Last week or so, I was sitting in bed around midnight, trying to sleep.
Then I heard the little phone 'beeps' when you're pressing the numbers down. We only have one phone in our house, so I went, and it was just sitting there on the 'hook'. Going back to bed, I heard it again, and closed the door to the room it was in. It wouldn't stop, so I just turned on the TV and turned up the static until it blocked the beeps out.

Thinking it was a one time thing, well, I was wrong. I'm hearing it all the time now, even when no one is home but me. Two nights ago we were watching a movie, and I told my parents it was ringing, so we paused it, and no rings. It kept doing that, over and over, and I was the only one that could hear it.

Last night, while I was on Gaia, it rang three times and I totally freaked out. (It was around 11:45.) So I went to the phone and on the message I heard a breathing sound then a hangup. I watched the little number '1' flash, ignored it, and went back to bed. This morning when I got up at 4:30, the message wasn't there.

What is with this? (There's more than just the phone thing, I just didn't want my first post to be so long. D: Thanks for the help.)

UPDATE: So, I tried the tape recorder idea. I didn't hear the beeps. I've tried sleeping more, not that I had a lack of sleep, and the beeping is still there. Well...along with the beeping, now there's kind of this voice thing.

Not like, "I hear voices" sort of thing, I don't want to sound crazy. It's only happened a few times within the past week, but two nights ago I was watching Family Guy, and I muted the TV when the commercial came. I got up to get a bowl of cereal, and all of the sudden, I heard this really mean version of my voice say "Sit back down." I obeyed. Maybe I was tired then, but I just thought I'd post anything to narrow this down. It's really annoying. Really.

Strange. Sometimes when the mind is exhausted it will start producing its own sensory stimulus (i.e. seeing/hearing things). However, what your describing is quite odd. If it reoccurs often, try to gather evidence, such as getting a tape/voice recorder and trying to capture the sounds you're hearing. I know that when I'm uber-tired, I start hearing classical music.

Creepy, very creepy...hmm...You're probably just too tired, when I'm tired I think I'm going crazy but then I realize that I haven't slept...hm...well if it keeps happening just do what Soleq said. Sorry I couldn't help too much..

As much as I'd like to disagree with everyone and carve my own path in advice-giving like my Idol, I'd have to agree because things like that have happened to me when I was sleep deprived. One of the few times I was actually freaked out was when I hadn't slept in a good day, and I was walking towards the bathroom and I -swore- that there was blood all over the walls in there. So I'm guessing that you're experience was along the same lines. If that isn't it, then you've probably gone insane... Don't worry, I'll introduce you to everyone there.

Seen blood on the floor and water running down the walls.

I always hear the phone ringing.

Usually when I listen to music at night or are in the shower.

Sometimes when you are relaxing you expect to be interrupted, so you might think you've heard something to interrupt you.

I have to definitely agree with the last statement. I constantly think my phone is ringing when I am doing something else, but it usually turns out to be a false alarm.

Oi, okay, time to clear a few things up here.

I love sleep. I get a lot of it, and am rarely deprived. (Oh, and since I've posted this, I'm still hearing it.)

Secondly, it's not like a one-time thing to distract me. It's over and over again, then it stops for a little while, then maybe 7 more rings, and the cycle continues.

Ugh. Maybe I have gone insane.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

For about a year I would hear clicks in the wall behind my bed. They seemed to happen more when people were moving around in the hall, or when the fan was on, or when the shower was on. That stopped eventually, though. Now I hear someone coming on my instant messanger, even when no one is. Mostly, I hear things like that when I'm uncomfortable. That year was when I was already having a lot of trouble sleeping, and I hear things on my IM especially when I'm hoping someone will come online.

My guess is that you imagined hearing the beeps once, and since you were thinking about it after that it started happening again.

I hate to be the bearer of bad s**t, and it's unlikely (though possible), but the possibility is there that this is auditory hallucinations due to medication(s), or a chemical imbalance in your brain, such as from a disorder like depression or schizophrenia.

I don't mean to alarm you, but I used to hear phones ringing when I was on the antidepressant Effexor. It also made me have visual hallucinations, like seeing dead people and blood dripping down the walls. It wasn't fun. So, the possibility could be there that this is medication-influenced.

I agree with that Soleq said. Often when I get tired I see like little lights flashing across the room.
Something else you could try, get rid fo the phone. unplug it and get a new one. If that still happends with a new phone then you know something is definatly going on. It might just be a mechanical problem with the phone.
