Jove was starting to get used to the train ride to his brother's house. But whether it was just anticipation for seeing little Baroque again, or truly an enjoyment of the ride, he was in good spirits the whole way. He was perhaps a bit too enthusiastic for a train patron, pressing his face against the glass to see outside, and actively sniffing the air whenever he caught the scent of a new passenger, his tail making a soft thump-thump noise against the seat as he wagged it.
And then finally they were there!
The pup almost dragged Ren up to the front door of the large building, stopping halfway to let his brother pass... And then he proceeded to push Ren from behind to make him go faster, making an exasperated whining noise. It felt like ages since he had last seen his adopted little sister, before the JOY invading Amityville, before the hunters came and took the horsemen away, even before the horrible field trip! Baroque could have grown up so much since then, would she remember him? He just had to see her, so she wouldn't forget him!

"Why, exactly, did I agree to this again?"
Ren was not exactly thrilled to be going back to his House - and yes, it was now spoken as though it was a capital letter. He refused point blank to refer to the house he grew up in as his home - not when Amityville was more of a home to him than anywhere else had ever been - so this place was now the House.
And it would remain that way as long as Ren decided it was.
He let Jove drag him up towards the House with a rather exasperated expression on his face. Clearly the puppy was excited to see Baroque - after all, Jove had only seen the little scareling once - and he had been the one to run into Ren's room with the intention of going back to make sure they were all okay. Jove's worrying over the recent events had spilled over to the point where he wanted to go back to the House and make sure nothing had happened to Baroque.
Really Ren could have cared less about the two people who he no longer regarded as his parents, but he was (strangely) considered about Medieval, and, of course, little Baroque.
"Okay, okay," said Ren, sighing. He twisted his head around, craning his neck to peer down at Jove, pushing him impatiently, and Ren's tail flipped out, catching one of the boil's wrists to drag it away from his back. "I'm going, I'm going."
He pushed open the door to the House without bothering to even knock.
It was eerily silent inside; Ren's footsteps echoed on the expansive, glossy marble floor that led to the double staircase.

The pup had no answer to that question. Maybe if he was aware of his natural little-brother charm, he would have grinned impishly, and perhaps used that cuteness to his advantage more often. If his pride would allow it!
Jove's fluffy tail curled upwards and wagged as he was finally let into the house, but the almost-dancing little prance in his step vanished quickly when the weight of the silence hit him. Sure it could have been a pleasant silence, like naptime, everyone peaceful and snoozing, but it was hard for anything to be entirely comfortable in that house.
The little wisp's ears fell backwards in discomfort, and after a second of wide-eyed observation he dashed up the stairs. He knew where Ren's room was, and was gonna go make sure Baroque was safe even if he had to knock over three evil gryphons in the process!
Jove slowed outside the door, ears perking to listen for any sounds inside. Then hesitantly he opened it and peered inside.

"Wait, Jove - " Ren started to call after him, but it was too late. Jove had already darted forward, run up the stairs, down the hall, and by the time Ren had caught up to him, was inching open the door to Ren's old room cautiously to see if Baroque was inside. Ren put a hand on the boil's shoulder, just in case, and poked his head into the room.
It was empty - at least of Lila, Loki, and Medieval. There was, however, a bassinet against one wall, a small mobile hung atop it with tiny paper birds swinging gaily around in a circle. And, sleeping in the bottom of the crib, a tiny pink blanket curled around her shoulders, was Baroque.
She was just fine. Ren breathed out a sigh that he hadn't realized he was holding.
"Look," he whispered, closing the door quietly behind him. "She's all right, Jove."
Ren crept over to the crib, his hands on the side as he looked down at the tiny, pale-skinned face of his little sister. She looked as small as ever - smooth and quiet, and Ren felt his heart soften instantly.
"What do you think?" he asked Jove, and looked back at his little brother. "Wanna hold her?"

Fluffy ears perked as he followed Ren to the side of the little tiny bed, and the moment he saw that little freckled face his tail wagged. Yeah, she was okay. Safe and sound and sleeping, without a hint of peppermint in the air. It was quite a relief for the pup, even though he knew she was probably as safe here as anywhere. Seeing her there made it real.
Jove put his hands on the edge of the crib as he peered in, tail wagging, and then he shared a quick glance with his brother. But he had another thought.
There was a soft ruffling sound as his clothes fell to the floor, and he hopped into the crib in his small natural form. They were almost the same size, the little scareling and the little pup, and with plenty of room in there for both of them, so for the time being, Jove was not interested in holding Baroque. Instead he padded around her once, and then curled up at her side with his head on her round little belly. Then Jove let out a comfortable sigh.

One of the things Ren had decided was one of his favorite things in life was watching Jove interact with Baroque. He knew the pup had been anxious and hesitant about things at first, thinking he would be replaced, but now it seemed he had taken to being a proper big brother.
Especially since the next second he had stripped (Ren had not even noticed he was doing it until after the fact) and shifted, leaping nimbly into the crib, a tiny little fluffy pup that was very nearly the same size as Baroque herself.
It was a rather adorable sight. Ren wished he had a camera.
"You're gonna be a good big brother," he said gently, and reached a hand down, absently brushing his fingers over the top of his little sister's hair.
The door opened. Ren's head snapped up, eyes flashing, but it was Medieval who stepped through the doorway, not his parents.
"Relax," she said, noting the tense look on his face. "They're not home right now."
She crossed the room and peered down into the crib, her brow furrowing.
"...what the Jack - ...?"

Jack yes, he was gonna be a good big brother. Jove was determined not to let anything bad happen to her, even if that meant literally dragging Ren out of bed every single Spiderday morning. Sometimes waking Ren up was a lot of work, but he would do it for his little sister!
At the sound of the door opening, Jove's eyes opened and he glanced up at Ren, sensing his mood suddenly on edge. And then when he heard the evil twin's voice, all the fur along his back began to bristle. The pup didn't make a move, but by the time he saw Medieval look in he was a fully fluffed up little caterpillar with a determined frown.
Finally, at her expression of confusion, he made a little grumbling noise. Not enough to be considered a growl, or loud enough to wake his baby sister, but it was definitely a displeased sound.

Ren's eyes flickered downwards to Jove, the puppy's fur bristling, his little brother clearly ready for a fight. Reaching down a hand, Ren tapped a finger on Jove's head, gently smoothing across his fur; a gesture to calm the boil before he leapt.
Medieval was looking clearly affronted.
"You know Mother will kill you if she finds him in that bed," she pointed out, a disgruntled expression on her face, but Ren just rolled his eyes.
"He's not contaminated, or anything," he said, mildly exasperated. "He's just playing the big brother part. He's decided to take Baroque as his little sister, which I thought was only fair, since he's my little brother."
Now his sister's expression bordered on disgusted.
"Just because," she said icily. "You've decided to adopt a stray doesn't mean - "
"Shut up," said Ren, in a bored tone, and he was about to say something else, but a soft, squawking noise drew his attention to the crib. Baroque was waking up, and she was now staring at the tiny puppy in her bed with a wide-eyed expression.
"Jove - " Ren started to say, but the next second Baroque had wiggled over to the puppy and proceeded to throw her tiny arms around him in a squashy sort of hug.

Jove's grumble ceased, but the fluff didn't immediately settle down. He was not a stray, and there was nothing wrong with him being there! He was just as much a person as she was, and a less evil one on top of that!
The pup let out a surprised wheeze as the little scareling flopped on him in an exaggerated, childish hug. He had forgotten how dense they were compared to foxfire wisps! Baroque clearly outweighed him, although she did sink a ways into the soft fluff. He made no further sounds as the pudgy infant fingers explored his fur, he was almost worried he had woken her with his warning noises except she seemed to have no fear of him.
Unlike the evil twin, who seemed to think he was infested with mange or something. Like he would EVER let himself harbour parasites...
Jove slowly shifted so he could look at Baroque's curious little face, he had never seen her awake before! She had such big eyes! The ghost sat very still for a minute, just letting himself be squashed and hugged, and then he gave her cheek a little lick. A little puppy kiss.

Sometimes dealing with Medieval was just way too stressful.
Or maybe is was always.
Baroque made a squealing sort of noise, burrowing her nose into the puppy's soft side with an eager sort of affection. Clearly she was pleased with the new arrival in her crib, and as Jove licked her cheek she gave a happy gurgle.
Ren was smiling, but one look at Medieval made him raise his brows. She was staring as though transfixed, her gaze wide-eyed and clearly confused, as though she could not quite figure out what was going on.
"See?" said Ren, but the word was almost gentle. "They like each other. Jove will be a good brother."
Medieval was silent for a moment, then opened her mouth - except she was interrupted by a door slamming somewhere below, the sound of footsteps already on the stairs, and then, quite suddenly, the door was pushed open again, only this time to reveal the two people Ren would rather not have seen.
Dead silence.
"Renaissance," said Lila finally. "What, ah...a surprise."

Jove's tail began to wag, slowly at first, but with more enthusiasm as he realized he wasn't scaring the little gryphon at all. She was friendly and brave, and freckled just like her biggest brother, and the ghost knew if Ren had ever been this size, this is what his hugs would have felt like too.
He gave her another little puppy kiss, and snuffled happily at her blonde baby-hair, a warm feeling rising in his little chest. This was his very own little sister! And he could be for her what Ren had been for him, a special person he couldn't live without.
But the pup paused, and his ears perked a half second before the sound of a door below.
His expression wilted, he knew who had just arrived, remembered their stares of disapproval. It was so much like Medieval, but worse. They were going to make him leave again, like a stray Ren had been feeding, but he wasn't a bad dog! And he wanted to spend some more time with Baroque...
He heard the door open, but he couldn't see above the edge of the crib. Jove heard that cold voice though, and snuggled deeper into the scareling's clumsy embrace.

It was quite clear that Baroque was very taken with her new "big brother." She curled herself around Jove, tiny wings flapping, her freckled face rubbing against his pale one, little ears pressed upwards.
Ren, meanwhile, was giving the two people that had just walked into the room an expression of the deepest loathing. He still had not forgotten his last conversation with them, nor had he forgotten just what they thought of Jove.
Lila's eyes swept across the room while Loki leaned against the door frame, unsmiling. He did not say a word; however, Lila's gaze widened at the sight of the little blue puppy in the crib with her new daughter, the color draining from her face.
"What the devil - " she started to say, but someone had already intervened - and it wasn't Ren.
Medieval stood in front of the crib, blocking Lila's path, her arms held loosely at her side.
"Just leave them, Mother," she said tiredly. "He's not bothering anyone. And Baroque likes him."
Everyone stared at her.

Glowing blue eyes stared back at the gryphons, but the pup looked anything but fierce with the scareling nuzzling him, fur askew from her attentions. He wasn't going to just hop out like he had done something wrong, if he was guilty of anything it was leaving his clothes in a mess on the floor, not sitting there with his sister. She certainly seemed to agree!
A displeased mumbling noise rose in his throat as Ren's mother spoke up, but it ceased when another voice cut her off. And then it was literally everyone, except maybe the scareling, who was staring at Medieval. Jove was as shocked as Ren that the evil twin would intercede on their behalf. But then again... Hadn't she agreed to give Baroque his present after his last visit? She might not have liked him, perhaps she thought him an unpleasant mutt like the elder gryphons, but...
His fluffy ears perked, and he pulled away from Baroque only long enough to look around the room. Were his glowing mushrooms there somewhere?

Ren's brain was not comprehending the situation.
And apparently neither were Lila and Loki's, since both of them were staring, completely nonplussed, at Medieval, standing there with her arms folded tiredly across her chest, leaning back against the side of the crib.
He remembered, way back when, a time when his sister had been different. Better. She had been the one to protect him (though he was still three and a half minutes older than she was). But she had not been the one to have suffered beneath the wrath of their father. Where Ren was treated as some sort of pathetic, unwanted outcast, consistently underneath his mother and father's thumb, Medieval had often been free to do what she wanted. She could have run away, if she'd had the mindset to do so.
But why, then, hadn't she? She had seen what Lila and Loki had done to their son. Rarely had Medieval been hit, though she'd been slapped several times by their mother on occasion - but never anything like what Ren had gone through. After he had dragged himself back into his room, bruised and bleeding, hardly able to move for fear of pain, Medieval had been the one to sneak quietly in, always carrying a damp cloth to press against his wounds, whispering words of encouragement into his ear. Other than his grandmother, who was too frail to lift up a hand against her son and his violent tendencies, there had been no one else in the world to whom Ren could look for guidance and safety.
Except when Medieval had changed.
It had been sudden; there had been no subtle changes, no quiet gestures that had concerned him. Instead, one night, she just hadn't come.
And she hadn't come ever again.
Ren had never understood; for someone as calm and collected as Medieval, a sibling who was not just a sister, but a twin with whom he shared a sharp, connective bond, it had been almost unbelievable. However, he had found he soon was truly alone - and had then gotten used to it, telling himself he would never again rely on someone.
Ever.
And for years, it seemed to have worked - at least until he'd gotten to Amityville and found people like LW and Jove and Gabrian. Only then had Ren finally let himself relax, accepting the fact that his sister would never again be what she had used to be.
Only now...she was changing again. And Ren had no idea why.
His eyes flickered towards Jove, lips pressing together in a thin line as he tried to figure out what was going on. In her crib, Baroque made a happy gurgling noise. She was sitting up now, and had dragged her newfound friend into her lap, snuggling the puppy against her chest, tiny wings folding together in an attempt to wrap them both up - only they were too small, and did not reach very far.
Lila was looking dumbstruck. Slowly she lowered her still outstretched hand, her face closing off, one glance back towards her silent husband.
"Medieval," she said, in a hard voice. "What are you doing."
Ren's sister lifted her gaze - just as level as the one Ren used when dealing with his parents.
"I'm tired," she said. "Just let them be."
She brushed past Lila, exiting the room, and as she did so, knocked into a bedside table that held, if one looked, a tiny little clump of familiar, glowing mushrooms.
Ren stared after her - and he wasn't the only one. Loki still had not said a word, and after a tense moment, Lila swept from the room, dragging her husband with her and shutting the door behind her with a sharp snap.

Jove could feel the tension in the air. The elder gryphons disapproval, Ren's surprise, Medieval''s tired defiance... It seemed to radiate off everyone except Baroque. She was happily oblivious, coaxing a little murmur from the pup as he was pulled into her lap and squished back into a hug. For anyone else he might have thought about resisting, but he was like a limp rag doll for the scareling. Soft and squishy and light enough to pull around even by someone his own size.
But while Baroque had her way with her adopted brother, Jove's focus was now on his own brother. Ren seemed so conflicted... The pup's glance turned towards Medieval, then back at Ren, and over to his bewildered parents. Then back to Ren.
Finally the parents stepped out.
"Ren?" Jove chirped, wanting to go stand next to his brother, but unable to free himself from the chubby little arms wrapped around him. It was like the first time, he wanted to be close and make sure his brother was okay. He had to!
Although Jove was unaware of Ren's troubled history, he could tell how hard it was for the gryphon to face his family. And Jove wanted to remind him that he was right there the whole time. Whenever Ren needed him.
