It was some time after nine when Taryn arrived back at Amityville. She walked to her dorm room, hunched over and shielding herself against anyone who may have stayed at the school. She wasn't in the mood. The ghoul took a hot shower and changed into new clothes before she plopped down on her couch and heaved a sigh. She produced her phone and texted the only person she wanted to see.

It was nice and vague for the time being.

Roch jerked, moving away from other people slightly to pull out his phone. Huh... she was home already?
> Comin' home now. You back already?
He pushed send and absently sped up, not realizing what he was doing. He had a slightly bad feeling about this, but he wasn't sure why. Taryn had been so happy to be going home, right? Maybe she just wanted to tell him about it.

Oh, thank Jack. She wouldn't be alone much longer. Taryn huffed and buried her face in one of her throw pillows momentarily.

She felt selfish. She was hurt. Her face twisted and her brow furrowed.

Wait, why was he panicking over a simple text? Maybe she had come back early just because things wrapped up early at home. But even as he said that he glanced at the school looming in the distance, wondering if he should shadowstep. It'd be rude, though, so, unless it was an emergency, he would keep walking like he was.

It would be silly to just assume that he'd be willing to spend some time with her. He had probably had a fun day full of family and gifts and might just be to tired. She could wait, she could last the night. Ten minutes, though... she'd better hurry. Feeling doubly stupid, she tucked her phone into her belt and headed to the center of the rug to do just a bit more wrapping.

He pressed send, only realizing how that sounded after it was already sent. Crap, he'd just hit on her. Well... sort of. Oh well, she probably wouldn't catch it, so it didn't matter.

Oh, but she caught it. It just wasn't in the way Roch may have expected, but it still made Taryn blush.

"I ah... gotta go," he told the others before disappearing into the night. It cut off a handful of minutes, and he jogged for three more, then shadowstepped a second time, appearing in front of the monster dorm.
For a second he hesitated, seeing it was pretty late at night, then shrugged and headed inside, not stopping til he was at her dorm room. He tried the knob to see if she'd locked it.

There came no response to that text and once she was finished preparing, Taryn had gone to one of her books. Ten minutes was a long time when you were waiting. The door was in fact locked, but the jiggle of the knob got Taryn to her feet, and after a preliminary peephole peek the door came open. The ghoul might have appeared much more subdued as she sighed, managing a small smile. She pushed her hair behind her ear and blinked sheepishly up at Roch.
"Hey... come in?" The chimera stepped back and allowed room for her friend to enter.

"Hey!" he said, giving her a little grin. It faltered as he saw her expression. "You okay?" he asked as he stepped into the room. He reached back, closing the door behind them before she could. "What happened? You were so happy this morning, I figured you wouldn't be back for days, maybe even a week--"

"It was good for a while," Taryn nodded, going to the coffee table and picking up an immaculately-wrapped gift. She came back to Roch and offered it out. "It didn't end up that way. I'm not sure when I'll go back."

He hesitated, taking the gift, then crossing the room to place it on the table and drop down on the couch. "C'mere," he said, looking comfortable there. "I don't wanna deal with presents and stuff, I wanna hear what happened."
He lounged, his legs spread in front of him, his body tilted slightly so he was leaning against the armrest. "C'mon," he prompted. "You need to talk, right?"

Taryn had never done this. Never before had someone just openly offered to hear her out. Did she want to share? Well, what harm could it do? He wasn't about to go out and kick her Mummy's a**.
When Roch took her gift she sat down to lean in beside him, and then shifted back. Well then...
"Um. I mean, it was nice to see my family. It's been a long time. I thought things were going really well, and then Mana kind of... blew up at me. Said I'd changed."

He frowned, looking at her curiously. "She blew up at you?" he repeated. "I can't say you haven't changed, since I didn't know you before school, but... no, I don't get it," he said, shaking his head. "You're still a good ghoul, through and through, it ain't like you've taken up robbing old ladies on the street and what not..."
He looked thoroughly baffled why anyone could find something wrong with Taryn. "You... haven't been mugging old ladies, have you?" he asked belatedly.

"What? No!" Taryn said abruptly, and Roch had made her laugh. She pulled her legs up onto the couch and fussed with her hair some more. "She said I was different. Worse. That I wasn't studying enough, that I was... I don't know." The ghoul wrapped her arms around her knees. "She made it sound like a bad thing, like friends and hobbies were something to be ashamed of. I don't know what to think."
He didn't have to know that her mummy had raised a hand to her. It would only divert his attention.
