Another bright sunny day in Katarina. Ms. Sparkles had rented a relatively cheap apartment in the city, as she was beginning her journey to become a gym leader. The sun danced on the rainbow flocks of her hair. Her clothes were brightly colored, as well.

This particular day, she was on her way to the local PokeMart for Pokemon food for her Whimsicott. She smiled to herself, feeling unusually cheerful. She only wished she had someone to talk to. Being a new trainer in the city was much more difficult than she thought. So many unfamiliar faces.

"Oh, Chromatic! Maybe you can walk with me to the store, and we can chat, okay? Besides, I think Pokemon could use some exercise every once in while. I'm not sure how comfortable it is, being in a tiny ball." Ms. Sparkles was used to talking to her Pokemon as friends. She was sure they understood everything she says, though she doesn't know how.

The trainer dug into a bag, and released her Whimsicott. The Pokemon was a small hoofed creature standing at 2' tall, with poofy black wool along her back from head to tail. When released, she peered around, as if expecting a battle. After making sure they weren't in a stadium, she gazed at her trainer with large pink eyes, as if saying, "What's up?"

"Oh, there's no battle. I just want to talk!" Ms. Sparkles gave the Whimsicott a reassuring pat on the head. "I'm just on my way to the store, and was thinking you'd like to walk with me since it's such a nice day? Maybe you can even pick what you'd like to eat! Well, come along, then." She continued on her way, accompanied by Chromatic.

Arissa had arrived in the city not long ago and was still getting a feel for it. She and her Archen, Kishin, were wandering around aimlessly and just looking. Her mother had once told her that the best way to learn your way around a place was to get lost, then find your way back. Not that she had anywhere to go back to, aside from maybe the dock. Then again, maybe she could find some point of reference to explore from, like a Pokemon Center or something.

But before she found one, she noticed an unusually-colored Whimsicott walking along beside a young woman. She'd seen the species before back in Unova, but never one with black and pink wool. She couldn't help going over to admire the pokemon, and Kishin trotted along with her.

"Wow, that's a beautiful Whimsicott! Is she yours?" She asked the young woman and she approached. "I've never seen one in such colors, and it's quite stunning."

Ms. Sparkles wasn't expecting anyone to approach her because she didn't know anyone in the city. She was just about to pass by a trainer and her Archen, when she realized someone was talking to her. She stopped in her tracks, and spun around.

"Oh! Are you speaking to me?" There was no one else with a Whimsicott nearby. She blushed, caught unexpectedly, but was quick to regain her composure. "Whimsicott-- I have one! Her name is Chromatic, isn't she lovely?"

Chromatic gazed up at both trainers in delight, as if saying, "You bet I am!"

"Your Archen's colors are stunning as well! Very cute combination." She paused, as if forgetting something. "How silly of me, here I am, gushing over Chromatic, when I forgot to introduce myself! I'm Ms. Sparkles, gym leader in training!" The trainer threw in the title, as if it was official. "Chromatic is my first battle Pokemon," she added, explaining.

"Nice to meet you!" Arissa said. "And Chromatic's a pretty name to go with such a pretty pokemon." She gave the Whimsicott a smile as she said this, then turned back to her trainer.

"I'm Arissa, and my Archen is Kishin." Kishin chirped a greeting when she was introduced. "I'm a future pokemon breeder, and I'm hoping to enter some Pokemon Contests, too. I'm interested in pokemon of unusual colors, which is why Chromatic first caught my eye."

Chromatic nudged Arissa with her nose upon being complimented.

"She likes attention," explained Ms. Sparkles. "It's nice to meet both of you too. I've never met a breeder before. Actually, I haven't met much of anybody outside of the stadium. I'm new to the city, and all I've been doing is training Chromatic."

The Whimsicott reared her horns, showing her strength. "I beat a legendary," she said. Though, all the humans heard was "Whim-whimsicott!"

"We're not battling right now, Chromatic!" Ms. Sparkles was a bit nervous for the Archen that was half the size of her own Pokemon, even though she knew she didn't need to be, since Whimsicott are weak to flying types.

Chromatic furrowed her brow in response, as if saying "Why not? There's a perfectly good opponent to battle, right here!"

"So what do you breed?" The trainer tried to carry on the conversation, and ignore her eager Whimsicott.

Arissa giggled at being nudged and rubbed Chromatic's head gently, feeling the soft fleece. "We're new to the city too. New to all of Zatao, really; we just got here today."

Kishin was happy to reply to Chromatic's boast, since none of the humans could.

To Ms. Sparkles' question, Arissa answered, "I'm hoping to breed Flying-types, especially anything with unusual colors. But of course I'll start with Kishin, see what I can find that would be a good match for her, and go from there."

"We just rented an apartment in the city. It's just Chromatic and me, for now. I'm looking for pretty Pokemon that I can add to my party, for when I become gym leader one day!" She smiled down at her Pokemon.

"It must be interesting to throw two Pokemon together to see what comes out!" Ms. Sparkles laughed. "Of course, with less throwing and more gentle, loving care. If Chromatic was of the same egg group and not a female, I'd totally offer her up. Though with her personality, I'm not sure she'd be as willing as I would be to give her up."

While the humans were chatting, Chromatic was striking up a conversation of her own. "Hey, why are you calling me a dear? You don't look any older than me." She stepped closer to the Archen, sizing her up. "In fact, you look quite tiny." Chromatic tried to egg the Archen into a battle.

"I suppose I ought to find a place to stay, too. Though I doubt they'll rent apartments to minors," she added as the thought occurred. "I suppose there's always camping out like a journeying trainer..." she chewed a lip a little as she considered options. "Does the Pokemon Center have places for trainers to stay?"

She had to giggle at the thought of throwing too pokemon together to get eggs. In her mind the scene turned into two pokemon flying at each other, hitting with a comic book "BANG!" word balloon, then pokemon and eggs flying in all directions. "Yes, I look forward to try and match pokemon to get pretty combinations. I'll have to keep a look out for a male bird I think would match well with Kishin."

Kishin blinked at the tone and tilted her head quizically. She had to look up at Chromatic when the sheep-like pokemon stepped forward. Not that she'd ever really battled, but she'd heard a bit about it.

"I'm sure they do. Many trainers travel from city to city, catching all sorts of Pokemon. Ten-year-olds wouldn't know how to rent anything, so they probably provide short term lodging in Poke Centers to trainers, as well as Pokemon. If you are looking for something more long term, I can offer up my place until you find something on your own. You don't look like a creeper, and that's good enough for me!" Ms. Sparkles beamed, excited to be making a friend.

"I do have to add that it's a tiny one-bedroom," she stated, a bit embarrassed. She didn't want Arissa to be expecting anything extravagant.

Chromatic laughed. "A punch from you would be like a being pelt with feathers." She shrugged off the Archen. "Kishin, wasn't it? Show me your strengths, then." She skipped back and forth, itching to battle.

The trainer was too busy chatting to notice.

The offer of lodging was an unexpected and welcome one, but she didn't want to intrude. "Oh, thanks for the offer, but a Pokemon Center's fine. I haven't decided what I'll be doing next here, anyway. I might decide to travel for a little bit anyway, see if I can find some pokemon I'd want to catch."

she said. Chromatic seemed pretty insistent on the matter, but Kishin wasn't really prepared to fight. She could probably trust her instinct to help her in a battle against an inexperienced pokemon like herself, but against one that was obviously a seasoned battler? She'd need her trainer's help to stand a chance. She took a step back looking uneasy.

Arissa heard a squawk from Kishin that sounded nervous or something, and looked over. Chromatic was practically looming over her pokemon, and the Archen did not look happy about it. It probably wasn't a good idea to get between two pokemon who looked ready to fight--well, one of them did, anyway--so instead she said, "Um, looks like Chromatic isn't taking 'no battling' for an answer."

"Oh! Of course," Ms. Sparkles answered. Maybe she was being too forward. "Well, my door's still open if you ever--"

A squawk from below brought the trainer's attention back to the Pokemon. Chromatic was eagerly eyeing the smaller Archen, who looked frightened by her advance.

"Chromatic! You're scaring the poor thing! I said we're not battling!" The girl tried to pull back her stubborn Pokemon.

"You're not scared, are you? Been living with your human too long to remember what battling was like?" The Whimsicott wouldn't budge. She didn't seem to be hearing what her trainer was saying-- or she didn't care.

Kishin answered slowly. And she really wasn't scared, precisely. Nervous would be more accurate. But she'd lived with humans ever since she hatched and hadn't battled in the while like most young pokemon. She'd had a couple battles, but only short practice things that didn't go until fainting. This looked like it'd be the real deal. Could she do it? Should she? She looked up at her trainer again, uncertainly.

Arissa was a bit torn, too. She didn't want to make Kishin fight if she didn't want to, but they could use battle practice. Battles were a part of contests after all, even though the focus was on beauty instead of fainting. "If you want to battle, we can. It's up to you," she eventually told her pokemon.

Kishin looked back at the Whimsicott. Being given the choice didn't help her much. Did it mean her trainer thought she could do it? She wouldn't have given permission if she thought not, right? Hesitantly, Kishin shifted her feet and lifted her wings slightly so she was ready to move quickly. she said to Chromatic.

At the first hint of Kishin's agreement to battle, Chromatic gathered a bright ball that absorbed the Archen's energy.

"Bad! Bad Chromatic!" It was all in vain. Ms. Sparkles couldn't hold the Whimsicott back.

The grass Pokemon leaped out of her trainer's grasp, and released her attack on the Archen.

Arissa stepped back quickly when she saw Chromatic attack. The Whimsicott sure was eager! Time to try out some of the moves she's been considering for contests. "Kishin, Acrobatics!"

Kishin squawked when the attack hit her and she left some of her energy drain away. At Kishin's command, she dashed towards her opponent and leaped to attack.

Arissa frowned slightly. She'd thought an attack called Acribatics would look more...well, acrobatic. Flashy. She'd have to work on that with Kishin.
