn swung his gaze around the trees around him. "This is truly an amazing location. It feels rather peaceful here," Hadyn gave the mare beside him a long, lingering look, "is this where you call home?"

Smitten as he was with the mare at his side the stallion failed to realize the fact that a lot of the smaller creatures had fallen silent. Usually that was an indicator of a troubling presence in the nearby area. He thought he caught sight of something flitting through the thick foliage. What was it?

Breaking away from Hadyn's side, Vanya stepped forward, her stride normal and perfect. She whistled loudly; the sound echoing from the trees. Around them, the forest erupted into a cacophony of sounds as ten harpies surrounded Hadyn. They kept still for the time being, waiting for Vanya's second signal for them to bring the male to the others.

Turning, Vanya smiled at Hadyn, sweet as she had before. "I'm glad you like it so much, pet. You'll be staying here for a very long time." She shook her mane, attempting to detangle her curls. Already distracted by something else, she ignored everyone else for a moment while she preened herself. One of her sisters cleared their throat and she looked up, annoyed that she'd been interrupted. "Make sure you listen to what they say. You belong to me now, so long as you don't get yourself hurt and damage your beauty I'll make sure you're looked after. Disobey the rules and there is nothing I can do to help. You will be used to strengthen the flock; add numbers. I may ask you to help warm my nest. If you prove yourself to be obedient, I will introduce you to the artisan guild to see if you have any talent."

Vanya nodded to a sister and they moved in, surrounding Hadyn, giving him no escape. Turning, she walked off, stopping occasionally to remove sticks and leaves from her hair. At least it was worth it. She had successfully captured her first male. Let her sisters call her weak now. Not everything required strength. Some things involved skill. Eying the sky, Vanya watched as the sun slowly began to set. She would skip dinner tonight. It was going to take a while for her to fix her hair and clean herself up.
