 Winterborne was hungry. An unfamiliar doe with a head crowned by antlers easily stripped a large branch from a tree, holding it down with one hoof as she ate both bark and leaves. Absolutely no manners. You'd think she was starving. The little clearing she had chosen to forage in was already showing signs of wear. The smaller plants were trampled or nibbled almost to the ground. She had left some sort of now-unidentifiable carcass under a tree, where it was slowly attracting flies. And now she was busy digging up tubers, flinging the dirt carelessly away, snorting as she searched for them by smell. She did enjoy tubers. All in all though, not a pretty sight.

The buck watched from the edge of the clearing, his eyes narrowed in distaste. Such a pretty doe, engaged in such a disgusting display of lack of control. His tail twitched. His sister would never be seen in such a state.
He stepped forward into the clearing, his forelegs picking daintily around the mess of upturned roots at its edge. Frostbite wasn't one for idle chatter, but this doe's behavior called forth one of his rare pronouncements. "You'll leave nothing alive," Frost nearly spat, his voice a low rumble in his chest.

Winterborne did not betray her surprise. She calmly raised her head, giving the buck a sidelong glance and brief assessment. Young, yes. Pristine white and faint yellow. A haughty expression. Healthy, well-built, with a steady diet. He looked handsome enough, she supposed, but that did not overly concern her. She dealt only rarely with other kin, and this encounter was one she did not plan. She had expected that this area would be relatively quiet, not that strangers would accost her about her eating habits.
Assessment finished, she rolled a tuber out of her current hole with her nose. It joined its peers in a small pile she had set off to the side. Only then did she address his statement.
"I do not plan to return here until next winter. It will regrow," she said, as if this was readily evident and the only relevant issue with practically denuding small patches of swamp.

The buck raised his brows in an expression of haughty distaste. Clearly this doe thought of nothing but herself -- a quality Frostbite found quite acceptable in himself, although not in others. He would not let go of an opportunity to berate someone for their faults.
"You aren't the only one who goes hungry in the winter. What about the other creatures that call this area their home?"

Winterborne merely snorted.
"Well, perhaps if they were truly hungry, they would have gotten here sooner. There is good hunting here, and it is foolish to leave it if needed. I need it, therefore I have taken it," she explained simply, frowning. This buck irritated her in some way she could not quite define, and she could not ignore him the way she could ignore most other kin.
It bothered her.
Bending her head, she took a crisp bite of tuber to mask her irritation. Maybe if she tried harder to pretend he wasn't there, he would leave.

Frostbite opened his mouth to deliver another scathing retort, but found himself lacking one. To his way of thinking, this doe was right. Perhaps she was more of a kindred spirit than he had thought.
Still, he wasn't going to be pleasant. He let out a snorted breath, the warmth turning to clouds of moisture in the frozen air. "I guess it would be too much to think you might share?" His tone dripped icily.
