Is this thread specifically for Guildhouse RP characters, or others too? Either way, I think it belongs in one of the RP subforums...
I'm quoting her so that she notices. The Guildhouse RP is purely for RP, with the only threads being "Welcome" and the locales, so it will be going in the other RP topic, which might have a slight name alteration to accommodate RP discussion as well as RPs.
"Character of choice"? Does that mean favorite? ...Oh, wow. It had never even occurred to me before. Certainly some are more
fun than others, but of the characters that I have really loved, I don't think that I could pick a favorite. So I'll answer in the context of Guildhouse and talk about Matasoga.
Matasoga was a name that I had used for one other little thing which just so happened to be around the time that I started on Gaia, so I used it again. When I got the Dark Headfin items I decided that he would have dragon blood. I actually avoided the dragon skin pose that came with superior form for a while, because I didn't like the treatment of the face. That problem was taken care of when the clown paint item came out. I started using it, in conjunction with the tail and decided that he was half-dragon, which was a big step down from where he was before.
I haven't played him in a completed or off-Gaia RP. I kind of like keeping him purely on Gaia. I wouldn't like having to scale him back.
Matasoga is like me in many ways, but much more disciplined and lawful. He uses enchantment magic because... I've been down the arcane road many times. Hurling fireballs and lightning is a bit of a yawn. Summoning up demons from the bowels of the Abyss is a little more fun. Commanding the dead to claw their way from their graves and serve you is pretty enjoyable... But there is really nothing like commanding the will of others and wrapping them around your finger. That is why Matasoga uses enchantment magic so frequently. It also suits someone like Matasoga who set up the guild for the purpose that it had.
Unlike other characters, he isn't at all made for combat. His skills and such are made to make him functional as an arcane caster, and he can take more of a beating than most sorcerers, due to outside training, but he's less powerful as a result of that divergence.
I made him as I did for a reason. I hate,
hate powergaming. In my opinion, most people miss the point of RPing entirely, by making empty, masturbatory characters that are no fun at all except in how much damage they can do. That does nothing for me and I really wanted to reject that and move as far from it as I could and as a result made him a lot weaker than I needed to. Eventually I realized "I have had this account longer than anyone that I know. I've made tens of thousands of posts with it. I can't get anymore powerful than I am with the MMO... Matasoga
should be more powerful than this." So I kept him in D & D terms and bumped up his power. In December, he'll be nine years old, and I'm still not epic... So I'd say his level of power is well within justifiable means.
The rp here isn't about the power you have or what you can or can't do. It's about interactions. I only really concern myself with Matasoga's abilities as they pertain (or could pertain) to that and I'm happy with the results. None of my other characters could take his place here, even the others that were leaders. I could imagine some interesting changes taking place if Illvringer had, but it wouldn't be the same place at all. The guild and Matasoga grew and developed together and I wouldn't really want things to be any other way.
