although being somewhat new to the SH video games, since the movie came out I've always wondered.....just what exactly is it that brings out that natural instinct of fear in us when we play.

Is it the filth the grime of the town? Is it the lonely feeling? Is it the fog? Or the siren? (Omg those things just really creep me out.)

I haven't played the first one, but I've been told its the scariest one. I just fnished 2. And honestly, seeing the movie, I kinda expected way more from it. It was like crap my pants scary. But I still didn't play it at night. Lol

Now SH4 I only had the demo.... but waking up not knowing where you are is moderately scary. A giant gaping hole in the bathroom, freaky. Messages on the door. And of course not being able to contact the outside world.

So what is it?

And yes I. Know I can't watch horror movies, but I think they should seriously make a SH that is like a horror movie. Things jump out. The things that make your heart pound out of your chest. A game that would have you looking over your shoulder. Cuz when you think about the whole story of SH you would expect a scarier game. I would play that.

Okay I'm gonna stop now. I think iv gone off topic lol

Silent Hill is a psychological horror game... its unique in its kind, and that is that it plays off of your inner mind, emotions, and thoughts. There are physical fears in this world, such as what you mention of things jumping out (one of my personal weaknesses). However, Silent Hill cracks your skull and finds what REALLY triggers your adrenaline.... The Fog so thick you cannot see what lurks within, but yet you hear the footsteps... yuo see the blood on the ground... and as you build the courage to venture forward, telling yourself it is just a game, there it is. THE SCREAM.... suddenly you feel mortal again, even as a character of pixels.... what if that scream was you soon? what if it was your blood? Where can you run?

The fog is so thick you cannot see behind you, and whats more you think theres feet shuffling behind you... no, not feet... a dragging noise... like some dead flesh squishing against concrete. You have a weapon, that makes you feel secure... but the durability is faltering... and when it breaks, what will you do then? You are alone, helpless, only your wits can save you, and yet you cannot gather your thoughts for even a short while.

THAT is Silent Hill.. It is breaking every boundary of a safety net, and putting yourself, mentally, in a position it does not like. For some, certain parts are not scary because we still feel comfortable.... but jsut as soon the game will take advantage of ur lowered guard and strike hard with a sudden burst of a fear you cannot contain.

I can see where you're coming from. My point is, with it being SH, its labled a horror game. But in some ways it doesn't Live up to that. I want to be scared out of mywits.

The truth is, Dominated, if that is your true aim then it is a bar truly set too high. You simply cannot be scared THAT much, only because it is not your personal fears... it is not your body that roams those streets in peril. Silent Hill, however, unlike any other game boasts the ability to grant a true thrill ride. I have never played any of the games, no matter how many times, and not gotten an adrenaline rush and a few scares. It is the only game I can truly say has, and probably never will stop, continued to supply those feelings.

If you review your post, you'll find that what your asking is for a silent hill that speaks more to YOUR fears. Because you specifically mention things popping out at you... This is something that speaks generally to you, and you know it would get you. However, just like some aspects of recent games did not scare you, the JUMP OUT factor will not scare others. One day someone may yet make a Silent Hill where you choose your fears, and they are implemented into the game just for you.

^Pretty much.

I know that SH: SM *promised* to be that psychological link between the player and Silent Hill, but failed somewhat (more for some than others). Unfortunately, if you are looking for a game to really "scare" you, I'd go for Siren or Fatal Frame. I've heard good things from a lot of horror friends of mine about them.

I agree, I was actually just considering mentioning those games to her. Especially for the jump out at you factor. I was hoping SM would answer the issue to linking players to the game, but as Blue Chick said, it was in vain. Ultimately, I guess I expect people to enjoy the games regardless. After all, a good game is a good game by any standard or imagination.

Never truer words.

I played through Forbidden Siren (the first one) and it did have some legit spooky moments. Some of the monsters are really creepy and the fact that you are forced to more through the game slowly because 1)The monsters sense you through movement, 2) you usually either have no weapons or limited ammo/short range melee, and 3) the enemies cannot be killed, only stunned.

All that on top of the really involved and unnerving atmosphere of the soundtrack, it is no wonder shock that one of the members of Team Silent created Siren.

I've yet to play Fatal Frame though do want to.

Remember: Be it video game or movie, the best fear lasts until well after you've shut off the power....

Personally, I enjoy the fear of the Unknown or the Unexplained. There's no blood (well, not much), no bodies, and no sign of anyone. No sign of struggle, no sign of crisis, but something is...off. No, something is wrong. You know something is wrong, but not what - which means, you have no idea how to prepare for it.

You don't know what happened,
You don't know if it'll happen again.

But God help you if it does.

This creates fearful moments even in games that aren't meant to be scary.

I believe we've grasped good concepts on perceptions of fear. My only hope is that more developers will look into horror games. Its a field with a lot of room to grow, and LOTS of room for story and depth as we have proven many times on here with Silent Hill alone.

What developers also need to remember is that less is more. Look at the first Silent Hill: dingy graphics (by today's standards), extremely limited field of vision, clunky combat system - All these things combined into a notably frightful experience. You need to fight for every step you take, physically and mentally.

Another good example would be Yume Nikki, a Japanese game made with RPG Maker, featuring little more than a dozen or so maps to explore, and nothing else. The horror lies within its subtle elements and events, along with downright jump scares and unnerving ambiance and beyond. There's absolutely NO backstory whatsoever, and the entire game is left up to interpretation of the Player. This usually leads to unfortunate implications.

Bah, I'm starting to ramble now. sweatdrop But yeah, it seems to me like even the Horror genre is becoming somewhat mainstreamed in their approach.

The problem with most horror games these days is that they try to live up to Hollywood movie standards. sad To me that is the major problem Silent Hill to me is that one series left that focuses on the players fears through feelings and phsycology while others focus on gore like it's some slasher film. Don't get me wrong though I like some of these games and they can be scary. Example: Dead Space

Also I am a huge zombie fan and all these games have leaned in a hollywood direction. Still fun and great stories but more action than scares I'm glad to here that Resident Evil may be returning to its roots.

To sum all this up I feel like some Western developers do not realize the potential that the survival-horror genre has. Eastern developers like Konami and others seem to realize this potential and have been working hard to add to it ever since the first Silent Hill was released over 10 years ago. I do hope many more developers catch onto this and some already have like the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra games. Those truly scared me almost, if not, just as much as Silent Hill.

^ Yeah I've heard about that part and am really excited to see how it works out. A good friend told me it is like being *in* a J/K-horror movie so it is way scarier. XD
