She'd heard it. She couldn't be sure that it was what she thought it was, and she barely dared to hope, but she had to investigate.
On her latest scouting mission she had made it all the way to the Carona Coast. A violent storm had whipped up and forced her to seek shelter in a cave while it passed, and it was at that moment that she heard it. The first time she thought it was simply the whistling of the wind, but as it repeated itself she became increasingly sure that it wasn't. A low, almost mournful cry that echoed eerily over the sea and across the cliffs, piercing the storm with unnatural clarity.
She knew that no ordinary pokemon could make such a noise, She had two theories, each equally unlikely, and dangerous to pursue. The legendary pokemon Kyogre and Lugia were both possibilities. When the storm cleared, rather than heading home, she stared down the cliff at the abyss below and released Trouble from his pokeball.
"Think you can get me down there, Trouble?"
"Krow?" Trouble gave her an odd look and then looked down at the waters below. He certainly didn't want anything to do with that, but if Chloe really wanted to go there, he probably wouldn't be able to stop her. "Got it, boss!" He hovered slightly above her and extended his legs for her to hold on to.
"Ok. Don't drop me until I've let Shimmer out, got it?" She grabbed onto his legs and gave him a nod, steeling her nerves for the ride down.
The descent wasn't that bad at first, but as they neared the rough waters she got increasingly nervous. She could feel her arms beginning to ache and she suspected that Trouble was struggling as well. With her last burst of strength, Chloe grabbed Shimmer's pokeball off of her belt and tossed it into the water, "Shimmer, get ready!" She cried before letting go of Trouble's leg and crashing ino the freezing cold water.
A moment later she felt herself being lifted up to the surface and she gasped for air as she scrambled onto the back of her Lapras, shivering like mad. At this particular moment she hoped desperately that it wasn't a Kyogre she was dealing with, or there would e a lot more water involved. "Thanks Shimmer. Trouble, return!" She raised a shaky arm with his pokeball pointed at him and he vanished in a burst of red light.
"D-do you see anyth-thing, Shimmer?" Chloe stammered, her teeth starting to chatter now as the cold wind worsened her condition, "A c-cave, or something?" She held on to Shimmer's neck, not even bothering to look herself. If there was something down here, Shimmer would find it. If not, well, she'd rather not think about it.
It wasn't long before she felt the wind stop and Chloe looked up, they were in a small cave, and she let out a groan when she saw that they barely fit inside of it.
"You had to pick the little one, didn't you?" She was putting a lot of effort into keeping her voice steady.
"La." Shimmer pointed toward the back of the small cave with her nose, as if to indicate that she wanted to go there. Unlike Chloe, Shimmer had an intuitive connection with the sea and recognized the cry from before. It was a Lugia, and if she was right, it was through the underwater tunnel connected to this little alcove.
"Oh don't tell me..." Chloe growled, "Just get it over with, ok?" She wrapped her arms around Shimmer's neck and took a deep breath as they both plunged under the surface
The icy waters quickly sapped her strength as they went, but she held on for dear life until they breached the surface again.
Even if she weren't already gasping for air, the sight of this would have taken her breath away.
This inner chamber was massive, a huge pool of water was in the center, easily fourty feet in diameter. Around that was a smooth ring or rock the width of a city street and finally the comparatively small bit of water that they were in. Chloe clamored off of Shimmer's back and onto the solid rock, shivering violently.
This was the place. There was no way that this chamber was here by accident, and if she was ever going to find a legend, she knew it had to be somewhere like this.
"LAA!" Shimmer launched herself out of the water and slid across the smooth rock into the larger pool, diving under the water without warning.
"Shimmer!" Chloe growled, watching the glowing pinpricks of light on her shell beneath the surface of the water. What was she doing?
A massive wave of water rippled out from the center of the pool and Chloe staggered backwards, in awe of what was before her. It was a Lugia, but it was unlike any of the pictures she had seen. The wild stripes covering it's body one thing, but this was not the blue-ish purple color she had expected to see on the pokemon if she ever saw one. This one was pink!
"Shimmer, use Ice Beam!" Chloe cried, not wanting to waste this once in a lifetime opportunity. She had to catch it, and she wasn't about to play fair if that meant this pokemon might get away. "Freeze the exits down there, don't let it escape!" As she spoke she hurled two Ultraballs at the ground, sending Bandit and Trouble bursting out of their capsules.
"Bandit, use Thunderbolt, Trouble, Shadow Ball!"
Bandit stumbled a bit on the slippery rock and his jaw hung open for a moment, stunned by the massive pokemon before him. He sent sparks flying at the beast with all his strength, he trusted Chloe, and didn't doubt that she knew what she was doing.
"Krow!" Now THIS was more like it! Trouble soared into the air and began firing dark energy at the huge pokemon. Having a big bird like this on his side was exactly the sort of thing he approved of, and he would put everything he had into helping Chloe capture it.
The Lugia let out an echoing cry, clear and powerful. She flapped her wings and sent violent winds at her opponents, knocking Bandit into the wall and blowing Trouble off course. She shot beams of psychic energy at the bird but they seemed to have no effect. Confused by this, she was struck by even more devastating attacks and began to thrash about.
The battle continued for several more minutes, but against both Trouble and Bandit, and with no way to escape, the Lugia stood no chance. When her energy was clearly fading, Chloe knew it was time.
"Trouble, stop attacking, Bandit, use Thunder Wave!" She got a wide grin on her face as the weak electric pulses paralyzed the legend and it plunged into the water, floating helplessly on the surface.
"Come on, time to join the team!" Chloe hurled a Luxury Ball at the Lugia and it drew her in, sinking into the water. Unable to see if the capture was successful or not, Chloe waited in anticipation until Shimmer emerged from the water, holding the ball gently in her mouth.
"We did it..." Chloe was shaking not only from the cold now, but from the excitement. "We really did it..." She took the ball from Shimmer and released the Lugia onto the rocky path they stood on.
"You really are a magnificent creature..." She murmured, ruffling through her pack and pulling out her veterinary tools. They were soaked, but the medicine seemed unharmed. She tossed some of the soggy berries aside for her other pokemon to eat while she tended to her newest team member.
Her head throbbed and upon being released from the capsule she found that the human was caring for her, her strength was returning rapidly as Chloe sprayed various substances onto her body. What was going on? She let a low, confused noise and sat up when she felt able, looking into Chloe's eyes and tilting her head to one side.
"Easy there..." Chloe was holding the ball in her hand, ready to recall the newly captured Lugia if she attacked. "Are you alright? I'm Chloe." She offered with a small smile, "Welcome to the team... Terrata." She nodded, it was a good name. Fitting. "Can you get us out of here?"
She blinked a few times and looked around at the other pokemon, the ones that had beaten her in the battle. They were all looking at her expectantly, and they all seemed... Happy. This human couldn't be so bad... If these three trusted her, there had to be a reason. Chloe had probably captured them the same way she had caught her, and they were clearly loyal.
Her choice was clear, she would do as they did, and give this human her trust.
Terrata nodded at Chloe and lowered her chest to the floor so that Chloe could climb on.
"You really are an amazing pokemon..." She smiled and gently stroked the fine feathers on her neck before recalling the other three pokemon to their capsules and prepared for the ride of her life.
"Ok, Terrata, get us out of here." She said as she climbed on and braced herself for the cold plunge into the water.
It never came.
Chloe blinked a few times in surprise as they went through the water with surprising speed, but the water never touched them, it simply raced by with a light sparkle a few inches away from her. Chloe let out a laugh as she realized that Terrata must be using her psychic powers to keep them dry.
This truly was more than she could have ever asked for.
