Candice looked at her phone as she walked down the street. On the screen of the phone was a media text message of a picture of a cute, fluffy, white puppy. Even before disappearing into the Surrounding, she had made a request at a pet store to tell her when her dream puppy would be in. Specifically, it was a little girl American Eskimo puppy, one that was energetic in any way and willing to play. When she had gotten the text message the evening of the previous night, she was more than excited!

All of the excitement that was inside of her caused her to miss out in a lot of her surroundings. She had stepped in knee deep snow on accident. She had almost crossed the street with the cars still coming. Overall, she was just staring at her phone, ready to pick up little Cotton.

With being unable to focus on anything else but her phone, Candice also passed by where her friend Jett was working. She hadn't known, nor seen, that the pet shop that she was going to was next door to that of Jett's place of employment. Candice had walked by the Antique store window and stared into that of the pet store, her little Cotton playing in the front box with one of her siblings.

Candice was completely giddy with excitement. "Finally... The wait is over!"

For every bit as unobservant as Candice was, Jett was just the opposite. He’d been watching people pass by out the window out of boredom; it was another lazy day. Not that he minded, of course—he’d rather have an empty store than a full one. Which wasn’t really good for business, but he wasn’t worried about losing his job or anything; the store made more than enough money to stay afloat and showed no signs of going anywhere.

When he spotted Candice, he at first was a bit confused, so hopped off the stool behind the desk and slid on his jacket as he walked to the front door. From the angle of the windows he could see her outside the pet store. Calling to his boss that he was taking a fifteen minute break, he was greeted with a grunt and then stepped outside.

“Hey, Candice,” he said, shuffling towards her through the snow. He was familiar with the pet store—it was where he had gotten Raven’s dog. It didn’t take long for him to reach her; his eyes drifted to the fluffy white furball in the window. “…You’re in the market for a dog?” he prompted.

Candice was surprised when she heard Jett's familiar voice. She looked over at him and smiled. "Hi Jett! It's a surprise seeing you here." Before saying anymore to Jett, she looked at the little puppy again. The bundle of fur was staring at her hand as she moved it up and down the glass, side to side. It soon started to follow her hand and pounce randomly.

She let out a laugh and looked back at Jett. "I don't know what counts as 'in the market', but I've waited for this little fella for a few months now. Even before the surrounding, I had called the pet store telling them what I wanted, gender and personality wise."

The little dog let out a small bark as Candice looked back at it. "She's the dog I've always wanted... Are you busy, Jett? If not... You're very much free to meet my little one with me! I think it would be fun!"

It was easy to tell that Candice was shaking with excitement as she stared into the window. It didn't take long for the store owner to walk out and greet her, instantly knowing that Candice was going to be the new owner of the white fluff ball.

Jett seemed a bit surprised given how excited Candice seemed to be about the dog; he looked at the white fluff ball, clearly not as impressed with it as Candice was. It wasn’t that Jett didn’t like dogs—quite the contrary, he was very much a dog person. But he couldn’t understand picking out a dog before ever meeting it. He assumed that when picking out an animal, it should click between both pet and owner.

Oh well, to each his own.

Jett followed Candice into the pet shop after the store owner came to collect her; Jett exchanged a few words with the owner, who recognized him from when he purchased Raven’s puppy. The words were brief—a phone call pulled the owner from their side, leaving Jett and Candice alone to meet her little white fluffball. “So,” Jett asked as they approached the pen the dog was in, “How old is she, what are you going to name her?”

His eyes were wandering to the other puppies, the rowdy little one wrestling in another pen, the tired little puppies that had already worn themselves out and were sleeping. A small smile graced his face; he’d long since humored the idea of getting a dog, though his mother had often protested that they had neither the time nor resources to tend to a new puppy.

It didn’t stop Jett from humoring the idea, though, even if he wouldn’t act upon it. He left Candice to her own dog, though slipped his hand into the pen with a few Labrador looking puppies; he stroked the top of the head of a sleepy looking puppy, amused when its tail thumped wildly and it nuzzled into his hand.

Candice's face just couldn't help but keep a smile on. Her face was literally glowing... Beaming even. The wait wasn't that long. Well, anticipation made the time seem to pass by slower, but once Candice was face to face with her little one, it seemed well worth it. "The pet store owner called me about 8 weeks ago saying that one of the breeding kennels had American Eskimo puppies. I'd guess around that time, mostly because they didn't send her until the could see the personalities of the puppies showing."

She picked up the puppy and held her up in the air. The puppy wagged her tail and gave Candice a lick on the nose. "She's so cute," Candice said somewhat under her breath. "You seem like the perfect little girl. Definitely going to be spoiled rotten!"

Candice brought the puppy back to her arms and cuddled her close to her arms. "Isn't she just fluffy? I fell in love with American Eskimos when I first discovered them while browsing the Internet..." She kind of trailed on as she thought of the list of names that she had come up with before.

When the puppy gave her a lick on the hand without being shy at all. Candice smiled as she watched her and then gasped as she came up with a name that fit. Holding the puppy up to Jett's face, Candice spoke again. "Wouldn't she just make THE perfect 'Cotton'?"

The puppy barked after hearing the name and reached forward to lick Jett's cheek. "I think she likes you too," Candice said with a giggle.

Jett doubted he really needed to make any commentary on Candice’s monologue; she seemed happy enough to talk to herself and gush over her new dog. He didn’t blame her; since he was a boy he’d always wanted a dog, though there always seemed to be some sort of restriction or reasoning against it. Now, it was just a thought he fancy though a desire he never pursued.

He himself was more pleased with the sleepy puppy currently lavishing his hand with slobber than the overexcited fluffball spitting all over his face, though he held no ill-will against the dog he supposed was going to be called Cotton. Both she and Candice seemed attached to the name and he was inclined to agree—the little American Eskimo did seem to make for the perfect ‘Cotton’.

“Ah, that’s just what dogs do,” he said with a very light laugh as he leaned away from Cotton and used his free hand to mop up his face. “They like anyone who gets close enough. Especially at this age. She’s got a lot of energy, looks like she’ll be a handful.”

But a lot of fun, too, he warranted.

Jett’s eyes drifted down to the puppy that was trying to fall asleep on him. For as much life as Jett possessed, he found himself inclined to favor that little pup as opposed to Candice's, though perhaps it had little to do with personality and more to do with the fact that Cotton already had a home and he sympathized with the snuggly little puppy still up for grabs.

He didn’t want to withdraw his hand, though neither did he want this dog to crack through his hard exterior and work its way into his heart. He withdrew his hand from the pen after giving the Labrador one last tiny little pet on the head. Wiping his hands off on the side of his pants, Jett glanced up at Candice and her dog. “But, then again. You too look like you’ll make a good match,” he added with a smile.

Candice giggled at Jett's comment on Cotton's energy. She knew that there was very much a good reason for there to be a lot of energy. "I'm hoping that her energy drags me out the door more. I know school is important, but hopefully with Cotton's help, making sometime for myself to do things I want to do might just come easier."

She brought Cotton back into her arms as the puppy tried to continued to lick Candice's face. The puppy backed down just enough to let Candice watch Jett and him play with the Labrador puppy for just a little while. When Jett turned back towards her, Candice had a warm smile on her face. "Thank you, Jett. Hm... Do you think maybe you'd think about getting a dog too?"

"It seems like you were quite fond of the Labrador pup." Candice knew that a dog was a lot to handle, but of course, she half hoped that Jett would be able to give another puppy a home. It was hard for her to get out of pet stores because sometimes she wanted to take all the fluffballs home. Even worse, she had visited an animal rescue place once, and it took Candice a long time to get out of there.

Jett was, in fact, very fond of the little Labrador, though the logical side of him told him quite plainly that there was no way for him to take a dog home. Financially, he probably could have supported it. There had been a time in his life where’d never have been able to consider owning and affording a dog, however with his mother working herself to death and the wages he’d been raking in for years, it was feasible at the very least.

But, his mother was afraid of dogs, and Jett would never do anything to discomfort her. “I like dogs,” he confessed, glancing back to the puppy that had offered as light whimper before clumsily pawing his way over to his siblings and flopping down next to one of them to continue his nap.

“If I was going to get one, though, it’d be from a shelter. Now’s just…not a good time in my life for a dog, though. What with work and school,” and serving in the Dark Mirror Court, “it’s been kind of hectic. Not fair to a small animal that needs someone around to train and love him. Maybe someday, though. I always wanted a dog.” Jett shrugged, mostly to himself; there was a bit of remorse in his voice. “Guess I just don’t want to fall into the same trend as everyone else. Seems like everyone’s getting a dog these days. I got Raven one. Ugly little b*****d, but it’s the type she wanted and she thinks it’s the cutest damn thing in the world, so.”

He flashed a smile to Candice. “As long as she’s happy, right?”

"Haha," Candice laughed as she cuddled Cotton some more. "I think all dogs are adorable.. Even those ones with the so-called 'ugly' faces." The girl stuck her tongue out at Jett as she walked around the store, picking out different toys for Cotton. She even managed to find a soft, baby-blue and pastel-pink collar with a matching leash for the puppy. Once the collar was on Cotton, Candice put her on the ground to explore a bit. "Though I do have to say, shelter dogs are awesome on their own. Not a lot of puppies, but the older ones are so sweet!"

Candice made her way around the store, picking up treats and dog food on her way to the counter where she smiled at the old man that ran the store. Once she paid, she thanked the old man with a huge smile and a half hug, the other hand holding Cotton's leash. The little puppy tugged, wanting to go outside. Candice laughed and spoke again to Jett. "Well, I think that's everything!'

Her arms were full with a thick bag for the dog food, and a smaller one for the toys and treats. "I think I'd need to go back to my apartment to drop these things off before bringing Cotton back out... Oh my goodness... I completely forgot." Candice face-palmed with the hand holding Cotton's leash, causing the puppy to have to come back to her side. "I'm not keeping you from anything, right?"

Jett shrugged, seeming entirely indifferent. “Just work, no big deal.” He couldn’t help but flash a slight grin. “I’m on break though. Guess I should be heading back. You take care of Cotton,” he said with a slight nod; he assumed Candice needed no encouragement in that department. She seemed as excited to have Cotton as Cotton was to have her.

He knelt, given Cotton a quick little pat on the head before he stood and brushed himself off. “You and her take safe, I’ll catch you around some time. It was good to see you, and nice to meet her.”

"It was nice seeing you again, Jett!" Candice said with a wave and a smile. Cotton on the other hand appreciated the attention as the little puppy herself thanked Jett with a bark. Candice couldn't help but giggle at the little puppy. She was kind of surprised how well they got along from the start. "I think Cotton loved meeting you as well," noted Candice. "Make sure you take care of yourself as well!"

As Jett made his way back to work, Candice followed him for a little bit until he was back inside. She waved to him again and continued on her way home. The little dog excitedly walked side to side around Candice. At a stoplight, the little puppy sat in between Candice's leg, causing the girl once again to laugh. "Welcome to your new life, my dearest Cotton!"
