This is the thread for the Clear Skies rp, if you didn't guess.

Profiles:
Character name:
Race: (something that can fly, preferably. Magical levitation counts)
Class: (general description of what they do, Mage, ranger, fighter, etc)
Speciality: (what they're good at doing)
Description: (pics ok, but this description should be appearance, personality and equipment)
Anything else: (backstory, etc)
PostPosted: Fri Dec 23, 2011 6:05 pm

Character name: Acar
Race: Djinn
Class: Battlemage
Speciality: Destructive, enhancing and warding spells, hitting things with his big sword
Description: Acar is a human looking person from the waist up, except that his skin is a deep blue. From the waist down, his form disipates into mist. A wide belt circles his waist, so no one can see where his body ends and starts to dissipate. His wide curving blade sits in a special, magical sheath on his back, which allows him to pull it off quickly. His belt holds many pouches and a couple of wands, everything that he needs for his battle spells.
Acar is focussed and dedicated to the study of magic and bettering himself. He sees any chance to prove himself and his magic as an oppurtunity to push his boundaries. While he has a sense of humor, he doesn't show it. His voice is deep, his eyes dark grey and serious. Whenever he casts spells, his aura springs to life, surrounding him in an opaque blue light. If he focusses, he can form his aura into magic armor.
Anything else: Acar is an adventurer and has been to the ground below. As such, he has a much wider knowledge base than many of the other residents of Skyrn. While he is an accomplished swordsman, he much prefers to use his magic. As such, he imbues his weapon with various spells to help compensate for what he doesn't know.

(Continually edited post)

Do you need a co-runner or co-writer? I'm keen at helping establish histories, context and such. My character carries a flintlock blunderbuss (reminiscent of 18th century examples), is that okay? Also, perhaps the world could be covered in extraordinarily deep oceans and scattered with steep, inhospitable mountains where presumably dragons and other strange things live, perhaps even our quarry.

Also, we might need to establish what kinds of races we can be first up, perhaps by working up an RP context. It would be a tad incoherent if there were a half-dragon trekking with a "fallen angel", a lich berzerker and a dwarf-rogue-with-carefully-justified-levitation-ability. All of which I have seen played in RPs before and can imagine being played by people with such DND-maddened minds. xD

May I contribute a small amount of context to justify winged humans?

Harpies and skywalkers (generic term for any race that lives in the sky but cannot fly, such as humans, elves, etc.) have an uneasy relationship at best, but members of either group interbreed in dark alleys outside the loud skytaverns, at the ends of secret corridors to fetishist clubs and back-alley-traders, or in rare cases, genuine family-like relationships, rare due to the harpies' disposition to migrate. The children of these encounters are referred to colloquially as "halfies"; or "harplings" when distinction between half-castes of other races is necessary.

Despite public disdain for harpies, the higher-ups in Skyrn have been trying hard to welcome harpies to the city and boost opinion of them in Skyrn in an unspoken attempt to encourage interbreeding to a) gradually breed out the harpy threat, and b) have a powerful winged yet human-temperament army, to better combat the dragons and rocs that make semi-regular hit-and-run attempts on Skyrn's livestock and agricultural efforts. This strategy had only moderate success; about half of the resulting offspring of this endeavour inherited their mother's temperament, and were denied entry into the army, forced to find work in the few dark places where their kind was employable.

I would say that harpies in this context aren't as blatantly evil and unpleasant as they might appear in mythologies, but they would have a generally restless and migratory temperament not particularly conducive to mainstream Skyrn lifestyle, except in rare cases, mentioned above.

They would possibly have a) wings AND arms, b) arm-like wings with hands in the middle, or c) wings instead of arms, presumably with quite dexterous feet/talons. I leave that decision up to you or the next person it is relevant for.

I know age and gender aren't really necessary, but it's nice. I'll just leave this here, and get back to it quite shortly:

Character name: Gentian
Race: Harpling
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Class: Hunter, ex-Soldier
Speciality: Airborne fighting with ranged weapons is Gentian's specialty. He often brags of the time when he somersaulted through the air a couple of metres away from a Broadbelly Wyvern and "shot 'im in nine di'rent places", though his peers have yet to fathom how this is possible. Gentian also enjoys using deception tactics in combat, such as playing dead mid-air and using concealed items at the perfect moment, such as beer bottles filled with volatile liquids and oily rags.
Description: Gentian appears as a wiry, winged human. His wings are burgundy with grey streaks on the inside and black streaks on the outside. His fairly hollow face is beginning to wrinkle and his nose is slightly hooked.
He wears a brown leather tunic with polished metal scales on the shoulders and upper back, and there are various leather straps and pockets littered about his tunic for storing various things.
Gentian carries a quickloading flintlock pistol on his hip, an all-purpose crossbow built equally for accuracy and force across his back, and a heavy blunderbuss, carefully modified in Gentian's leisure time to store more gunpowder, hold more/heavier shot, and pierce even the toughest of armours, walls and dragonscales, at the expense of being deafeningly loud, tedious to reload, demanding of maintenance, and launching even the heaviest of heroes back several feet. Depending on Gentian's mood, he'll save his blunderbuss for either a seemingly-indomitable foe or barrier, or for blasting lesser foes into unrecognisable smithereens. Gentian also carries a paring knife with a 2 inch blade which he rarely uses as a weapon and often forgets he has. Just in case, he always says. He also carries some earmuffs.
Anything else: Gentian is not very talkative, and usually cares only to speak when spoken to, unless he is bragging about something. Sometimes he can be difficult to understand as he pays little attention to speaking Humantongue articulately. He also speaks Harps'aks'kr and has a minimal vocabulary in the tongue of the Northern Dragons (gleaned from an amicable elf in the army), enough to scare children and feign sorcery, but not enough to carry on a conversation.
Drunkenly conceived by a boil-blood, lustful harpy and a human back-alley-trader, Gentian turned out to be not quite the temperament that Skyrn was hoping for in its half-caste army. He was docile enough to be accepted and trained, but after about 10 years of service, the combination of his brilliant military gift and some of his more harpish traits (such as abandoning boring routines and disobeying command) put him in a strange de facto relationship with the force: he was a valuable asset, when he wanted to be. Currently Gentian hunts game for the army and is offered roles in the more "exciting" of military efforts. The High Lord hopes he will be able to convince Gentian to take on this extremely important campaign.

Hey, that's a really good idea and I get your point with the dnd adventurer types being too random. I would like it if people made their characters justifiable, like you just have.

I like that character, its definitely justifiable for the rp. I justify mine as he's a spell caster and has natural levitation abilities. And also probably studied with the high priestess or some other mages in Skyrn.

And yeah, a cowriter would be kinda cool, though with most of my rp's I do let people have some sort of control over the narrative. Someone else to help push the plot along would be nice, presuming we get any more people.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 29, 2011 8:32 pm

I was sort of thinking of helping with the backstory and context and a bit of history before the RP starts to help people create believable characters, but anything is cool. smile

Oh, and I think I've just about finished my character. Let me know if it's okay.

It would be a tad incoherent [...] a dwarf-rogue-with-carefully-justified-levitation-ability.

OKAY.

Also, I really like your idea of a half-caste army, so I'm running with it.

Character name: Nistar Aryeh
Race: Gullykin (also called Gnarfs, Halfies, and Gutterbloods )
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Class: Artificer
Speciality: Forging and creating magical items, item repair, mechanical mastery.
Backstory: Aryeh belongs to a hybrid race of gnome dwarfs. Created to be a support system, Aryeh belonged to a failed experiment: an attempt to create beings genetically altered to build airjammers. Nearly fifty years ago, a cabal of mages joined together, believing the Kingdom would descend into war. They planned to profit by building a fleet of airjammers, flying warships that they would sell to the highest bidder.

The Redsmiths began experimenting in the slums, often buying babies from impoverished women. Purchased before she was born, Aryeh was meant to produce and bend metals. She and other purchased children were put through the "Forging": dragged to the elemental planes, put through intense training, and on their seventh birthday had iron poured into their veins.

At seventeen Aryeh and three other Forged escaped. They parted ways soon after, hoping to avoid detection. Unable to fly, Aryeh hitchhiked her way across the world, using her skill with forging and mechanical engineering to earn passage. Eventually she settled with her own kin in The Gully: a series of hollows where a species of hybrid Dwarf Gnomes dwell. She apprenticed herself to Kovacs, a legendary Artificer hero. And for the past five years she learned from him, cleaned his tools, organized his libraries, and tended his orchard of metal trees.

Thus, when the request for heroes went out, Kovacs received an invitation. But the notice was delivered, only Aryeh was there to receive it. Kovacs had passed away four days before, midstroke on his final hammer.

Unwilling to stay where her master had died, Aryeh locked up Kovacs Forge, gathered her tools, and left for Lord Marcus's Hall.

Abilities: The experimentation performed on Aryeh gave her some unusual abilites: while she was never able to summon large amounts of iron like the Redsmiths wanted, she can produce small amounts of metal from her palms. It grows from a large veins of metal in her back. For years Aryeh was ashamed of her mark, hiding it and the metals it produced. It was Kovacs who changed her mind: after catching glints of metal in her skin, he asked Aryeh about it. She told him her history and expected to be turned away: who would want someone hunted by the Redsmiths? But instead he took her to his grove, where veins of iron, copper, silver, and other metals that he had cultivated into tree-like structures. He told Aryeh that her mark wasn't a scar, but another tree, and there was no reason to be ashamed.

Having spent most of her life around metals she is incredible tough and resistant to fire, but has trouble with any actual fighting. Aryeh usually relies on her weapons to do the fighting for her: ensorcelling them with magic. She can repair most any weapon or armor, as long as it's made of metal. She has an indepth knowledge of airjammers, cannons, and navigational instruments.

Aryeh has a large veins of metal running over her back, along her neck, and down her arms. She usually wears armor over it: while she is no longer ashamed, she doesn't want to advertise her location to the Redsmiths. Dark skinned with gold eyes, Aryeh is short and stocky. Usually wears her hair back to keep it out of the way of her forging.

I have a feeling our characters are going to get along. The picture you used doesn't remind me at all of something that a gnome and dwarf would sire, though; how tall are you? You look like a big woman. I did a google image search for "female gnome", and the first image that came up seems absolutely perfect, but to each his own.
http://images.wikia.com/wowwiki/images/b/bf/GnomeFemale.jpg

Also, in light of Dema's profile creation, I suggest we add that the few fertile parts of the few continents on the extremely oceanic planet have been completely dominated by the farms of very grounded folk, such as dwarfs, gnomes and other subterranean denizens, in order to be used to tame livestock, grow grain and fish the oceans, so that these honourable folk may sustain themselves on bread, fish, beef and beer.

So basically the only things that live on the surface of the planet are gnomes, dwarves and unsavoury subterranean humanoids, harpies on the more fertile of mid-height mountaintops, and dragons and other esoteric beings on the steep mountains that reach past the clouds.

Oh, Jer, feel free to edit any or all of this into the main RP page if you want, so people don't have to sift through the OOC.

There's not really scale in the picture is there? Yeah, that is confusing. I'm picturing about four and a half feet. I googled gnome, but all the ladies were kinda cutesy. It's a personal preference thing: I like ladies that look badass. So I went for dwarf instead. Personally I think she looks pretty dwarven: short, stocky, with some muscle. Also there are googles. I have a weakness for goggles.

I take no offense at your suggestion though.

I have no problem with any of this.

Surprisingly enough, I have no problems with any of this either. When I've got my main landline interwebs back up, I'll sift through it and change/add to the main thread, but for now, too tired, can't brain.

Dema, one question. Can she fly at all, even with magic?
