Wash was on the Training Grounds, but he wasn't sure why.

It wasn't that the young man didn't appreciate the value of practice and persistence - especially after the rather tumultuous events of late. Their job was as dangerous as it was bizarre. It wasn't even that he was still tired from spending several weeks listless, ill, and - if he was really honest with himself - depressed. No, if he had to be honest about it, it was more of a personal problem.

That personal problem was currently strapped to his arm, and still in a relatively frumpy mood.

After all, how did one PRACTICE with a shield? He swung his arm through the air a few times. The weight was still uncomfortable, but Sally felt somehow lighter than usual. Growing braver, he made a wide chopping motion - and ended up spun 'round by his own momentum, his scarf wrapping around his face and obscuring his vision.

He could hear a snide chuckle echoing in his head as he spat out bits of lint and clawed at the offending accessory. Don't let anyone see me like this, he pleaded mentally. At least he hoped the incident would make his partner more forgiving - he didn't know if he could endure another scathing comment without tossing her off the beach.

You wouldn't dare.

As he tried to get untangled he contented himself with imaging her sailing like a frisbee out into the sea and being picked out of the air by a leaping shark, or something equally toothy and or dangerous.

Sadly for Wash, someone did see him. At least the end when his scarf was wrapped around him. All Marcus thought was that that must suck and Wash might invest in wrapping his scarf, just not on his face. Still, the fellow moon trainee gave the other props for trying at least. Dis had been bothering him to go out and train again now that his mind wasn't 'filled with thoughts of presents and jack's crap'. At first, Marcus had ignored the weapon, but after hitting the gym and realizing he was having a small bit of trouble lifting his old weights fro before the whole JOY debacle, Marcus was done putting s**t off.

He wanted to get back in shape, and the gym he knew wouldn't cut it, so training was on his schedule. Just needed a sparring partner. Seeing Wash Marcus could hear Dis saying how they should pick on the semi-new guy. Teach him the ropes. Kick his a**. the usual. Marcus... was a bit inclined to that.
|Just a bit.

But that could wait, poor guy was trying to free himself and Marcus figured that hazing could wait, the guy was practically doing it to himself. "You okay there Wash?" Marcus Raised his brow. "How did that happen to you anyway?"

"Uuuuhhh," Wash began dumbly, startled by the presence of someone on the field.

As he wrenched the last bit of scarf free of his face, he grimaced. Marcus, of all people? He had to look like bumbling idiot...

"Momentum," he answered as vaguely as possible. "I uh. I'm not quite used to. Well, you know," he said with a hint of exasperation, gesturing with his shield arm for emphasis. "I don't think I got the, well. Hang of it."

Besides, he thought to himself, what was he to do with it, run around willy nilly bashing people? He thought wistfully of Marcus's own weapon. A sword. So straightforward. Couldn't go wrong with that.

Sally bristled. Her rancor was nearly audible. He supposed it wasn't entirely fair to blame her - he secretly was glad he had a shield, if only to hide behind. The thought was somewhat shameful but no less true.

"You, uh, come here often?" he added lamely.

You were a good guy Wash, if looking a bit clumsy. Not the worst thing he'd seen happening on the Island. Probably not the last odd thing either. Summoning Dis, he twirling the blade in a hand, smiling. Dis chuckled, commenting on how he was showing off like a true alpha male should.

Well. Never sword twirling again.

"When I started out with Dis, I had never held a sword in my life. They sort of help guide you along, teach you as you go really. Nothing formal. But just.. sort of let them help you, don't fight it? Sound weird but-" He stuck the sword into the ground and leaned on it. "Then again, our purpose is in some ways. Don't dwell to much on it really." If you did you got tangled up and could loose sight of your goals.
He's already tangled.
Good job Dis. Glad you are observant.

"and of course I come here often Imean-" A hand motion to the area. "Not many places to go here. Aside from that I'm kind of a workaholic. Need to keep myself busy." Pulling the blade from the ground he pointed it at Wash. "I can help you practice if you like."

Oh.

If Wash had thought he felt silly before, it was only compounded now. Listen to Sally? He supposed he'd really been doing that all along, as in the heat of battle his performance wasn't nearly as, well, poor, but having it laid out so plainly... He supposed there had to be a reason the damn things could talk, anyway.

As he listened, Wash had to admit he wasn't surprised at Marcus's admission. He didn't look like the type to run around with some sort of medival weaponry. That could be said of most of them, honestly. He had just assumed that the rest had spent the time that he was asleep, well, training. It dawned on him then how little he knew about his fellow 'team mates'. Marcus, a workaholic?

"I'd love the help," he admitted. He wasn't sure if he was ready to jump right back in though - embarassingly enough, he thought he might have pulled something in his wild flailing. "But I was wonderin', what did'ya do before you ended up, well, here?" His gesture included most of the facility, a sort of vague hand sweep.

He seemed to get it, which was more than some trainees right off could say. It was also nice to here that the guy wanted to help and wasn't going into bemoaning that there was work. Marcus could understand it but you got over quickly or- Well you jut made your own life miserable. His question was a bit out of the blue, or so it seemed to Marcus. Desummoning Dis, the sword turned back into the earring, clasping easily back into place.
"Well, before I came here I was... A pretty normal high school kick growing up in New York City. My older brother and mom worked to support me and my younger, and much stupider brother. I'd always been able to see the crazy s**t but when I was kid, learned to ignore it and not pay to much attention to it."

He shrugged. "I know some people here have horror stories, weird and crazy s**t, but mine is pretty mundane as far as pasts go. Right after I graduated I was offered a change to better the world. I thought it was a cult, but at the same time, they knew I could see what other didn't. I didn't have a life plan so I figured, why the hell not?" Laughed he motioned to the path that led down to the abandoned town. The current construction project, and Marcus's favorite duty.
"And you? What's your story?"
