It wasn't unusual for Garrett to be seen walking the street like he owned it: hand resting easily on the pommel of his sheathed blade, he had a certain gait about him, a sauntering swagger that spoke of confidence. Of course, just what the man was confident about was up to any interpretation, as he didn't quite have a distinct caste that he fit into. His storm-grey double-breasted jacket's high collar brushed against his jaw, the pale cravat perhaps insinuating he was of noble blood, but it was easy to see from his slightly dusty snowy breeches and scuffed black riding boots that he was a working man. He had no patience or interest in living the life of the entitled, and truly, the only reason he wore the jacket was because it was bloody cold at night and he never knew when he'd be getting into a warm room before sundown. Just because he came from money didn't mean he had to wear it all pompous and self-righteous...even if he was a bit of the latter.

The man had skipped out on breakfast in favor of dallying in less altruistic matters that morning, and as such, he was rather hungry with lunch time fast approaching. Garrett enjoyed sampling the wares that the farmers had on display, but only with his eyes - he wasn't picky, but even he could spot a bruised fruit enough to question the rest of the goods. As such, he kept to a path in the middle of the road, green eyes flicking over people and produce alike until one or the other caught his attention. Some things - or more accurately, individuals - could be more important than food, after all.

It was to his surprise that the individual to catch his attention was neither woman nor man, but a boy; and not just any boy, but one that seemed to be of some lineage that shouldn't have been seen on his own. It was the type of thing that he wasn't unaccustomed to spotting in his line of work - who could deny a discount of free when available? - but the boy's sure smile and nimble fingers intrigued him. Pausing, Garrett stepped to the side and near by the golden-haired lad without getting in his way, waiting to see what he'd do next - or if he'd noticed he'd been caught.

He was a boy like any other who enjoyed rough housing with friends, skipping rocks over ponds, teasing the young girls in town, and playing tricks on his elders. The boy was undisputedly charming and witty, raised well enough to know what the rights and wrongs are, and clever enough to bend the rules befittingly. Family and friends who knew him well would use the term ‘devil’ on more than one occasion, his face no matter how pristine riddled with the mischief behind his eyes…but Edward was a child at the end of the day. And as a child, Edward could not deny himself the fun that all truly deserved.

It wasn’t his fault that ‘fun’ often involved a bit of stealing, a bit of bribery, and a bit of deceit. “Oi,” Edward cooed in as low of a voice he could muster, leaning away from the stand with a subtlety that its attendant would indefinitely overlook. In this same motion, the boys hand slid from the surface of the cart and into the nearest pant pocket, a staged collision with one of the many eager customers allowing for a relatively smooth escape.

He was usually an observant little tyke, blue eyes kept low yet still able to wash over the crowds of ravenous town folk, all bartering with as much aggression as they would fight. Perhaps it was his ego that let the man slip through the radar. Perhaps it was the accusatory yell from behind him as the cart attendant finally noticed a few of his goods missing…but as Edward spun away from one individual, his upward-turned nose met with another in as awkward of an embrace as could be imagined. The boys arms wrapped around the man’s mid-section out of surprise, releasing the fabric of the others coat just as soon as shock subsided. Stumbling back with one hand to his face, Edward writhed in pain for but a moment before tilting his head up and to the side.

While the look on the others face may have read ‘gotcha’, Edward was not one to give up so quickly. His brows furrowed apologetically, the hand that rubbed his nose now lifting to the back of his cap-covered head. “Oiii, I’m sorry Sir, I didn’t see you there.” Still avoiding the obvious, the boy continued. "The marketplace is always so busy! I understand now why Mum never wants to make the trip." His laughter was geniune, as the truth of the matter was just that. His mother hated the marketplace.
