(this is a self rp that takes place right before Kawoni decides to leave her mate)

Kawoni awoke with a start. her heart was beating so fast it felt like it wanted to run away. she took a few deep breaths to calm herself as she took stock of her surroundings. thats right, she was safe, her mate St. Augustine lay by her side still sleeping for it was very late in the night. on her other side were two foals sprawled out in their sleep, occasionally kicking or twitching as their dreams played behind closed eyes. she smiled at them, for they were her greatest joy. she loved them both so much. joy and pride swelled in her chest as she looked over their perfect forms. the feeling was quickly replaced by fear as her mate gave off a soft growl in his sleep. it startled her and she gave a little gasp. he must be having a bad dream...or maybe a good one.

Kawoni carefully got to her feet trying her hardest not to wake anyone. she moved to the edge of the clearing and into the woods. it was dark there and quiet. she stopped and lay by a tree whos roots made a nice little seat for her back to rest on. this was a familiar spot for her. she had visited it many nights since the birth of her children. it was the perfect stop for she could still see her family, but was far enough away that she felt alone.

Kawoni watched her sleeping children wondering what had woken her so suddenly. her eyes moved over to Augustine who once again growled, a sneer grew on his face and his teeth glimmered in the moonlight. the sight would frighten any sane horse, but to her it was endearing. she loved everything about the stallion that slept next to her children. he was strong and handsome. he was kind and gentle. his pure kalona traits were perfectly beautiful to her. infact she envied him. he could fly, and he could protect in a way that she could not. she could only run were he could fight. so why was there this growing fear that woke her up in the night?

She thought of her own father and how she had been raised. it had been in a loving family with two brothers to play with, a mother to teach and a father to protect. she had all of this in her own family. her children played together happily, she taught them everything she knew (even if it wasent that much for she was still young) and Augustine had kept all threats far away. but something still felt off. she thought of each member individually.

her son was handsome and strong he was Cerynei but had his fathers Kalona teeth. they had taught him that it was ok to eat meat but they did not let him do it often, and he was not allowed to kill.

her daughter was very quiet, never really spoke to anyone, but when she did speak the girl had very insightful and deep thoughts. that foal did not miss a thing. the little girl could very easily be mistaken for a pure Cerynei from affar, but of you looked closely you could see that she had the shap slitted eyes of a Kalona. those eyes scared kawoni, for she knew he daughter saw a lot more than kawoni could.

then there was augustine. pure kalona in all but his attitude. he was kind and loving. they had met not long ago, love at first sight. he was the first male that had ever caught her fancy, and oddly enough the first kalona tht she had ran across. he had been a perfect lover, a good friend, and a strong father. that last thought stuck in her mind.

a strong father indeed he was, infact he did not know his own strength. there had been several occasions were she had to interfere with him playing his the kids. little things like they would all be wrestling and he would be gentle and careful to let the children win, but out of nowhere he would snap at one of the foals who got too close, or who snuck up from behind. one time he even managed to bite the little filly on the side. it was just a small n**, but Augustines teeth still drew blood.

she shivered at the memory. the filly did not cry, infact she had spent more effort in comforting her father than on her own wound. it was the look in Augustines eyes that scared her. for a brief flickering moment Augustine had tasted blood and had liked it. if anything were to ever happen, if for some reason his Kalona instincts kicked in, her children would be easy targets.

what would so do then? the thought latched onto her heart and pulled it out, fear quickly replacing the empty spot. a vison of her presious children laying dead at her feet, her mate's beautiful white coat stained in their blood flashed across her mind. with a startled gasp she realized that that had been what had woken her. that was her dream, or nightmare. she had drempt that Augustine had killed her kids and was next coming for her.

could that ever really happen? would it happen? is it possible for someone to lose all sanity and rampage on everyone around? Kawoni began to shake, tears sprung to her eyes. was she being selfish? was she being a bad mother? the enemy was not the dark creatures that Augustine could keep out with his teeth, but the enemy was St. Augustine himself. he was like a snake that slithered into the den of rabbits, hissing soft comforting words as it ate each bunny one by one. she love him, but was he the best thing for her children?

she knew that if anything happened that she would be able to hold her own. she knew how to fight, and could defend herself, if not by strength, then by speed. but her children? they would be helpless against him.

Kawoni shook her head and laughed, a small chuckle to disperse her fears. so what if Augustine like to play rough? she was just being silly, he would never really harm her or her children. after all they were as much his as they were hers. they may not look like kalona but her children had strong fighting spirits and Kawoni took peace in knowing that they would never be defenseless. her son had strength and speed, not to mention his sharp teeth in wich he could bite. her daughter had stealth and interrelate coupled along with the eyes to for-see danger long before it arrived. they were not defenseless.

Kawoni got to her feet and took a deep breath or two to clear her head. she quietly walked over to a small stream. it was a small ways from her family, but she was thirsty, and she had sensed no threat in the air tonight. she bent over and took a few sips of the cold water. it was refreshing and helped calm her nerves. she took her time returning to her family. it was a peaceful night, Kawoni wondered how many others were up at the late hour pondering over deep questions of their heart. it made her think. she needed someone who she could talk to, someone who she could trust to keep her secrets. she needed a friend who would just sit and listen, but how does one go about getting someone like that? she herself could never just sit and listen to someone complain about how terrible their life is, so how could she expect anyone to do the same for her?

she shrugged and headed home. these were odd thoughts for an odd night, and she should not linger on them. it was just a nightmare, odd things happen in dreams. she once had a dream that she could fly and Augustine was flying beside her. of course that would never happen, things in dreams hardly do. so there was no reason to make a big fuss over some silly little dream about Augustine being harmful. she chuckled at how silly she had been. leaving her mate was a thought that she should never have entertained. so she banished it from her mind as she crept back into the clearing and nestled down inbetween the love of her life and her children.

she kissed each foal in tern and then leaned over and kissed Augustine lightly on his cheek as she lay down and closed her eyes. it was here that she belonged, and here that she would stay. Kawoni could say that over and over again, but some part of her knew that it was not true. her eyes closed and her breathing slowed as her mind thrust her back into the troubled dreams as if they had been waiting for her to return.
