It was official, Venice had finally made it.

It wasn't the final unpacking of a box, or her first day in Sovereign Heights or the beginnings of a new friendship. It wasn't anything so meaningless. It was her promotion to team captain of the Destiny City Devils. Her new pride and joy. Her baby.

It wasn't surprising Venice had pushed her way up to the top of this team, she knew as soon as she was moving to DC that she was going to join the local Roller derby team and had even emailed the former captain weeks before she had left England. They knew her before she had even arrived. And thats how she liked it, she was a storm in life as she was on the ring. The other team saw, heard and felt her thundering towards them and they didnt stand a chance. It was only a matter of time before her strategies and team work paid off. Captain Venice. It had a nice ring to it.

But of course with every high management role came high responsibility and Venice, if she liked it or not, was now in charge of brining in the fresh meat. And baby was she going to bring home the bacon. Today was audition day for the DeeCee Devils and Venice was not going home till she found her next killer stars.

"Ok girls listen up! Everyone in group B and D go with Sally and Jane, she's going to go over the formal papers, interviews etc. The lucky ladies in team A are with Raquel and C are with me! We're going to do those exciting interviews your all dying to do and then some boring laps around the ring!" Pointing a finger she aimed at the groups one by one and flicked her wrist towards the direction they should leave. Each group had 3 girls in them, not a major turn out for a city so big but Venice wasn't picky, she needed this girls if her team was to remain on top in the tournaments and she needed at least four of them to shine today.

Table and chairs were already set up for the interviews and while the girls stood around chatting Venice made herself comfy with a smoke in one hand and a pen in the other. Shouting out she called the first name on the list to attend her table. "Porsha Webber! Get your skinny a** over here!"
PostPosted: Thu Dec 22, 2011 9:49 am

"Skinny a**? What the ******** ever." Porsh didn't even bother lowering her voice as she grumbled, it would have defeated the purpose. Her as was quite luscious for a white chicks, thank you very much. She might have have had an excess of junk in her trunk, but she enough to hold onto, and that was really all you needed.

She wasn't truly insulted by the comment, not really. Sure she'd bitched, but she was grinning as she got to her feet and moved to join the captain at her table. Making herself as comfortably as she could in a folding metal chair. That involved an impressive amount of slouching, her hands folding over her stomach, and her ankles crossing beneath the table. Her ability to throw of casual insubordination was renowned.

"What's shakin' capt?" Whether or not she truly cared if she got a spot on the team was hard to tell. She'd made the effort to haul her a** down there in the cold, even shelled out the money for the bus, so clearly she felt it was worth her time, but you couldn't tell by her attitude or behavior if she were actually interested, or if she'd just thought the try out would provide a bit of fun.

Considering what the sport offered though, it was a fair bet she cared a little more then she was letting on. Poe liked fighting, it was her favorite hobby, and roller derby was pretty much brawling on wheels.

Venice had to stifle a smirk as the girl plonked herself down on the chair, teenage anguish blazing on all cylinders as she made her retort about the a** remark. Oh god Venice could see herself in this girl, several years younger of course but defiantly the rebellious streak she had been known for. She couldn't help to fan the fire a little more.

"That's Mr Captain to you kid! Now Porsha, hippy parent I presume, you know anything about this sport? What it entails? Pretty thing like you is going to get beat up pretty bad out there, you ready for that sort of punishment?"

It didn't sound like an interview at any rate more a swapping of insults but Venice wanted to see how the girl would react. The main thing about this team was they were a family. You couldn't have someone insulting you after being hit in the face with a elbow or god forbid losing a match. They all had to be their for each other, even if of course a few gentle slagging matches were encouraged, heck Venice started them!

"How old are you anyway? Twelve? The standard age for this team is eighteen. Your gonna have to show me some pretty big fireworks before I consider you."

It was strange hearing the student being so formal and bossy, it wasn't like Venice to give a serious not to anything but now she was captain a little bit of strictness was demanded. These were her girls after all.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 22, 2011 10:48 am

The lazy smile that had blossomed into place on Poe's plum painted lips only seemed to spread as the Captain corrected her informal, and rude, acknowledgement. "Aye aye sir, anything you say." She had called herself mister after all, so really, Poe was just giving her what she'd asked for.

As far as knowing the sport? The teen had a fair idea for the basics, but aside from that she was mostly clueless. "Skate around a track and kick the s**t out of each other to score points?" She was sort of right, but there was a lot more two it then that, and even Poe knew that.

Though it wasn't technically a compliment, Poe took the pretty comment as such, grin broadening. If Venice thought the rebellious teen was a stranger to violence, she'd be sorely mistaken. "Lady, I take that sort of punishment on a weekly biases. I can take anything you can dish out, and serve it right back at you." Cocky? Yes, but she had good reason to be. Poe had been fighting since before she'd reached double digits in age, and with the help of some after school programs she was pretty damn good at kicking the s**t out of people.

"And I'm 17," she frowned at the jab at her age, then rolled her shoulders in a careless shrug. "Or 18, whichever you like best."

She sat up when Venice mentioned fireworks, fingers curling into a loose fist in her lap as the other hand came to cradle it. She resisted a very serious urge to quote Katy Perry, and instead did her best to just look eager. If the captain wanted fireworks, then that was what she would get.

It was what she asked for! Venice was a strange, strange creature and defiantly not one to follow social norms so being called sir or mister suited her just fine! It was good to see the girl was listening as well and every comment she ticked a box, there may be hope yet!

"Ha! text book explanation but yes there is more to the game than beating the living snot out of each other, if anything its a common misconception that that is what the game is only about. A Blocker is the one who gets the most action, their goal is to block the other teams Jammer from passing scoring a 'goal'. Jammers are the people who score the points and then finally you have the Pivot, essentially a blocker but can become a Jammer if needs be. Jane is our gorgeous Pivot so were not looking for anyone to fill her place right now but then again any Blocker can become a Pivot so if you end up in that role it will be good to study up on game strategies, a Pivot has to have a good head on her shoulders and not just brawn...but of course I don't expect you to remember that now, plenty of time for rules and such later."

This girl could breath through her ears the way she talked without stopping! What was more surprising was that she could still smoke at the same time as explaining it all. She tapped the growing ash end into a small clay pot beside a pile of paper and exhaled deeply. If anyone was pissed off with her dirty habit they kept it to themselves.

"Seventeen huh? Well that's not as bad as I thought but you know you will need permission of your folks before joining us? If you get that far of course." She added with a sarcastic grin, blowing smoke directly above the girls head as she said it. She looked like sort of housewife dragon as she finished the cigarette and stubbed it out, standing up from her chair as she went signalling for the girl to follow.

"We have five girls in a team, at least three extras. We have taken a beating in the last few week with four of my girls leaving and we need to make up the numbers fast, the next tournament is in 12 weeks and we haven't got long to train you up. You need to have some natural talent sweetie." She led the girl to the side of the ring, a shabby looking race track several feet of the ground. On any normal night there would be eleveated seats where they were standing for the ticket holders but for now it had been cleared away for training. A small set of step rested against the track and this was where Venice stopped.

"Here, put on these skates unless you have your own, which you will need to buy eventually if picked. Tell me a little about yourself, why you want to join and then we'll get up on the track, see what your made off." She had gestured to an array of old skates as she grabbed her own, strapping into them effortless like they were a pair of slippers, she motioned for the girl to do the same.

When Venice talked, Porsha actually listened. Taking mental notes on the more intricate details to the game that she hadn't known about previously. So the blockers were the ones that got the most action? Sounded like a wonderful position for the ballsy teen. She wasn't very large or opposing, but what she lacked in size, she made up to in know how and pure spunk. Pivot didn't sound too bad of a role either, but the team already had one.

When the captain mentioned needing permission to join, the teen only smiled, doing her best not to smirk. So long as Poe didn't have to physically drag her mother down here to sign something, getting a signature on a permission slip wasn't going to be difficult, she'd been forging her mom's sig for years now.

Like it was hard when there was nothing else to compare it to.

Venice beckoned, and the teen rolled up to her feet and followed, hands slipping into her back pockets. She eyed the track, then dropped her attention down to the skates, smile slipping just slightly. She hadn't been wheels of this sort in a very long time. Hopefully it was a lot like riding a bike, and once you learned you never forgot.

Perching on the steps, Poe grabbed a few sets of skates, looking at the sizes printed on the inside of the tongue, then pulled a pair on when she found one her size. They weren't half as fancy as the ones the other woman had strapped on, but as Porsha got to her feet she could tell they'd been taken care of. The wheels spun easily, there was no wobble. She pressed her toe into the ground to keep from rolling off, then returned her hands to her back pockets, hip jutting to one side. Perpetual attitude, Porsha had it.

"Well, Now that I'm out of school," read, drop out. "I find myself with a lot of free time, and not enough things to fill it with. I've been taking classes for self defense and various other styles of fighting over the years, never really focusing on one or another, but rather soaking in a lot from many. I like fighting, dancing, some sports, and I hate loosing." She rolled her shoulders in a shrug, lips pursed.

Venice listened with a half cocked smile, this girl was her! Just younger and slimmer....maybe even prettier but she wasn't about to announce that little fact to her. There was one thing she could tell from the girls attitude and that was she had too much. Compliments no matter how earned would just go straight to her head. She didn't need a miss know it all on her team and she wasn't about to have a bully either. This girl could go either way.

"Oh? Not going to college are we? God I remember leaving school for the first time too but at thirteen and when I say left I mean expelled and when I say expelled I mean arrested......and when I mean arrested I mean driven out of town with pitch forks and fire.....that last part didn't happen but best. time. of my life. You'll never get these years back so don't give up too much on education, like I said we need smart girls as much as brawn on my team."

Venice just laid down some motherly advice, hell would freeze over soon. She watched for a few more seconds before bounding up the steps off the rink. Although it was a flat pack rink it was decent and could hold up to ten powerful girls burning round the track night after night. It was well used but like the shoes well loved. It had just been cleaned and was ready to use. Slopped and dangerous to get to the middle flat ground the girls had put a large plank of wood with smaller wood stoppers so they could tread carefully into the safe zone. Here Porsha would be able to go on the lower edge of the ring, the safest part for someone to practice, the steeper edges would come later. Throwing out a hand, Venice offered it for support. It was hardly steep but trying to work the steps to get on and over the ledge were tricky in flats let alone boots of death.

"Mind yourself, I am not about to have broken limbs today, we find mummies and daddies frown on that sort of thing."
Another dig at her age but it didnt really bother Venice. Like she had said all along she just had to prove herself.

"When you ready I want you to do at least five laps around the rink, dont go high on the corners just yet, i want to see speed and stamina. If you work out as much as you say I dont see their being a problem at all! Now skinny, get that a** in gear! Go, go, go!"

[For reference = rink

"Collage? No." She didn't even have to think about it. "I stuck with school up until my last year in high school, but the teachers and I didn't really see eye to eye." She'd done just fine with her homework, she'd even maintained good grades, but the ladies in charge had not appreciated Poe's penchant for picking fights between classes. She'd been suspended a few times, told she'd have to repeat the grade due to missing too much class, and respectively told them all they could go fornicate themselves.

"Trust me, I'm more then just a pretty face and a wicked left hook." She grinned, then turned her concentration down to the steps as she made her way up them as carefully as possible. Falling or twisting an ankle would certainly not impress the captain.

She continued her careful progress until she was down in the middle of the rink, silver eyes rolling at the jab to her age. Yes, she was young, but not that young.

"Stamina, I've got that." Speed? They'd see. On foot, sure, Poe could sprint with the best of them, but on skates? She wasn't sure yet.

Her first few rolling steps were cautious, and probably didn't convey a whole lot of confidence, but she wasn't about to rush into it and fall on her a**. When she had gathered her balance she moved to pick up speed, falling into the familiar motion after a moment or two. It was kind of like riding a bike, and she did recall the mechanics once she was on the move. That was satisfying.

Growing a little more bold she put on a bit more speed, steadily increasing her pace through out the first of the two laps before simply working on maintaining smooth rhythm and steady speed. It might not have been as fast the other girl's trying out, but it was the first time she'd been on skates in years. The more she practiced, the better she'd get.

When she finished the last lap she let herself slow gradually before rolling back into the center and stopping in front of Venice.

Venice couldn't stop smiling! If she had a wig and some smaller clothes of hers lying around she would be dressing this girl up and teaching her to smoke. It would be so cute! But highly, highly, awkward... and she must find a way to do it. But there was no time to think of such things right now! Porsha had stepped onto the ring and was away, slower than Venice would have liked, but ok. The sudden thought that she hadn't practice hit her as she twisted around on her skates, but then again of course she wouldn't have practice! she either got it the first time or didn't, well thats how Porsha's attitude came across at least.

But she was steady and that was what counted, speed could come later but you needed good ground work first and a decent technique to skating. Venice could over look the fact she hadn't come fully prepared but it was something that would defiantly change. She was ready with open arms for her mini-me to stop as she applauded loudly before throwing an arm over her shoulder.

"Well done! A little slow but i think you know that, I wont be putting you up for a jammer any time soon but a blocker, now there's something you could do! You seem to be really steady on your feet, i don't think i saw you wobble once! And as this seems to be your first time back on skates in years I am even more impressed! Yeah girl I can tell, you don't eat, breath and fart this sport without sensing a rookie a mile away!" She was only joking of course, Venice was more than happy with her performance and was getting more excited about the whole prospect of having a kid on the team.

"You could be our secret weapon! No one is going to look twice at you and then BAM! You come slamming into that jam like a bat out of hell! Haha, its going to be so good!"

She pulled the girl along to a table set up in the middle of the ring, a few girls were mulling about, some where waiting for their time on the track and others were filling out paperwork. This was why Venice had brought her over.

"Porsha meet my blockers Raquel and Jane, she is the one who can also act as a Jammer if needed but is called a Pivot....its all very confusing but don't worry about it for now! Sally is the Jammer and she is off somewhere doing jamming things. NOW! I want to see how you can take a beating but uhh....I sort of need you to give us permission...and since your age is a problem we of course need a guardian to say its ok, so.....bugger."

The two girls that had walked up while Venice's spoke were both into alternative fashion. Raquel had her head shaved completely, her body decorated with tattoos to within an inch of her life, where Jane was a pretty brunette with a few old piercings here and there. She seemed out of place but was obviously ecstatic to be here by the way she bounced over to grab Porsha into a frantic hug.

"Vee! She is so cute! I'll race with her if you want! You don't mind a little bit of bruising do you?" Its was obvious the only answer was going to be a no but Venice shook her head slowly.

"We can't....well.....we can...but, seriously Porsha, you might get hurt out there, you sure you want to do this? I won't talk you out of it if you do but i will not be held accountable!" She pushed a piece of paper across the table. It was a standard document stating the team wouldn't be held accountable for injuries sustained during any practice or match. All Porsha had to do was sign.
PostPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2012 10:48 am

Porsha caught Venice's arm when it was offered out as a convenient means of stopping, but once she'd stopped rolling she let go, once again decently balanced on wheels she hadn't been on in ages. There was something to be said the balance of a practiced fighter, she assumed that was helping a great deal with keeping her upright. Either way, she was happy with herself for not falling on her a** in front of the captain, and despite her ragging on her speed, Poe got the sense the other girl had been at least mildly impressed.

"It's a little impressive you could figure that out with a glance, but you're right. I haven't touched skates in years, not since I grew out of the pair I had when I was 12." A little too much sharing, but whatever. She'd liked skating when she was younger, frequenting the roller rink and tearing up the sidewalks around the city, but once her teens hit, those sort of carefree hobbies just kinda fell to the wayside.

She grinned as Vee mentioned her being a secret weapon. "I could do that." It happened often enough. People were always discounting her as too small, or weak, and she took great pleasure in laying them all out on their asses.

Poe let herself roll along easily as Vee pulled her around to a table, and she glanced at all the girls gathered around it, curious which were already on the team and which were here to try out like she was. It became obvious which was which though when they were introduced to her, and she offered a smile or her hand wherever needed. Exchanging pleasantries.

Mention of the release form had her rolling her eyes though. "Bruises don't bother me, I've already got my hair share." They were just all currently covered up, but they were certainly there. "I already told you, I can handle anything you can dish out." She glanced down at the paper pushed in her direction, then added her signature without hesitation. Then added her mother's signature just as fluidly.

Bingo.

That was all Venice needed to see, hear and witness from Porsha to be given respect well deserved. Maybe not the right sort of thing to gin respect from but either way Venice was happy and by the grinning faces of the other girls everyone else was too.

"Heh, you've done that before Missy!" She stated as she grabbed the paper and studied the signature before letting it fall back to the table. "Hehee show time..." Jane was already pulling the girl towards the track as Venice sat herself down on the table and lit up a smoke as the audience gathered. It was no surprise that a small crowd had developed to watch Porsha take on Jane, a seasoned derby girl vs the rookie with an attitude. This was going to be fun.

"Ok skinny, I want you to race against my star girl, after three laps Jane is going to take lead and you need to pass her. She of course is going to stop you from doing just that. She is not allowed to use her hands, elbows, head or feet...i still cant see how someone can nut you while skating but anyway! She can only hit the areas between your mid thigh and shoulders. too so no leg sweeps or anything. You on the other hand can not attack her, rear blocking can not happen, only from the sides and the front. All we want you to do today is pass her and if your feeling up for it you can try and keep her from passing you by but only if you really want to show off!"

Jane had placed herself just behind the white starting line and slapped a friendly hand on her shoulder, it was meant to reassure but if anything it showed the power the woman had in her arms. "Don't worry, I wont be too mean on ya!" The crowd settled down, the room went semi-silent. It was time and Venice was more than egar for this show to be on the road.

"Ha, Ready, Set, GO!"

[OCC: I thought a bit of dice fun may be in order for this part!

Roll 1 10 sided dice if you just want to try and pass her, roll 2 if you wanted to try and block as well!

1st dice: 1 - 6 = You passed flawlessly, 7 - 9 = You got some nasty shots to the chest but passed eventually, 10 = You were unable to pass!

2nd dice: 1 - 3 = You blocked her! Amazing! 4 - 7 = Unable to block but you got in some decent hits! 8 - 10 = She sailed right past you! ]
Beejoux rolled 2 10-sided dice: 5, 9 Total: 14 (2-20)

(Omg this is forever old.)

Po let herself be pulled away from the table and towards the track, one hand raised to wiggle her fingers towards Venice, a silly grin on her face. Okay, so she'd forgotten how fun being on wheels could be, and she was feeling pretty confident about what she was about to attempt. Despite being unsteady on skates.

She figured it was probably like riding a bike. Once you learned, you never really forgot, and it was only a matter of getting your barrings back before you were doing wheelies and riding no handed. Okay, so maybe not the same thing, but hopefully the same principle.

The hand that connected with her shoulder as they got into position startled the teen. It was nothing but a reassuring pat, but that palm had come down with force, and all at once Po realized just what she was up against, and if she had any hope of getting around this woman, she was going to have to pull out all the stops. So getting her game face on, the teen hunkered down into a position she hoped would help her launch forward, and waited.

Venice gave the start, and Jane was pelting forward like a bat out of hell, and Po stared after her dumbstruck for all of a second before putting wheel to the track and taking off after her. The b***h was fast, Porsha had been right about never really forgetting how to skate. It took half a lap, but she got her legs under her and sorted out, and once she found her balance she was speeding forward after the other woman.

Within seconds she'd managed to not only catch up, but pass Jane with a combination of luck and relearned skills, but her delight and smugness for having passed Venice's little test was short lived as the other woman sailed right back up on her heels and did all in her power to pass the teen. She did it, but Po managed a few nice shots at Jane before she'd managed to pull ahead.

Venice watched with apt fascination as she monitored the girls speed with a well hidden stopwatch in her hand. She didn’t like to point out that she was timming the applicants as it often led to accidents of the nervous kind and there was no need to mop up blood today. Porsha clearly had speed and balance something obviously required in this sport but it was her sheer determination that won Venice over. Even though she hadn’t blocked Jane there was still an eagerness to shine below that moody teenage surface and Venice could see potential. Great potential.

“Ha! Nice one Porsha! Jane get your tubby a** into more training sessions and maybe the newbie’s wont be kicking it so hard!” As a missile that looked something akin to a just worn skating boot sailed past Venice’s head she ducked and moved to where Porsha had rolled to a stop, her dusty hand reaching out to pat her on the back.

“Seriously though, some nice moves up there. I think you would be a fantastic jammer, with a little more practice no one up there will be able to touch you.” Slipping her hand over her tiny shoulders Venice pulled her into a one sided grip as she gestured to the warehouse they were in. Before them were groups of girls laughing and joking, some tying up boots or fanning out tutus as they added their own spice to their uniform. The grand track stood before them and an echo of cheering from by-gone battles echoed from the empty stands, at least in Venice’s mind that is. But the atmosphere of friendship, fun and above all competition tinged the room and the derby girl hoped Porsha could sense it too.

“Watcha say Po? Wanna be one of my gorgeous Devils? The jobs yours if you want it, of course it comes with all the free nacho cheese and spandex pants you could want! I have a very good feeling about you my dear; I can already see you being my favourite!”
