Being a demon, Xiu had been raised with certain ideas in mind. For the most part, they were things such as, "do not even dare to acquaint yourself anyone of a lower race". Needless to say, the baku had chosen to ignore this piece of advice, as well as the many others like it. However, if there was one thing that had stuck with her with her upbringing, it was her love for cooking, baking, and--in general--good food.

That was probably why she tended to cook all of her own meals. While eating out was all good and well, it got way too pricey, way too fast. Not to mention that, with the Amityville cafeteria food being the only other option...

While Xiu typically preferred simple dishes, she decided to treat herself today. After a quick trip to the grocery shop, she finally returned to Amityville with two large plastic bags in each hand, with each bag filled with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats.

...Yes, she got a little carried away.

One had to admit that it was somewhat impressive that a tiny ghoul could carry all of that by herself, but it seemed that the weight of all four bags had finally taken a toll on her. Grimacing, Xiu suddenly lowered all of the bags to the ground, sinking down beside them and shaking out her arms. Now that she had actually gotten back...how was she supposed to bring all of this to the demon dorms and up to her room? She supposed that she could take two trips, or in the worst case scenario, call someone to give her a hand.

Yin Cang was for once taking a leisurely stroll on the school grounds. Or so it seemed. With the knowledge that hunting was allowed on school grounds he was quietly searching for prime hunting locations for future references, just in case times got bad of course. Being eligible for free/reduced lunch didn't help that much in the long run.

He was mostly enjoying the day when he noticed a slight figure crouched next to several packages shaking out her arms. Drawing closer he was surprised to realize that he knew this ghoul. Or at least, knew who she was. With that knowledge he really could not just leave her alone while she was struggling.

"Miss Xiu-Ying," he called out in greeting as he neared. "Do you require assistance?" Without actually waiting for an answer he reached down and scooped up the bags, two in each abnormally large hand. It was one thing to be required to carry bags, and quite another to offer the service willingly he decided. "Where shall I take these?

Xiu had certainly not expected for anyone to suddenly show up to help, never mind someone who she was actually acquainted with. A friendly smile lit up her face as the boil approached, and she hastily got back onto her feet as she lifted a hand in greeting. "Yin Cang! It's good to see you again!" And he was still addressing her in a formal manner, she saw. Her smile became slightly wry at this, and she opened her mouth to correct him when he suddenly offered to help.

She had been considering the offer when he suddenly picked up all four bags. Alarmed, the baku immediately stepped in front of him, stretching her arms out towards him. "Ah--wait! I appreciate the help, but you don't have to carry everything! Please, let me take at least two of them from you." Four might have been a little much for someone her size, but she should be able to handle two, right?

She jerked her head in the direction of the demon dorms then. "I was heading back to my dorm with these, actually. I'm sorry for the trouble!"

Yin debated her request. It was true that he was no longer required to carry bags, but the ghoul was tiny, and fairly nice, and actually bothered to call him by his real name. In fact, she was probably the only one who remembered it. And they were not too heavy, not for him. But she seemed distressed and she was reaching out toward him.

So he compromised her compromise. Trying not to touch her he put one for the bags from his left hand into her right, and then, carrying remaining three, turned toward the direction that she had indicated. "It would not be troublesome just to carry these to the demon dorms," he informed her as he began walking. "May I be so bold as to ask what you have bought?" The question was half curiosity, half trying to ensure that she talked about a rather safe subject.

"Ah." The ghoul stared down at the single bag that he placed in his hand before she turned her reddish-pink gaze back up to him, her brows creased. She opened her mouth--probably to protest further--but after a moment of thought, she gave a little shake of her head and simply smiled. "I'm very grateful for your help."

She started down the path to the demon dorms, moving ahead of Yin and turning around and walking backwards so that she could face him while they spoke. "Oh, yes! I just bought some food, is all. Or, well..." She peered down at the bag that was dangling from her hand, "I bought some ingredients for my next meal. Fresh vegetables, fruits, meat..." She had gone for the pricier stuff this time, though. It didn't hurt to treat herself once in a while, right?

...Though she might have gotten a little carried away. Jack knows that she wouldn't be able to finish all of this by herself.

She thanked me. She thanked me. He had handed her back a bag and she was thanking him. Thanks were not completely unheard of from females to males, but they were rare. After all, who thanked the broom for sweeping? He went from doing the favor to be nice to actually enjoying it, feeling somewhat welcome. Xiu-Ying was a fairly nice ghoul, and while he'd be in the next building if she attempted to make a move on him, she seemed to be fairly safe.

At the mention of food he began to pay closer attention. She cooked? But then she began to mention vegetables. It was hard to keep the grimace of distaste off of his face, the memory of the carrot he had been forced to eat surfacing. Fruits were barely better, but still nothing to like. Meat? Meat was good. But if it was the last thing that she had mentioned it may have been an after thought.

"You cook for yourself?" He asked, somewhat curious that she would do such a mundane task for herself. But perhaps she cooked as an art form, there were some that were quite passionate about cooking. "Is cooking a hobby of yours?"

The questions actually surprised her a bit, and she looked up at him with a wide-eyed, puzzled gaze. "Is that unusual?" In some demon families, she supposed that it would be seen as strange--why cook for yourself when you could get a servant to do it for you? With a smile and a little wag of her tail, Xiu gave an enthusiastic nod of her head. "For me, it's a hobby, yes! I love to cook and bake--it's a lot of fun, and it's always nice to sit down to a home cooked meal."

Though while they were on the topic of food, the grimace that had crossed the boil's face at the mention of vegetables had not gone unnoticed by the baku. Slowing down, she waited until Yin caught up with her before she turned around and walked alongside him. "If I may ask...does your kind not eat vegetables?" She had a couple of friends who couldn't (or simply didn't like) eating some things, but she had never met anyone who could possibly only be considered a carnivore. It was an interesting thought: all the dishes she had cooked up to now had been for those who ate both vegetables and meat. Would she be able to pull off a meat-only meal?

...It would be a good challenge. "What kinds of things do you usually enjoy eating?" She piped up suddenly, her expression thoughtful.

He nodded as she talked. Females often had hobbies, things that they did not need to do but enjoyed. He had been one of the lucky males that was training to do what he loved, but hobbies were almost a silly idea for a boil. At least Miss Xiu-Ying had a useful hobby.

"Vegetables do not really agree with my kind," was his answer. It was true, while technically he could eat a vegetable, if he ate a significant quantity it was a very real possibility that he would be somewhat ill for a time. "I believe some plants are used for seasoning, but any large pieces are removed prior to serving." He gave her an apologetic look. "I fear that I have little knowledge of the art of cooking. However, I can hunt, so if nothing else I can generally find my own food. Lately most of my nutrition has come from the rats that permeate the Monster Dorms."

Rats.

In reality, Xiu should not have been that surprised by this proclamation. She was well aware of the fact that the different races here all had different diets, but...the rats from the monster dorms? Just like the face Yin had made at the mention of vegetables, Xiu was unable to hide the small grimace that spread over her features. "I, er...do you just eat them like that?" As in, raw? Or were they at least cooked and seasoned? The latter she could (probably) deal with. The former...well.

And there was, of course, the fact that Yin had just admitted that his main source of nutrition lately was just from those little rodents. That overly motherly and nagging part of Xiu was not pleased.

Once they reached the demon dorms, the baku stopped, turning to look at up at the boil. "Thank you again for carrying the bags for me--it was very kind of you!" He had done her a favour, so in her mind, it seemed only logical for her to offer something in return as a thank you. But what--oh, of course! Her pink eyes lit up slightly as she lifted the bag in her hand. "Have you, er, hunted yet? If not, would you like to join me for lunch? I bought far too much food, and I do love cooking for friends."

Everyone seemed to think that rats were a bad food source for some reason. Well, everyone but Alexander, who had also bitten a chunk out of the giant JOYful rat. "I have found some problems in finding a way to cook them," he admitted. "I do not prefer to eat them raw, but in the case of an emergency raw is acceptable." There was no way to cook them in his room, and very few options left to him, considering that he did not own any cooking utensils. If you skinned and ate them quickly enough they were still warm at least.

By that point they had reached the familiar doors to the demon dorms. He was fully prepared to take the bags as far as she needed him to, so he was slightly surprised when she halted. "You are welcome," he responded. But then she went on to offer him an invitation.

He tried not to panic at the offer. Carrying something to her room was not a big deal. Being in her room was quite another. He had presumed she was safe, but what if she was not? She seemed so small and nice but he should know better than anyone not to underestimate a ghoul. Some of the most docile ones in appearance could be the hardest to please.

He probably would have shoved the bags at her right and fled right then and there if she had not added that magical word. Friend. Here was another female trying to befriend him. Something must be different about demon ghouls, he mused as he tried to think of a polite way to refuse. "Surely the ingredients needed are worth far more than what you should give to the likes of me Miss Xiu-Ying. I will gladly take the bags to where you cook, but there is truly no need to repay me."

...Raw, was it? In the back of her mind, Xiu wondered if she had any extra frying pans that she could lend out--or give--to Yin. Though maybe that wasn't the issue? "Do you not have a stove or a kitchen?" The demon dorms, she knew, tended to be a little fancier than the other dorms, so she had had enough room to install a small kitchen. It hadn't occurred to her until now that maybe Yin's room lacked a place where he could cook.

She noticed the hesitation the boil showed at her offer, though she wasn't entirely sure why he seemed so uncertain. Perhaps he simply wasn't comfortable eating with someone who he hadn't known for long, or was concerned that it would be too bothersome? She opened her mouth to assure him she would enjoy the company, but his next words caught her off guard.

The...likes of him? And there was that "miss" again. He really was an awfully formal boil, she had noticed, and the way he referred to himself just now was strange--in fact, it clearly didn't sit comfortably with the baku. Frowning, she cocked her head to the side. "Yin Cang, we're equals, aren't we? Demon or monster, we still stand on even ground." There was a short pause, and then she suddenly smiled. "Though in that case, if you insist on calling me 'Miss Xiu-Ying', I suppose that means I should call you 'Mr. Yin Cang'."

That had a nice ring to it, didn't it? Despite herself, the ghoul couldn't help but grin.

The weremantis knew that other dorms were larger than his own single room, having seen both Miss Danny and one reaper boil's room, but the idea that he could have a kitchen was slightly amusing. "There is no place for a fire in my room, though I do have a sink," he explained.

Though he had been trying to remind himself that ghouls were not the same outside of the Clan, having one tell him that he was her equal caused him to stumble, barely managing to salvage himself before he fell. Head reeling he barely managed to hear the next thing that she said. Demon or monster? Did that mean...the factions were not on equal ground?

This was the first that he had ever heard of such. Of course he had known about other species and the five factions growing up, the Clan traded at the borders, and so they were taught about other, inferior clans and races growing up. But the way that she said it...were demons higher by right than monsters? Where were monsters ranked at? Was he lower than Alexander in social rank, was it out of pity that the boil bothered to talk to him? Was he naturally inferior to Mitzi and the reaper boil because of his faction? Probably. The reaper and demon dorms looked much nicer than the monster ones.

He was spiraling into a state of devastation when the ghoul spoke up again. "Miss Xiu-Ying, there is no reason for you to speak so highly of me." His cheeks burned, and his stomach twisted. If she was willing to speak so highly to him what might be her next step? He realized he had no idea if she had chosen a boil or not. This whole idea of helping her out was stupid. What on earth was he doing? Desperate to get the attention off of himself he tried to turn the tables a bit. "Is being a demon very different than being a monster?"

How big was Yin's room, she wondered? Feeling that it may have been impolite to ask, Xiu pushed the question from her mind, but she couldn't help but frown a little. Surely he couldn't go on eating raw rats all the time? "What about the cafeteria food?" Okay, the food in the cafeteria wasn't that great, but it was a nice alternative to rats, right? Or, well, she couldn't say that--maybe Yin or his kind simply liked eating rats, but he had admitted that he didn't like them raw.

Maybe she was thinking about this too hard.

The corners of her lips quirked upwards in a small smile at his words. "Yin Cang, I'm not speaking highly of you--I'm simply speaking to you as an equal, because that's how the students are around here." Most of them, at least. It would have been naive to say that none of the students held any prejudice against the other races, but the circle of friends she had made were all very open-minded. "And...personally, no, I wouldn't say that being a demon and being a monster are all that different. Sometimes I'm mistaken for a monster as well." Xiu gave a little shrug of her shoulders--it didn't bother her. Admittedly, bakus were rather strange creatures, but it just so happened that she was somehow a demon.

Sensing that they had gotten a little off topic, Xiu took the first few steps up the stairs to the demon dorm's entrance. "It would really be no trouble at all if you'd like to eat lunch with me, but please, do not feel pressured! If you aren't comfortable with it, then it's fine."

"I eat in the cafeteria almost daily," he assured her. "The school has provided me with a voucher for one basic meal a day." It was really rather generous of them, and rather crucial to his survival as well. With a grand total of one pumpkin seed to his name (he had found it on the ground), he really was not in any condition to purchase anything.

He was once again put at ease as she dropped the "Mr." from his name, and he tried to listen to her attentively. So maybe it was not that big of a deal. He relaxed a bit, concern still there but no longer on the forefront of his mind as he followed her up the stairs.

A couple of steps up he realized what was coming next, and all but scrambled to reach the top first so he could get the door for her, holding it open when the hand that was carrying only one bag. "You are most kind Miss Xiu-Ying," he said with a slight dip of his head. Now she was finally voicing how she truly felt, giving him a polite way to refuse her offer.

And for some reason he found himself blurting out, "if you do not mind I may join you for lunch. I am curious to see what type of dishes you prepare." It took him a moment to realize what he had just said, and even longer for him to try to work out why he had said it. One thing stuck out at him. He was just being contrary.

Xiu could breath a sigh of relief to hear that Yin was, at the very least, not going without any food at all. Still, only one meal a day? The baku made a mental note to amend this...somehow. It wouldn't be hard to teach him some recipes, but the issue of not having anywhere to cook...

...Hopefully there would be some way around that. The Home Ick room, perhaps?

Her eyes widened slightly as Yin hurried ahead of her, grabbing the door and holding it open for her. There was a moment of pause, and then she smiled. "Thank you, Yin Cang. You are very kind as well!" Or maybe gentlemanly was the right word? Deciding that she couldn't have him hold the door open for her forever, the baku hurried through the door, and then turned to wait for him.

"I'd be happy to cook for you! And honestly, you'd be doing me a big favour since I can't finish all of this myself." Looking sheepish, she gestured towards the bag in her hand. Ingredients were best used fresh, after all.

She head towards another flight of stairs then--Jack, she hoped that those bags weren't too heavy for Yin--and made her way to her room. "I hope you don't mind minipets too much? I have three--you met two of them previously--but they won't approach if you don't want them to." After a bit of struggling, she finally got the door open. Switching on the lights, she moved into the small kitchen area directly to the left of the door, dumping the bag that she held on the counter top. "Phew! Please, make yourself at home!"
