The day was dreary. Clouds covered the sky in a blanket of whites and grays, promising snow in the near future. It wasn’t a surprise really, as it had already carpeted the forest floor with a foot of new powder the night previous. Luckily this kept the temperature fairly mild, with no hint of wind.

Marble was trudging through the new snowfall, expending a lot of effort to break a path in the wall of snow drifts. He was tracking, well, trying to track. Bunny tracks littered the area, but they were all on top of the snow, where Marble broke through. There would be no way for him to catch anything he flushed out, with speed not on his side today.

With a huff of irritation, Marble retreated to the base of a fir. Pushing through a pair of branches to the relatively dry, dark hollow created by the tree. The snow wasn’t nearly as high here. Marble circled once, twice, before lying down to catch his breath and plot out a strategy for catching breakfast.

Sand Breeze could not believe her luck at having found the already made path, the snow no longer a hindrance while following whomever it was who'd made the path in the snow. Well, maybe following them. She wasn't sure how old the tracks are, but she judged them to be fairly recent, seeing as it was the only disturbance in the snow and no smaller animals had run through. Plus there was a good chance whatever had made the path was hunting; rabbit tracks ran atop the snow.

She licked her chops as she thought of the opportunity to either win over or steal a meal. It wasn't long before she came to an area in which the path clearly moved into the undergrowth of a large fir. Hmm, could be dangerous. Her ears perked forward and she tested the air with her nose, very faintly catching the scent of another wold. She cleared her throat. "Anyone home?" She called out softly, her tone almost teasing. As if anyone would call such a place home! Besides maybe a bird... she chuckled at the thought.

Marble was feeling re-energized. His ten minute rest had included a brief sleep and now he was starting to feel confident once again; these rabbits would be no match for him. He rose and stretched his legs slowly, limbering up muscles that he would soon need, before heading back the way he had come. He was just pushing his nose through the branches when his ears perked forward, catching a strange noise.

"Anyone home?"

The question startled Marble into his first instinct. He thrust his head through the boughs, eyes wide, and peered around. He spotted the light brown she-wolf easily, and despite his usually suspicious attitude towards strangers, he couldn't help but reply to her question. "I'm here! Though I wouldn't call this my home."

He forced the rest of his body through the boughs so he was totally uncovered from his resting spot. His tawny birch fur contrasting the snowy white of their surroundings. On another day he probably would've let the female pass by unaware that he was nearby, but after his poor luck hunting earlier, he welcomed another set of teeth. It had also been a while since he'd met another wolf, so a little socialization was a welcome thought indeed.
