The first few stores they had encountered were empty of other fighters. Pine needles were everywhere, and it made Cody's nose twitch. The air felt so thick in here.. because of that jacking tree, no doubt, and its stupid jacking minions. What the hell was even going on? His large hand tugged on a feathered one behind him, practically dragging the poor canarrion ghoul around with him. Truthfully, it made him feel a little more confident, having somebody else around, especially when he felt so out of the loop. Backup was always a good thing. Perhaps it's also that he wanted to show off to somebody, but his track record today hadn't been so good. He was going to stick to the "backup" idea.
"Keep your eyes open," he said, nodding back to Marigold. As if it was something that needed to be said. "I know they're in here, I jacking saw 'em come through this way." As the duo drew into the back of the maul, the place was already nicely torn apart from prior brawls. More pine needles amid the destroyed benches, plants, garbage.
Cody would never be able to stomach the smell of pine after this experience, that was for sure.

Marigold kept as close to the boil as she could without compromising their mobility. She was visibly unnerved, solid-black eyes darting this way and that at every little noise. She may have clung to the other boil once or twice without meaning to. In truth, she badly wanted to perch on his shoulder and simply hide her head in the crook of his neck. The idea appealed to the undead canarrion and she would have done so, had the Reaper taking care of her not reprimanded her the last time she tried that.
Something about it not being what proper people did. Of course, she had also been in her real form at the time rather than this reaper-like guise. So that might also have some weight.
"Yeees," she chirped, agreeing to make sure nothing snuck up on them as she turned her head this way and that despite her nerves and anxiety. The smell of pine didn't bother her. She didn't breathe but her agitation was from the idea that something was going to just pop outta no-where and try to put them in boxes!
She suddenly squawked and pointed a rotting finger at something that rustled amidst the pile of trash.

Cody had spotted it as soon as Marigold had pointed at it. An enemy? Perhaps, if they were getting smaller, but he wouldn't put it past these JOYful bastards. "Hold up," he said to the canarrion as one long arm came to nudge her back. He wanted the first go at whatever it was. "I got this one. Get ready to back me up." Best not to take any chances, right?
The jiang-shi crouched down, and with a yell, he jumped into the pile of trash. Papers, cups, and garbage went flying everywhere, just as he spun on the spot, fingers splayed and sharp nails bared. From beneath his feet, a rat squeaked fearfully and went running off under the benches. The undead frowned deeply.
"The hell, man," he said as he stood up. "We go lookin' for enemies and they all up and leave." He kicked at some of the loose papers. Just as suddenly as his expression had soured, it opened up again as he turned to his fellow undead, shrugging as he stared at her with his normal slightly cross-eyed gaze. "Maybe they went home?" That would be a waste; he wanted to throw at least one good hit in this whole thing.

 While the two of them were distracted by the rat, a faint jingling sound could be heard behind them, getting louder. It blended well into the music filling the Maul, however. Cody turned around just in time to see it looming over Marigold. Several branches full of ornaments were already hanging over her head, and several of the large, heavy, and fragile ones suddenly "slipped" off the branches. Two glass ornaments shattered on either side of her, but one ball managed to hit her on the way down. The tree, apparently excited at its success, bounced up and down. The ornaments jingled... JOYfully? Creeping Christmas Tree Attack roll: 2 d12 Damage: 4 (Marigold) HP: 10/10

Marigold was about to coo an apology to Cody for her oversight when another tree reappeared! And this time, rather than pine needles, it was an ornament that struck her on the head!!! Rotting arms rose overhead, trying to shield herself from any more strikes before she peered up at the tree with wide, glistening eyes. She let out a high-pitched keen, aimed at the Insanity-fueled JOY tree. Hopefully it would bring it back to its senses?

"Watch -- !" Cody had begun to yell towards the canarrion, but the ornament came down on her head too suddenly. As the ghoul launched her retaliation against her attacker, the jiang-shi extended an arm over to give the tree a smack. It managed to dance just out of his reach, and he only barely grazed it. The boil growled in annoyance. "Jack dammit, hold still!"

The tree started to flail wildly at the noise Marigold was making. It clearly didn't like that. Ornaments started flinging all over the place, bells on the tree making a racket as they were flung to and fro, and tinsel raining down on the pair (but mostly Marigold). The flailing became a little more determined, and the tree started to pelt the two with ornaments. Most of them this time were small - bells, bits of tinsel, some plush ornaments - but several more big, heavy ornaments fell straight towards the canarrion. A large ceramic angel smashed next to her, showering her with shrapnel, and - rather appropriately - a glass cat landed on her head. Creeping Christmas Tree Attack roll: 2 d12 Damage: 8 (Marigold) HP: 7/10 ((I only counted 3 damage to the tree? If I'm off, let me know.))

Marigold cringed at the hail of ornaments, but the instant the cat-shaped ornament fell on her, solid-black eyes grew saucer-wide. "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she screeched, the pitch even higher than earlier. She grabbed onto Cody, burying her face into his sleeve while her free hand flailed in an attempt to rid herself of the offending thing. Clearly, Mar-Mar held no love for felines.

Cody pulled the canarrion back after she screeched loudly at the tree. Unfortunately he was not quick enough to save her from the rain of ornaments. Instead this time he stepped in front of her with a "get back!" and clawed the tree with his long fingernails.
"Back off!" he huffed at it, eyes narrowed.

Music had been swelling in the background, unnoticed until the volume suddenly spiked*, a version of Carol of the Bells that had somehow taken a very aggressive twist. The bells on the tree began to ring along with the background music as it advanced on the boil. Attacking the canarrion with the cat ornament had worked spectacularly well... but the tree wasn't as sure what to throw at a jiang-shi. It tried a glass angel, a ceramic rooster, a mirror, and finished off with several of the bells. Its aim seemed to be improving as well, as all the items landed on Cody. Creeping Christmas Tree Attack roll: 2 d12 Damage: 8 (Cody) HP: 2/10 ((*about one minute in))

Marigold, too upset about having a jacking cat on any part of her, simply clung to Cody for safety. The boil was protecting her so she would trust him! She'll owe him big but that was alright. If it just weren't for that horrible tree and that garbled cacophony trying to pass itself off as music, the canarrion might even be content to be burying her face against someone.
