A new rush of information had flooded in to Trine on the day following Malvren's Hatching. Cetalese, like many other young riders, heard bits and pieces in between lessons for the next several days when they were traveling through hallways, attending meals in the mess hall, or keeping up with minor duties around the weyr.

The most prominent of rumors Ceta had heard was that Malvren had had only one Bronze and he had gone between early on. From what she gathered, it had been many cycles since any weyr had seen a hatchling between because of a lack of rider. The rest seemed to be pretty much standard Hatching information, if what she'd heard after Benden's Clutch was normal. How many dragons there were-- a number that Cetalese still didn't have down exactly-- and the most notable Impressions and what Eirlyn and her Gold had done. The poor woman still hadn't recovered from the loss of her weyrmate. As a Holder, Ceta understood the bond between a married couple better than many riders, though she hadn't suffered such a loss or experienced such a bond herself. Not was she ever likely to, now that she was a rider.

However, the rumors did make her think of her time at the weyrleader gathering at Southern nearly four sevendays ago. She had enjoyed meeting F'itz and Mercy, for all that their personalities varied so wildly from one another's. It was a good step forward for inter-weyr relations, and one she would hate to see go to waste. Plus, she had promised Mercy that she would write.

So she settled down in the barrack she shared with Eliza, drew out a sheet of paper and a valuable pot of ink, and settled down to write a letter. Perhaps now, with something to actually discuss, was the best time of all to write.

Dear Mercy,

It's been some sevendays since the weyrleader meeting, but I overheard some riders speaking of Malvren today and thought to write you. How have you been? I heard your recent Clutch was overall a success, but that you lost a Bronze. I was sorry to hear of it. With Thread so close, I know every weyr needs all the dragons they can get. Any loss of life is sad, of course, especially when the dragon is so young. Are the Candidates all right? I've never seen a riderless hatchling, but I can't imagine the little one went peacefully. I hope there weren't any fatalities, though the rumors here have said nothing about any.

I have lessons soon, so I will end this here so I have enough time to seal this and send the letter on. I'm sorry it's so short, for now, but I'll try to follow it with something longer. I know Daine- the Green firelizard who delivered this- wasn't with me at the convocation, so I hope she didn't startle you with her appearance. She's relatively calm for a Green, but she can be rather direct. Let me know if she was rude at all.

Again, I hope you are well and look forward to hearing back from you. Give my best to Aerith.

~ Cetalese

"Daine," Ceta called and, a moment later, the Green firelizard appeared with a small chirrup and landed on the desk. She cocked her head the paper her owner was rolling and then looked at Cetalese expectantly.

"I want you to take this to Malvren Weyr. It goes to Mercy, the rider of the White dragon. Do you understand? Mercy." She fixed an image of Mercy in her mind, so her flit would know who to look for. "White dragon." This time, she projected an image of Aerith as she stared Veralidaine down. The Green mantled her wings and let out an affectionate, cheerful little whistle. She understood. The cliff-weyr. She had seen images of it from other firelizards. She could go to the cliff-weyr, too, and find the White dragon and her rider. She picked the letter up in her front paw, flapped into the air, and blinked between as Cetalese watched. The Greenrider began packing her materials away just as Halith, who had been respectfully silent up to this point, peeked back in to make sure it was safe to interrupt her rider.

Cetalesemine?

I've sent the letter off with Daine. What is it, Halith?

Oh good! I hope you said hello from me. You did, didn't you? Anyway, lessons are soon. I'm following Lunath down to the training grounds. Will you hurry to meet us there now that you're done?

Cetalese pushed the drawer closed and stood. I'm on my way now.

Later, she would write an equally quick letter to F'itz, she decided on her way out of her room. It was hard to tell if the older rider was actually interested in hearing from her, but she would try anyway. He'd had a good head on his shoulders, even if Halith had considered Brumath "odd, but a good Brown", and Cetalese thought she could learn as much from him as she did from any of the older riders here. She had also seen an aerial maneuver one of the wings was practicing the other day that she wanted to ask someone about. Maybe he would know.

Cetalese didn't end up having time that night to write to F'itz. Instead, Cetalese and Daine-- who was keeping her company, which was pretty usual these days-- took Ceta's lunch back to her room after her early lessons were over and set up her writing materials again. Mercy hadn't written her back yet, but Ceta was sure Daine wouldn't mind trying a new location. The little Green hadn't voiced a protest at seeing the materials yet, anyway.

Ceta took a moment to start in on her lunch and think, then began writing in a relatively fluid hand for one who was a simple Holder.

Dear F'itz,

I hope you don't consider this a waste of valuable paper, as you seem practical and might consider it just that, but before we all left Southern I had promised to write Mercy and I wanted to write you a letter as well. I know it comes several sevendays late, but Weyrling lessons keep me busy, which I'm sure you remember very well from your own training.

How are things at Benden? It feels strange to hesitate over writing a courtesy question, but since I'm genuinely curious and relations between the weyrs are still strained, despite the weyrleaders' ruling, I did. I trust you know I mean nothing by it, just general concern for your well-being. The climate here at Trine is still

Cetalese paused and debated the correct word to use, giving Daine the chance to preen Ceta's curly hair, pulling several strands loose from the runner-tail she had it tied back in.

tense with Abigail showing no signs of waking up. It was hard to watch what we were saying at the convocation at Southern, but it seems somewhat easier to write it than say it. I imagine that weys everywhere are as unbalanced, of course. Despite the overall status of Benden, I hope you and Brumath are well.

I saw one of the wings performing a maneuver the other day that I didn't recognize. I was hoping you would be able to name it and explain it to me, as you've doubtlessly seen most of the maneuvers I'll witness or experience as a rider. The wing started out together, but the wingleader and his second suddenly split the wing apart in to two levels of riders. It looked fairly evenly split and then the wings turned very slightly in opposite directions- top left, bottom right- spreading out so there was more space between riders. The end result was a staggered two-level wing. From there they went on to practicing rolls without hitting their wingmates, but I hadn't seen the original maneuver before. Any insights you could lend on what the formation is and what its purpose is would be appreciated.

Although it would be good to hear from you, please don't feel obligated to respond. I understand how busy you may be. Please say hello to Brumath from Halith and I.

~ Cetalese

Daine watched Cetalese write from her place on the girl's shoulder. She peered down at the writing as if she could really read it until Ceta set the pen aside. She let out a little questioning trill, and Ceta smiled slightly and reached up stroke her fingers along the slim green tail looped around her neck.

"Yes, this is for you; you're going to a different place, though, all right? Benden Weyr. In the north. Do you know how to get to Benden?" Ceta waited a moment as Daine's eyes whirled more quickly, and then let out an affirmative sound. She must have been communing with the other flits to get a location. Ceta rolled up the letter and held it out for Daine to take. "This goes to F'itz and Brown Brumath. F'itz." As she had done with Mercy, she fixed as clear an image of F'itz in her mind as she could. "Give it to F'itz, okay? Wait for a reply, too. I don't know if he has a firelizard. If he does, you can come back. If not, wait for a reply or until he tells you he isn't sending one."

Another excited, cheerful chirp and Daine unwrapped her tail and took to the air to get clearance for between. Daine would find him. She'd come back from Malvren in the middle of Ceta's lessons and began chattering up a storm to her while Ceta was trying to work on quickly removing and replacing her rider tack on Halith. As she took a bite of her wherry roast sandwich, Ceta shook her head slightly. She hoped that Daine came back during her lunch break this time and saved her a scolding from the Weyrling Master.

F'itz scanned the letter one last time before setting it down on his desk before him and fetching out a sheet of vellum. After opening his inkwell and picking up his quill he paused for a few moments, pondering how to begin.

Cetalese,

Correspondence, especially as rare as friendly correspondence between our two Weyrs, is never a waste.

Things at Benden grow more normal as the days go by, but we still feel the loss of our Weyrwoman and I cannot help but wonder about our future. If the twin golds rise together and fight our outlook is bleak indeed, but with luck either that will not happen or one of them will be taken far enough away for them not to feel in competition with one another.

They would have a child-queen ruling over them, or no queen at all. He hoped W'lin would continue to guide whichever girl ended up the senior, and that she would accept that guidance. Kindra was proud. She might choose to ignore him. Still, only time would tell that.

Brumath and I are well and I am glad to hear that things are well enough with you. I hope that your Weyrwoman makes a speedy recovery.

The wing formation you describe is primarily used to practice precision movements, and the discipline of holding your place. It had historical application in fighting Thread in some wind conditions, and may again soon enough if the Red Star in the sky is any indication. Having experienced Thread myself I wonder if we are prepared? I think not, truly I don't think we could ever be, but we could be using our energy much better by drilling and communicating with one another than by fighting and flinging accusations.

Over here investigations into the matter of the assassin have begun. Brumath has many theories, but I can't think of even one. Who would seek to murder our Queens and Weyrleaders with the Red Star shining? It makes no sense that I can see, but perhaps we shall turn up clues during the course of our investigation.

Fair winds and fine flame to you and Halith.

F'itz.

Setting his quill aside and blowing lightly on the ink to hasten its drying F'itz clicked his tongue to the black firelizard currently perched on his bookshelf and stroked the little beast as it fluttered over. "Cetalese," he pictured first the girl and then Trine Weyr as he remembered it from his visit, folding the letter and passing it over as he spoke. "Go now and give this to her. Good boy."

As the black vanished F'itz sat back in his chair and steepled his fingers, looking pensively up at the ceiling. He doubted most people would approve of what he'd just done and he was usually a man to go by the book... but he'd liked the girl and good relations really could be important in the future. Picking up the letter from the tropics F'itz got to his feet and selected an old dull covered book from his shelf and slid the sheet of paper inside at random. What his superiors and fellows did not know could not hurt them.

F'itz,

I know you are likely tired of hearing about the goings-on at Trine by this point, but the investigations here confuse me more by the day. I told you in my last letter of the Brownrider here, whose testimony was less desirable than I would have hoped. It seems that he is not the only one with his viewpoints (please forgive me for not telling you what they were; I am trying to leave as much direct detail out as possible, especially when the answers are obviously prejudiced) and many are prejudiced towards one weyr or group or another as the only culprits. I feel as if we aren't uncovering anything of particular note here; the best we've gotten is the idea that the dragon spotted at Malvren may have been used to ferry the murderer to all of his locations. Still, I suppose there's always the hope that something will turn up and that keeps us going.

I just can't help but believe that this conspiracy is larger than we expect. It was clearly not just one man, but even there... There will always be the question of who he was and who would have helped him do this. Or if he was the pawn for someone else. I'm getting sick of wondering 'who.'

Cetalese looked down at the letter, her thoughts spiraling off. It did seem to be her all consuming question. She had found she was good at envisioning plans and hows and whys... but to get to those she needed to know the 'who' and she didn't have it. While other investigators were irreverent or too focused on the task, Cetalese remained as logical and intent as ever. It gave her perspective, but even that wasn't doing much for her. Well, getting her thoughts down to F'itz and hearing his replies had been helping in the first week of investigations. She had hesitated in the first few days, but once she had decided to write him of what was going on at Trine, the last several days had seen two letters a day-- one to him, one from him-- between the two of them. He always had something to say to her, and what information he gave in return helped her have more to build on. In some ways, this correspondence was working out better than the in-Weyr search.

I can't help but feel that someone who was willing to kill two Weyrwomen and a Weyrleader had some greater plan in mind. I don't think that healer was wrong. I do think evidence was planted, at Malvren and Benden. That speaks to the idea that someone wanted the weyrs at each others throats, and a cold-blooded killer as crazy as the one Brakiath killed wouldn't have had that kind of foresight. There was a rumor that the body was some famous Holdless named Flynn and another that he had killed his employers. I don't know that he had the time to kill his employers when he died here, trying to kill Abigail, but employers sounds logical to me, whoever they are.

Who. Who. I am really so tired of that word.

Cetalese

She put aside the pen and covered her eyes for a moment. They were beginning to search the storage rooms now. They'd only covered half today, but Cetalese didn't think it would take very long to finish searching them, unless they also began searching the other rooms in the lower caverns. That, she thought, would be left for another week, though. She dropped her hands and stared at her letter as the ink dried, a faintly sad expression lingering around her mouth and eyes. At times, Ceta still debated the wisdom of sharing even the most basic findings with her friends at the other weyrs, but as she had thought earlier, speaking with F'itz was proving to be beneficial for the both of them. A bit of inter-Weyr connection couldn't hurt anyone anyway, especially if it helped them develop their theories for the investigation.

She called Daine to her and sent her off with the letter. She only hoped that as the weeks passed and more happened, the two of them would be able to compile what useful information Trine and Benden had learned and be able to get a greater picture of what might be going on.

The tension in the Weyr, and even within his own investigation group was starting to get to F'itz. The usually reserved, detached man found himself thrown into a maelstrom of chaos and accusations, and worst of all his suspicions were growing. If he was right... well it didn't bear thinking about.

With stress and worry pressing on his mind he was only to glad to sit down at his desk and open the letter from Trine. Once he'd read it a couple of times he smoothed out a piece of parchment, dipped his quill into his inkwell, and started to write.

Cetalese

I share your frustration at the lack of any real facts. Those facts that have been turned up seem to shed no light on matters either, if anything they confuse even further. How are we to know what evidence is real, and what might be planted? How are we to find out anything at all if we fight like children? Apologies. I am finding working with my group frustrating; egos are clashing, making it hard for us to get along and also making it more difficult to get along with some of the people we are questioning.

Kindra. He worried more about her with every day. She was... proud, impetuous. She had none of the quiet poise a weyrwoman ought to possess, none of the dignity. He hoped she would grow into it, he really did.

I agree that this is something big, and you might well be right about the evidence being planted. I for one honestly do not believe that Malvren orchestrated the death of our Weyrwoman, I have other suspicions that I hardly dare consider. I do not think that I will find evidence to confirm what I think but it seems rather neat. Perhaps the aim was not to set the Weyrs at one another's throats, perhaps it was to weaken them, and give somebody waiting on the sidelines a chance at power.

It is said power corrupts; it's not such a leap to see that the desire for it can too.

Wishing you well;

F'itz

Was it wise to write what he had written? Maybe not, but it was done now. He could write a new letter but he was loathe to waste parchment, and perhaps a frank exchange of thoughts would help him think clearer about things in any case.

Decision made he folded the letter and handed it to the waiting black firelizard.

F'itz's response had somehow relieved Cetalese. She was not alone in thinking things were stranger than they appeared. F'itz, too, seemed to have his suspicions. Although she knew it was wiser not to state explicitly what they thought, in the event their letters were intercepted, it didn't mean they couldn't discuss their findings and hopefully work toward a better understanding. Then, when the time came... well, if it came, they would worry about stating their conclusions openly at that point, not now.

Cetalese had hidden the letter from Eliza, but at her earliest moment she had responded. Although her group didn't have any infighting (yet), she didn't expect that all of the other groups would function in the same way. She had written an empathetic response to his troubles, although he had stricken them from the letter, and then continued with her group's newest findings. It didn't amount to much, but perhaps they would gather more evidence over time.

When she came across the drudge who had mentioned Flynn, Cetalese had immediately placed it into her next letter for F'itz to put his two marks down on. From his response, she got that the idea had come to him at some point as well, which made it likely that the killer had been Flynn. That still left the dreadful 'who' question for his employers, though, and by the fifth week Cetalese found herself exhausted thinking about it. If it hadn't been so important, and had she not been the dedicated woman she was, she may have forgone wondering and investigating completely, as some of those in the other groups had.

It was the last day of the investigation when Cetalese dropped heavily into the chair at her desk and took out materials to write to F'itz. Sensing what her owner was doing, Daine curled up on the bed to wait for her instructions.

F'itz,

We, myself and Narisa, our junior Goldrider, met a rider in the mines who made a striking observation. Malvren loved H'trel and Eirlyn. You at Benden loved Kestril. No one from Trine would willingly harm Abigail. The rider we spoke to was a bit more biased about the killer being unable to have come from Trine, but it made me think: the killer can't be one of us. I don't know how a dragon has come in to it, unless the killer is from another weyr, but although there are always dissenters, no rider from any of the three attacked weyrs would have wanted to kill the leaders they loved. Or helped kill them, anyway, if the killer was Flynn as we believe.

I know you already have your suspicions, but we have discussed how the murderer moved about before. If it is a-dragonback, the rider assisting Flynn has to have been from another weyr, or else something more sinister is going on there as well.

The investigation ends today, but I don't think it can end there. The weyrs need to move on, yes. However, if we forget and simply let the mystery lie, I fear we will only be opening ourselves to more attacks from whoever it is who is trying to obtain power by removing our leaders. They're quiet now, but you and I both know that we can't shut our eyes and hope this goes away. The killer is dead, but his employers are out there somewhere. They're waiting for something. Maybe waiting for this to blow over. I know they'll be back, though.

Narisa and I aren't close, but I'll be keeping an eye on her from now on. I think I have a friend or two who may assist, but I think I am only close enough with one to enlist her aid. Still, I will do my best, and hope that any security measures.

Cetalese signed the letter and sent it off with Daine, staring into the distance for a long moment. Her distraction only lasted a moment. Well, no time like the present.

Halith, please ask Velath where Eliza is right now? I'd like to speak with her, and she hasn't gotten back yet.
