He was getting lazy.
Again.
Ever since the Surrounding, he’d been cutting back on his number of patrols. On some nights it was because he was busy. He had performances to worry about, and practice outside of that, and a million other things that he’d come to put before late-night patrols. On others nights it was because he just didn’t feel like it. Winter had a way of doing that to him. During the rest of the year he had no problem being outdoors. He even preferred it sometimes to being stuck inside all day. But winter was different.
Winter was cold.
Ganymede shivered as he ambled down a deserted street, hands rubbing at his upper arms as a means of retaining warmth. It wasn’t working very well. The season may have been a bit mild this year—it certainly hadn’t snowed as much as the year before—but walking around in tiny shorts and a shoulder-baring top did nothing to make the temperatures feel more comfortable. The stockings only helped so much, and the fingerless gloves did nothing at all.
He began muttering to himself, wondering—if both sides insisted on continuing the war—if they could suggest some sort of temporary ceasefire this time next year, to remain in place at least until the weather was more tolerable. He supposed he should have had a bit more sense and brought a jacket with him, but the weather didn’t usually cross his mind until he was out in it. When he decided to go out on patrol, he was typically more concerned with who he could potentially meet and the youma he could potentially dust.
He could sense another presence nearby. Another senshi. Good. He looked around as he turned onto another street and saw a figure some yards ahead. He squinted to try and get a better look. It was the cornrows that eventually gave her away.
Ah. The weird girl from the food drive.
“Hey!” he called out to her, quickening his steps to try and catch up. “Acubens, right?”

Acubens was out again, for the third time that week, after a fight with her family. Stay home, it’s too cold. But Acubens could not shake the strange feeling that she should have been out there, on the streets, looking for something. Maybe it was an inborn feeling, or maybe it was the need to protect her family now that she had the ability to do so. It was what had kept her up night after night. How can I best protect them? Right now, with the little information she had, Acubens knew that the best shot she had at keeping all of them safe was to be out where the war was being waged. Out there she could stop the monsters before they got to her home, before they took what was hers.
But it wasn’t like she could just tell her family that. Their best chance for survival stood with them not knowing that Acubens was a warrior in an ancient fight she knew nothing about. What would they think if she transformed right in front of them and then told them that she was going out to fight monsters? They’d lock her up. Marcia and Grayson were so protective, and if Acubens suddenly revealed herself…
Ganymede was the one who brought Acubens back to reality. She looked up at her name was called, turning to face the girl who’d called upon her. Or boy… Acubens still wasn’t sure how she should refer to Ganymede. Still, she smiled at her and lifted her arm in a friendly wave.
“So you still want to talk to me even after I lost my mind before?” She laughed at herself, but still hid a deep embarrassment for her behavior. “I never did thank you for talking to me. Well, listening to be while I rambled.” She closed the distance between the two of them and grinned again, holding her hand out to the Senshi of Lust. “Yes, Acubens. And I remember you’re Ganymede. Of the Shakespear play, As You Like It. Or As You Like It. Depending on the title you prefer.”

Ganymede blinked down at the hand that was being extended to him and took it after only a moment of hesitation. “Shakespeare?” he wondered. “Uhh… no, before I only knew Ganymede from Marlowe. Had to read Dido once for class. The only Shakespeare I ever read was Romeo and Juliet, and that was only because I had to. Class again. Except for that one I kind of just popped in the movie and read the Spark Notes. I’m not really all that in to reading. Only thing I ever finished was Harry Potter,” he admitted.
He released her hand after a quick shake and fell into step beside her, figuring it would be better to keep moving than standing around. At least they’d be a little warmer that way.
He glanced over at her as they walked, trying to figure out what he thought about her. Weird, definitely, but she didn’t seem like such a spaz now that they were no longer around such a large group of people. He could sort of understand that even if he didn’t share a similar sort of anxiety. If he ever felt anxious around any of the others, it typically morphed into anger and annoyance, not panic.
Ganymede shrugged off her appreciation. He didn’t think he’d done anything special. “I don’t mind listening. I ramble a lot, too. Sometimes. Not so much other times. I guess it depends on the situation. And who I’m with. Like, you know, if there are any youma around. Or if I’m arguing with someone. I don’t tend to ramble then, but… it’s different in smaller groups. Makes it easier to talk. I was pretty much a loner when I first started out. I didn’t really start interacting with people until I met Val and started getting to know Europa a bit more.”
But things were different now, and he rather liked it. Being on a team was infinitely better than being alone, he decided, even if he didn’t always see eye-to-eye with the people he was on a team with.
“You’ll get better,” he assured her. “If I did, you can, too.”

Oh dear, Acubens' nerd was showing again. She withdrew her hand with an apologetic smile, linking both hands behind her back loosley. Absently, she kicked a clump of snow, watching it glitter as it fell back to earth, no wind to change it's trajectory. She grinned at it, enjoying the almost megical quality it seemed to hold for her.
Upon hearing Ganymeade's book list, however, Acubens giggled a little. There was no malice in her laughter, only light hearted amusement.
"I couldn't imagine not reading. My mom used to read to my brother and I before we went to bed. The moment I figured out how to read the book she read to us the most, I wanted to read it to her." Acubens smiled brightly at the memory. "I thought she was going to cry when I finished. She's always said that that night was the best gift I'd ever given her."
Oh god, she was talking about herself far too much. Acubens cleared her throat and stilled her racing mind. Stop that, no one cares about your life.
"Sorry," she muttered again, pulling at her bottom lip with her thumb and pointer finger. She fell silent as Ganymeade began to speak about when it was proper to ramble.
"Well, it's be kind of hard to just... blaber when your life in on the line... or would be be easier? Like... a calming technique. Or even a distraction, I guess." Her smile returned to her face easily, resulting in a small giggle. "Like, you just jabber the nega's ears off until they beg you to leave."
It was the vote of confidence that made her blush, however. "Oh... thanks..." She tossed her braids a little, pulling on the beads. "I'll make it one way or the other... it's just a matter of what side of the war I'm on, you know?"

Ganymede could have reassured her by saying a bit about his own life, perhaps a little story about how his mother used to read to him, too, but while Acubens seemed perfectly fine revealing things like that about herself to someone who was more or less a stranger, Ganymede wasn’t quite so comfortable discussing much of anything in his civilian life with a girl he’d only met once before, even something so simple as a childhood memory.
He focused on other things instead. He liked to try to keep his two lives as separate as possible anyway. It was easier to talk about the war as Ganymede, and easier to talk about the normal things in life as Paris.
“I can’t imagine it’s any easier on either side,” he observed.
He couldn’t say he was all that comfortable with how easy she could talk about potentially having some sort of a role on the other side of things. Most of the other senshi he knew were pretty set in their ways, confident in their position even if they weren’t sure how to make a difference.
“I mean, we’re all sort of going through the same stuff, even if we’re on different sides. I’m pretty sure, beneath it all, we’re all just normal people,” he said.
Ganymede tried to think of something to reassure her that this was the side she was meant to be on, but since he’d never really encountered anyone who seemed confused the way she was, he didn’t know what more to say that he hadn’t already.
“Even thinking that… I guess I don’t really understand how you think and feel about all this. I mean, I didn’t want to do this at all when I started out, but it wasn’t because of a conflict of sides. I just didn’t think any of this should have anything to do with me. Once I realized that I couldn’t run away… I’ve always known what I think is right. I’ve seen and heard enough to know that where I am now, and the people I’m with, are my best chance at figuring all this out and finding an end to it.”

Acubens considered Ganymede's sentiment as she chewed on her lip. "I guess this is sort of a... the grass is greener situation, isn't it," she offered with a mirthless laugh. But somehow... either she didn't want to, or really didn't believe that it was so. Anything had to be better than this horrible darkness that Acubens found herself stumbling around in every day. Civilian or Senshi, she had no idea what she was doing. As a civilian, how did she tell ehr family what she was? Did she tell them at all? What happens when they get put in danger because of it?
Micah would never forgive herself if her family was put in danger. Of that, she was positive.
"Ah, but is there an end to this at all? Or is this all some cruel, cosmic commentary on teh futility of eliminating one side of a balanced system? Without darkness, how can we have the light? Without evil, how can we recognize good? Without chaos, what is order? The war is, in itself, fultile, I think." Acubens wighed witha growl, mussing her cornrows again with a vicious hand.
"Bah, it doesn't even matter. Like the sentiments of one girl are ever going to change the world, right?" She bounced a little in place, arms locking behind her back. "No, let's talk about something happier. Europa... what's she like?" Acubens had ever only met her once before, after all.

Frowning slightly, Ganymede mumbled to himself, “Who ever said an end meant eliminating one side?”
He wasn’t sure he liked such a black-and-white way of thinking. Elimination, to him, was the more simple answer to a problem that was far from simple. He much preferred finding a solution that resulted in as few deaths as possible on either side. Coexistence certainly wouldn’t be easy, but if it could somehow be achieved at least the struggle would be over and none of them would be caught in this vicious cycle of victory and failure any longer. He figured Acubens was right in saying neither could exist without the other, and it made the effort for peace and coexistence seem all the more imperative to him.
“Europa?” Ganymede wondered, blinking in momentary confusion before he realized that the other senshi was asking him to elaborate. “Er… well… she’s… I mean, she knows what she’s doing and she knows how to keep it together in a tough situation. She listens to what people have to say and actually considers it instead of just dismissing it like a few other assholes I could mention, and even if she doesn’t agree with it she at least respects their right to have that opinion. She’s… supportive. She encourages people to do their best, but I think she also realizes that one person’s best isn’t the same as someone else’s, and the important thing is to just do what you can when you’re ready for it.”
He had certainly benefited from Europa’s support and encouragement, even when it was being directed toward someone else and not necessary at him. After being looked down on and barely even given a chance, it was very empowering to have someone who was experienced actually see him as a worthy ally.
“At least, that’s my experience with her. She was one of the first people to really give me the time of day. I met her, and then Valhalla, and then the other Jovians, and I realized I didn’t have to be alone, because there are people who believe in me.”

Acubens blushed as her apperent misgivings were exposed by Ganymede's questioning. "I guess," she muttered, pluching at the feathers on her bracers, "That's just what I've gleaned by myself. I mean, this is a war, right? Isn't the goal of war to kill the enemy?" She smiled, suddenly self concious of her already less than solid beliefs. "Like I said, I don't think that's the answer; in fact I think it's a stupid answer..." Acubens trailed off again, watching the sidewalk as they walked, suddenly very interested in her own boots. "I don't know. I didn't have anyone like Europa when I awakened. What I know I sort of... have had to guess at."
While Acubens was naturally happy for Ganymede -- she was human after all -- she couldn't deny the jealousy of his position. He knew where he was, wherehe was going. Acubens couldn't even get her footing now. And she was only just realizing that senshi could team up... was it a draft, did someone find you? Were you assigned? It all made her head spin painfully, causing her stomach to twist sickly.
"How did you... I mean..." Acubens couldn't spit the words out with all of her confusion. "Teams," she finally spat out simply. "How do they form? Is there some roster with someone in charge or what?"

“In my opinion,” Ganymede began slowly, “the goal of war is to protect as many people as you can. Killing is a bit too final for my tastes, and really it only makes the enemy angrier, which means they’ll want to kill us more, so it just becomes this cyclical thing that never ends.”
He tried to speak as gently as possible, because he knew he had the habit of being argumentative and snarky and he didn’t want to the be the person to discourage a new senshi when he’d had experience with that sort of behavior from others when he’d first awakened. He certainly wasn’t the best at offering guidance, nor did he truly know what some of the answers were or how they were supposed to find them and end the war, but he thought he should at least try to be as supportive as he could and keep the snark down to a minimum.
He laughed at Acubens’ question about teams. “Nothing like that,” he said in amusement. “If that’s how it went I wouldn’t have joined one. I don’t know very much about the other teams. The only other one I’m even all that familiar with are the Zodiacs and… well, I don’t have the best track record with some of them. But at least with the Jovians, I guess we came together because a lot of us started to meet up and recognized our connection to Jupiter. Europa and I are moons of Jupiter. So are a lot of the others… Kallichore and Pasiphae and a few more. Then Valhalla. He’s a page of Jupiter. We just sort of started to band together. The connection helped, but it was a little more natural than saying ‘we’re from Jupiter so therefore we must come together as a team.’ We didn’t have to join if we didn’t want to, and we have a couple of others who aren’t related to Jupiter as far as I can tell. One of them’s a squire of Mercury, and the other is… a star, I think.”
The Jovians were a subject he was much more comfortable talking about, if only because he felt as if he could answer any questions pretty knowledgably. He hadn’t been one of the first ones gunning for a team, but now that he had one he supported it whole-heartedly.
“Some teams, I assume, have some sort of a connection as a basis, like the Zodiacs, and the Jovians, too, even though we have members from outside of the Jovian system. Other teams I’m not so sure of. Some of them might just band together because they work well with one another and don’t want to go through all this alone. Some might be more exclusive, others more open, I have no idea, but a lot of us seem to be around high-school age, so I suppose having a bunch of cliques isn’t really all that surprising if you think about it. I think the most important thing is to find people who like you for who you are and who you share a common ideal with, and then go from there. You can’t force it. Just let it happen.”

Was Micah going about this whole war thing wrong? She listened to Ganymede, trying to sort out what she believed from what she was now learning. Both options seemed simple but... both were so complicated in practice... If Micah were to go about saving everyone... well, that was just impractical. But if she tried to destroy everyone who opposed her... she'd be a monster.
Ganymedes laughter broke though her musings, and for a moment she'd forgotten that she hadn't spoken at all. She stopped her self from accusing him of laughing at her worries. She blushed at her almost blunder, pulling the feathers from her bracers nervously as she listened. God, he sounded so happy. It was like when Micah was listening to someone talking about someone they loved, and she, herself, was pathetically alone. Jealousy bit at her stomach, no matter how hard she tried to bite it down.
"So..." She ventured, trying to keep her voice clear of envy, "I could just... start a team, you know... out of the blue... or join another?" She much preferred the latter. While Micah wasn't really sure she was up to starting her own team, she'd try if she had to. It would require leadership, discipline, two things she was not strong in.

“I guess so,” Ganymede replied. He didn’t feel totally comfortable speaking for other teams when he didn’t even know them and wasn’t even aware of how many were out there, but he didn’t want to just say “I don’t know” and leave it at that. He’d feel bad if he left Acubens without any decent answers.
“I mean, I can’t say how it’d be joining another team,” he admitted. “I’ve only really ever worked with the Jovians, and then talked to maybe one of the Zodiacs and argued with a couple of other people who I guess were allied with the Zodiac princess or whatever, and the only other team I’ve ever really heard of beyond that is the Blood Moon Court. One of my teammates used to sort of be a member, but some stuff happened with them so I don’t know how present or active they are anymore, and I wouldn't recommend them to you on principle. I really couldn’t tell if there are any specific ways you need to go about joining. Like I said, some of them might be more exclusive, others more open.”
He frowned to himself. He didn’t like what he was saying. It didn't help that he didn't have a lot of relevant information, but if someone else had said anything similar to him when he’d first been starting out, he would have taken it as “you might not belong to this or that for these reasons” and that definitely wasn’t the sort of message he wanted to be sending.
“I think, if you want to join a team, you should think very hard about what’s important to you, about what you want to accomplish in the war and how you want to go about doing that, and then find a team that has those same goals. If that means starting your own and then searching out like-minded people, start your own. Or if you find a team that suits you, talk to a few members who are already a part of it, see how well you work with them, and then figure out what it takes to join. It’s all up to what you feel comfortable with and what you happen to be looking for. But don’t feel like you have to be on a team. We should all probably learn to work together a bit better, but you shouldn’t feel like you absolutely have to belong to a certain group of people in order to be a valuable asset. The teams aren’t everything in this fight. It’s all of us as free-thinking individuals that matter more.”

What's important to you. Well, what int he hell was that? Alexij. Alexij was important to Acubens. And Keren. Oh god, above all else thsoe two were important to her. But how could she find a team with those interests? What sense did that make? And how many senshi did they know? Alexij didn't even know many people, so the odds of him knowing any senshi were non existence. And Keren? She didn't even know Acubens existed, so how was she supposed to know if the girl knew any other senshi?
The idea was absurd and Acubens dismissed it.
As a civilian, nothign ws more important to her than those she loved, but as a senshi? What was she devoted to as a senshi? Recently it had been finding out what she was doing. That seemed to be all she was doing anymore, really. What am I? What do I do? Where do I go? Just endless questions, and each answered question begot even more questions. Just like the one about teams.
But then... that was just it, wasn't it? All Acubens did was try and find answered to questions. Nothing important like information gathering or trying to recruit the Chaos into the Order. But... could there be more like her out there? Was there another group of people just as lost and confused as she? Ganymede said that she could start her own team... would that be a good basis?
The mention of a princess snapped her out of her reverie.
"P-Princess," she stammered, finally registering that he'd spoken about any sort of leader at all. "Princess, we... we have one? There is one? Leaders, we have leaders? Like the DMC has Ares, we have a princess?" Acubens' voice began to rise octaves as she spoke, excitment bubbling up on her stomach. This was the first bit of good news. "So... so wait. We're not all just blindly searching for things, like... we have a leader? A princess, we have one?" The mroe she said it, the more real it seemed to become to her. "Can I meet her? Where is she? Is she still here? What's her name? How do we get to her? Is she accepting visitors? Is she even on earth?"

Ganymede was expecting to continue the course of the conversation as it was, perhaps discussing the moral aspects that came with fighting a war and how those factored in to team building and choice, but it appeared that was not to be. If anything, Acbuens’ had picked the worst point she could have possibly latched onto among everything he’d said to her.
The Super senshi stopped walking to frown and narrow his eyes at her. He tried to keep his voice calm, at least, but he couldn’t help it if the words came out sounding a bit more biting than before.
“No, we do not have a princess,” he replied. “The Zodiacs have a princess. She is not, nor has she ever been, nor will she ever be, my princess or my leader. If you want to meet her, you can find her yourself. I don’t particularly care where she is or what she’s doing. The same goes for the prince, or any other royal that might happen to be out there. We are not the DMC and we are not the Negaverse. If you’re really so weak-willed that you need to subjugate yourself to some magical prince or princess, then you’d be better off turning to Chaos and letting them brainwash you and turn you into another blind sheep.”
He didn’t mean it. Well, maybe he did a little, but that didn’t mean he enjoyed watching other senshi die or fall to corruption, nor did he truly believe that it was because they were always too weak to resist. Some didn't have a choice. But he did feel very strongly against the idea of a universal leader for the side of Order. Fractured the senshi may be as a group, but he was of the opinion that their free-will was their greatest strength. Take that away, and they were really no better than the people they were trying to destroy or save.
“Sorry if that seems harsh, but I’m not doing this for or because of any king or queen or prince or princess or whatever other kind of special snowflake might be prancing around out there. Placing so much importance on them when I can’t even think of a single instance in which having them around has benefited us really minimizes the effort the rest of us are making. There are some amazing senshi and knights out there who’ve put a lot of themselves into this, who didn’t get where they are today because of an outdated concept like royalty.”

To say Micah was shocked would have been an insulting understatement. Just as she had found some hope to latch on to, some small shred of good news, and this other girl, in the most childish fashion of group think misery, decided that since she didn't like the idea of this news, Acubens would suffer with her.
She stopped walking, alongside Ganymede, mouth dropping open as she launched what Acubens saw as an unnecessary offensive against her. Accusations that were too true to really hurt Acubens at all. She’d be lying to herself any everyone else if she said that the Dark Mirror Court wasn’t fast becoming a good idea; hell, the end that all of her means were leading towards. As much as she raged against it, the more it seemed to call out to her.
And now, finally, when she had a solid lead, a real foot hole that she could use to try and keep her balance in the faction that she was awoken into, some little b***h pulled the rug out from under her feet.
Acubens’ own eyes narrowed as Ganymede went on, temper raising the acid in her stomach, making it twist and roll sickly.
“No.” She answered simply as Ganymede finished. “You’re not sorry. I’m sorry means I won’t do it again. Your… argument… was very well rehearsed, so you must have used it before, probably against some other poor, lost senshi.” She took a deep breath, puffing herself up in some instinctual need to look bigger than her opponent.
“And because I want something, because I need something that you seem so utterly against, I get attacked, and basically told to corrupt.” Her lips twitched up in a sad smile. “Maybe, then, we are the ones who are corrupt. Here we are attacking one another before going back to blindly groping around in the darkness. Fight them, convert them, save them, destroy them, we have no set path. And I need that.”
Leave. Get out before you regret what you say.
“I can’t do this. This was a mistake. Good luck in the dark. Maybe my real family will find me a light.” Lesath. Her body cried out for her. Her whole soul wailed for the Dark Mirror Senshi. Her Moth Momma. Come save your Dino Baby. Tell her what she’s doing is right. She could have run away, but she would not flee. She turned on heel, facing away from the other senshi. “I need to go.”

“Sweetie, the only people I’ve said anything like this to before have been the very people we’re talking about,” Ganymede said. He lifted his arms up over his chest in a defensive posture and met her eyes with a look of fearless endurance. “I don’t know how many of them are out there, but the prince and princess I met aren’t the sort of people you want to be flocking to. They care about the past more than they care about the here and now. Just a few months ago they made the choice to preserve a bunch of mirrors rather than doing what was necessary to keep a group of innocent civilians safe. They showed what was important to them then. That’s not the way we need to be operating. Nothing from the past is more important than protecting the people who are alive now. The past is done.”
They were interesting glimpses into another life, the things he saw when he traveled to his moon, but it was nothing to base the present around. There were lives at risk now. There were people in danger. There were multiple threats they needed to be facing and negotiating with, not running around preserving things that no longer had any importance.
“A lost senshi doesn’t bother me,” he continued, keeping his voice as firm and level as possible. “A scared senshi doesn’t bother me. I’ve been there. Hell, I’m probably still there. We’ve all been there, and if someone tries to claim they haven’t, they’re either lying or they’re delusional. Look at us. We’re barely older than kids. You think this is easy for anybody? It’s not. It’s not easy for me, or for you, and I can guarantee it’s not any easier on the other side. That’s not the problem here, Acubens. That’s not what bothers me. What bothers me is that you seem to want a royal solution to this problem, but you know what? If they really had the solution, this war would be over already. It’s not. They are no better than the rest of us, and yet they think they have some sort of power or authority because they have a royal title?”
It stung. Here he was working his a** off to improve, putting as much of himself into this as he had to spare, doing what he could to make the city safer for the people he cared about, and yet all his efforts were ignored or demeaned in favor of people who barely showed their faces? What sort of message did that send to the other senshi just starting out, to the lost and the confused and the so very afraid?
“I don’t want you to corrupt,” he insisted. “I don’t want anyone to corrupt. I don’t want to fight them. I want to negotiate. I don’t want to convert them if they don’t want to be converted, and I don’t want to destroy them, because then we wouldn’t be any better than they are. What I want is peace. What I want for you is for you to learn how to stand on your own two feet instead of relying on some greater power that honestly isn’t all that great to begin with. Is that what you want? Someone to control you? Someone who you’d have to kill for if they told you to? Someone who’d sacrifice you and everything you care about if it would help them reach their goal? Because that’s what you’re going to get if you bend your knee to someone else. Maybe right now you don’t feel like you have a set path as a senshi, but that’s only because you have a choice. You want to fight for some princess? Fine, go fight for her. I won’t like it but I’m also not going to stop you. I hope she treats you well. Or maybe you want to fight for yourself, or for your family, for the people you love? Do it. Right now you have the freedom to choose what you believe and what you fight for. The other side? They don’t get a choice. They get lies and indoctrination into some sort of a bogus royal order that we would do better not to emulate.”
