EDIT: Gosh, in Music Theory, I was taught never to use "song", so I turned the whole "Song Above You" to Composition Above You, my Prof would've had a heart attack if she saw that! D; I know a few people are already familiar with this kind of thread, but I want to see how FEF's taste on music varies from other guilds! BEFORE YOU START THOUGH, PLEASE READ THE RULES!1.) Do not just leave a number and post a work, please explain what you liked/didn't like about the previous poster's piece they posted. 2.) Do not favour a particular game, which means to say, if someone posts a piece from a game that you absolutely like, don't give it an auto 10/10. I know it's a very hard thing to do, but try and break away from nostalgia and actually examine the composition, you'd be surprised how different it sounds from an outside perspective! This goes in vice versa, if someone posts a game that you despise, examine the song, not the game. 3.) Please no orchestral, rock, and so on remakes of a piece outside of the game. Yes, Koichi Sugiyama did once have the entire London Philharmonic Orchestra at his disposal, but this thread is for in-game video game music only. Remakes of the game which features a remade piece is acceptable though (i.e- posting Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon music for the DS, in light of Fire Emblem Dark Dragon from the NES era) 4.) No "revenge" posts, which means if someone gave the piece you posted a 3/10, don't reply and give them a 2/10 just to get back at them. Example of what a good reply will (or look close to) look like: Quote: This is an interesting one for me. The song sounds like a video game level on the Great Wall of China should. A bit of oriental feeling, done well with the good ol' SNES synth, and it gives me the feeling of running down the very long, very tall great wall towards an important goal, and I gotta get there fast. My favorite part of the song is whenever it backs off for that little repeating melody, only to play the same melody at full force right after. However, the song feels somewhat disjointed to me. I feel like there are too many little bits and melodies, and they themselves aren't long enough to establish themselves and contribute to a greater whole. That, and I feel like speedy rising and falling bits in the background at the beginning of the whole thing sort of cheapen it. They don't fit in with the rest of the song, I think, since it's slower paced and much more percussive. I don't really know what to give this. But a It's hard for me to nail a number for this one, but I'd say... 7/10. As for my Sakuraba knowhow, while I primarily know him from two series myself (Baten Kaitos and Golden Sun), I've played other games he has worked on and listened to other soundtracks. I don't hold his tendency to reuse themes over him like some people do, but it's noticeable, especially when I feel the song isn't as memorable as some of his other ones. Also, while the DWIII SNES soundtrack I feel isn't as good as the original overall, I like both versions of Unknown World. They have different effects, both of them nostalgic and with a good tune at their base. I had a feeling you would say what you did. :B Player Phase- Fire Emblem: Dark Dragon and the Sword of Light (Original) by Yuka Tsujiyoko As shown, this poster critiques the overall quality of the instrumentals in the game, then goes on to give a visual which she got from it (if applicable, maybe you didn't get anything from it!) and notes some of the cons of the composition. Also, she brought up discussion about other compositions in the thread, and her response to a piece that recently got critiqued. This shows that small talk is indeed allowed in this thread, so long as you rate the song above you. Credits to Tiki for the example. Being an FE guild, I begin with an FE piece, but feel free to post ANY piece from ANY game however! Dark Emperor by Yuka Tsujiyoko from Fire Emblem Shin Monshou no Nazo EDIT: And if you get ninja'd, which is bound to happen sooner or later, no biggie, you just have to rate two songs, that's all. cat_razz EDIT2: If you have bass enhancing headphones, do don them, as pieces tend to sound better with more bass!

Now this is an idea! This is a grand idea, once my internet loads the video I can give my response to it.
I have a couple, not from FE but from another giant out of Japan but I have to ask, Nobu's One Winged Angel from Advent Children is that go or no go? Because technically TECHNICALLY it's still done by the same author and related to the game but I don't know what your point of view would be on that.
So as for yours, being the first one, it's a good song. Enjoyable but I've defiantly heard better out of Fire Emblem so I have to say a 7/10 mostly because I think you could have picked a better start but it's still a good song.
If it's a yes on One Winged Angel (AC version) then One Winged Angel (AC Version) it is, if not...
Dancing Mad FFVI
Those two are my tops in terms of non-remixed Final Fantasy music.

Am going with One Winged Angel, although I am familiar with both songs, I fear if I did Kefka's song, I'd be here until the end of time writing an essay on a fifteen minute piece. This is a highly suspenseful piece, in which it should, as it's the final showdown of Sephiroth vs. Cloud and his posse, so all's well with the matching of context. The instrumental was fantastic for a video game, even if I've only ever played the PS1 version, and not the AC, but I am really impressed of now nicely and authentic the instruments in this piece sound. Although I am not much of a fan of the Final Fantasy series, I do enjoy the final boss music Uematsu offers. Furthermore, what is great about this piece, is the basso continueno line offered in the low strings. However, an interesting happens later on: there is a marriage of rock and strings. Although it is supposed to add to the song, in which it did at various parts, I feel it got rather chaotic at times to try and find a nice balance between the two. Another interesting thing is some parts in this particular composition lacked transitions, leaping right into next. Prime example being at 2:16 where the singers went from chorus to something else completely without much build up or anything for that matter. One final thing I noticed was the instrumental rock break was very odd, and I couldn't help but feel as though something in there was arbitrary. However, despite the minute, nitpicking shortcomings, it was still a solid piece regardless. I'm giving this an 8/10. Rose Town from Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars by Yoko Shimomura Also, welcome to FEF by the way, I hope you enjoy your stay! 3nodding EDIT: Also, although I did rate the AC version this time, I'd much rather stick to in-game pieces if possible, thanks in advance. -Ishtar (or Maji, depends on who you ask)

For an SNES song it has a nice jazzy theme. I tend to like jazz themes a bit. I haven't play that far in the game but it looks like it it might be a great place once I get to it. I give it 8/10. It's not a song that wows me over but it is good.
It took a while to figure out what I wanted to start off with first. I finally decided to go with Soul Calibur II's Windshadow. The songs come from various different composers from Namco so I don't know which one exactly made this track. This is from the Weapon Master Mode when you get to the 2 extra chapters. Enjoy

I remember hearing this song when I played on the Gamecube version. I spent hours of my day playing SCII because it was so very enjoyable. And the one thing that stood out the most for me was the Weapon Master Mode's music which still stands as some of my all time favourite music. And for a good reason.
Though I'm not completely in love with the song I'm still giving it an 8/10 because it reminds me of something that Weapon Master had that the normal and arcade modes didn't: A story. Where your a wondering warrior who becomes a hero and this song really fits that kind of feeling. I'd love to listen to the whole piece as well, but my internet sucks and can barely load a 1 minute video. Never mind download 2 things at once an load a video. But I am very glad to have found this song because I truly enjoyed it while I played SCII
Now, I'm throughing out another FF OST because, well that's kinda my thing, I'm a FF Nerd harder than an FE Nerd I'm afraid.
Dissidia Final Fantasy Remix of FFV Battle on the Big Bridge Yes it's a remix, but a better version from Dissidia. Though I enjoy both and have a far better remix, it's still stands up as a classic as far as I am concerened. Thoughts and opinions?

Ah Battle on the Big Bridge: The theme that plays when you face Exdeath in Bartz mode. I remember not liking this song to be honest. It just...was not one of my favorite ones. I preferred Final Fantasy VII, VIII and X over this one. But it is still a nice song with the way it moves. I will give it a 7.5/10 Dissidia: Cosmos Theme

Ah Cosmos's theme. For the Goddess of Harmony the song seems very, chaotic at times, the backround instrument (and that which started it) doesn't seem to fit with the calm piano and smooth vocals. Still I did enjoy hearing this song in the theaters and while I certainly think that the artist has done better (primarily with Doudecims Chaos Final Battle) the song is still very good and in some way's very soothing.
7/10 from me.
And speaking od Doudecim: Cantata Mortis & God in Fire Feral Chaos Last Battle Theme
God knows that b*****d was tough! 30 levels over the max that you can reach and with over 120k HP finally felling him in 00 made a satifying conclusion to a good tale in my opinons.
For the next one I'll move off of Final Fantasy music, after the guild IS a Fire Emblem guild and I have many Fire Emblem songs that I love and would love to share.

Love the nice build up to a dramatic moment with a slight pause afterwards. It then go to a nice calm bit before some more build up. Then come a rock section with English lyrics. I started to feel myself rocking out a little bit to the music. I really liked this song. 9/10
Well if its FE music people want lets go with the theme to one of my favorite characters Alvis. Versus Alvis for Fire Emblem Seisen no Keifu is composed by Yuka Tsujiyoko

Ah his theme...this was a nice touch to fighting him. Alvis with his Fala flame against Celice with Tyrfing, or anyone else really. It had a nice feeling for the fight, and the instrumentation was nice. 8.5/10 Following the Fire Emblem theme we have Leaf Army ~ In Search of the Victory ~ Near of the Defeat

That wasn't a Cantata at all, and let's not even worry about the latter half, J.S Bach would have a heart attack. ninja
I'm marking this in two parts: One the "Cantata" and the whatever the second half is, so my terminology I will use will reflect that.
Although this piece started out rather comedic for me, beginning with the ascending "aaaaah" line which sounded like something out of a beginning of an 70s disco song (I was waiting for a pop singer to go "Freak out!" and a disco formulae in the instruments to appear), it picked up. Although Uematsu did not compose this piece, I did get the feeling of his impact. To start, the choral line followed similar equations to "One Winged Angel", having a high voice singing short, staccato notes, while rich melody is sung below, and various ritornellos were in there which followed Uematsu's equations in his piece: "One Winged Angel" closely. Also, have a listen to "Battlefield Without Light" from Genso Suikoden II by Miki Higashino, then the "Cantata" from this piece you'll s**t brix.
Now the other half..... this is where things take a turn for the downfall unfortunately. For such an epic beginning, I thought it was a slap to the song to have some random girl sing a repetitive Dissidia generic rock song for the second half. Having played the first Dissidia, the similarities between this, and their other lyrical songs seemed almost identical to me. I am sure if I were marking on lyrics, rather than the formulae, the mark would be better, but alas, having taken a Music History course in university, I find I pay more attention to the formulae, rather than lyrics.
6.5/10- the "Cantata" saved this song's hide immensely. It was epic, albeit, not true to the cantata formulae in any form, rather than the type of singing, I still enjoyed it.Ninja'd! Versus Alvis, must not nostalgia, must not nostalgia... I loved Alvis too by the way, so I'll try my absolute best not to favour.
To start, I LOVED the beginning where they use Alvis's main theme on the organ, and then flew right into the upbeat, epic violin part. There was one odd place in this piece I just noticed which was the ironic, somewhat calm brass line that ascends and descends. I felt as though Tsujiyoko could have done something more climatic there, to respond to the previous piano part, but it does work nonetheless.
Despite saying I wouldn't, this gets a 9/10, because even if I can say I love FE4, this is one of my favourite boss songs formulae-wise anyway in FE4. ...aaaand Ninja'd for the third time, I'm colour coding this so it's easier to read. xD Damn it! Who told you that this is my favourite ally phase (ironically) in the game? While it may seem like I am favouring FE5, as it is my favourite. FE. Ever, I really am not, as out of all the songs in that game, this is one of the best in my opinion. To start, FE5's instrument quality is simply phenomenal, every time I hear the FE5 brass in any piece, I swoon. Secondly, the word painting captured in this piece fits perfectly: scary bishop, runnnnnn! This piece does not deviate from the main idea at all, retaining the whole defeat word painting. Also, the chromatic ascending of lines (especially the violin part), as well as being in a minor key adds the whole suspense idea. What more can I say? This song is a solid piece, and fits the context beautifully.
9/10, only thing that rubs me the wrong way is it is rather slow for a battle song, especially seeing as it's a battle theme where you're losing, shouldn't you be fighting faster and more desperate? Responding to the trend, I want to post another FE song: Final Map Theme from Fire Emblem Gaiden by Yuka Tsujiyoko

EDITED: I was beaten to the post I was replying to twice.... wow.
Wow, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back now aren't we? I'd reconize 8-bit music anywhere I heard it. And anything 8-bit can be terrible, or it can be amazing. It starts off really good, and from what I managed to hear before my internet failed to load the video is stayed just that way. I like this, I really do. 9/10
Life Returns the song that no matter how pissed off or what state of mind I'm in, I just calm down. The ultimate calmdown song for me, tied with RoF's Silent Dream, but that is neither here nor there.
And FE9 Path of Radience was a very strong game, though it was "short" for a fire emblem game, for the first one to come off of the hand helds it was amazing! The graphics, the few cutscenes made this game a must buy for me. As well, the music, like all FE music stands the test of time regardless.

Well the of the songs of the Herons. It calms me ever so. Galdar always has this touch for anyone. Knowing in game how well these songs work has that power. Unfortunately the background really didn't feel like it fit. 6.5/10
This come from Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone (PSP version). I consider the game to be a hard one. The music I wanted to show off was also a hard pick. It was between my favorite character to use Roswell's theme or the Emperor of Carnage Gulcasa's theme. I went with the theme of Gulcasa, Blazing Emperor Gulcasa Sortie! (BTW He's BOTH titles. Emperor of Carnage is his English title, Blazing Emperor is his Japanese title.)

Life Returns...the singing at the beginning was nice to me. It has a nice touch to it in my eyes, and it gives a calm feeling. It was a nice touch to Path of Radiance and I really liked it. Just overall, I get a calm feeling from this, and I can sit back and enjoy it. The lyrics inside are just there to keep you calming with the background music. 9/10Ninja'd Yggdra Union...something I am not used to, so I can't say much about this. However, I have heard enough about Gulcasa to know that he is a pain in the a**, so this theme feels fitting. 8/10Start the Justice - Recovery B More Thracia 776 music. If I recall right this is the ONLY enemy healing music in all of Fire Emblem.

Hmm... can't say this is my kind of song. The oooohs and ahhhs help give the song a darker feel, especially with how monotone they are, but it distracts from the main part of the song. You may as well just have the ooooohs and ahhhhs without the rest. It's not very long, but then again, you can find good music even though they're short. 8/10Zero from Ace Combat Zero.

Oh Roy, I heart the music you post, it's always new and exciting for me, this being a prime example! I really enjoyed this song, although I may not be correct on my word painting, having not played this game, I got the image of a life or death mission, being put up against people you may not necessarily wish to fight from the brief soprano piece, yet fierce, from the male line. Also, if you didn't pick up the subtle hint from the other thread, I LOVE Hispanic sounding acoustics, and I was thrilled to hear it in such an epic sounding song, yet along being the framework of it. Should I 10/10 it? I have no choice naturally. Although the beginning was slow, the latter half made this song for me tenfold. I love operatic singing, and Hispanic acoustic, and the marriage of the two is like an orgasm for the ears! -puts on iPod.- EDIT: I just noticed that the latter part uses the exact same chord progression as the first FE's recruitment song, which is always cool.
