- In times of hardships, when the young ones begin to seem much older than they should be, the Harpers will tell stories to bestow upon them hope. No story is told more within High Reaches and Telgar Weyr and even within High Telgar Hold than the myth of Gold Chaseth.
The tale tells of the dragon and her rider existing many turns ago, during the 9th Pass. As the story goes, while fighting Thread, the flamethrower of Chaseth's nameless rider was lost. Instead of giving up, Chaseth willed herself to pull through. She reared her head back and, even though she was a gold, and even though she had no firestone, summoned from within her a tremendous amount of fire that destroyed every piece of thread in the sky.
In the legend, another rider manages to capture a spark of the awe inspiring fire, which is placed in a bowl, and soon grows once again to burn for all eternity. Chaseth is recognized as a symbol of hope, and bowls of fire meant to represent her flame can be found throughout the Weyrs and the Hold, affectionately known as "Chaseth's Flame". To swear on Chaseth's Flame is the equivalent of swearing on ones own life.
This story is nothing more than a fairytale, but it has brought comfort to many.
