The General of the Negaverse was perched high above the city, looking out like a gargoyle from a stony outcropping atop one of the diverse churches of the city. She did not know what denomination it was, but it was a very handsome building, and she felt like brooding well over the denizens below. It was perfect for that.
The moon crept in the sky behind her, somewhere near three quarters full. An unremarkable cloud was drifting listlessly before it, but it was too small to have any real impact on the scene. The moon wasn't right, the cloud wasn't right, and the sky wasn't quite dark enough for the stars to make up for it.
No, this was not a good night for textbook villainy. It was not perfectly clear, enough to see the thoughts of the cosmos above, and it was not stormy in any way, to make the world a creepy setting for play. It was just a normal night.
Painite had to do something about that. To make up for it, somehow, and prove that terrible and creepy things could happen regardless of the perfect set up. The night was her play thing, and she was going to mold it as she saw fit.
Tonight she was hunting. Senshi, knights. It didn't matter. She was not after energy tonight, not as she usually was. No, tonight was a night for blood, and starseeds.

To Super Sailor Grus, the night was a rare one of beauty.
She stood in the exact middle of the park, staring up at the stars so clearly visible now that the winter clouds were taking a break from dumping snow on the city. Said snow was piled in drifts along the walkways, cleared by some poor soul working a minimum wage job for maximum hours. The cold was only a mild distraction from the stars above, and she wondered for the billionth time if every star had a senshi for it. If there were that many senshi, how was Chaos able to cause such problems? Were there an equal number of Negaverse agents?
Her musings were lost as her thoughts shifted elsewhere. Where were the Knights from? Camelot was from earth, but she had also met one from the Cosmos. What a huge and overwhelming task. To be a Knight of the whole universe....
She wandered as she thought. Out from the park, and onto the street where only a few were willing to be out at this hour. Ever since the battles had started, fewer and fewer people were engaging in nightly activities outside of bars. A good sign for the senshi, and a bad sign for the Negaverse.
At the church Grus stopped, staring up at it through dirty blonde bangs. How many people attended church now, hoping some higher being would protect them from the monsters that ran rampant in the city? If only they knew that their prayers were being answered by teenagers forsaking their normal lives to risk it all against the youma and their trainers in the black of night.

Painite sensed the approaching senshi and a wicked grin curled across her pretty, small features. She was a dainty thing, tiny in body and innocent in face, but that was just one more trick she could play with her her ultimate benefit.
She watched the streets below, not having to worry about how she was going to get down from the perch she had chosen when the time came. She would use her favorite method of transportation, of course.
Nothing beat Teleporting.
There were no higher beings watching over this church, just one Earth bred demon. She leaped from the roof and came falling down toward the target below, knowing she would be seen as she did so. It was kind of hard to miss a woman in a cape and bearing a giant spear falling from the sky.
Until she vanished from sight entirely.
She reappeared behind Grus immediately, not taking any time to really note who the senshi was, or what she looked like. Details like that didn't matter. All Painite needed to know was there would be one fewer senshi after tonight. She brought her spear forward, trying to stab. There was time for the senshi to react, but Painite was hoping she wasn't that fast.

The church didn't speak, and neither did a higher being. The street was quiet, and still Grus stared. She had never been a big church-goer; she couldn't even try to tell you more than the basic of the Bible. She didn't put stake in anything specific even before she became a senshi, and she cared even less now. If there was someone out there who was supposed to watch over the universe, then why were there senshi dying? Why were their homes destroyed?
She felt almost like a child staring up at an unknown grown up. She wasn't sure how to interpret what she saw. And what she saw confused her.
It looked as if one of the gargoyles had taken flight. Her eyes focused on what her brain tried to make sense of while the creature fell. What in the world....?
And suddenly, the gargoyle was gone. Grus blinked, not trusting her eyes at first. The one thing she could trust, her senshi sense, was firing rapidly. That wasn't something Order aligned...
She got her answer when her brain practically exploded with red flags a mere moment later. She twisted on the spot, seeing something sharp, like a giant spear jab towards her. Her arms moved of their own accord, lifting while she dropped and rolled to the left. She quickly rose, taking a step backwards.
"Who the hell are you?" She asked, beads twisted around her back bow clattering as they came together.

Painite grinned as the senshi dove out of the way of her spear, seeing the surprise and fear etched on her face. Good. That would have been too easy, Painite decided, and that was not what she wanted. She needed something fulfilling: if she wanted to just murder someone she could pick on civilians.
And where was the fun in that?
"General Painite," she said, not shy with the introductions. It wasn't one of those 'honor' things she had heard about. Where fighters gave their names as signs of respect, so they would know who they were killing/who was killing them. No, she just liked her name being associated with the terrible, awesome things she did.
She watched the senshi, not asking to know who she was in return. Painite didn't care, not tonight. The senshi would just be a blood stain in due time.
"You'd better keep moving, little bird," she cooed, charging after her. She brought her spear forward, reminding herself that she didn't need a reason to hate someone. A stranger was not a stranger when they were a senshi. They were always an enemy, and she still carried haunting words in the back of her mind. Kill them all. That was what she had been told, what Tanzanite said. Kill them all.
She would, her way.

Painite....painite...where had she heard that name before?
It rang within her, like something she had read long ago, and couldn't fully recall. Though it was very difficult to think when she had warnings going off in her head about the girl. She didn't like the way her power felt. It felt like it was going to overwhelm her.
Her limited thought was cut short by the woman's charge, spear out in front like a jouster. Grus twisted, the edge of her skirt getting caught on the sharp point and after jerking her hip, it tore. Feathers floated down, like blood from a wound.
It seemed that this agent wasn't much for talking, so all thoughts of getting away with words were shoved roughly away. Grus brought her hands together, and shouted "Feather Fall Strike!" Her super attack flew quickly forward, while she danced to the left. Hopefully she could cause a little damage, and block Painite's view long enough to get a punch in. Or run away.
The anger that emanated off of the other woman's body was almost palpable. It was like Grus has killed her first born son or something, when she really hadn't done anything at all. Were there those who would attack like this, without cause?

Generally, Painite was all for talking. Well. If she was the one doing it. She loved banter and wit, and she appreciated clever battle opponents. But once they moved on to their speeches and preaching she lost interest. Or, like tonight, she would much rather be fighting than wasting time talking. She'd have plenty of time to gloat and taunt when she was winning: she'd save all her good lines until then.
For now, it was quips and nothing more.
She heard Grus call her attack and turned, growling, her senses up and her muscles keen. She was ready for anything, she felt, and certainly willing to do whatever she had to. Her confidence fueled her, and while it made her reckless it also made her dangerous.
Painite grinned.
"Do you think you're clever, senshi?" she asked. She teleported as the attack came toward her, though she got the beginnings of it before she reappeared almost directly behind the senshi. There was no playing around here, though Painite was grinning and certainly having fun. She stabbed her staff forward again, not aiming for anything in specific, though she would love to get some vital.

Grus liked the talking part. THe banter, the chance to try and convince her enemy that it really wasn't worth it, the whole fighting thing. Half of the time, she could get away. Plus the banter was fun! When else did anyone get the chance to exchange wit that way anymore?
The cloud of feathers stopped, and Grus ran forward, but then skidded to a halt. Painite wasn't there. What the...?
Her answer to where the Negaverser had gone was a pain in her side. It was sudden and sharp, right below her rib cage, taking her breath away. Grus staggered sideways, hand instinctively going to the wound while she gasped for air. Her hand was warm and sticky, but she avoided looking at the gash. No need to faint here. Sparkles of pain flickered in her eyes. She had never been stabbed before. Even with her beating from Leto, it had never hurt this bad.
She turned wobbily, staring at Painite with wide eyes. "You freakin stabbed me!" she practically shouted, almost hoping someone was around to help her. But it seemed that this time, no one would help her. And this time, her power wasn't enough.
For the second time in her career as a senshi, Super Grus feared for her life.

The sight of blood was always a unique thrill for Painite. She didn't like the sight of it alone, particularly her own blood. No, the red, warm, sticky liquid was just not her cup of tea, and she was not much a fan of gory movies because of it. But knowing that her enemy was bleeding, that she caused it? Seeing that red spreading across a white fuku? That was something she delighted in.
Something she craved the sight of, and reveled in each time she got to experience it. Making senshi bleed, that was fun.
"How are you surprised? I am wielding a giant spear. What did you think I would do with it, tickle you?"
She laughed mockingly, a deep belly sound of pure amusement and joy, in her definition of it. She couldn't help but feel mirthful: moments like this were what she lived for. What she strove for, and why she pushed herself as hard as she could every time she powered up. This was what they had to do: to topple the Senshi threat.
And, really, she loved a good fight. A good fight was one that went the way she wanted it to: and this was doing just that. At the moment, she saw no other end but her ultimate victory.
"But don't you worry, my little feathery friend. Your sad little career as a senshi is coming to its end, with no real benefits as you retire into the ether. I hope you are at peace with all you've accomplished so far in the name of your alien brethren. Say goodbye to tonight. It's the last one you'll see."
She grinned and charged, aiming this time not to play. This time, she meant to end things. This time, she was aiming to kill.

Oh man she was gonna die.
Painite seemed to run in slow motion. It took her hours to take a step. Grus was at a loss. So here it was. Her whole senshi career ending and why? Because she wouldn't fight, couldn't fight. All of her strength was in numbers. As long as someone was there to help her, she would be ok. She relied on others so much that now on her own, she couldn't handle herself.
Painite...a moment of clarity gripped her. Painite was the name of the girl that kidnapped her, tried to take her star seed! The girl with the hobby horse for a weapon....
Then she was helpless. Castille was helpless. As a civilian against an agent of Chaos, she was weak. But not Grus. Her heart pounded as Painite took another slow step toward her. Grus was a senshi! There was no more relying on others. There was no more wishing someone would help. She had to stand up for herself! Chaonis told her that there were Negaverse agents that wouldn't think twice about killing her. And she didn't believe him until now. This moment, when a new very powerful Painite was running at her with a spear. She needed to be strong! What would Polaris say? She couldn't cry anymore.
Her head was pounding in unison with her heart. From deep within her, where her magic resided, she felt a pulsation. Time resumed its normal speed long enough for her to shout "NO!"
Her whole body burned with new power, a power that changed everything about her, including her fuku. Now she sported long white wings where her bow was. Equally long was her collar. She felt power. And confidence. She wasn't weak anymore. She was Super no more. She was Eternal Sailor Grus!

It figured this would happen.
Whenever Painite felt she was going to win, she was finally going to get her revenge, even in a small way, on the senshi, they did something cheap to win or to make the odds more even. It seemed like their precious White Moon energy, or whatever it was, made them super lucky. That damn magic of theirs was probably also to blame.
Whatever it was, it was cheating.
Here she was, moments from victory, and everything changed. The power of the senshi increased, her aura all but glowing in Painite's mind for a moment as she powered up into something stronger. Now she had a goddamn Eternal Senshi on her hands. But she was a Negaverse General: she feared nothing. She was not going to let this senshi better her.
"Do you think your new costume will save you, little girl?!" she asked, her voice sounding vicious and harsh even to her own ears.

She looked at her gloves, which now wrapped around her middle finger. Her back felt a little lopsided with the addition of the white wings to her fuku. Newly made Eternal Grus looked up from her hands to the now furious Painite, and she paled. But the power of her upgrade kept her from being too scared. She could do this.
"My costume won't save me, no. But perhaps a new power will."
The words flowed into her mind, forming a new phrase for a new power. She thurst he hands out, gripping the magic inside her and said "Feather Barrage." The feathers that normally would form a cloud circled her instead, glowing with a red and orange outline. They spun there waiting until she thrust her hands forward. The effect was instantaneous. The feathers flew in a ring outward, leaving trails of red and orange behind.

Painite growled.
No fluffy feather butt was going to get the better of her, damn it. This senshi had been feathery enough before, but now she had those damn wings. They always got so much more cocky when they had those wings. Of course, Painite was very cocky because of her General status, and she could hardly fault them for believing in their power, but damn it. They were weaker. They would lose eventually, why did they have to be so stubborn about it?
Oh well, at least it made the fight a bit more interesting.
Neither combatant knew what this attack of hers did, really, considering Grus had never used it before and Painite had certainly never seen it. She held her staff up, length gripped in both hands, in front of her defensively. She remembered what the last attack had done, and imagined something like that would happen again.
She would just teleport out of harm's way.
Then the feathers began to stick to her, burn through her clothes, and for a moment she thought she had been impaled. Where had senshi gotten attacks that could do something like that? No, she wasn't bleeding, she wasn't dead. These damn things hurt like a b***h, though, and she stumbled backwards in surprise.
"Damn you!" She yelled, trying to regain herself, but the pain was lingering and she couldn't get her feet under her. She was down on one knee, leaning on her spear.

...What the hell happened?
She fired off her power, and suddenly Panite's clothes were burning! Did she somehow obtain fire as well as feathers? Did a senshi ever get two power spheres? The burn was enough to bring her down to a knee, but Grus stepped backwards, hand over her mouth. It looked like she had really hurt the girl. Granted she was gong to kill her. It was self defense. But she had never seen an attack cause that much damage. It looked as if her feathers had finally gained some power...but she wasn't so sure that she wanted it. Seeing someone hurt like that made her feel sick. She hadn't felt sick in a while.
"Oh my god." She mumbled from behind her hand. What had she done? She wanted to ask if the other girl was alright, but it was obvious that she wasn't.
Instead she accessed her magic again, calling out "Feather Fall Cloud!" The harmless one. One she could use to get away. The swirl of feathers flew toward the General, and she tried to make her escape, running back along one of the church walls. Had she become a monster?

Painite growled in pain and tried to get to her feet, but was blinded by the cloud of feathers. She wobbled, and struggled to get back upright but by the time she did the senshi was running away. Painite hissed, knowing she had to retreat. She had taken damage and she needed to rethink her strategy.
"Don't think this is over, senshi!" She called, needing to at least get one good threat in. "When I find you again I'll make sure you and everyone you know suffers for this! Keep your eyes open, little girl! I'll find you again!"
She would keep her word. If she saw the senshi again, she would make note of any friends she had with her. She would make sure to bring them all pain, and to get revenge for her injuries and, more, her pride.
There was no way she would let this indignity stand. She didn't realize that just by being a victim to this attack that she had damaged the senshi, but if she did, she would use that to her advantage as well.
For now, though, she teleported away, to go home and nurse her wounds.
