((OOC: Oh gawd, should have logged this a time time ago))
It was kind of late.
All her family was in bed, sleeping at this time, because they were all rather early risers. Usually she was too, but tonight, Hel just couldn’t go to sleep as quickly as she normally could. Being home…it was different now. Too different. Possibly even on the verge of being…unsettling. It felt too far removed from the Academy and all the events surrounding it…but a request to return home was a request, and she heeded it.
The reaper found herself out in the den, half flopped on the fur couch with her feet dangling over an arm carelessly. She just couldn’t stand being in her room, in her bed with her other sisters right now. Seeing Freya’s empty bed as well, and knowing she was back at the Academy still had the younger ghoul feeling a bit jealous. Always envious of the older sister, never not. Hel sighed as she stared at the ceiling, when a thought came to mind. Hey…someone was still probably up…hmm…miraculously she just so happened to have her phone on her…why? Who knew. Maybe subconsciously she’d hope she’d get a text or something, so she clung to it.
Hel flipped her phone open and started a text: ‘I think I’d be rich if I bet seeds that you were still up!’. She sent to the text off to Mot, and then stared at her phone eagerly.
True to his habits, Mot was awake at an unreasonable hour. It was never for a lack of trying. He really was tired. But insomnia once again reared its unwanted presence, leaving the boil laid out on his bed and staring at his eyephone game, his thumbs pressing away at the buttons. The eerie glow of his phone was all that kept the room alight. The sounds of beeps and such was the only sound to be heard, aside from an occasional yawn.
His game paused upon receiving a text. The reaper smirked lightly, replying back; “Who would be dumb enough to think I was asleep?” He typed back.
Eeeee!
Hel was just grinning from ear to ear now when her phone buzzed in her awaiting hands, and the ghoul rolled onto her stomach as she flipped open the phone. She chuckled to herself, replying: “It’s called wishful thinking! I hoped that maybe you were, because you need it, but the reality of the situation worked in my favor.”
On second thought, what was Hel doing awake? Not that he minded, really. He felt better having the company, even if it was via text message. Being kept awake wasn't so bad now.
“How so? What are you even doing awake?” He replied back, not bothering to return to his game. In fact, he sat up and leaned over his bed to flick his lamp on. If he was up, he was up.
Heh, he knew of her usual sleep patterns well enough, so she wasn’t surprised to be questioned about being up. Hel chuckled lightly to herself again as she rolled onto her back once more, swinging her feet back and forth off of the couch as she kept on grinning. “Can’t sleep either. Being home isn’t the same anymore, so I’m in the den, and I decided to text you! How is your visit?”
Home wasn't the same? Yeah, he could sympathize to a point. But then again he never did feel 'comfortable' at home. It did have its charm, but it was always very very subtle. One thing that made it wonderful was his first day back. His talk with his mother. The fact he now knew for certain that she was proud of him.
He smiled fondly.
“It's okay. I told my mother about my exam. She is proud. How is your family?”
Ooh…speaking of his mother…that reminded her!
“I’m glad to hear it! How did she take it about your hat? My family is well. Same as always.” Hel sent off the text and waited, swinging her feet some more. Hmm…at the rate they were going…maybe she should just call him soon?
It was strange. Mot thought for sure the more his hat was mentioned, the more it would hurt. Yet, now as he read this new text, he didn't feel sad anymore. His old hat had been packed away into a closet, since he really couldn't being himself to throw it away. Still, it no longer hurt. “She didn't seem to mind.” He texted back.
He paused then, rolling his eyes. Why was he having a full conversation through text messages? His eyes turned to the door. His mother must be sleeping, and he didn't want to disturb her. If he went downstairs, his voice might carry over into his father's basement and disturb his work...
...Mot got up and headed downstairs into the living room, dialing Hel's number as he did.
Hel was rather surprised by that text. She didn’t mind, huh? That was good, right? The reaper hummed softly to herself, thinking of that she wanted to address next, when her phone started to ring. “Ah!” Hel dropped her phone, staring at it wide eyed before glancing around. A few snores. It was a good thing her house was full very terribly heavy sleepers. The ghoul let herself blush from embarrassment as she picked her phone back up, giggling softly at seeing it was Mot calling, and flipped it open to answer.
“I was actually thinking of doing the same ~ You beat me to the draw.”
Mot chuckled at her response, grinning ear to ear. He'd missed her voice in the short time they'd been away. “It's my specialty, after all.” Mot joked, flopping down onto his couch ungracefully. He also did so because the sound caused by the sudden weight on the couch would certainly make the downstairs tenant miserable.
“I just figured it would be ridiculous to carry on a full conversation via text messages. Oh, this doesn't bother you, does it?”
Hel rolled onto her back on her couch once more, grinning from ear to ear as well once she heard his voice. “That it is, friend!” She paused. “Bother me? Bah, not at all! Like I said, the thought had crossed my mind. Ah, speaking of, I had something to ask as well! I find it rather odd, but I am going through a growth spurt right now, and it hasn’t been that long since we left Amity! How about you?”

Growth spurt? Well, they were both still young, so that was to be expected, right? “What, you going to be tall enough to be face to face with the second button of my shirts now?” Mot teased, scuffing the heel of his socks against the floor, occasionally thumping it Yes, he was trying to be obnoxious. Not like his father gave a s**t enough to come upstairs anyway. The young reaper took full advantage.
“Nah, as far as I can tell I'm not growing anymore.” Suited him fine. He really didn't need to be as tall as his crazy father. Then he'd have to hear from relatives even more about how much alike they were. He didn't care to know that. “Guess you're just really weird, Hel. Geez. Way to be weird.”
Hel snorted at the tease. “Maybe.” She shot back, keeping her voice a bit low despite how hard it was to wake everyone at her house. “I come home, and I am here for some time, and then the next thing I know, all my tunic tops are starting to feel tight, as well as my bloomer bottoms! Mama has acquired some new clothes for me now.” The ghoul squealed a bit, excitedly.
“Mot, I have never gotten new clothes from my mother before! It has always been hand me downs, but not this time!” Hel ran a hand over the new tunic sleep top she was wearing right now, and then scoffed when he called her weird. “That’s the pot calling the kettle black, cowboil.”
Wow. Sounded like Hel was eating one too many home cooked meals! Was he going to meet Hel again riding in a wheel barrel? He didn’t wish to say anything lest he sound insensitive.
"Never had new clothes?" He asked curiously. With so many sisters, he should have figured clothing would be hard to come by unless it was handed down. Expensive. "That must be nice, then. My mother ended up having to get me a whole new wardrobe when I was 15 because I grew so much in a short few months."
Mot was quiet. Too quiet. Wasn’t he going to say something more about her odd growth spurt? Oh wait…did he think? Hel quickly back tracked. “I didn’t get fat!” She cried out, waving her hands in a bit of a panic, despite that Mot couldn’t see it. She scowled a bit then. “That’s what Roch asked too, when I told him!”
She made a face. “Yes, I have never had new clothes…and it’s very nice!” She listened to him, and chuckled. “Grew like a weed, eh? Think you’re going to grow more?” He was pretty tall as it was!
Mot blushed, rubbing his cheek with a free hand. Oops. His silence spoke louder than words. "S-sorry!" He apologized with a nervous chuckle. "Not that it would be a problem, it was simply my first thought." He paused laughing a bit. "Ah, Roch. He's a blunt one." That's what made him Roch, though.
"I don't think so? I don't have the pains like I did then." He mused, then realizing he hadn't made much noise aside from talking in a while. He kicked the floor with a heel. Satisfied. At this point his father might have been sleeping like a corpse anyway, but Mot felt the need to attempt to be a pest anyway.
“It was your first thought!?” Hel scowled again before slapping a hand over her mouth. Once again, more snores. Yeah, everyone slept like logs in this house. “Well, now that you know I didn’t get fat, what’s your next thought as to what grew, eh?”
Hel chuckled a bit. “Heh…I suppose it’s not like you need to get taller, anyways. I like the view of the buttons I have now, thank you very much.”
Oops. He'd offended her. He stammered another row of apologies before pausing and humming thoughtfully. "Your.. uh.. height?" Mot was dense.
Mot snorted, which turned into a short chuckle. "I bedazzle those buttons just for you." He joked.
The reaper was amused by his row of apologies, snorting softly. “My height? A bit, I suppose, nothing too much worth to note…” She grinned now, despite the fact he couldn’t see it. “But my bust sure did!” Yes, she was rather proud and no, she didn’t care if Mot wanted to hear it or not. Hel snorted again as well. “Bedazzle them? Just for me? I am honored! I think you should bedazzle your chaps while you’re at it as well.”
The ghoul paused, glancing at the grandfather clock in the den before snapping her fingers. “Oh! I called with a purpose! Mot, are you in your bed right now? If not, you need to get there.”
Bust----Mot blushed a furious shade of red, suddenly thankful for the fact he was on the phone. He...he'd actually pictured it. Oh Jack... "A-ah.. I see.." Was he looking forward to seeing Hel's chest---HEL he was looking forward to seeing HEL.
"My chaps are fine as is." He insisted with an amused laugh.
Mot leaned forward, rubbing his neck as she asked him something. "No? Oh, sure?" Mot raised a brow, getting up from the lone sofa and trotting up the stairs. "Not yet... nooot yet.." A click and soft shutting of the door. "Ok, in my room now. What is it?"
“No, you don’t see, but you will soon!” Hel cooed, laughing softly.
The reaper waited, swinging her feet back and forth as Mot informed her of his whereabouts in his house. “Oh, okay, you need to get in your bed now. Tuck yourself in, alright? I would if I was there.” She teased, “But I’m not. So get in bed and get comfy. Rest your weary head on the pillow.”
Mot was feeling slightly nervous now. Why was she telling him to get cozy in bed? "Um.. okay? But, I can't sleep so.." He at least laid himself down on the bed, halfheartedly kicking the covers around so they sort of covered his legs. "Doooone."
“We’re going to try and do something about that.”
Hel waited a moment, as Mot was hopefully getting into his bed, and once he announced he was done, she smiled. “…Alright. I’m going to sing you to sleep. Hopefully.” She chuckled softly. “…Keep the phone to your ear…after I finish the song, I will wait nine seconds…and if I do not hear a response from you, I will hang up, alright?”

Ah, so that was her plan? Honestly, he should have known. This wasn't the first time she had sang him a lullaby, and somehow, it usually worked, or at least made him less restless. Both were good.
"Oh, okay." Mot smiled, lifting his blanket to cover more of himself and rested on his side. "Ready."
Hel waited for a moment once more, until he said he was ready, and then took another moment to pick a song. So many choices! Eventually she settled on another one of her favorites that was slow and soothing. She took a soft breath before starting:
“The island bathes in the moon's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history~”
The moment Hel began to sing, Mot started relaxing. Somehow, his heart felt like it wanted to beat faster, yet the soothing lyrics and melody kept it steady. He rested his head further into the pillow, his eyes focusing on moonbeams coming through his window for now. He wasn't sleepy enough to close his eyes just yet.
Hel was staring up at the wooden beams in the ceiling as she sang, watching the shadows that danced from the remains of a fire.
“Fleeting memories rise From the shadows of my mind Sing "nonomori" - endless corridors Say "nonomori" - hopeless warriors You were there You were there
Am I forever dreaming How to define the way I'm feeling~”
His eyes lidded slightly, not yet feeling the pang of sleep come around. Relaxed and content, but not sleepy. She'd only just begun, though.
He shifted a little in place, concentrating on lyrics and moonbeams. Hel really did have an amazing voice, and it never failed to comfort. Maybe one day he would sing something with her, and not just wait for her voice to lull him to sleep.
She really enjoyed singing to Mot. She couldn’t explain it exactly…but there was a great joy she got out of it. While the valkyrie wasn’t shy about singing in front of anyone…the cowboil was the only one she purposely sought out to sing for.
“You were there Countless visions they haunt me in my sleep You were there Though forgotten all promises we keep
Slaves to our destiny I recall a melody Sing "nonomori" - seasons lit with gold Say "nonomori" - legends yet untold You were there You were there~”
Mot slowly blinked as the song went on. Each time he did, his eyes stayed closed longer than the previous time. He felt himself go a bit sluggish, his grip loosening on the phone in hand. He let it slip beside him, lazily turning up the volume so he could listen from where he was.
The phone sat in front of him, Hel's voice radiating from the device. Mot was having trouble keeping his eyes open.
Hel was getting close to the end of the song. She sure hoped he was either asleep, or close to getting there!
“Happiness follows sorrow Only believing in tomorrow
You were there Countless visions they haunt me in my sleep You were there Though forgotten all promises we keep~”
Mot never heard the last few lines of the song. It had all melded into darkness and distant echoes before the Reaper fell to slumber. A very light slumber, as was normal for him. But at least now he was indeed resting.
And whispers directed at the boil would be met with silence.
“The island bathes in the moon's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole key to this mystery~”
Hel finished the song, and true to her word, fell silent as she listened for any indication that Mot was still awake. Nothing. Okay…so Hel fibbed a bit. She stayed on longer than nine seconds after the song was finished, just listening for anything…but after a minute of silence went by, she deemed it was probably time to hang up, no matter how reluctant she was to do so.
“…Good night Mot…sweet dreams.” She murmured before pulled the phone away from her ear and quietly flipping it shut. Mission accomplished.
