An ash I know there stands; Yggdrasil is its name, a tall tree, showered with shining loam.

Numbness, nothing seemed to matter, the world contained a tint of grey which would not alleviate with any sense of beauty that penetrated the world. She was alone, her entire herd was slaughtered by a dark maleficent beginning who out of cruel amusement allowed her to live; only a month had passed and yet her feeling of destitution had not removed itself from her system, she was the last of the elite race of the Vigdís, who were trained since birth as great warriors. Her mind raced back to that bloody night, the first snow fall had only occurred hours before, coating the world in its chilling blanket; the herd was in celebration, for the mare had finally come to age and would now find a place among the ranks of the great warriors of the Vigdís. It was so sudden, so unexpected, that three sentries had been slain before the warning screech echoed through the celebrating village; in a matter of seconds the celebration turned into a full out battle, with the Vigdís on the losing side. An hour, at the most, was all it took for the creature to slay the most powerful warriors; it was then it turned its bloody gaze upon the mare with pink wings, a twisted look warping its countenance. Rin Asougi shuddered as she remembered the gaze the being gave her, it was as if she was a piece of meat that only served to entertain the black maleficent creature.

Removing herself from the past, she looked about the world with blurry hallow emerald eyes, her glasses had been broken during the battle, and now the world from her view was hazy and unclear; she felt that it fit perfectly with her current view on life. As the sun moved across the sky, her numb acquiescence of her fate slowly transformed into red hot boiling anger; she did not care if it was a suicide mission to fight the creature that destroyed the greatest warriors known on the planet, she wished for revenge.

Thoughts locked on the retribution of the Vigdís, the slow moving and blind Angeni did not notice the leisurely movement of a figure representing a tree making its way toward her.

User ImageSlowly, Yggdrasil moved along the path, gravel and dirt crunching under the heavy fall of his feet. He'd finally found it - the area he was to build his herd; the headquarters for his work. Now all he needed was members; those who would follow him in protecting life in all its forms from those who wished to destroy it. Restoring that which was lost; preserving what already existed. Yes; with him now in existence the world would flourish, it would be a better place for everyone.

All of this, of course, depended on Yggdrasil finding others to aid him. While he was strong and gifted; he was only one stallion and would not be able to complete the task on his own. Even back then after The Winter he had help from his siblings in restoring the world.

Bringing himself back to the present, he spied a mare ahead of him. Perhaps it was fate, them meeting like this. Perhaps she was to be the first member of his herd. As he got closer to her, he took in her appearance. A glorious pair of wings rested on her back. He eyed her legs, a strange metal wrapped around them. It glinted in the sunlight and he noted the spikes.

Perhaps this mare was going to be his first enemy rather than a foe. Stopping short of her, he watched her carefully, body tense. "Good day."

Thence come the maidens mighty in wisdom, three from the dwelling down 'neath the tree; Urth is one named, Verthandi the next,-- On the wood they scored,-- and Skuld the third.

Rin Asougi shifted in her place, as she noticed the blurry figure make its way closer to where she stood; she squinted her emerald eyes at the looming creature and let out a gasp when he came into focus. He was magnificent, unlike any other soquili or stallion she had ever laid eyes upon, he had a snow white coat that had hints of green around his hooves and nose, but what had caught her attention the most was the stunning vibrant tree with glowing fruit that grew out of his back. The Warrior Angeni had heard tales of those rare soquili who had become a carrier of sacred trees, perhaps this stallion standing before her was one of the soquili the tales had described. A few moments passed and he stopped in front of her, his body tense, as if he was suspecting her to attack; it made her ponder how she must look to him, but then that thought disappeared as soon as it invaded her mind, she did not care what she looked like as long as she could avenge her fallen herd.

“Is it?” She gazed at him with her sorrowful eyes, which were more than likely blood shot due to her lack of sleep and grief. “I don’t believe there is such a thing as a good day… not anymore.”

Yggdrasil tilted his head at the mare as she gasped; for a moment wondering what it was that had surprised her. It took him a few seconds to remember that not everyone had seen one such as he. Turning his head, he looked at the tree for a moment before turning his attention back to the mare. She spoke and his heart shattered in his chest. Her voice.. it held no emotion except sorrow.. loneliness.. anger.. There was not a hint of happiness in this mare.

"Perhaps you've not yet experienced a good day." Yggdrasil let his body relax. He didn't think this mare was a threat to him. She was probably more of a threat to herself. He made note of the redness of her eyes. Either crying or lack of sleep; maybe even both. "My name is Yggdrasil. I'm a great listener should you feel the need to talk."

He felt for the mare, even though he didn't know why it was she seemed so.. damaged? Broken? All of the above? She could be evil, for all he knew. But to him, at this very moment all he saw was a mare who needed something. To vent, to talk, to have a shoulder to cry on. Whatever it was he was prepared to offer it. He hoped she would accept and take the weight off of her shoulders.

The war I remember, the first in the world, when the gods with spears had smitten Gollveig, and in the hall of Hor had burned her.

A searing pain shot through her chest as the memories of the good wonderful days filled with happiness ad love clouded her head; her already bloodshot eyes became saturated with unshed tears. Her voice was coarse with unexpressed emotion, “I have had many good days, but they are the past, and I do not see any in the future.” She turned her blurry gaze to the tree soquili, her body screaming at her to be wary but her heart and soul had a different reaction. Rin felt as if she should trust the stallion standing before her, but the sensation was strange after her month of solitude and remorse. “I’m Rin Asougi, the last of the Vigdís. I shouldn’t be alive.” Her emerald eyes glazed over and looked out over the landscape, unable to see the beauty of what lay before her, for the screams of her fallen comrades echoing in her ears and the blood of her family stained her vision.

His presence was preventing her from planning her attack on the shadow being, she just wanted this Yggdrasil gone, to leave her alone, but she was unable to voice her inner thoughts. Perhaps something in her being wanted her to life, to accept a new life and not live in the torture of the past.

Yggdrasil watched the mare carefully. Not a single pleasant emotion was expressed by her; she seemed empty of all light. It was probably selfishness that made him take a step forward, and then another. Selfishness because he knew if he did not at least try to help this mare, her sadness would haunt him for the rest of his days. He was closer to her now, a few meters. He noted the unshed tears and wished she'd just let them out, no matter how much she'd cried already.

The last of her kind? Though he didn't know the circumstances, he understood now why she was so broken. To be the last was such a heavy burden, even without the weight of what had happened weighing down on you.

"But you are alive, Rin." He said gently. "And that is a good thing."

Yggdrasil shifted his weight between his feet for a moment before lowering himself down to the ground, weight of the tree becoming too much after traveling for so long. "I hope you don't mind. It's been a long day and I'm quite exhausted." He let out a sigh and stretched. "You look just as exhausted as I do. Come now, sit and talk to me. Release whatever is making you hold back those tears."

He didn't expect the mare to sit. He wouldn't force her, despite how much he wished she would talk to him. He understood burdens; loss and guilt. He'd been the same way as she, but he'd pushed through and now here he was. The mare seemed strong and he knew she would do the same.

Then from the throng did three come forth, From the home of the gods, the mighty and gracious;

She stiffened. He continued to get closer to her, why could he not just leave and allow her to have her revenge upon the dark being? “How is it a good thing? To be alive, when so many of the ones I loved are dead? Their blood soaking into the thirsty earth? Why is it a good thing to live with this pain and with the thought that I should be dead to, but some wicked twist of fate changed that destiny?” Her voice hitched and was raw with emotion, “I do not see the good in this life I currently live.”

Rin Asougi sniffed as she watched the tree stallion lower himself to the ground, “I would rather not.” She began to pace, she knew that she could just leave and never see this stallion again, but something was keeping her there, something inside of her wanted to trust the stallion, wanting her to tell him her tale. The last of the Vigdís let out a deep sigh, “It was the night of my initiation into the ranks of the elite warriors of the Vidgís, but instead of merriment, the night was filled with death and sorrow. A dark creature, who was unlike anything we had ever seen before, came out of the woods, its eyes a bright red and the metallic stench of blood emanated off of it… The warriors formed to attack the beast, fearing for the young ones, but they were not prepared for the strength and maliciousness that the creature possessed.”

Rin stared at the stallion, but she was not really seeing Yggdrasil, she was remembering the fight, her voice hallow, “Muninn, the stallion who was going to be my lifemate was one of the first to be slain, for he was the bravest warrior of them all and attempted to protect those he loved until his last breath; witnessing his death…it sent me into a frenzy and I attacked the dark creature with a battle cry… but the creature batted me away as if I was nothing more than a pesky fly…” Rin looked up at the sky, tears now falling freely down her face, “Its.. his voice was coarse, thick with lack of use, and the sounds of his words sent a shiver down the my spine, ‘No,’ it said, ‘ you will not die tonight; this celebration is in your honor, you best do to remember that!’” Rin shivered as she remembered the sensation his words did to her body, “After his words, a guttural laugh came out of him that echoed through the woods, stopping many of the brave warriors in mid attack, they appeared unsure how to conquer this beast… I tried to attack him again, but I was not and am not strong enough to defeat that wicked creature and he sent me flying to the blood soaked ground of my herd… I cannot remember anything else after that, for I blacked out to the death and destruction.” She fixed her green gaze onto the stallion, “can you see why I feel there is no more happiness in my world.”

Yggdrasil let the mare speak and while he said no words, his facial expressions said everything for him. That such a mare could go through such a thing and have the will to even walk.. She was a lot stronger than she gave herself credit for. When she finished speaking, he was silent for a few moments before looking up at her. He did not smile this time. His face was serious.

"You've been through much, Rin. Things that some see in their worst nightmares and couldn't even begin to dream of." He paused for a moment, the images of what she told him running through his mind causing a shudder to ripple through his body. His eyes locked with hers. "But you have the strength to walk on. After everything, you're here, talking to me, walking on to whatever awaits you. You can only get stronger after this."

a frowned crossed Yggdrasil's features now. "But I hope you have the knowledge to know how to use that strength. How to use the rest of your life in a way that honours those you have lost without the cost of your own life. Who will tell the story of those brave warriors if no one else is left?"

Yggdrasil stood from the ground. "I'll walk with you, if you'll allow me. Even if just for a few clicks."

Alone I sat, when the Old One sought me, the terror of gods, and gazed in mine eyes:

In his green eyes, greener than the tree upon his back, was a varying array of emotion: compassion, sorrow, and so many more that Rin did not wish to place for all she wished to do was bow her head. She was confiding in a stranger, telling her of the dark entity that slew her entire clan, would that darkness now come after the caring tree soquili? Worry filled her, the first emotion she felt beside sadness for the past month, had she now doomed Yggdrasil to the same bloody fate as the rest of the Vidgís? She prayed to Odin that he would not.

She shook her head, unwilling to believe his words, how could she become stronger when all she felt was broken? “I cannot see how I will become stronger, when I feel shattered.” She bowed her head as his words pounded into her skull, she needed to stop wallowing and begin to live, enjoy the life that was given to her at the sacrifice of so many. Her head shot up quickly and her blurry emerald eyes found the sitting tree soquili, in her grief she had forgotten that if she perished, so did the values and the stories of the Vidgís. Without her, they would fade in to myth, forever expressed in a tale to scare naughty children into behaving. “I had not thought of it that way. It would not do them any honor to have their valiant efforts forgotten because I was brash in wanting to get myself killed.” Who was this stallion to make her see reason during her darkest hour?

As he removed himself off the ground the giant tree on his back swayed and the fruit appeared more golden when rays of sunlight touched them, Rin Asougi gave a slight nod to the stallion, still in shock at being talked out of her suicide mission. “A few clicks are fine…”

Her stunned blurry glaze turned to the path ahead, then she nervously looked back at the stallion who changed her life so drastically in such a short amount of time, “How did you do that? Make me see reason? Who are you really?” He had to be more than just a good listener or perhaps Rin was just easily swayed out of choices. She shook her head, she doubted it was the latter, Muninn used to tell her that she was the most stubborn mare he knew, and that was saying something, since his mother was a force to be reckoned with who, once she made a stand, would never back down until others agreed with her view or just left her alone. A sad smile appeared on Rin’s countenance, thinking of Muninn made her heart ache, but she knew, now that the fog of depression was somewhat lifted, that he would have wanted her to live and not throw her life away.
