Hey there all! I'm Rei the Wannabe Wizard... on Gaia, at least. On DeviantArt and Cosplay.Com, I'm just Reily96. You can call me whatever, though. XD

1/17/2012 - I decided to make a thread to document the progress of my Skyward Sword Zelda costume. Some of you may ask, "Weren't you doing Melfina of Outlaw Star?" Well, I am, but I'm not making that costume. But when I go to check on its progress, I'll happily update you on the progress of that one (in a separate post, though). But for now, the main focus shall be Zelda, since I myself and making this one. I'm getting a head start, though the costume will not actually be worn until July 14th... because I'll be attending the Symphony of the Goddesses in Orlando!

I'll be showing pictures, obviously, as well as explaining what I'm doing or plan to do, as well as asking for the occasional spot of help. After all, this is my first time making a costume by myself, and there are plenty of seasoned cosplayers in this guild who know much more than I do! I'm also going to go over how much money I've spent so far on this (and so far, it's already not cheap).

If this goes over well, I just may update any future cosplays I do here on this thread! (I'll probably archive older costumes on a separate site if it ever gets to that point)

The Dress

1/17/2012
Today, I went over to JoAnne's to look for a pattern and fabric. Since this is my first time sewing anything (with a machine, anyways), I had to find a simple enough pattern. I had high hopes because her dress is simple enough in construction. And hopes were well rewarded!
User Image

It's from Butterick's History collection, as you can see. With a few minor adjustments, the pattern will be perfect! And it's simple enough to boot!

Next was to find the fabric:
User Image
And ta-da! The fabric! It's nothing fancy, just regular cotton. Where I live, you kind of need to keep things simple or risk heatstroke. But I think the color is great!

*The Sculpey clay in the picture will be used help craft a mold for the gems on the dress and sash buckle, which I will be making from resin.

That's all for now. Tomorrow, I'll be cutting the pattern (but you won't need any updates on that)! Next update when I start sewing!

1/18/12
Pattern is cut. At a bit of a halt until I get some fabric scissors, though. SAD FACE. But I might be playing mad scientist with the resin tomorrow. If not, then I'll be gathering supplies for the belt and the sash buckle.

1/20/12
With fabric scissors bought, I started pinning the pattern to the fabric... Only problem? I ran out of pins! I may or may not go to JoAnne's to get some more pins tomorrow... Whatever the case, I'll finish pinning the pattern soon-ish, and when it's all pinned up, I'll cut up the fabric.

1/22/12

Pattern's all pinned up. Will cut soonish. *u*

1/26/12
With the pattern having been cut for a few days now, I started sewing!
User Image
That's just the front of the dress. I still need to work on the back, but that can wait till... soonish. I don't know if I'll be able to get to it tomorrow or during the weekend. But I started! 8D And hopefully, it'll come out fine. My first time sewing and I can tell you I already made a couple of mistakes. Hopefully, it won't show in the end product. >.>

2/3/12
I'm totally working on this, really. XD Anyways, the dress itself is made! All that's missing is a zipper in the back and the sleeves. I want to get the zipper and the interfacing done first before I get started on the sleeves. Anyways, the dress itself is pretty long. Kinda can't wait to chop it into size. >.> Pics coming soon!

2/9/12
User ImageMy dress! Tada! Sleeves got sewed on today with a little help from my mom! The dress, as I've said before, is too long. It'll be cut down to size soon. But first I need to handle another problem... That being the dress is too big! You probably can't tell from the pic, but the back is waaaaaaay too big. So I need to take it to my aun't so she can fix it up for me. Then I'll add the biasing (that's not going to be fun DX ) and the gem. I'm going to see if I can make the gem with a snap on the bottom so I can remove it when the dress needs washing.

3/6/12
Eeeeeee, been a while. But I wasn't able to get it fitted properly for a long while due to conflicting schedules with my aunt. But now that everything is sized and I've hemmed, I've begun to do the biasing! Yay! Pictures will be up when it's done.
3/7/12
Oh em gee, this biasing. This biasing, this biasing... I want to destroy it. *headdesk* Seriously, me and the maternal unit just spent a good deal of time just doing the biasing along the neckline. I kinda don't want to look at it for a few days. -w- Lyre work tomorrow.
3/23/12
Bias work is ALMOST DONE.
4/2/12
And the dress. Is. 100%. DONE.
User Image
BOOSH.

The Drape
4/11/12
I've been working on Zelda's drape, but haven't got around to updating this yet. Whoops. >.> Anyways, so, I'm actually working on the second one. Yes, second. I had some spare fabric that I was planning on using for something else. It just happened to be the colors I needed. So I cut up the fabric, had a bunch left over. Then I made a stencil... and then after painting it, I promptly ruined it. Fabric spray may seem easier, but it's kinda not. >.> So, after ruining that fabric, I had just enough left over fabric for one more try. I used up all my spray paint so I had to go and pick up more. I used brush on this time. I didn't bond my stencil strongly enough, so the paint kinda of bled out a bit, but I fixed that with some puffy paint. Now I'm just waiting for the puffy paint to completely dry, and then I'll add the biasing tomorrow - hopefully.

4/13/12
And Zelda's drape is now finished!
User Image
Yay! All that's left is the wig and ears! :3

Sailcloth
4/27/12
Started on the sailcloth! The plan is to not have it be an actual parachute but a bag rigged to look like the shawl version of it. I made the pattern myself for what I'm calling a "shawlpack." It's not going to meant to carry anything heavyduty, though. >.> Anyways, I got the material from great aunt. I already cut it. I just want to get some interfacing for the pouch part of it before I sew it all together.

4/29/12
So the sailcloth was done in no time. :3 It's nearly completed, I just need to sew in the zipper - which I'll probably do tomorrow. Yay!

Props and Edits

1/20/12

Yesterday I bought the molding supplies (resin casting epoxy, liquid latex, resin spray, and SuperSculpey Firm). Using the SuperSculpey, I made a small pyramid just a little over 2 1/2 inches in diameter. I baked it, then painted a few layers of liquid latex over it. I sped up the drying process with my good'ol hair dryer, but I still left it to dry overnight. Today I touched up the inside of the latex mold. When I cast the resin it won't be perfect, but it'll pass for good enough for me. XD Pictures will be up in a few days when the resin has been cast and its done!

1/22/12

Resin has been cast! Just waiting for it to harden now.

1/26/12
Pictures of the resin process are here~
The clay mold base:
User Image >>And here's the liquid latex. XP User Image
All dried up, it looks like this: User Image
With that, as well as some good ol' Castn'Craft, I produced... these!
User Image
Obviously, they're not perfect. I need to sand them down so they're nice and pretty, as well as make one about half its size; then I'll add some varnish to take out some of those imperfections and get some more shiny on there. It should be passable in the end. XD

2/3/12
Been a while! Oops! But I have been working on the costume! Just the other day I got my wood bits in to make the belt! I got some regular wooden discs and "dome" shapes. The domes are slightly smaller than the discs, so I just glue-gunned them together and got the basic shapes for Zelda's belt! I sealed them, then painted them gold, used some other paint to wear it a little, touched up the gold again, sealed them again... and ta-da! Zelda's gold belt! It's not strung together yet (I'm prolly gonna glue them on a ribbon with Velcro ends), but that part is essentially done. I'll get some pics up soon! heart
2/6/12
Pictures of the belt are up!
User Image
These are the wood pieces. On the left are the two pieces separate, right, together. Whipped out the good old glue gun to attach them.
User Image
That's the whole belt, painted and strung together with an opaque ribbon I found. I painted it with gold and added some "wear" with some copper and black paint. The ribbon was glue-gunned to the wood pieces, and then reinforced with a layer of wood glue. As of now, the belt hooks together with Velcro - while it holds fairly well, I want to invest in a hook clasp sooner or later. In the end, it was sealed with a coat of clear matte acrylic.
User Image
Just a close up.
2/22/12
So it ends up I couldn't take the lazy way out and just buy a sash like I wanted to. Everything I've found just hasn't been right, and things that were suitable didn't have a fringe. So last night I decided I'd make it myself. Looked up a fabric with a fringe on JoAnne's website, then went today to get it. Also got some interfacing to stick in between the fabric so it wasn't just a loose wad of fabric - because the sash looks leatherette or something like that (the fabric itself is like a faux suede). I pieced them together with a messy result... so to make it look pretty, I sewed some pale yellow lace onto the ugly sash seam I made and ended up with something looking pretty nice. It may not be actually there in the game, but I think the lace adds a flare that'll say "Hey, it's that Zelda cosplayer!" Added the decorative threading, and tada.
User Image
I just need to make the "buckle" thing now to complete it... But that's for another day. I just spent three hours of labor on this and my back hurts. X_x

3/6/12

In this area, I've managed to do a whole lotta work. I fixed up my resin gems and gave them the blue backing. Made the brooch for Zelda's dress, which will be secured on the dress using snaps (that way it'll be removable for washing purposes). Then I began work on the sash buckle thing. I ended up getting a thick sheet of craft foam, gave it a fabric backing using the spare sash fabric I had, gessoed it, glued it, painted it, sealed it and sewed a clip on it so that the sash closes together. The buckle itself is removable via Velcro. It's pretty ugly to look at when you know it's there, but it's out of view otherwise. XD I have pictures, I'm just too lazy atm. Sorry. D:

I've also decided to work on the lyre. It just came as a whim, and I never had any initial plan to make it at all. But I figured, Zelda and the lyre. She pretty much always has it, save for when Link has it. So, with all the cardboard at my disposal, I cut out the pieces and hot glued them together. I'm going to be using some old wire coat hangers for the strings, but I need to attach that stupid wooden stick first. But my dad needs to cut it first since it's a little long. I plan to paper mache it all to give it some extra strength, put the 'carvings' in with a craft foam layer above everything, and then paint it. But I'll probably handle that at the very, very end. -w-

3/8/12
So I lied. I've totally been working on the lyre because after last night working with biasing, I kind of don't want to look at the dress for a few days.
User ImageUser Image
-w- I noticed the shape was kind of off on the initial cardboard skeleton, so to remedy it, I put some cardboard inserts on afterwards. After messing around with the wire cutters and using two metal coat hangers as my victims, I got my 'strings.' Hot glued them to the cardboard. Got my small wooden pole as a counterbalance, and then paper mache'd the cardboard bits. Ta-da. It's still a bit messy, so sometime soonish I'm going to paint a layer of plaster over it before I gesso and paint it. By the way, the cost of the cardboard and plaster and the coat hangers is not going to be included in this project because this is stuff I've had lying around my house. >.>

Oh yeah, I also said I'd upload pics of my sash buckle and the improved gems. Bam.

3/15/12
And here's a link to the current looks of the harp. It's a little big to post it here and I'm feeling particularly lazy and not wanting to deal with photobucket right now. Nonetheless, I really hope you all take a look at it. I'm really proud of it so far. I just need to paint it. X3

4/11/12
This has been done for a bit, so I was surprised to see I didn't update this sooner. Here's the completed lyre:
User Image

4/15/12
So I ordered my ears today. Took a big chunk out of my wallet. Enough so that I am holding off on buying my wig until my next paycheck in two weeks. -w- Nonetheless, I'm sure they'll be worth it. They're uber long and from the ever reputable Aradani Studios - so I expect they'll be worth the money.

4/27/12
Wig came in today. It is incredibly long and needs to be styled accordingly, but I love the color. Special thanks to lunaishtar on Cosplay.Com for referring me to the wig! X3

5/4/12
I'm redoing the brooch gem. It looks all... off. And it's been bothering me for a while. I'm just waiting for the professional mold to come in, then I'll start on it. Not sure if I want to try using some blue food coloring to make some color or stick with the backing... I suppose I'll use a little and if it's not enough, give it the backing.

I know I'm excited. I just underestimated the back pain that comes with hunching over the table to pin the pattern to the fabric. XD That and I ran out of pins. SAD FACE. Just another excuse to head over to JoAnne's and get more. XD

Hopefully the actual dress can be done within a few days, time and real life obligations permitting. I just need to get the biasing and the zipper. X3 And that leather belt... I just have no idea where I can find a leather belt like that, though. I know Michael's sells leather remnants and swatches, but none long enough to make a belt like that. X.x

I might have to use PVC or something for it...

Thanks. Zelda certainly is making me put all my effort into her. sweatdrop The sash in particular was hell, mostly because I kind of just kind of just started on it without planning. It worked out in the end, but I kind of realized the importance of patterns. ^^;
