So, here's some bullshit for you all who care about what goes on in other people's lives!
I am a full-time college student working a part-time job. I get sixteen hours a week and I have a lot of bills piling up. I applied for food stamps so that I could take a little bit of the pressure off. I just got off the phone with the people from the agency that deals with that. She told me that because I'm a full-time student and a part-time worker with less than twenty hours a week, I will be ineligible to receive food share.
Goddamn budget cuts! Who are they to screw a working person trying to better himself out of food?! I'm left with two choices, but I'm going to make the obvious one. I can either continue going to school without food stamps, or I can quit school and continue receiving them. Well, my goal is to become a teacher, so I can't quit school.

Okay, I know what I am going to say can get people angry (I.E. their pride hurt) and it can get me in trouble. How about I help you by sending you money? I cut my neighbor's yard on Sundays (once ever two-three weeks) I don't get paid much, but I would rather you eat rather than starve. Then again, we probably live in different countries so my money would be useless.
I don't know, but I hope things work out. I have no advice to give, I am really sorry I can't help you. Hey! Maybe you could do a little extra work on the side lines? Like when you're done with your homework, chores, and whatever, you do other peoples yard... just your kind neighbors. I don't know. Might not work and you'd probably be too tired to do anything else.

I appreciate the offer, but like most Americans, I abhor handouts. I'm quick to give them out and get offended if they're not taken, but I can't accept them myself, not without a little round of "No, I can't take that..." "Will you just take it already?!" I will deal with it because it is the lot of every American EVER that's not in the 1% of wealth.
And if I had any nice neighbours I just might do that, except for the fact that I have no lawnmower, so all I can do is shovel snow (or rain lol).

Partly as I thought.
I guess you're right, and I am not about to take apart a lawnmower and send them somewhere. Still, I hope things work out for you. Oh hey! Maybe you could do stuff for me and then I pay you! It's not a handout, and the stuff I can have you do is the only problem. Yeah, it is, because you would need supplies and stuff, so I guess not. Still, I wish I could help.

It doesn't even make any sense that you don't qualify. Most people who are in college depend on some sort of aid that they prolly have to work to pay back. The fact that you don't work enough hours to be considered a "full-time employee", and chances are you get paid by the hour, they HAVE to take that into consideration that you need some help paying for necessities such as food n' toiletries. What REALLY gets me is when people who have Food Stamps use their card for candy, seafood, that stuff n' use the Money part of the card (not sure if your state does that, but it's like debit n' you can take money out of your Food Stamps card) to buy booze. Also, quite a few of these people "claim" the need assistance but are ALWAYS seen with top-of-the-line s**t and who knows how many credit cards for ritzy department stores. I work at a grocery store, so I see this all the time. It pisses me off. I think Food Stamps is fine, but it really should be monitored much better n' the qualifications definitely need to be adjusted. AND REASONABLE.
Did you talk to the director of that office?

My advice?
Go to school in Canada. Get a visa and go. Minimum wage is set at $9.40 per hour, and univeristy is usually around $5,000 per semester. If you're starving in the states, that's my adivce.
Or if you're living on your own, move in with relatives to take some of the strain off paying rent or what-not.

That's good advice. I wish I thought of it. I would have been useful if I did.

I am 100% in support of social programs and wish a great deal that you could get food stamps, but you know... You can't say that it isn't a handout, too. So you will take handouts... Which is fine. Sometimes the working man just needs a little extra help. There's nothing wrong with taking what you need, so long as it's done fairly and legitimately.

What I meant by handouts is handouts from other people. I'm all for taking money from a government organisation.
But thank you for your sympathy and input.

We are in the exact same situation! I just applied for food stamps earlier this month, and was also denied. (I'm also in college and work part time)
The best thing I could do in my situation was trade in some old textbooks on Amazon.com. I got like 5 boxes of pasta, 10 cans of tuna, and a bunch of other food for trading in my book.
It really is ridiculous how people are denied help from the government. Yesterday I had only 1 meal and a few small snacks. Luckily, I was able to borrow some money from my dad to buy a few groceries.

Yeah, I had to trade in all my change that I'd been saving up for the last ten months... Looks like it's back to Ramen and tuna for me...

This is not right. Hey, what if we rally a bunch of people and we go on strike and not rest until you two get you aid that you need? They can't arrest us because we're doing it peacefully and not doing anything hostile. Hmm, then you two might get fired from you jobs or get dropped.
Well, you should probably find out why you did not qualify for food stamps.
