The Little Blue Penguin The Little Blue Penguin is the smallest species of penguin in the world. They have several names including Fairy Penguin, Little Penguin, and Blue Penguin. The 'blue' aspect is derived from the color of their plumage, which is a vibrant slate-blue color.
Little Blue Penguins are native to the southern coasts of Australia and New Zealand, but have been reported to have been seen in Chili. They live in colonies on the beaches of these countries and are not considered endangered. They are, however, popular among tourists and are showcased in zoos and aquariums around the world. Given they are penguins, these birds cannot fly and instead have flippers in place of wings as well as webbed toes. They are adept swimmers and feed on a plethora of fish species, squid, and other small sea creatures. To feed they stay inshore, but tagged penguins have shown that the LBP can dive as far as twenty meters down and remain submerged for a minute. The average, however, is usually two meters for twenty seconds.
