Sharsa snorted and pawed at the ground she was annoyed there seemed to be more and more humans around having been ‘chosen’ to bond with horses. It was tougher and tougher to find a horse that didn’t have their whole perspective skewed by that stupid bond. They were all so annoying! Still she smiled and acted nice and put up with them as long as such relationships benefited her. “Stupid lot, they’re nothing but sheep for that play king.” Tossing her head made the metal on her collar clink loudly but Sharsa didn’t figure on being noticed. After all she was just an unbounded horse, who paid attention to her type? She kept on walking toward the human village to filch some food from unsuspecting and weak humans. Even if she were caught she’d just bat her eyes and plead that she was unbounded and never saw such treats and simply couldn’t help herself. She’d done it before and never had a problem getting away with it. It would be amusing and she’d get something sweet to eat as a bonus.

Dome Menel Alu-lote shifted her wings as her human lifted the last sack off her back. With that done the pegihorn watched as Reoakee lumbered into the shop dragging the sack behind her. Reo had her little shop that sold books and other little things here and there. The place never had any real flux of customers, but that never stopped Reo from scrapping by. How her human ever sold anything when her face was always stuffed into a book was beyond Alu-lote. Still seeing Reo smiling after a good day of sales was worth any work Alu-lote had to do to help her human out. She shook her head making her long mane look like it was shimmering. Reo would be busy for the rest of the day so Alu-lote decided to mill about and see what was going on in the busier section of the market closer to the center of the village.

The noises and the smells of the market were painful to Sharsa’s ears. Still the three apples and crème puff were settling well in her belly. Leaning over she grabbed a piece of bread out a humans side satchel. It was soft and tasted vaguely like potatoes. Taking her newest ill gotten gain off to one of the quieter little alleys Sharsa flipped the bread in the air once and then settled down to eat. It wasn’t long until she polished off the bread and Sharsa was ready to find her next mark. Stepping out of the alley she nearly ran into a mare that just appeared out of no where. “Oi!” Sharsa quickly backpettled with a loud neigh. She wanted to snap and call the horse that cut her off a damn fool. Barely managing to bite back her comments Sharsa pasted on a fake surprised and innocent look. The horse before her didn’t look like some lowborn trash. She was sparkling and clearly well groomed. Perhaps this mare could be of some use.

Pulling up with a snort Alu-lote blinked at the horse she had almost walked into. My apologies miss, I did not realize anyone would be coming out of the.. After a quick look at where the white and gold mare was coming from Alu-lote was certain. alley. Stepping aside the pegihorn smiled at the mare trying to be polite. She looked healthy enough but there were some mats in her mane so perhaps her chosen wasnt paying much attention to her lately, or perhaps she had none at all. Alu-lote couldnt even imagine life without the bond, still not all Azrein wanted it. She thought about it for a moment. Perhaps if youll let me Ill treat you to a small snack as my way of apologizing. Would this be alright to you? She shifted a wing off toward the marketplace. She was sure that there must be something in the marketplace that would catch the mares eye and make her feel better.

A free snack? Oh yeah! “That’s kind of you to offer. I’ll take you up on that. O-only if it’s not too much of a bother.” And see if I’ll she how useful knowing you will be.. “I’m sorry for yelling out before, you just surprised me.” Lowering her head Sharsa kept her voice low and seemingly meek. She even looked up at what she viewed was a horned freak through her mane and manage to fake being near tears. She was feeling smug in her acting. Few could resist a sad and pathetic looking Azerein. Who knows the feather-brain might get her something even nicer out of pity. Maybe Sharsa could make this mare a solid mark and keep coming back a few times a year and get lots and lots of free meals with nothing more than a whimper and hello. Not a bad deal really.

Nodding Alu-lote started off at a slow trot not wanting to make the other mare feel pressured at all. Who knew what such a shy and timid little Azrein had been through? The girl even seemed on the verge of tears! Alu-lote didnt like to see others cry or upset at all. So she decided to get things done and curb the weeping. First food, second a bit of pampering, third moving on and letting go. It was simple and usually worked. Alu headed to a vender that knew her owner Reo and would be willing to give Alu-lote and her companion some bags and grain and probably some sugar cubes since Reo would pay the man back later. It wasnt the first time Alu-lote used this arrangement, but she made sure never to abuse her privilege with the system she had in place. Now then. If you dont mind me asking what is your name? Keeping her voice calmly pitched she used a wing to nudge the wingless mare softly. The poor dear clearly needed a friend.

Her eyes widening at the wing tap Sharsa resisted the urge to bite the wench. How dare this over groomed sparkled trollup touch her! “Sharsa. W-what about you?” Calm. Meek, these were things that kept other Azrein giving her things and expecting nothing in return. If she snapped and blew her cover then who knows what kind of valuable information sources she could lose, not to mention free meals and bedding spots. Staying warm and away from danger was one of the few things the stupid humans did right. Pity the azrein that where bonded seemed to lose their minds and think that being chained to the humans was worth the cost of their freedom. Mentally sighing Sharsa watched the man start filling a feed bag smiling as soon as he saw the winged azrein next to her. How well knows was this mare here? If she were a local perhaps Sharsa could ask to sleep where ever this wench’s home was. She might even get a free grooming out of the deal.

Watching Sharsa out of the corner of her eye she noticed the white mare watching the man fill the feed bags. Had Sharsa been hurting for food? She didnt seem too thin, but she was on the skinny side. And where those some crumbs around her mouth? She had been eating recently? How had she gotten the food? Alu-lote vaguely wondered if she were walking with a thief. Perhaps she shouldnt help the other azrein out? No that was definitely wrong. Alu-lote decided she should help because if she didnt who would. Dome Menel Alu-lote, though most call me Alu-lote. Her short tail swished, well more like twitched while she thought. She was running down a list of possible people who might be willing to help Sharsa out. If enough people and arzein got together then perhaps the whole village could more or less adopt Sharsa and the mare might find a place to live and way to keep food in her belly, and a roof over her head. Tell me where is it youre currently living Sharsa. It seems strange that Ive never seen you here before. I know I havent lived in this area very long, so I suppose we could have simply missed one another before this.

“no where” Ug what was it about playing all meek and mild that made everyone want to hear a sad and tragic story? Sharsa figured that was what Alu-looser wanted since the other mare kept speaking slowly and softly like she was talking to a traumatized rabbit. It was annoying and infuriating. How could anyone find comfort in that kind of weakness? “Well you see. I’ve always grown up alone, my mother died when I was young and I never knew who fathered me.” A little well placed sniffle made this story oh so much sadder, at least Sharsa always thought so. “I’ve been alone ever since. There was one time I though I found a human I could bond with.. b-but it seemed as though she was always watching other Azrein and never noticed me.” The bitterness in Sharsa’s tone was real. She would never bond with a human that would just end up watching other Azrein and drooling over them! It would be shameful to be shown up by some other azrein, and even worse what if the human was unfaithful and bonded to another azrein too! No Sharsa would never bond with those weak willed parasites.

While Alu-lote contemplated the horrid story she had just heard she took the feed bag from the vender with a nod of appreciation. She then started trotting away from the man away from the hustle and bustle of the marketplace. Sharsa followed her with a low head and stayed close. Alu-lote feared that perhaps Sharsa was in more pain than she let on. So Alu-lote took Sharsa to one of her favorite spots. It was a small little herb, flower, and vegetable garden her chosen grew behind their home. There were a few fruit trees, though sadly the picking had been done earlier in the day so only the unripened fruit was still on the trees. Here this is a safe place. Here is that snack I promised you. Im afraid my chosen is away at her shop, but I know shed be happy to have you here too. Feel free to stay and eat and rest for a bit. I cannot even imagine how painful your life has been, but I wish to assure you arent alone Sharsa. Im certain there is someone out there for you just waiting to meet you. With that said Alu-lote slide a wing over Sharsa for a quick squeeze before heading off to where Reo kept the grooming brushes. Perhaps if she could get Sharsa to look at the positive things in life she might have a chance to find out what kind of skills Sharsa had and perhaps that would help Alu-lote figure out how to best help the white mare.

Not alone? What a load of manure. They were all alone. Only the brainwashed idiots that were bonded thought otherwise. Still the place was decent enough. Definitely not a noble’s home so Sharsa didn’t think Alu-lote would be of as much use as she originally figured. Still a good meal and decent place to sleep wasn’t something to scoff at. No.. this required a different tact than the in and out gossip girl style she’d use on a noble.. mm perhaps the ‘I’ll cling to you my only friend’ view might let her come and go with ease from this place at all hours of the day. As she watched Alu-lote walk off she nodded to herself and allowed a smile to slip in as she dug into the oats. To her surprise there were a few sugar cubes mixed in. Dang the horn-head must be liked by that vender. Greedidly muching away Sharsa almost missed the soft clicking of the winged azrein’s return. She froze momentarily as she noticed the first noise so close to her. She put on that sad/pathetic face she used earlier and looked up at Alu-lote again. The face didn’t last long as she noticed the horned mare had a grooming brush in her mouth. This azrein was actually going to groom her? Sharsa grimaced internally. She hated being touched by those she didn’t trust, and she didn’t trust anyone. Still she surmised this was a great way to set her plan into action. “um.. miss Dom menal al-lo.. oh darn… Miss Alu-lote?”

Alu-lote had visibly flinched to hear her name slaughtered in such a manner still she forgave Sharsa right away. Her name really was a mouthful. How anyone could remember all of it always seemed to surprise Alu-lote. Yesf whaf iz is it Sharseh? She sighed and set the brush down before looking at Sharsa once more. Here, Ill brush out your hair and you can keep on doing exactly what youre doing right now alright? Id be happy to help you as soon as you finish your meal alright? As soon as Sharsa gave a nod of consent Alu-lote lifted the brush in her mouth once again. After a moment to shift it into a comfortable position in her mouth she started to gently brush Sharsas side. She listened carefully as Sharsa spoke never the less.

Sharsa knew she had a sucker on the line as soon as she got away with massacring the featherbrain’s name. “Well, you see you’ve been so nice to me, even now you’re taking such good care of me.” A blush crept up on Sharsa’s face, though in truth it was more her embarrassment for the tone she just discovered she could use. It sounded so lost, so perfect. “I know everyone else calls you Alu-lote, but would it be ok if I called you Menel? I-I understand if you don’t want me to since it’s not what you’re used to, it’s just I ….” Sharsa let the statement go unfinished while she finished it her mind with ‘think you’re a fool.’ She went back to eating her food while she let Alu-lote set down the brush to answer. After all the wench did say for her to keep doing what she was doing. No sense in letting food go to waste.

Just hearing Sharsa speak was heart wrenching enough, but, to hear her so shy on such a simple request? It was enough to make Alu-lote want to scold anyone who gave Sharsa such a hard time. Of course. Id be happy to have you call me Menel. Itll be something just between us alright? Alu-lote gave Sharsa a warm smile. Perhaps now was the time to break her planning quietly. Sharsa would have some say in what she wanted or didnt want to do right? Who wouldnt? You know I know a few people here around here. Perhaps if youd like we can see if anyone would be willing to let you work for them in exchange for a roof over your head and food. Seeing Sharsa tense up she hastily added. You dont have to be bonded you know. This would just be a work thing. I understand if youre not ready for that kind of thing yet, but please at least think it over. I was trying to come up with a gentler way to break the offer to you, but I fear I couldnt. Im sorry. I just wanted to let you know that you dont have to keep on not having a home. Oh she botched this up, she just knew it.

Sharsa had been silently laughing to herself. Alu-lote was making this too easy for her! The fool even said that this was something just between them? How much more friend-ish could she get? When Alu-lote mentioned having Sharsa work for food and board the white mare nearly choked. Thankfully Alu-lote seemed to attribute it to being shy or scared. Taking a moment to compose herself Sharsa looked up at Alu-lote. She shifted her weight and tapped a hoof on the ground, being of course the very picture of uncertainty. “I don’t know. I-I’ll think about it though.” Did this mean Alu-lote was going to just kick her out? Had she misread the other mare so? She was sure this was the kind of arzein that would keep on bringing her things and let her stay around as long as she didn’t make a ‘nuisance’ of herself by taking too much at once or staying to long. Sharsa plan to come back every few months and milk Alu-lote and her chosen crumbled before her in her mind. Perhaps if she had offered to share the snack brought, it would have been a more believable pitch of being a sad and pathetic but worth being nice to kind of azrein. Was that where she went wrong?
