Voodoo sat in a clearing, going over the items before him to make sure they were all there. Primrose? Check. Pan filled half way with purified water? Check. Fresh twig stripped of its leaves and singed on one end? Check. Fire? Check. He picked up the primrose, pulling the petals away and dropping them in the pan. Placing the pan on the fire, he let the water boil for a few minutes before taking it off and letting it sit to cool. Once cooled, he removed the petals. He rose, holding the twig singed end down above the pan and dropped it, a little bit of water splashing out as it hit. It bobbed around, still catching its ground before it floated. Voodoo stared at the twig. This would tell him where to go, how to find what it was he was missing. He looked around his teepee, eying all the various ingredients. Bones, hair, dolls, garlands and garlands of herbs, vials of blood and tears. Oils, salves, potions and water. Flowers, bark, roots and seeds. Ribbons, candles, feathers and precious gems and crystals. Scraps of paper were scattered around, blank or with words scribbled on them. Everything he needed for his work. Nothing he could use to give a clear indication to where or what he was searching for. Even now what he was doing was simply a guide - the fate's sending him in a direction. He would follow, of course. Why not leave it up to fate since he had no other means of locating it? His eyes glanced down at the stick. It was no longer floating. The divination had failed. Even the fates did not know where to point him.

Lapin wasn't entirely sure where she had ended up this time, yet the small foal wasn't exactly lost either. She had gotten pretty good at wondering off and then somehow managing to find her way home at the end of the day. Mother and grandpa often worried when she was gone, mainly because she was so young and because there were many dangers in these lands, but Lapin couldn't argue when her legs started moving. Today was one such day and through her endless energy Lapin had wound up someplace new. New things always excited her. Her short fluffy tail flicked happily behind her as she walked through the trees.
A strange scent reached her nostrils causing her to pause suddenly. What was that? She had never smelled anything like this before. Curiosity getting the better of her Lapin headed towards the smell, occasionally stopping here and there to sniff the air and ensure she was going in the right direction. Sneaking through the underbrush Lapin eventually found herself at the edge of a small clearing. Hiding amongst the bushes the small foal peered out between the leaves and finally saw the source of the smell; fire. She had never seen fire before yet her family had talked about it from time to time. Fire could be dangerous when the forest was taken over by it. Yet this fire was small and seemed to be tended by one very large stallion. Then she saw the most amazing thing. That stallion had a tree on his back! Oh my gosh that was crazy! Much as Lapin wanted to rush out and assault him with questions she remained hidden for the moment watching what he was doing. She watched him closely, just what was he doing with that stick, and those things scattered around him what were they for?
Whatever he was doing it appeared to be over now. A frown formed on her lips for but a moment. She hadn't seen anything happen but really wanted to know what he was doing. Stepping out from her hiding spot Lapin confidently trotted over to where the stallion was and glanced at the fire, pan of water and stick within, then her gaze turned up to the stallion. "What were you doing? Why do you use fire? Fire can burn the trees down, did you know that? Hey you have a tree on your back, is it heavy? How did it get there? What are those things hanging from it? You're very big! Hey what are those?" She looked towards the herds, dolls, hair and bones. "What are they for? What are these?" She lowered her head nosing a piece of paper nearby, before finally stopping her onslaught of questions that seemingly came out in one giant sentence.

Voodoo was beginning to think this was all hopeless. The magic he practiced was all a load of bull; nothing was going to give him the answers he wanted. He needed a miracle; not magic he wasn't sure even worked. Angrily, he kicked the pan aside; sending it clattering into the bushes and water splashing everywhere. Picking up a pot, he placed it over the fire, covering and extinguishing it. That was enough 'magic' for today. He'd had enough disappointment.
Standing, Voodoo began collecting the items he'd used, placing them along various benches and shelves. Reaching into the bush, he collected the pan, but left the twig there. What use was it to him now that it had failed? Looking up at the sky, Voodoo squinted his eyes at the sun. Blinding; bright. It couldn't be missed by anyone. It was always there for someone to find. If only the answers he needed were blinding like the sun. Maybe this would be easier.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a voice. Turning around, he watched as a small foal nosed his belongings. Already irritated enough as it is; this was about to push him over the edge. The foal spoke quickly, shrilly and in one long sentence. When she was finished she seemed to still and calm. For how long it lasted he didn't know. Frowning in annoyance, Voodoo stared at her.
"What," he gritted through his teeth. "Are you doing here."

Lapin startled a bit when the giant stallion kicked the pan. She may be young but she could tell he was upset about something. But that still didn't explain just what he was doing with the fire and all those other items. And it certainly didn't explain the tree on his back! How the heck did that get there? So many questions she wanted to ask, heck she had already asked quite a few, yet no answers had come from the large stallion standing before her. Instead he had in turn asked a question of her. Well, that's not how things went. Someone asked a question, then gave an answer and then they could ask questions. His frown had barely registered to her, of course he would be frowning, since whatever he had been doing hadn't worked.
Well if he wasn't going to answer her questions then she would just have to answer his and hope afterward he would answer hers. "Well..." Lapin took a deep breath before explaining herself. "I was at home, then I started to run, I like running, and I was going really fast and then I found some trees, and I ran around them, then I didn't know where I was but I kept running, I like running, do you run? Sometimes when I run I get going sooooo fast I don't know where I'm going, or sometimes I trip and fall but I get up really fast after that. Mommy says that's a good thing. That when you fall or don't get what you were trying to do that you just have to try again until you get it." A small breeze floated through shifting a few of the papers, momentarily distracting Lapin from what she was saying. Her eyes watched as the paper danced in the wind before remembering what she was doing. Her gaze returned to the large stallion before her and she continued her onslaught of information.
"Then I smelled smoke, mommy says smoke and fire are bad, so I came to find out what the fire was doing. This one didn't look so bad, it's kind of small. Then I saw you, you were doing something, but I didn't know what, so I hide in the bushes and watched. But then you stopped which is when I came out and asked you those questions but you didn't answer them, you just asked me what I was doing here." Lapin paused long enough to catch her breath before continuing. "So what were you doing? And why do you have a tree on your back? And what are these things? Why did you have a fire? How did you make the fire?" Her head tipped slowly to the side looking up at him. "And why don't you have a mane?"

It seemed the Gods - or whoever loved to taunt him - were testing his limits today. He gritted his teeth, frown deepening and mouth opening with a light snarl. Of course, despite his appearance and current temperament; and the nightmares that told him otherwise; he was not one to harm a child. A deep breath, he exhaled some of his anger, promising to curse whoever had cursed him. Today was going to be a long day before the foal had arrived; now it appeared it was going to stretch on forever, an endless torment. At least he wouldn't be able to sleep if she was constantly questioning the existence and reasons of everything. Eying her a little more gently now, though the frown still creasing his forehead, he dug his hooves into the ground as she let off a string of words that seemed to form a million questions and one sentence at the same time. Calm, Voodoo. She's just a child. He eyed the tree on his back. He didn't know why it was there; a curse he had guessed and he'd tried for weeks to try and remove it with painful results that proved it was impossible. Inwardly he shuddered at the memory. That was not a tale for a child, that even he knew. "I don't do anything without gaining something, little one," he grumbled out. "Unless you're going to offer me something in return, I'll not be answering your questions." His annoyance returned and he glared at her. "What child travels on their own? You should be home with your mother, warm and safe where monsters like me can't hurt you." He leaned down, snout to snout, eying her; though his eyes were barely visible in the shadows of his mask. Perhaps he could scare her off and be done with it.

Lapin watched as the large beast breathed deeply. He must have inhaled too much smoke. See that's why mother said fire was a bad thing. This stallion must not realize what bad things come from fire. Or maybe he did and he didn't care. Her eyes looked over the tree perched upon his back once more. He sure didn't like to answer her questions about it. Did he not know? Perhaps not want to tell her? Maybe he thought she wouldn't sit still longer enough to hear the story. Lapin couldn't help it that she needed to keep on the move but that didn't mean she wouldn't listen if he were to tell a story. When he finally spoke Lapin drew her attention away from the tree.
"Oh! Like a trade! Is that what you mean? I give you something and you answer my questions! Hey, I can do that!" What exactly she would end up giving him Lapin wasn't entirely certain at the point. And before she could take an opportunity to look about for something to offer the stallion lowered his head looking her straight in the eye. "Hey! You have a neat mask! My sister has a mask too. But she usually only wears it when she is feeling scared or shy. Her name is Poe. And she has little tentacles that she uses to hold onto her mask. Isn't that cool!" It would become obvious to the stallion by now that Lapin was not one to be scared off easily. The idea of being intimidated being even register in Lapin's mind, she was far too curious to back down now. That reminded her she needed to find something to exchange for him answering questions. "Oh I don't always travel alone." She began as she walked away looking for something that wasn't the stallions property nearby. "But sometimes the herd is busy and I can't wait, so I started running around and then I end up in places like here!"
Near the edge of the small clearing she saw a pine cone. Lapin was fairly certain it wasn't already the stallions as it was half hidden under some leaves. She glanced back at the stallion for a moment to make sure he hadn't moved before turning her attention back to the pine cone. "I heard a funny story about a tree once. Mother told it to me. She heard it one of her travels." Scooping the pine cone into her teeth Lapin pranced happily back over to the stallion before placing it on the ground before him. "I found this pine cone. Now will you answer my questions?" She looked up at him with pleading eyes. That likely wouldn't work on him but since most herd members were effected by it she tried anyways.

Voodoo breathed in sharply as her voice piqued up once more, grating on his whole existence. Were all children like this? To think long ago he had actually wanted children. How foolish he had been. If this was the outcome, he was glad it had never happened. Though he imagined his children would be less.. frustrating? Annoying? Whatever this foal was, he had to get rid of her; preferably before he lost his temper. That wasn't going to be easy, it seemed. She was too innocent and curious to be frightened off. It was take a trick. Or a miracle. Perhaps her parents would come looking for her and he could send her on her way and be done with it. He watched her carefully as she puttered around, looking for something to trade with. She was looking in his own belongings, but he ignored the fact. The quicker this was over and done with, the better. A.. A pinecone. That was what she offered? Did she not realise that the whole forest was full of pine trees? He hid the frown that was nudging at his features and suppressed a sigh - though it took all his strength. And then he paid attention to what she said and his eyes widened. A story about trees? Was it perhaps about him? "The story," he blurted out. "I want to hear the story. I'll trade anything for it."

Lapin was no fool, she may have been ignorant of the stallions attempts to get rid of her, but she didn't miss the intense and sudden interest he had when she mentioned the story about a tree. In fact he went so far as to say he would trade anything for it. That brought a smile to the small foals lips. Here she was initially thinking she could get him to answer a question in exchange for the pine cone she had found, now he was offering her anything for the story her mother had told her. He didn't need to know that she couldn't remember it all. Lapin was certain she remembered enough to satisfy this stallion and in the end she would get something great out of it. But what should she ask for? She had questioned him about what he had been doing when she had first stumbled upon him but asking those questions again seemed silly. Especially when he was offering to give her so much more.
"I'll tell you the story about the tree if you teach me what it was you were doing earlier. I want to know everything." It seemed like a fair deal to her, it would take a bit of effort for her to recall all the details of the story her mother had told her and he seemed to be pretty skilled in whatever it was he was doing earlier so it would take little effort to teach her - if she could keep her concentration here and now of course. That would be the hardest thing, Lapin knew how flighty she was, one moment something would have her attention and the next she would be racing off after something new and more exciting. But if she was to learn this she would need to remain clam, still and attentive. She could do that! Her sister Poe did it all the time, so it made sense that she would have that ability as well, it would just take more effort than it did for Poe.
Of course, before she started to spout off the story Lapin wanted to make sure the stallion agreed. It would be a huge disappointment if she told him the story and got little to nothing out of it in the end. "Is it a deal, the story for you teaching me those things?" Lifting her head Lapin did he best to stare into his eyes, showing she would only tell him what she had heard if he agreed, plus she really wanted to know all about what he was doing. Don't look at the items, she scolded herself, keep staring at him until he agrees. Her eyes narrowed a bit as she focused hard on the stallions eyes.
