It's awful that this has happened, though I have to say, jumping from revoked marriage rights to stripping voting rights of Middle Eastern women (or executing gay Ugandan refugees) is sort of silly, for lack of a better word. In all likelihood, pro same-sex marriage groups are going to make their voice heard, Canada is going to hear the disapproval, and eventually will allow these marriages, if not restoring previously married couples' statuses. Since Canada was at least progressive enough to allow the marriages in the first place, I don't see how they could backtrack for too long.

Yes, Canada is totally going to start executing people. neutral As I write this, no marriages have been dissolved, and it's not likely that they will be. A lawyer that works for the federal government is making the claim that some non-residents can't be granted a divorce because, in his opinion, they aren't legally married. It may be true that they can't grant a divorce (or can't do so easily), but they can't dissolve the marriages, either. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/justice-minister-vows-to-clarify-laws-on-same-sex-marriages/article2300179/ http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2012/01/12/pol-harper-same-sex-marriage.html I'm well aware of the Conservative Party's stance on same-sex marriage. I have no doubt that the lawyer in question probably has the support of most of the party, which is truly sad at this point in history. However, that still doesn't mean that these marriages will be dissolved. The PC has had a majority government for some time now, and they actually voted not to re-open the same-sex marriage issue. I'm really surprised that you, of all people, would jump the gun and not check your facts before posting this.

Taeryyn, I am a little disappointed in myself. I let the stress in my life get the better of me and the link I was given was the straw that broke the camels back this week.
Mea culpa.

No worries. Here's hoping it never becomes a reality.
Someone sent me the same link on Facebook, and I freaked at first, too. Like I said, our current government is not exactly supportive of same-sex marriage, so I was pretty worried at first.
I'm kind of annoyed at whoever wrote the article on Unicorn Booty. They've twisted the truth around something that's caused a lot of worry. On the plus side, at least, it's gotten a lot of media attention, so if the Tories were planning on doing something sneaky, they're out of luck now. They've been furiously scrambling to do damage control, and it's great. xD

I have a friend in Canada who was really freaked out about it- it offended her sense of national identity.

Shadow Ra Warrior o Canada, ya ******** up; marriages is not about the show; it's just basic rights dumbasses scream Canada has ******** up a great number of things, but if you'd read further than the first post, you'd know the Canadian government hasn't actually dissolved the marriages in question. If you're going to call the government or citizens of an entire nation "dumbasses", you might first want to know what the hell you're talking about.

So... Im a dumbass cause im canadian? Thank you soooo much for labeling me and grouping me with my shitty government. Of course its MY fault that MY government said something so stupid like that... And undoubtedly its MY fault that most of the same sex couples I know feel threatened because im of course CANADIAN.
Why don't you go and blame global warming on me too? Might as well right? Us Canadian's are nothing but a bunch of DUMBASSES to you anyways.
Thank you for ignoring our free health care and OHIP programs, all the adopt a children organizations and funds, and all the MILLIONS we put into cancer research... It's good to know that people can judge good people so easily whenever something offensive comes up.
Oh yeah... YOUR WELCOME for all the help we gave you in the world wars that wern't ours to fight... We just LOVE making people feel threatened~

Can we not turn this into a Canadian patriotism thing? I'm obviously as irritated as anyone about how one lawyer (and a misleading "news" article) can make the whole country look bad, but could we at least keep to the topic at hand?

I agree with Taeryyn. owo We've established that nothing actually happened, so lets all chill here. There's no reason to get all uppity, and to start pointing fingers at one country or the other.

Im not trying to point fingers truly. Im just very offended and hurt that someone can just judge some one or a country without all the facts. I've recived several hate letters already just because im 'a homophobic souless' canadian.
I'm just tired of being labeled a 'Canadian' when something bad happens...
I am sorry if im offending anyone... Topic dropped, my anger levels have dropped, i'm just going to let this go and live on... Think what you want, I really don't want to start a fight...

BogiePop good for Canada i say, if your not going to live there and pay there taxes why should they deal with your marriages? Probably because they took their money to do it? And it did a lot for Canadian-Pink tourism. cat_3nodding
