Sometimes he thought of Em. Sometimes he didn’t. Other times Wilson was too preoccupied doing his best to train and not die. Fortunately, opportunities to meet his untimely demise didn’t come up too often and the winter season had him in unnaturally-high spirits for the past couple weeks, but with Christmas over it was like the end of a sugar rush. He felt for the most part normal, but occasionally he would catch himself longingly staring at the snow or yearning for the holiday decorations that had once filled the hallways. When such sentiments came to pass, he often summoned Gramps in his full form and headed out toward the training fields, just like now.

He walked down the hall, wires dangling and cannons hanging by his side as he adjusted the gas mask over his face. Up ahead, Wilson picked up voices. Once the strap was tightened he peered through the green lens just in time to catch a fleeting glance of the small group. A familiar bob of hair caught his eye. Eyes widened a fraction. His head angled back while the syllable barely left his lips. “Em?” No one probably heard it, especially with the mask covering his face. Wilson reached out for the mysterious hunter, but the reprimanding yell from his weapon sent him running for the training fields. Besides, she had already disappeared behind the door of her room.

But now he was back, fidgeting in front of the room he was pretty confident was hers. Wilson licked his lips as he debated what to do next. Em. Em. He hadn’t thought of her in a while, partially because he was busy and partially because he had never known what happened to her since before he took the examination. Although he was fairly sure he had met her again in the Delta group, he couldn’t say it definitively and it tore him up inside. On one hand she had been there, but on the other hand she could still be sleeping in the pods or worse. Where was she? Where was Emmaline? All this deliberating made the young man glad that no one was here to pass by and watch him stand in front of some girl’s room, raising and dropping his balled fist as he contemplated whether or not to knock.

Gramps broke his thoughts. [Oh for the love of Jack, just knock! You’ve been standing out here for who knows how long.] Wilson even heard an angry snort and neigh. He had almost forgotten that catoblepas were kind of bovine in appearance.

“Okay. Okay! I got it,” he mumbled. Lips tightened into a thin line as he reached out to carefully wrap his knuckles against the door. A moment later his wavering voice added, “Em?”

Emmaline heard the sound of footsteps at her door before the knock, and in the moment of silence before the latter, she tensed up. The worst case scenario would be that it was that black-haired man from the pod room again, and he would be here to tell her that she hadn't actually found the right item, that she had failed again and...

But she went to the door as she heard the knock and then a murmur in a male voice, and opened it slowly, peering slowly around the edge of it.

Her mouth fell open. She stood there for a moment, not knowing what to do. Was it really him? How had he gotten here? He looked a little different, and hair had grown longer since she'd last seen him,... and now that she thought about it, she had no idea how long ago that had been.

"W-wil?" She began lifting a hand to touch his sleeve to verify that he really was there, that it wasn't just her being out of her mind, but dropped it abruptly. This could be a stranger.

Yet she suddenly felt very self conscious about the state of her rumpled clothes and her hair that probably hadn't been washed in weeks, if not months.

As soon as he knocked a wave of questions and problems plagued his thoughts. What if she wasn't there? What if he had gotten the wrong room? What if it wasn’t who Wilson thought she was? Yet they all scattered once the door inched open. It moved slowly so the person inside could peek out cautiously. His lips pursed and he forced himself to stop fidgeting, instead he kept his gaze focused on the woman.

He felt his heart skip a beat as his mind took in the other trainee's appearance. Her eyes were mute purple. Her hair was short, a bit longer than he last remembered, but still short. He looked down, his eyes forming a snaking line as he looked at her slender hands, her white Hunter jacket with the golden clouds that denoted the rare mist trainee. Was it her? The woman certainly looked like Em, but was it her or some doppelganger?

It was the small utterance of his name that did it. Before everything, his friends had opted to call him Wil and he didn't mind, but most of the other trainees chose to use his full name. He was fine with that too. But the name gave him a warm sense of nostalgia and he smiled softly. Wilson reached out for her hand. He whispered the thing he was sure was on her mind because for a while it had been on his too, "I'm Wilson. I'm real. This isn't a dream or whatever." Always so eloquent. Wilson tugged her forward and wrapped her in a tight hug, gently propping his chin on her head. It didn't matter if her clothes dirty or if she smelled because she was finally here and nothing else mattered. "I missed you."

She buried her face into the front of his jacket, the jacket so similar to hers and reminded her of all that she had been through-- and now she realized, he must have gone through the same. How had they both ended up here?

"I missed you too." She pulled away and looked up at him-- he seemed so much... older, now. Taking a step back, she gestured at him to enter the room and went to close the door behind him. And now she braced herself against the door. Her mind blanked, and she wasn't sure what to say. It had been so long.

"How did you get here?"

Once Em pulled back, he reached up to briefly brush her face. She looked so much like how Wilson last remembered her. He followed Em, a hand reaching out to lace his fingers with her. Wilson knew Em wasn’t an overly affectionate person, but she could handle a bit of handholding, right? Especially after so long.

He stopped when he realized Em had propped herself against the door. For a moment, he was confused until he heard her question. “How did I get here?” Memories replayed in his mind, flashing forward until he drudged up the memories of the island examination. His eyes widened slightly—Delta Six. “Where do you want me to start? The examinations or before that?” He reached for his goggles, about to don his mask to jog her memory, but hesitated. It probably wasn’t a very smart idea.

"I-I don't know. I'm not sure if I want to know." Emmaline realized the answer to what she had asked. She could probably assume that he wouldn't want to relive it either. "Nevermind. What matters is that we're here."

She smiled at him and suddenly remembered her manners, as if they were strangers-- and after all, they hadn't met for a very long time-- "Oh! Sit down," she took a quick step across the room and made a motion towards... the bed, since the single chair at the desk was currently occupied by a pile of neatly folded clothing. Well, it was too late now.

"I think I have a general idea of what this place is, but I'm still not sure," she hesitated. "I'm not sure what I should be doing here."

He frowned lightly. “Well, you sort of know how the process works, right? The examinations in masks and golems—artificial bodies that people can control—and then some people wake up and become hunters.” A rare, rueful smile. “Some.” Not everyone woke up. A part of Wilson was grateful he didn’t know all of the candidates. Actually, Em was the only person he knew from before coming to Deus. He had met plenty of new people and made some friends, but having an old, familiar presence was reassuring.

Wilson laughed. “It’s fine, really.” When he sat down on the bed, Wilson lightly tugged at Em’s arm for her to take a seat as well. “You woke up recently, right? What do you know so far? I can fill you in and try to answer any questions you have.”

She took a seat next to him, tucking her hands under her and slowly feeling less self-conscious. As he spoke, she nodded silently. There were parts of this that sounded familiar. He went on explaining all the events that had happened, and at some points she cut in to ask questions-- slowly, the situation came into focus.
"I guess I'm just grateful to have found a familiar face, after all this." She let out a deep breath, and suddenly her stomach let out a grumble. "And I haven't eaten in a while, either..." She flushed red. "Is there somewhere to find food in this building?"

He smiled. “You’re pretty lucky. I didn’t know anyone when I woke up, but it wasn’t too difficult for me to adjust.” His smile turned into a teasing grin. Wilson knew it was easier for him to socialize and make friends than it was for Em. He reached out to grasp her hand tightly before he leaned in to peck her on the cheek. “That’s not surprising. Do you want to go to the kitchen?” He began to stand up and looked back at her, smiling cheekily. “Make sure not to touch anything though, okay? I don’t want you setting things on fire.”

"I think you're underestimating me," Em replied as she slipped her hand into his grasp. She laughed softly, and followed him out of her room into the hallway. There was a good number of people walking around outside-- a few loiterers, a few wanderers, and some who looked very intent and focused on where they were going. She ducked carefully around those, avoiding their path as she followed Wil to wherever they were going.

“I’m just going off of past experience,” he snickered.

He weaved between the few hunters littered around the hallway before Wilson turned around to face Em. Occasionally, as he walked backwards he would look back to avoid oncoming obstacles, but otherwise he spent his time smiling at Em and talking. “I’ve seen your division leader, Aria. She’s pretty serious, but at least she’s willing to tell us things if we ask. She’s definitely better than Caelius or H, in my opinion. I’m envious.”

With familiarity, he casually back-stepped into the cafeteria and pointed a thumb at the kitchen door. “So the kitchen’s there. What do you want to eat? I’ll make it for you.”

At his retort, Em gave him a pout and pulled his sleeve in mock irritation.

"I guess there could be worse fates," she laughed resignedly. "With any hope, I won't be seeing Caelius for a long time. He didn't seem very friendly."

She peered into the kitchen, where a number of people were bustling around the counters and huge cooking implements, and raised her brows at Wil. "Are we allowed in there, really? Shouldn't we just wait for a mealtime..." She trailed off.

He only grinned and leaned forward to place a light kiss on her cheek, but only after Wilson made sure no one else was around.

Lips contorted into a frown upon the mention of his leader’s name. “He’s very unfriendly. Dr. H seems more friendly, but he looks very flirtatious and uh, creepy.”

Usually, the kitchen was empty, but sometimes he would find it occupied just like now. “When it’s empty yeah, but I guess we can check again later.” He looked at Em. “Do you want to stay and wait or do something else? I can show you around if you want.”

Em instinctively jumped a little when his lips touched her cheek, and she flushed red as she glanced around. "Stop that, there could be people around."

"Dr. H? I don't think I've gotten everyone's names down yet. I'll probably meet him somewhere around here eventually, I guess."

For a moment she debated walking into the kitchen and just asking for food, but hesitated. She didn't want to trouble them if they were working...

"Let's just come back later. Can you show me around? I haven't seen much of the grounds."

He frowned childishly. “But I made sure no one else was around!” Wilson insisted. He grinned and felt tempted to lean in for another kiss on the cheek, but decided against it. Instead he gripped her hand even tighter. “He’s got a hood and his jacket is pretty fancy. All the division leaders have fancy jackets, so they shouldn’t be difficult to pick out.”

His face lit up. It was almost like he was going to excitedly jump around and wag his tail—wait he wasn’t a dog. B|a “Sure! So you already know what the labs kind of look like, since that’s where the pods are, and you know the dorms and stuff. So, how about the training grounds? Did you get your weapon yet?”
