The lone female worked her way back up the river. She had seen her sister a mere two days ago and the visit still wore on her. Certainly, she knew that Coyote would not change overnight, and it was not as though her sister ever really tried her cruel tricks on her. The wily femme knew better than that. Hawk knew her far too well for it to work, anyway.
Regardless, it made her sad, knowing that her sister would prefer cruelty to kindness and laughing at others to laughing with them. So, it was with a sense of wistful melancholy that she caught the scent of a stranger nearby. Who was it? Did she care to find out? Well, it would surely be better than dwelling on something that she could not do anything about. With that, she altered her course, hoping for a pleasant distraction.

The river had always made a pleasant place to relax for the male as his pale blue eyes watched the waters trickle softly over the pebbles just inches from his perch atop a larg boulder that jutted ever so slightly over the rivers edge. It was here the lone male, Smokey River, made his home, a cozy quite den not too far off which provided him with adequate shelter, security, and privacy. But he did enjoy the occasional wander through the forest every now and then. And today it seem's he would be treated to company.
His nose lifted to the sky, just catching the scent of a she wolf near by. A soft smile tugged at the corner of his maw as he stood and shook the laziness from his bones. It wasn't often he was treated with guests being a loner as he was, though he was gentle and kind he also knew to be cautious, so he intended to make this visit pleasant. Perhaps make a new companion in the process, or learn something new. He always had an ear out for rumors. More often than not, rumors contained a fair bit of useful knowledge in themselves.

Hawk did not immediately see the male, though the strength of the scent indicated that he must be here. However, when she did finally notice him around a boulder, she paused, a paw poised to take the next step. Well. She had not expected her diversion to be quite so attractive. It was a rare male who caught her attention. Still, that was no reason not to be polite. At least, as polite as she could manage with her less than expert social skills.
"Ah..." she said, at a loss. "I hope I am not intruding."

Ah so she had arrived. A beautiful she wolf, though he thought all were, she seemed in particular, one of the more eye catching. The ink on her leg was quite splendid and sparked a great deal of curiosity, but first, he must remember his manners. With a soft chuckle and a warm smile, he shook his head. "Heavens no. I was simply enjoying the sounds of the river, which on occasion, are best enjoyed with another." he said, his tone smooth and kind, and ever so slightly on the deeper end of pitch. "If you so desire, your welcome to stay. It's not often I get visitors....and well...." he paused and let out another warm hearted chuckle. "I feel a bit like chatting today." he said honestly. He wasn't the kind to talk your ears off, but there were periods when he did long for social interactions. He also wanted to inquire about her ink. But should she deny him, he would wish her well on her journey all the same.

"Oh," she said, then admonished herself. Manners. Speak, girl! Don't just stand there like a pup seeing the moon for the first time.
"I have nothing else to do," she added, then immediately regretted it.
For the most part, Hawk was happy with herself. She was content with her place in the world and her purpose with her fellow wolves. However, she did envy her sister one thing: her way with words. Somehow, it was always difficult for things to make it from her mind through her maw in a smooth, coherent manner. Instead, Hawk often ended up putting her paw in her mouth. Like just now.
She sighed.
"I mean, I would like that." At least she could try to fix it afterwards...sometimes.

Smokey couldn't help but chuckle. He guessed she might not have had much run in with others? Or she wasn't a big talker. She seemed sweet however, and he knew he would enjoy her company regardless. "Forgive me, I have yet to introduce myself." he said, stepping off the boulder he had previously been standing on, and padded up a few feet in front of her. With a low sweeping bow of his head, he spoke. "I am called Smokey River." he said and gave a polite nod before returning his head and neck to an upright position. "Most shorten it to Smokey... or River, if you prefer." he smiled as he cast his muzzle over his shoulder in a pointing like gesture. "Please, make yourself at ease."

Her tail lowered a little at the chuckle, however good-natured it may have been. Yes, she really was socially inept. As a result, she could either come off as idiotic, or arrogant. Of course, that would not stop her from seeking out company.
"Fire Hawk," she replied, hoping that she she could speak like a normal wolf as they got to know each other. It happened...sometimes...when she got comfortable enough.
Until then, she made her way closer to the river, as the male had indicated, nodding her thanks.
"I like your name," she added, then wondered if she should give up on conversation altogether. I like your name? Really? It might be true, but that was hardly an appropriate or normal thing to say to a complete stranger.

Smokey dipped his head in gratitude, his smile still ever present. "Why thank you. Your name is quite lovely itself. Fire Hawk. Very suiting if you ask me." he grinned as he took a side step so as to make comfortable room between them. He got the feeling she had little idea of what to say, and so he thought of starting up a conversation. "So what brings you this way, my fine lady?" he tilted his head with a curious smile. He still wanted to inquire about her ink, but he didn't want to jump straight to something that might be more personal.

Hawk shifted in embarrassment as she received the compliment...quickly followed by another, however unintentional it may have been. He had good manners, that much was certain. That was a rare thing these days, especially in the place she had just been. It was also a relief, she had to admit, that River was taking the initiative to start the conversation, even if it was a topic she was trying not to think too hard about.
"What brings me anywhere: my paws," she retorted, then ducked her head. If not one thing, then another. Her tongue really was treacherous.
"I was visiting my sister."

Smokey couldn't help but let out a chuckle. He liked her quick retorts. "Thank the stars above for your paws then." he said with a soft wink and a short flick of his tail. When she mentioned she was visiting her sister, his smile light up. He was however unfortunate to be born an only pup, not that he resented his mother in any way, he just often wondered how it felt to grow up with a sibling. "A sister, how quaint! I should have loved to visit family if I had any left to visit." he pondered a small quiet moment, before looking back at the she wolf. "Did you have a grand time?" he tilted his head, hoping that wasn't too bold to ask.

Was that...? Surely not. Did he just flirt with her? Well. Having no idea what to do about such a thing, let alone how to react, or even how she wanted to react, Hawk decided to completely ignore it. Yes. Pretend she did not notice. Right, then.
Quaint? He thought having a sister was quaint? If he knew Coyote, he would never say such a thing. To go so far as suggesting that it could have been a grand time? Oh, no. He really did not know Coyote at all.
"It was...eventful," she said tactfully. "You do not have any family?" Was that too obvious? If she told him about her sister, he might run away screaming...or something to that effect.

The brute calmly shook his head. "I do not, not anymore. My parent's have both passed and I was their only pup." he said with a small nod. He wasn't born into a pack either so he didn't even have family friends really, not that he minded of course. Though some day, he did desire to start a family of his own.... perhaps join or even start his own pack before he made the deep sleep twenty feet underground. However, he turned his attention and focus back to the lady at hand....or at paw. "Eventful.... is your sister...quite the paw full?" he wondered, then chuckled again.

"My parents died, too," she said. It was a sad thing, to lose one's family. Especially when they were all you had. It was bad enough for Hawk, but at least she had her sister, difficult though Coyote may be.
Oh. There he was, asking about her again. Perhaps she had not been as obvious as she thought.
"Ah," how to answer that? A paw-full did not even begin to describe Coyote. "That is one way of putting it."
Perhaps she could try changing the subject again? She should never have brought it up in the first place. Still, she did not want to offend him.
"Your family is dead," she began oh-so tactfully. "Do you have a pack, then? A place to call home? OR do you wander?

Clearly she didn't want to talk about her sister. Must not be on good terms, so as per her subtle requests, he dropped the subject. With a shake of his head, he answered all her questions. "No I do not have a pack, nor do I wonder. I reside here, not to far from this stream, is a cave I make my den. It is not much but It leaves me feeling content, so I could not ask for more." he smiled as he gazed out over the trickling river. He could not help but be fascinated by the very thing he was named after.

It actually worked. Who knew? Perhaps she could learn how to be a proper conversationalist, after all. There may be hope yet.
So, he did not have a pack, but he did have a home.
"That sounds lovely," she said and meant it. What more could a wolf ask for than a safe, comfortable place to call home? Other than a family to share it with, of course.
She followed his gaze to the water. So, she had ended one topic of conversation, did that make it her turn to come up with something new?
"Does it not get lonely, living all by yourself here?"
