Some things you just have to learn through personal experience.
That was something Azhar already knew but it didn't stop him from enduring an unfortunate reminder. For no particular reason, the first time the dark lion encountered a live porcupine was during his banu quest, just after reaching adulthood. He’d seen a tiny dead one once but that was hardly comparable to the sight of the real thing, especially one as big as the creature he had seen – and felt - a few days before.
Don’t touch the porcupine.
The warning he’d heard as a cub had still sounded clear in his ears and yet… somehow…
Azhar looked down at his paw. It was swollen and red between two of his toes, the spot where one of the blasted creature’s spikes had pierced the skin from one side to the other. It could’ve been worse, he knew, but that didn’t stop him from grumbling angrily as he felt the ache of his injured paw (and pride). Through much licking, washing and biting, Azhar had managed to remove every bit of the spike – quill, he remembered the darn thing was called – but now his paw hurt more than ever. He should’ve known known better… actually, he did know better. So why had it still happened…?

Wandering was what Asha had taken to doing lately. Day after day she just wandered as the desire struck. No particular destination in mind, no person she had to see. The world was her back yard and Asha was going to see it all... and maybe one day she would find a cure for the cough that occasionally racked her body.
Asha took a deep breath as she gazed into the clear blue sky. For the first time in a long while the cough was leaving her be. She was able to hunt, to play, to run, to be free without feeling as if her lungs wanted to exit her body in the most painful way possible. And for that she was giving thanks. For the purplish blue lioness knew that you had to live each day as if it was your last because in her case it might just very well be her last.
Asha was about to continue on her way when she spotted a dark lion, limping?, in the distance. Uncertain of a possible reception the lioness cautiously approached. "Hello?" Her voice carried over the distance that she kept between them. She was a sweet lioness but not stupid.

Azhar’s head rose slowly as he searched for the source of the sound and his eyes blinked twice when he spotted the dark lioness. He eyed her for a few moments as he attempt to gauge her intentions, all the while pondering on whether her coat was purplish blue or bluish purple. He finally settled on the former.
The young lion was still uncertain as to what he was supposed to look for in a banu but the first few weeks in the rogue had been quick to teach him that females didn’t really care that much about what he wanted as much as what they were looking for in a male (and some weren’t even interested in settling down at all!). As such, as he turned to face the lioness and took a few steps in her direction, Azhar had absolutely no hope of convincing her to go back to the Ukuucha’Wafalme lands. After all, she was quite pretty and he wasn’t exactly able to give a good first impression today which was something he assumed to be crucial to his success.
“Hello.” He returned the greeting with a hint of a smile that he tried to force into his expression. His voice was soft and pleasant with a hint of concern. “Is everything all right?” in retrospect, considering that Azhar was the one limping, that was actually a pretty silly question but in his defense, Azhar wasn’t exactly used to being approached by females as much as following after them in hopes of finding his first banu. And he had tried, especially lately because even though it had taken a while, the dark lion was finally starting to feel a little homesick.

Gold eyes. He has gold eyes. Asha thought as the lion turned towards her. it took her a moment to realise that he had spoken in a voice that, to her, was laced with concern. "All right?" Did he just ask if I was alright?
"I'm... I'm fine." Her answer was filled with surprise. "I was actually going to ask you the same thing." She nodded to the paw that he was limping to protect. "I, well, I was just passing and saw you..." Asha glanced down and away as her sentence trailed off. He probably wouldn't appreciate having his injury pointed out, she thought. So far in her life she was the one that was looked after, the one coddled and wrapped in fur to protect her from life's harshness. Normally the males she had passed in her travels were polite and kind, with the rare 'me male, you female' personality but none that she had met liked having a personal hinderance such as a injury pointed out.

Azhar looked down at his own paw and finally realized why the lioness had approached him. He felt a little silly which was something he’d rather not admit aloud.
“Ah, I’m fine…too.” He said somewhat awkwardly. “Porcupine.” And because he feared the lioness might write him off as a complete idiot, Azhar felt the need to elaborate on his previous answer. “I saw one a couple of days ago and got a little too close… I tried to touch it. I got one of its spikes stuck on my paw and I made it worse when I pulled it out.” Alright, perhaps he wasn’t exactly improving on her first impression of him. The dark lion sat down trying to look a little more dignified as he lifted his injure paw.
“It stings a bit but it should heal soon enough.” He paused as his eyes met the red gaze of the dark lioness. “You’re really nice. Most lions I’ve met either avoid strangers or get really agressive if you cross their territories. My name is Azhar’hilel, by the way. I come from the Ukuucha’Wafalme pride. It's a pleasure to meet you.” Being polite might improve her opinion of him, he hoped in silence. ((Sorry for the slow reply. My pc had to be repaired but it's fine now. <3))

Fiction1119 ((I must say that this way of tagging is novel and quite amusing. I'm glad your computer is fixed by the way heart )) Asha remained quite and polite as the dark lion explained his problem, not that he really admitted to it being a problem. When he said that it would heal soon enough Asha silently debated that fact. It was quite possible that by walking on the open wound the lion had gotten dirt into it, which could mean that it was infected. Before she was able to state that fact though the lion introduced himself. "Its nice to meet you Azhar'hilel. I'm Asha and I don't come from a pride. Since I don't have a pride nor really a home territories there is no point in me being aggressive but I do find that I really must ask to see your paw." She smiled softly and added, "My mother taught me something of herb craft and I have a feeling that it might come in handy with your paw." Asha didn't elaborate as to why she knew healing nor really why she was willing to help another. Others over the years had helped her and it only seemed fair for her to help when she could.

“My paw…?” Azhar asked somewhat hesitantly, nodding a few times as the dark lioness further explained herself. He inspected the small wound again before finally offering it to Asha. He was a little surprised – though pleasantly so – by her attitude and, even though he still didn’t think a female would show any interested in a wounded male, for the first time since he’d entered the rogue lands, Azhar was fairly certain of what kind of banu to look for.
“Thank you. You really are very kind. You remind me of my mother, in a way. She’s also very warm and helpful.” Despite his words, Azhar poke with little emotion in his voice and with a strange bluntness similar to that of someone who was calmly describing the weather. “You couldn’t look more different than her though. She’s as white as the clouds on a sunny day.” And he chuckled, the thought amusing him unexpectedly.
((I usually quote people if I've missed a tag for a few days. I get notices from every thread I start though. Asha gently took Azhar's paw and examined it. As she looked at it she mentally asked and answered her own questions. Infected? Possibly but only minor at this point. Clean? For the most part. Swollen? Most defiantly. Tender to the touch? Likely. Once her examination was done she started to think of way's to heal the paw. Most ways were not available to her right then, due to location, but a quick glance around showed her that it could be done.
She tuned back into what the lion was saying. "Thanks? I think." Why mention your mom with so little emotion? Not entirely sure what to say to those odd statements Asha decided to change the subject. "So I am guessing that you pulled the quill out, cleaned it, then continued on your way. Normally thats fine but at some point you either irritated it or it has become slightly infected. Either could be true but the solution to both is the same so its not that difficult to fix. Just a bit time consuming." Again Asha looked around the grass lands. "Do you know if there is a water source near by? With shade would be preferable." Azhar was right in pointing out her darker coat, some times in the middle of the day the heat seemed to beat down on her darker coat. She could only imagine what the darker lion was feeling.
((yeah my posts do that to, i just wish there was some way to get notices for threads we didn't set up >.> oh dear well i hope your computer will be fixed right this time ^^ and tell your sister i said hi and thank you for letting you, mo, for using her computer))

As soon as she took his paw, Azhar felt a shiver run down his spine. He suddenly realized that this was the first time he was touching a female from outside his family and the dark lion couldnt help but to feel terribly self-conscious. He had, of course, grazed a female cub or two when he was much younger (he wasn't really counting those moments) but it had always been with the appropriate amount of respect and use of titles, following the strict rules of his pride. To touch a girl who did not belong to him felt immensely foreign to young lion… you just didn’t – couldn’t, shouldn’t – do that. He looked away and this time it was clear that there was emotion hiding beneath the surface, embarrassment being the most obvious one.
“I… was a little rough with it so I think I made it worse... I know a good place, banu Asha.” He said very quickly, pointedly looking in just about every direction except hers. “There’s a small waterhole that way.” He lifted his head and for a moment, his fiery gaze met Asha’s. He realized he was suddenly nervous though he couldn’t understand why that was.

Asha glanced back at him just in time to read the embarrassment written in his gestures and face. Now I wonder what caused that. Since she believed it would be rude to ask she pretended that she hadn't seen or cared about his embarrassment. After all it could very well have been caused from a stray thought that had crossed his mind and it was none of her business.
"Well it was in a pretty difficult place to pull it out." She smiled softly trying to make him feel a bit better about his predicament. Her smile got brighter when he said he knew of a good place with water but the smile faded a bit with confusion. She couldn't help but ask, "Banu? Is that a honorary title like healer or guard from where your from? I don't think I have ever heard that term before." In her travels Asha had encountered many who had titles but that was a new one for her.
"Great...." Her voice faded away when her eyes met Azhar's. This time it was her who looked away. Why? Why do I suddenly want to giggle nervously? Asha cleared her throat quickly and picked back up her sentence that she lost when looking in his golden eyes. "So... we should probably head that way." She got to her feet a bit awkwardly and glanced at him again.

Azhar gulped quietly when his eyes met hers and while the rational side of him – which was usually strongest – insisted on analyzing his own reactions in order to understand why his mouth was dry or why his heart seemed t beat faster, the quieter emotional side suddenly brought forth a vision of Asha sitting at the mouth of his den in the Ukuucha’Wafalme, waiting for him to return from a long day guarding the borders. It was such a strong experience that Azhar had to take a deep breath as understanding slowly crept into his mind. He almost missed her question but somehow managed regain his composure.
“Banu is… what we call females in my pride. It’s a rank or title… Like Lady. Lady Asha.” He bowed his head a little with a little abashed smile and paused, feeling an inkling of hope swelling in his chest as he started walking towards the waterhole. “I will return to my pride, the Ukuucha’Wafalme, eventually. Would you like to hear more about it?”

Asha couldn't help but smuther the laugh that bubbled up, it came out as a strangled gasp. "Lady? Me? I am no lady, I'm just a simple herbalist." Her voice rang with laughter but it was bright and clear. No malice was intended and it was clear.
She followed him and nodded. "It would give us something to talk about. I figure that if it is just irritation a quick cleaning, the right plants, and a rest should at least make things better. But I hope you don't really have anywhere to go today or even tomorrow since the longer you can stay off the paw the better." Asha's body language and smile clearly apologized for the inconvenience of the delay of his plans. "Sorry about that. Although if you are in a hurry then you know you can walk on it you will just have to keep an eye on it."

Azhar was silent for a moment as he attempted to decipher the dark girl’s words, wondering if she was offering to stay with him until he had healed or if she was going to leave as soon as she had treated his paw. Probably the latter but the young lion’s hopes grew every time he looked into the lioness’ bright red eyes. He remembered that one of the sons of the late Tsubame was also an herbalist of sorts though Azhar didn’t know enough about him to add him to the conversation – and talking about another male right now seemed like a terrible idea as well.
“I have all the time in the world.” Which wasn’t exactly true but it was what he was feeling at that moment. His voice was soft and a small smile slowly formed as he kept walking towards the waterhole. - FIN -
