A tide of trolls poured back into the stadium, refreshed, rested, and ready to cheer on whoever was their personal favourite. Already the more entrepreneurial trolls had started small betting booths, and large amounts of money was changing hands. More than a few trolls were now cheering with the nervous, glassy faces of someone who has put down rather more than they should have. It was subtle, but the cheering was slightly more urgent now.

The queen was again stationed in her box, idly lounging in her chair. She spun the microphone around by its cord a few times, then caught it as it swung up, and as her eyes picked up the two figures entering the arena.

"Weeeelcome back to the second rounds, where the winners of the previous battles will duke it out for yourrrrrr entertainment! First off we have orangeblood Aaabrila Variga swinging her shovel versus yellowblooood Aprife Iiiiinvasi the whip wielder!"

Trolls who are watching the battle can post in this thread. While battles are posted ooc all at the same time, ic battles are one after the other. If your troll is in another battle, they can still post as a spectator.

Battlers please post using the shout post style, spectators please post using the whisper post style.

Battlers, remember to roll first, then edit to write your post. Please write at least three sentences each post!

How it happened was still a mystery. Despite how much he had been thinking about it over the recovery period, no ideas came to mind. Of course, considering the distraction that came with the pain of a busted nose and bum knee, maybe it wasn't so surprising. Regardless, his victory in the last round of battles had been a troll hail mary. As he walked into the arena, the trademark grin missing from his features, he knew this had been a bad idea. Signing up for a battle royale when you were built like a twig and had a lusus more likely to give kisses than kicks wasn't the best of ideas. And now, when he sniffed, his nose still stung a bit. At least the bruises on his shoulder, arms, and stomach had faded and his knee supported his weight like it was supposed to.

The sound of the queen's voice droned somewhere outside of his hearing as he came to stand at his side of the field. What she was saying probably wasn't important, just something about how it was time to see another lovely display of normal, societal viole-

It drew out in his mind. As soon as her announcement skipped from opponent's name to opponent's weapon, he was pay attention and paying attention for sure. Aprife's vision was… well, it was almost like it was wobbling as it searched the other side of the enclosure to find out if what had just been said was true after all. And it was. Shovel. Shovel. Fingers loosened around his own weapon and it almost fell to the ground. Luckily, he was able to snap back to attention and snatch it out of the air before making more of a fool of himself. What were the odds of landing another shovel-wielding opponent right after the first? His poor, poor face… it burned with the memory of the hard shot that had nearly knocked him out early. Whyyyyy?

Tsking under his breath, he tightened his grip around the handle of his scourge until his fingers pulsed. No, he told himself, this was not a big deal. There was no time to worry. Just… don't put your face in the way this time. "Let's do thisss," he hissed to himself, a little self-encouragement to get him psyched and going. This chick wasn't Fellah, wasn't an acquaintance, so he had no apprehensions about making the first move. Right? Charging forward, he waited until he was almost on her to dart to the side and swing the whip her direction.

((Forgive the lack of post style, it won't happen again.))

Abrila dragged her shovel along the ground with a yawn as she entered the arena. She really wasn't in the mood for another fight - her face still ached a little from the last one, after all - but she obviously didn't have any choice. The blade of the tool cut a line in the soil, tracing her wobbly path almost perfectly. Yeah, she just wanted to sleep some more. At least the medical drones had let her rest on a cot for a while as they treated her. She suspected she had been a nice change from the more noisy, less cooperative patients. The treatment had helped, too. Her bruises had faded to an ugly brown, but they didn't hurt quite as much anymore.

The orangeblood gazed sleepily at the crowd filling the bleachers, and only half paid attention to the queen as she announced her next opponent. A smarter troll may have paid attention in anticipation for a tougher opponent, but Abrila couldn't bring herself to care about the noise.

Until something whistled by her. She turned away from the sound, both hands gripped on the shovel as she swung it defensively in front of her. But she wasn't quite quick enough. With a snap one of the whip tails struck her on the hand. Immediately she let go with her injured hand and drew it back.

"Oww!" She shouted in pain and surprise, and shook her hand a bit. Abrila forced herself to focus enough to figure out what just happened. It was then she noticed the whip wielding yellowblood, who must have dashed right at her and swung the weapon when she was not paying attention. That thing would hurt if it hit anything important. And here she had thought that guns were the thing to fear in all of this.

Before he could ready the whip for another strike, Abrila lunged forward with her shovel and swung wildly at Aprife. There was no way she was going to stand there and let that thing hit her again.

This was just the beginning, he didn't want to make too many assumptions too quickly. Still, if anything, this troll was quicker to react than his previous opponent. Eyes barely had a chance to widen as the shovel came flying in his direction. No, no, no, no, no. The adrenaline that rushed through his limbs made his fingers tingly. It seemed like Aprife's memory was proving to be more of a hinderance than a help already. If the urge to cover his nose in fear welled up every single time she took a swing, this battle would end faster than it needed to.

Get it together, get it together. In an instant, he let his knees out, dropping to the ground. Pushing with both hands, he flopped to the side and eventually got his feet back under him, half-stumbling to a stand. He had avoided the hit, at least, but his footing was wobbly. It might not have been the best idea, but in the heat of the moment, he hadn't thought of anything else.

Turning on a heel, his swung the whip again, almost twisting his body too far and doing a few step-steps to try and steady his balance. Even with his arm still in the air, he could tell this wasn't going to work out well. Had to get his feet flat again. The try was rather exaggerated and his foot slapped heavily against the ground as he swung it around and down.

Whoosh went Abrila's swing, right over Aprife. The momentum made her do an awkward type of pirouette that spun her around and almost knocked her to the ground. She managed to stay on her feet by going with the movement, and as soon as she could see straight again, she looked around for Aprife. Her wariness of the whip was the only thing urging her on. It took so much effort, though.

Oh, and she was facing the wrong way.

Abrila turned around, holding the shovel in front of her like a shield, despite it's weight. Her muscles stung, but there was no way she was going to leave herself completely open to that whip, even if the shovel offered her a meager amount of protection. She stood with her feet apart and shoulder slouched in her usual, terrible posture.

Aprife hadn't quite gotten his footing back, yet he lashed out with the whip anyways. Abrila cringed and took a step back, waiting for the tails to hit her. But they snapped uselessly away from her.

She couldn't help but let out a little sigh of relief. There wasn't time to linger, though. As much as she wanted to just stand there blissfully motionless, she knew that it would be a bad idea. Maybe she could sneak back into the medical hive later. Yeah, that's what she'd do.

Abrila tried to swing the shovel downwards like an ax, but she was too distracted by her thoughts and it thumped uselessly into the ground beside Aprife, the blade digging into the dirt.

The whole thing had been an awkward display of fumble on both sides, a fact which had been not only the cause of his problems, but also something to be thankful for. By the time he had steadied his footing to the point where he felt comfortable with the idea of something as simple as walking in a straight line, her shovel was already swinging at him, but was angled wrong. The 'woosh' behind the swing was enough to have him sweating bullets, despite the fact that he hadn't even been smacked yet. Now was the time to play smarter, not harder. Aprife did not want to get hit with that shovel, he knew what it was like. A thought struck him as soundly as his opponent's weapon slammed into the ground. Immobilize the shovel, reduce the risk.

Reacting fast--he assumed there wouldn't be much time before she pulled back again--he lifted a foot and stomped once, twice down on the exposed edge of the shovel, trying to dig it further into the dirt. His shoes were rubbery and bent too easily and there was never much weight behind anything he tried to do, but there was no time to stop and see if he had actually succeeded. Gotta keep moving, gotta attack!

Fingers twitched as the whip moved, but not in a way one would expect. Instead, he flipped it so he was holding the tails and the hard plastic handle hung loose, then turned and swung for her stomach. If the attack missed he would probably end up with a bruise on his arm as the handle, not meant to be used this way at all, came flying back in his direction. But this felt solid, much better than his useless flailing from earlier. He chanced allowing the grin to return to his face. It would hit, he was sure of it.

Again, time was up. The gong shook the floor of the arena, throwing a few trolls close to it off their feet and generally making its presence known. Satisfied, the troll in charge of gong duty gently dropped the hammer down and resumed his place in the really engaging book he was reading. It was a real page turner.

Final standings:
Aprife: 15/20
Abrila: 14/20

Aprife moves to the next round!
