The past few days had felt ... out of sync. She'd seen him. Hugged him. Done homework. Gone to class.

None of it felt right. Not bad. Just not right.

Walking down the hallways to her next class, she spotted him talking with two blonde ghouls from human studies class. Why was he smiling and laughing like that? That was her smile, not their's. She was grabbing his arm now. Something about it made her upset. Why was Rikki doing that?

Her first thought was to run away and avoid the situation and odd feelings completely. Take the other hallway. Why was that? He was her boilfriend. She liked being near him, liked his dark eyes that always wandered when he talked, liked pressing her face against his sweatshirt and feeling the dull thud of his heart. He would back off those ghouls if she just explained what was wrong, right?

So why the Jack did she want to run away?!

Mechanically though, her feet brought her to his side, with a rehearsed, "Hi!" Her eyes were bright and happy as always, but her words lacked luster. Run away run away run away. Her hand slid into his. She only had a few moments before the bell rang again but...

He'd be lying if he said he hadn't noticed that the two ghouls in front of him were attractive, but he was a practiced liar. He also wasn't interested. Still, he flashed them a smile as he took back the pen that one of them had borrowed and laughed at the way she seemed genuinely embarrassed for forgetting. The way the other kind of threw herself at him was a little startling, but he didn't let it show. Not many ghouls bothered to even look at him, especially the ones who had a fear of fire.

His shoulders loosened when Danny came up and tucked her hand in his, and his smile softened fractionally. "Hey, Danny." The ghoul holding on to his arm let go reluctantly and lowered a scorching look at Danny, but they both turned and left, and Rikki was kind of glad. He felt out of practice socializing with anything vaguely resembling a female. Except Roch.

Danny shot the angry look straight back at the ghoul. Except, Danny was much more obvious about it. Whilst the other ghouls look was subtle and slightly sexy, Danny just looked like a 5 year old having a temper tantrum. One with her tongue stuck out.

Why did Rikki make her so flustered?

"What was that about?" she asked, partially curious and partially irked. She didn't think Rikki was flirtatious- heck she didn't even notice it most of the time. He was just grating on her lately. She felt like she couldn't keep up.

Rikki hadn't even noticed their glaring, having turned his attention down to his notebook as he tried to hide whatever homework he might have as best he could. If he couldn't find it, he didn't have to do it. Right? Right.

"Hm?" He looked up and tilted his head. "What was what? The girls?" He shrugged. "Neeancaht needed a pen so I let her borrow one of mine. I actually had two today," he finished with a bright grin, seemingly proud. Usually he didn't even have one pen. He didn't even consider that Danny might be jealous, or might disprove of something.

That smile. That smile.

Danny's face fell a little. Why was he so happy about the ghouls? Obviously he wouldn't get happy over a pen- Rikki wasn't that shallow- so it had to be the ghouls.

Still, she couldn't just get mad at him and blow up all over the place. Well, she could, but she was learning little by little about keeping calm in situations where she felt odd. Besides, Neeancaht was just borrowing it. So ... then why had the other ghoul been there? There was no need for a second ghoul. The way he was proud of having two ghouls too. Danny could just tell.

"Oh ... well that's ... okay," she said rather sullenly. She couldn't help it though. "Why were you smiling like that, then?" she asked, more to puzzle through it herself than really question his motives. Was it a bit selfish of her? Maybe. Lately she'd become about ten times more clingy. Ever since Christmastival Eve when he'd taken Edel's side. She'd wanted him on her side. All of him. Hers.

He gave her a startled look. Hadn't she heard what he'd said? He held up both of his pens and repeated himself. "I had two pens today! I never have pens." He shoved them in his pockets and tangled his hand with hers, looking down the hall. He didn't want to think about any other classes today, but he knew, somewhere down there, another teacher was waiting for him to take his seat. Ugh. Work.

"So what are you up to for the rest of the day?"

Danny wasn't quite aware of the class situation ever. Vaguely in her mind she knew the bell would ring in a few minutes, but wasn't really sure when ...

"Ummm. Classes and stuff, but after that I'm supposed to go running with Yin, and then pranking with Nahm and then Roch's gonna teach me more sheet music stuff," she said, listing the things off with her free hand, "I would go over to Moure's, but ... um ..." She didn't finish the sentence. Rikki could figure out why.

Verdict? Do all the things with all the boils ever.

....

................................

Yin. Nahm. Roch. Moure. Four guys. She had plans, or hopeful plans, with four guys tonight and none of them were him. His pleased smile turned into a deep frown as he studied her face hard. "All those plans, huh? Busy night." He clenched his teeth, a little muscle in the side of his jaw working. It was probably a little unfair to be annoyed, but Rikki wasn't a fair player. All for one and none for anyone else. Yap.

Danny's hand slipped out of his, and they both went behind her head in a relaxed pose. She just wasn't in the mood for holding hands; it was odd because Danny always liked holding hands. With anyone. Really. "Yeah, and tomorrow I think I'm going to Spookies with Deacon."

Well she thought she was. She couldn't quite remember her schedule.

Oh wait, Danny didn't have a schedule.

LUCY. COME BACK.

Deacon? Who the jack was Deacon?

Rikki blew out an aggrivated sigh and bunched his shoulders. "Lots of guys in your life. You're a lucky ghoul," he gritted out between his teeth. Still she hadn't mentioned trying to do anything with him. but whatevs. He'd deal. In the corner of his room where he cried the sad tears of his heart.

Why did he look so angry? Did she do something wrong? Well why was she the one always doing things wrong? She was done with feeling behind. It was time for Rikki to own up (at least, in her mind it was. What he did wrong was anyone's guess).

"What's wrong?" she said, frowning slightly. After knowing him for so long (was it almost a year now?), she could tell when he was upset, and he was upset. His jaw was growing so tense; he was definitely angry.

But you know what? Something about it made her want to prod it. To fluster him. To get something.

"Nothing's wrong, Danny. What class do you have next, I'll walk you there," he evaded quickly. He didn't want to argue, didn't want to have a fight. Things were just better if he could avoid and then go off to cool off on his own for a while. He didn't want to say anything that might hurt his ghoulfriend.

Ohhh no he didn't. Something was definitely wrong. "Rikki," she said, not moving a single step from where she was, "What's wrong?" Her hands fell to her side, slumping her form trifold.

Why couldn't he just be honest with her?

She continued to prod. "What's wrong with Deacon?!" she pouted, eyes wide with confusion. Did Rikki not like Deacon? Was there something wrong about Spookies? She didn't get it. She didn't get it at all.

He groaned and rubbed his face. "Nothing is wrong, Danny. Just leave it, okay?" He didn't want to do this. He didn't want to be the bad boyfriend that didn't let her hang out with her friends, but jack dammit why did she have to have so many guy friends? It was frustrating to have to reel in his jealousy so often. And then there she was, making it worse, making him more irritable. "Why do you have to be so stupid?"

And just like that Danny's heart broke into a thousand little pieces. Stupid. He said stupid. Just like that, like it was nothing. Like everyone else. He didn't think her special, he just thought her stupid, like everyone else.

Danny's eyes went wide and she stared at him, then the ground for a moment, then back to him. She wasn't quite sure how to formulate her words, but then, she never really knew how to. "I'm ... I'm not stupid," she said, her voice shaking, "Well ... I-I might be, but," she tried to gather her courage, but her voice cracked anyways, "You never ... I thought it might not be true."

Her left arm went to cradle her right, and she seemed to almost sink into herself. It was true, too. The entire time she was at Amityville, Rikki was the only one who never called her stupid. Never gave her that look. Even Roch told her she was stupid sometimes, but not Rikki. Never Rikki. He was the fallback, the tiny hope that maybe she wasn't as hopeless as everyone seemed to tell her she was. The hope that told her maybe Oersted wasn't the better child, maybe she could do something too.

Whatever thin little thread had been holding them together just snapped. She sucked up her fragile exterior and firmly said, "Sorry for bothering you," as she attempted to push past him and run. Why hadn't she just run in the first place? None of this would've happened.
