The dinner had gone by nice enough. It was a dressy affair, her mother going all out to look the part of a rich benefactor. Adira was dressed a little more conservatively in a simple black dress and heels with bows on the back. It was clear at the beginning of the dinner that Zac had recognized her, but they really hadn't had an opportunity to talk until the dinner was over and done with.
Not to say the event was over, however. After the dinner came a mingling session with several different types of bite sized deserts, as well as a variety of different types of drinks. Even in her heels, she stood about level with the big winner, noting that he'd seen to have grown a few inches since their last encounter.
"Congratulations on winning the scholarship Zac. You certainly deserved it, you had quite an impressive application." She gave him a knowing smile as she positioned herself in a comfortable speaking distance. She held two small deserts in her hands from the tables along the wall, and one of them she offered to him. "How does it feel?" Even though Adira never had to experience it, she could at least pretend that she did- she was good at that.

He adjusted the tie around his neck, loosening it slightly and then carefully took the small desert from her hand. “I can honestly say I can’t believe my good fortune. I might have to take a creative writing class so I can find a proper way to describe the feeling.” He hesitated, remembering that somewhere in his rush to graduate high school and remove himself from the home he grew up in, he’d lost the card she’d given him.
“Thank you though, I’m glad someone was impressed by it.” A small pause before he added. “I kind of, I lost that card, I’m sorry I never called I probably should have. It's nice to meet you again even if it's by surprise."

She smiled genuinely at his eagerness for the scholarship, which made it all the better. Adira hadn't planned on, and wasn't going to tell him about her roll in the choice, but it was still nice to get his reaction. A bite of chocolate pastry was eaten before she continued. "It was quite impressive, I had no idea you played the violin."
"It's alright, losing cards does happen sometimes. Though I guess I wouldn't call our meeting a surprise, the 'P' in PSC does stand for Perses, and the scholarship was my mothers idea." She laughed a little and shook her head at that. "Apparently charity is en vogue this season."
It was a few seconds before she realized how awful that must have sounded. "I'm sorry... I didn't really mean it that way it came out. She was just inspired by many of her friends doing similar events." It wasn't a very good backtrack, but she was trying very hard not to alienate the boy next to her. For good measure Adira finished off the pastry instead of continuing to talk.

“It’s alright, I’m glad it was, I needed it.” He paused realizing the name and made an ‘O’ of surprise for a moment before eating his own pastry to cover the rudeness of his shock. Let no one say he didn’t learn from others.
“I’ve played for a long time, It’s something I find relaxing, just part of my life I guess, if they aren’t shipping you to some school in the French Riviera maybe I’ll have to play it for you sometime?” He offered. “If you like violin I mean.” He wasn’t sure what else to say, it was a warm feeling to hear his application called impressive, but how he should respond to that without pinging of vanity or arrogance was a little beyond him; that and the fact that his suggestion on where she might be being sent to school might have been rude on its own.
“I didn’t mean that in a bad way, the French thing I mean.” He stumbled over the apology clumsily.

"It's quite alright. My mother certainly intended that I be shipped off somewhere, though I don't think the French Riviera was an option on the list." She laughed on purpose, trying to show him that she was just joking. Adira knew all too well that social situations without knowing exactly what to say could be very awkward.
"But I would love it if you played for me at some point. Perhaps you can find time during the semester, considering we'll be schoolmates. I'm just starting at DCU this semester." The more she talked with this near-complete stranger, the more she realized that she knew nearly nothing about him, and had given him thousands of dollars without knowing much more than his name and resume. It was an interesting thought.
"Apparently we are both full of apologies tonight." Apologies came with the awkward conversation that stemmed from two people meeting for the first time. "Do you think you'll study music or the violin while at university?"

“I think I will, I mean if that won’t mess up the scholarship. Part of me still wants to be good enough to do it professionally, though I don’t know that I have the time to dedicate to it with the time I’m spending at the Candy Sto…ore.” He broke the word awkwardly into two pieces realizing that it might be a faux pa to admit he had a job at all. “It’s…to pay the rent.” He added a little hastily. He didn’t feel like she was the type to run and try and make trouble but you couldn’t be sure, not even when you wanted to ‘like’ someone.
“What will you be studying?” He asked quickly trying to shift the subject to new areas. It was funny, they’d only met the two times before, and so briefly but there was just something familiar about her. Likely it was those eyes, the bright blue was intense and memorable. Likely he’d seen her in passing but remembered only that sense of familiarity when he’d met her in person rather than passing.
