This is Private RP between Bataar [Kayakurai] & SiMa Li [Chrystali].

Setting
Out on the docks, Li finds Bataar engaged in a rather...unusual hobby.
PostPosted: Wed Dec 21, 2011 6:44 pm

Lunaria save her soul, but Li was still reeling.

It wasn't that she had any great love for the Emperor or His Generals, but to know the figurehead of their city -- their world -- was dead, was still alarming. And who knew how long it'd been since the Emperor had departed the mortal coil? No one would know unless a Spirit Conduit could get in to ask, but even then, it might be too late. The war had only deepened and yet...Li still felt herself on the outskirts, on the outside looking in and watching everything crumble with alarming speed. Li sat on her wall of grey while everyone else donned their black and white attire to do battle. She wasn't even sure where the supposed 'neutral guard' stood in all this, if they were honest in their intention or if they were just at the marionette strings of one of the deciding factions. It was probably one of the only reasons she hadn't defected.

With her hands clasped at the small of her back, the Legionnaire took long but measured steps through the dock, trying to clear her mind and see the faces of her kin. Most of them were writ with the same marks she had seen that day on the cherry tree hill: fear, loathing, anger and a dark sense of nothingness. She herself often wore the placid neutrality on her face like a mask, but today, she was a little raw. Today, she was still healing from both her physical and mental trauma. Today, things ought to have been different, but she was still struggling to come to terms with what had happened. Even there on the docks, she could still smell the charred flesh in her nose, could still feel the soot on her hands as she lowered the bodies of the burned Nobles. Li needed a distraction, or at least, a reaffirmation to where she stood in all the chaos.

And unwittingly, she found that exact distraction not that far ahead. The Lunarian's size and girth made him near impossible to not notice, his dark hair and skin equally as attention-grabbing amongst the sea of otherwise colorful kinsmen. Cocking her head to the side, the lotus-haired Li shifted her weight onto one leg to more slowly round the fur-laden male, curiosity lighting her amethyst gaze.

Bataar did not think that he had ever seen a creature nobler than this. The rat's size, its stature, its dignity-- all were absolutely perfect. That was the reason he'd chosen to chase the creature thus far along the stretch of docks that defined the capital city's main trading routes to the other islands that made up Lunaria. He had just seen the creature that he was after skitter into a decently-sized cargo crate and he was currently digging through the contents in order to locate the animal, which was approximately the size of a small cat in his esteemed opinion. Collecting rats was just something that Bat did when the need arose, and the hobby was extremely stress-relieving.

Thoughts of the emperor who was dead, thoughts of Lunaria turned upside-down-- those were not things that he felt the need to preoccupy himself with when he wasn't completing some task or other for his demanding superiors. Right now it was Bataar-time. It was man-time, and man-time involved tracking down only the cutest of the world's furry, scaly-tailed creatures. It was a system that tended to work very well for the behemoth despite the people that he tended to scare and enrage along the way.

"Where did you go?" he demanded, tossing some packing straw away as he continued his hunt through the crate, which was full of tea cups. These rats could be very unpredictable.

And how intent the lumbering form of a man was in pawing up the dregs of whatever might have been in the unfortunate crate! Li was rarely one for the destruction of another's goods, but there was something deeply comical about the large, decidedly wide man heaving straw this way and that out of a modest sized crate. Repressing her own smile, she was debating going on her way when his voice reached her ears, only serving to pique her curiosity further. What could someone possibly lose in what seemed to have been a relatively sealed crate?

Deciding to stay put, she was the recipient of a face full of packing straw, earning a soft sound of surprise and a quieter, bemused chuckle as she set about picking the golden strands out of her pale hair. "Seems a priceless thing to have lost, my Lord," she remarked by means of greetings, looking at one of the broken pieces of straw that she twirled between her fingers, still wearing a few strands in her locks, "might I be of service?" Li thought it might be of a better standard - or at least, more polite - if she could spare some of the fragile objects within that clinked just barely audible with the jostling. That, and perhaps spare anyone else from wearing a golden crown of straw such as she was.

Bataar growled in frustration, his green eyes narrowed as he took a moment just to stare into the blackness of the crate. He knew that the rat was hiding in there, but it seemed impossible that he hadn't already rifled through the entirety of the contents. It would be a terrible shame if he'd lost the magnificent creature, however. It was almost enough to make a grown man shed a tear or two and he hoped desperately that he'd still be able to locate it.

He reached his arm back in and felt, for the briefest of moments, a squirming creature that seemed very alive. That was his target! He shouted in excitement and thrust both of his arms into the crate, most definitely breaking one or two tea cups in the process as he tried to get a hold of the creature's scaly tail. He was definitely close-- he could feel it! The animal had to be cornered and this point in time and-- someone interrupted him.

He jerked around and regarded the student for a moment, his expression indignant. "What? Don't call me that." he huffed, feeling really rather cross. "You've distracted me! I almost caught the fellow, too." he growled, ignoring the fact that he'd clearly thrown star at the other Lunarian and keeping his eye rather hawkishly upon the crate in case the rat tried to make an escape of some sort.

The sudden lunge was met with a quick hand to her lips and a slight jolt, her amethyst eyes wide in an attempt to not laugh at how the whole scene was playing out. To her, the giant man seemed to be akin to an over-sized feline, his meat-hook-like paws seeking something within the crate so avidly. Despite the sudden turn-about of the other, Li couldn't help but jerk back at the look she was imparted, almost as alarming as the 'fellow' comment. So the great cat was in fact seeking something living - his mouse, as it were.

She was rather stunned to be told to not address someone politely, and as such, was somewhat tongue-tied. Instead of searching for words and standing there as helpless as could be, she glanced around the immediate vicinity, spotting a display blanket on the very stall that the teacups were likely to have been displayed on (assuming any were left). Seizing the item, she yanked it off the wooden frame and nimbly squeezed behind the crates, setting her foot on one of them to balance herself. Draping the blanket over the side and back of the crate, she tucked it underneath, blocking any holes that might have been used to flee the large feline-man's grasp.

"There we are," she said with some amount of contentment. Lifting her pale brows at the other, she indicated the crate with her own calloused hands. "By all means! Catch your fellow!"

He was so close! He could almost taste it and-- well, to relate a sense of taste with the situation was probably very detrimental. Bataar would avoid that. Eyeing up the girl and deciding that she was of no use to him, the captain went back to groping through the box in search of the prized rat that he'd been so desperately wanting. It was as if his life hinged on his ability to obtain the small, squirming creature; nothing would be complete until this was.

He spotted the girl approaching again and grimaced, feeling terribly distracted as she stoppered the holes of the crate using a stolen blanket. He removed his hands from the crate in order to regard her, his expression deeply bewildered. "That's like cheating." he declared, swiping bits of hay off of his palms as he glared disdainfully at the blanket. Chasing rats was all about the game, and the technique-- that was what Bataar supposed he loved about it. It was a matter of manliness.

All the same, it would be so simple if he were to keep the blanket there. "Why're you here, anyway?" the man asked, sitting down and keeping an eye on the crate just in case the rat chose to make its escape. It was worth asking why a student would come up and help him so simply; people didn't normally like to approach Bataar quite as candidly.

The large male's indignation with her was met with a clearly bemused smile. "Perhaps for you," she conceded, "but with my distraction in the fray, I'd hardly want you to lose your prize because of my interruption." Gesturing to the crate, she rolled her broad shoulders indifferently. "I may be rude by trying to be polite, but I wont deny a man his goal by my presence. Consider it the anti-me for your chase." Brushing off her hands, she set about picking the straw out of her hair again, idly tossing it aside while her eyes flit with languid interest between the man and his source of obsession.

The question, though abrupt, was met with more bewilderment. "If you'd rather I not be, I can arrange that," she responded with the same good-humored tone, "but I'm here because it's where I am when I'm not home. If you mean here, by you, it's because you stand out like a dark cat amongst a jungle of color. As you seek that which interests you, it was as good a reason as any for me to stop." Not waiting to be invited to sit, Li nudged one of the other crates out and set about climbing them, only taking a seat when she was perched on a set that let her oversee the docks. Still pulling golden strands from her hair, she countered, "Why are you here? I haven't seen you before. I'd remember someone of your size."

Bataar's lips were rather contorted upon his face as he tried to decide upon some sort of opinion with which to label this girl. She seemed extremely confident about the fact that she'd been trying to help, but he was still having trouble reading her. What if this was some sort of horrible rat sabotage of some sort? He didn't think he'd be able to tolerate such a thing. All the same, the other Lunarian didn't look as if she wanted a fight. "Well, you are rude." he muttered unhappily, plunging his arm back down into the crate for a moment and coming up, for the time being, with nothing.

Bat wasn't enjoying the fact that the girl seemed to be skirting around his question(as far as he was concerned; he wasn't too perceptive when it came to these things) but he decided to take a stance of toleration toward her. She didn't seem to mean anything particularly bad by her actions, after all. "I'm hunting." he declared, balling his hand into a fist and briefly flexing his straw-covered forearm to indicate the seriousness of his pursuit.

He wasn't entirely certain that he wanted to let this girl in on his hobby; it was serious stuff, rat collecting. It took guts.

Arching a dark brow over a bright eye, she watched the other Lunarian think. He almost seemed to be waiting for something, or expectant - perhaps he was used to some sort of greeting she was unfamiliar with, but Li never pretended to be versed in the know-how of all cultures on Lunaria. Then again, maybe he was just waiting for her to leave. He was busy, after all. Destroying tea cups was a hard day's work, it seemed. The revelation that he was hunting something didn't seem to make matters anymore understandable or obvious to her, as the things worth 'hunting' by normal standards would hardly fit in a crate of delicate wares. Li was guessing by looking at the gruff male that 'normal' was not one of the words in the man's vocabulary.

"What," she asked, either oblivious to his lack of willingness to share or simply not heeding it, "in Lunaria's name are you hunting in a crate of broken tea cups?" Pulling out the last piece of straw that she could get to without letting her hair down, she tossed it idly to the side and fixed her amethyst stare on the beast of a man. He was positively massive and she could not blame the object of his attention for hiding from the meat-hooks that he called hands. Whatever it was he was after had to be small, and to see something of the Lunarian's lumbering size coming after them... "And I hope you're not bleeding all over your quarry. Unless it's attracted to blood, anyway," she added in quiet bemusement.

Bataar was certainly far from normal when it came to Lunarians. He tended to be the (unfortunate) exception to almost every social convention, as dictated by most of the friends he'd made over the years living in the Imperial City. The man didn't particularly mind this classification, and certainly didn't view it as an issue; whatever sense of normalcy he must have once had had most certainly been abolished in the early years of his youth. Social convention, therefore, was not his forte.

Oh, questions! Were they always so necessary? He guessed he would have to answer someday. "I am hunting..." Bataar began, allowing himself a pause as he snatched at something deep within the crate, finally pulling out the creature that he'd come here for in all its squirming glory. "...pet rats!" And so here it was: the truth.

The captain examined the rat in his hand carefully before deeming it an absolutely perfect specimen. In all honesty, he was expecting the girl to run away that this point. Most people he knew, for whatever inexplicable reason, absolutely hated rats. Bat personally thought that this was an awful misjudgment when it came to the animals' characters, but it was near impossible to convince one of the many who had targeted rats with their brand of hate. He was just waiting for the scream.

This great behemoth of a Lunarian, this manner-challenged being of great stature and experience was hunting...rats? Li was far from what she'd consider a master of her emotions, but she was versed in the art of keeping well enough to herself, especially when the object of her almost-mirth could bench-press her with his pinky. Her lips pursed, but deciding that looked too disapproving, she allowed herself to smile, the likes of which dimpled her cheeks in her attempt to not simply break out into laughter. Drawing in a few steadying breaths through her nose, she had to take a moment to wrestle her amusement out of any outward show of mirth before she could speak again. "Well aren't you just a darling!" she finally was able to coo, the effort of which made her grin widely. "And I don't mean you, sir, I mean the rat."

The only scream he'd get out of her was of peels of laughter, and that was hardly something she'd do in private, let alone the dockside. She made no attempt to approach the burly Lunarian or his prize, instead admiring the sizable rodent from her vantage point, quite content on her throne of crates. Uttering a low whistle barely under her breath, Li nodded gravely to the rat. "And he is an impressive one. Could probably take on a cat and eat it for supper, judging by the size of it."

Cocking her head to the side, she puckered her lips and blew a stray piece of pale locks from her eyes before smiling again, quite against her better judgement. "If you hunt pet rats, I can only imagine your collection." Pausing, one eye squinted as her lips curved to the side in a soft 'tsk!' sound. "Then again, maybe not..."
