While the holidays had passed by, er, rather memorably, Eva had to admit that she had been hit with a pang of homesickness now that the Joy formula had worn off. Sure, it was already past Christmas, but that wasn't the point. Up until this year, she had spent the past 19 Christmases with her parents, and now...

Well, she couldn't say that she was completely upset. After all, it wasn't as if she had been alone--she had spent the holidays with her new friends, and she would be lying if she said that she hadn't enjoyed herself this year. However, there was one regret that she had: she hadn't been able to make a gingerbread house.

Ever since she was a kid, Eva would make a gingerbread house every Christmas Eve and, instead of leaving the traditional milk and cookies out for Santa, she would leave the whole house. By the time she was old enough to realize that Santa was really just her dad sneaking aroundwhile she was sleeping, she had also come to the realization that she had unknowingly been forcing her father to sit down and eat a whole gingerbread house every year.

Unfortunately, she hadn't thought to buy a gingerbread house kit when they were allowed out to buy gifts, and though it was late...well, she kind of wanted to indulge herself on this tradition at least one more time, even if it was a little silly. The question was, what was she supposed to build it out of if she didn't have gingerbread? There was nothing at Deus Ex that she could possible use--ah.

And that was why Eva was currently occupying a whole lunch table, gluing together the edges of toast with the goop served in the cafeteria.

Wilson was on a mission against his will. One moment he had been idly shooting hoops with the miniature basketball set Tedan had presented him for Christmas, and then the next he found Dakota knocking on his door and forcing him to Dr. H’s office with no reason listed. Eventually he did learn that Dakota had chosen to intentionally seek out the Life division leader for—ugh—flirting advice, the young man still didn’t know why exactly the Moon trainee had chosen to drag him along. He didn’t like it. Wilson didn’t want a mission, much less a mission devoted to flirting and making free conversation with a woman. He knew how to do that just fine while Dakota didn’t. Stupid Dakota for dragging him into this.

He sighed and scratched his head. Too bad the order had already been given, otherwise Wilson would have gladly hightailed it back to his dorm. He took a few steps outside before twisting around to stroll backwards. The trainee looked back and forth, but found no female hunter within sight. Wilson hummed softly, sounding a bit disappointed, but continued on his search nonetheless. For a few minutes he walked toward no particular destination, but eventually found himself heading toward the cafeteria. He didn’t shake off the idea. Perhaps someone had decided to stop by for a snack.

What he didn’t expect to see was Eva gluing toast together with…he didn’t know what it was, actually. How unsettling. Ah, but that was the moment Wilson remembered his mission. He went over to the table his fellow death trainee sat at, sliding next to her. “What’re you doing?” Wilson figured it would be more polite to gradually broach the topic of love rather than catapult the question upon Eva.

Eva had been concentrating so deeply that she hardly seemed to notice Wilson until her fellow trainee slid into the seat beside her. Up until that point, she had been staring intensely at her creation, head tilted and tongue sticking out of the corner of her mouth. Considering the violent jump that she gave when the man suddenly spoke up and made his presence known, it was a wonder that she hadn't bit herself. As it was, what little that she had of her toast-house came tumbling down.

...Boo. Oh well, she could rebuild that in a couple of minutes!

"Nothing much!" Came Eva's cheerful reply as she turned to flash Wilson a smile, "Or, well. I didn't get to make a gingerbread house during Christmas, so I'm making up for it now." Without warning, she suddenly stood up, pushing herself onto the table and flopping down onto her stomach. As she worked on repairing the fallen walls, her gaze slid back over to Wilson.

"Wanna help?" Grinning, she propped her head up on her hands, "Or are you here for another reason?" Getting some food to eat, maybe? Or just meeting someone here?

Her startled jump surprised Wilson. Eyes grew large and he leaned back, even scooting to the side a couple places to allow the woman more room. Had he caught Eva by surprise that much? He didn’t think he had been that discreet, but then again she had seemed intensely focused on her project. Speaking of… He turned toward the toast house, except it wasn’t exactly a house anymore. The unique construction had crumbled into a pile of questionable goop and toasted bread. Lips pursed into a thin line as he eyed the pitiful pile with disappointment. It had been an interesting structure; one he would have gladly looked forward to.

He nodded his head, mouth open in a silent ‘ooooh!’ Suddenly everything made sense. “Yeah, Christmas. That sure was…” Wilson attempted to grope for the right word. “…an interesting Christmas, I guess.” While the death trainee gave Eva a skeptical look, he shook his head and decided to move on. “Sure! I’d love to.” He stood up to reach over toward the fallen pieces of bread, lips twitching into a sheepish smile. “Actually, I’m kind of on a mission.” Kind of. Wilson couldn’t really consider this a true mission.

Oh, awesome, he had actually agreed! Eva positively beamed at Wilson, clearly happy to have another pair of hands helping her with her creation. It was going to be awesome when it was done! "Great, thanks! Start wherever you want!" Eva didn't actually have a specific idea in mind about what she wanted--it was more fun to just go with the flow and make things at random, she figured. Though...she didn't want anything too complicated. After all, she hoped for them to finish (and demolish) the toast house by the time Caelius decided to come around to the cafeteria. The last thing either of the death trainees needed was their division leader blowing a gasket over their creation.

She had turned back to glue together two pieces of toast with her makeshift icing when Wilson's words sunk in. There was a pause, and then, without moving her head, her gaze slid back in his direction. "Oh? A mission? Now?" Should she really be bothering him with helping her if he was busy now, then? Though perhaps she should first ask...

"What kind of mission?" What type of mission would lead him here, to the cafeteria? ...A food run?

“Okay!” He grabbed a couple pieces of toast. Wilson laid one flat on the table while he placed the other slice next to it. Before he grabbed some glue he eyed at what Eva had managed to reconstruct so far. It seemed to be a simple structure, to his disappointment. While he had been far from becoming an architecture major the idea of a miniature house out of bread intrigued him. Maybe afterwards he could construct a lofty toast house, but for now he neatly glued the edges of two pieces together. Wilson carefully set the slices upright and slid it over toward the pieces Eva had already set up. He wasn’t too worried about Caelius dropping in and ruining their fun. Caelius seemed more like to hole himself up in his office or something like that.

“Mmm. Sort of a mission. It’s not much of a mission.” He glued another piece of toast to the partially-constructed house. “Dr. H wants me to talk to people about their first love.” Wilson gave her a sheepish smile. “So if you had a first love…”

Taking a piece of toast, Eva used a plastic knife to cut out squares for the windows, doing the same process for...uh, probably two dozen pieces of toast. Though what they had glued together so far seemed to be a simple enough structure, it was clear that Eva had greater things in mind. In fact, she seemed to be--...was she trying to construct a tower? It looked like she was rolling up some pieces of toast.

As she worked, she listened to Wilson intently, nodding to show that she was following the conversation. And then...first love? The young woman's hands suddenly slipped, and the top part of the tower came apart. However, she either didn't notice, or she simply didn't care as she turned to look at her companion.

"Er, first love?" And suddenly Eva was looking very, very embarrassed. She let out a nervous laugh before promptly turning her attention back to the toast house. "Interesting mission! Very interesting! Wilson, do you think we could make a toast castle?" She was trying to dodge the question.

Wilson picked up one of the squares Eva had cut out. He idly tore the bread piece into smaller bits as he eyed the pile of squares. While the man held no qualms about making a house out of bread, he couldn’t help but wonder what the two would do with the toast slices once they were done constructing it. Would they eat it? That sounded painful, but dumping everything into the trash seemed wasteful. A flashback of his mother echoed in his mind and he almost cringed. As nice and loving April Hopkins could be, she could also be damn strict.

“Ah.” He reached over to pick up the fallen slices of the tower. Wary eyes stared at Eva before Wilson concentrated on repairing the upper part of the structure. It seemed he had poked at a weak spot for the fellow death trainee. He quirked an eyebrow at her. Her attempt at avoiding the topic didn’t escape him. Wilson grinned at her. “I like your thinking.” While he gathered up more toast to build the castle with, he casually returned to the topic of his mission. “Yes. So I was wondering if you ever had a first love?” She probably did, but the question couldn’t hurt.

Had Wilson voiced his questions and concerns aloud, he would have found that Eva...well, she wasn't entirely certain either. Eva was the type who focused more on the present than the future...which basically just meant that she was the type to act before she thought. They could deal with the dilemma when it actually came--until then, there was still a lot more building to be done!

She seemed to relax slightly at the man's compliment, but when his question about love followed, the young woman visibly stiffened again. "I, er...me?" Her gaze darted towards Wilson and then away as she emitted a rather nervous sounding laugh. "No. I mean, not really--I've never dated, you know? Everyone thought that I was a little crazy back home, so..."

She trailed off with a small shrug, though that perpetual smile of hers was still on her face, even if it was much smaller and much more nervous looking..

Wilson shot her an apologetic smile. Sorry. Normally he would have ended the topic there, but this was a mission. It was an absolutely ridiculous mission, but it was still a mission. If he could somehow finish it in one go, he would like to do so. He held back a laugh, his smile growing larger. “Yeah, you. Is there anyone else?” Wilson hummed quietly, constructively gluing together two pieces of toast to form another corner for the house. He didn’t say anything else. Instead he let a moment of silence develop between them, save for the sound of paste glopping together as he slathered on even more of the odd mixture onto the bread.

“So you didn’t even have a crush when you were little?” He glanced at Eva again to throw her yet another sorry smile. “I mean, you probably had some boy you kind of liked in elementary or something, right? Or…?”

Goodness...just what kind of mission was this? Eva tried to focus her attention back on the toast house, but it was hard to when Wilson started asking her more questions. However, judging by the look on his face and the tone of his voice, this was really just all business to him. Sighing, the girl propped her head up in her hands as she thought seriously about this. Might as well make this mission easy for him!

"Well...yeah, I guess. I think everyone gets a crush at some point in their life. Though I wasn't a kid--at least, not in elementary school. I think I was in middle school by that point." Deciding that she could talk and work at the same time, she start building again. As she worked on a...a drawbridge, she hummed in thought.

"I was...fourteen, I think? There was this really sweet kid who transferred into my class. Well, you know, since he was new, he hadn't heard all the crazy rumors about me yet. We hit it off pretty well." She suddenly looked a little sheepish, her smile growing in a faint grin, "Er, didn't really work out in the end, though."

Wilson looked mighty impressed with Eva’s drawbridge and took it as his cue to begin a wall and moat around the building. Somewhere in his mind, he had immediately connected drawbridge with medieval castle. Rather than stupidly slather the glue around the house, Wilson opted to place a ring of slices around it and then cover the bread with the mysterious gunk. “Middle school.” Glimpses of his own time in middle school resurfaced in his mind. Some memories were pleasant, others not so much.

“New kid, hm? That’s always nice, since you tend to see the same faces over and over year after year.” He laughed quietly, glancing at Eva before staring at the food house again. He wasn’t even sure if it should be called a house anymore. “First crushes and loves don’t work out often.” His smile softened. “I really liked this girl in first grade. She had long, blond hair in curly pigtails. She had a really pretty smile.” Then his grin turned a bit sheepish. “I never once talked to her, though. I was too shy then.”

Clearly this was going to be one ridiculously stupid amazing toast...castle...thing! When she was satisfied with the drawbridge, Eva went back to her towers, cutting out little notches on the top of the rolled toast pieces to create...that shape that most classical medieval castle towers had.

Whatever they were called.

She joined in with his quiet laugh with a light chuckle of her own. That was for sure--it had come as quite a nice change to have a new person around. "New" didn't last long though, alas. She pushed this out of her head as the other death trainee began to relay his own story--a story that had Eva smiling widely. "Aww, Wilson!" The grin was suddenly back on her face as she reached out--while first making sure that she didn't have any glue gunk stuck to her hand--and ruffled his hair. "So you were one of those adorable shy kids!"

Eva drew her hand back, but only because her tower was threatening to topple over. Propping it back up, she glued it to one of the corners of the castle's main walls. "So wait, why did you get this mission from Dr. H anyways?"

And oddly wonderfully enough Wilson actually remembered what those shapes were called: battlements. Why he could still remember this junk from history class he didn’t know, but he admitted history was pretty interesting in an odd, demented sort of way.

“Hm?” He leaned back a bit soon as he saw Eva leaning over with an outstretched hand, but once he realized it was clean he relaxed and laughed as she ruffled his hair. “Yeah. When you jump at pretty much anything you tend to not be so outgoing, but at least I got over it.” he admitted. Wilson suspiciously eyed the tower as it wobbled. The trainee reached out to press the already-joined pieces together, strengthening the glue’s hold on the toast. “Adorable? If you consider a shy, nerdy kid with glasses adorable, then okay.”

Awkward laughter. “Um. About that. Yeah. Dakota took me to H’s office for flirting lessons.” Wilson shot a wide-eyed look at Eva. “For him, not for me. I still don’t know why he took me with him.”

Awwww, Wilson.

With most of their little structures done, all that was left was to finish off the walls. As Eva glued the pieces together one by one, she let her gaze occasionally flicker upwards towards Wilson, a grin spreading across her lips. "Makes sense, I guess! I tried to be outgoing and cheerful, but...well. It's a lot easier for me to be me here at Deus Ex, since no one is really judging me." Or at least, no one is calling her crazy for seeing things. "And yes, Wilson, I think you sound like you were an adorable kid. Got any pictures?"

The question was asked with a teasing tone, but her expression...well, she might have looked a little hopeful.

Fortunately, she was successfully distracted by the talk about H's mission. At first, Eva giggled, but then she let out a bright laugh at the man's clarification. "Hmmm? Are you sure that you weren't at all interested in H's teachings?"
