Zachary opened one of his teal eyes to look around the cave, he could not make out any details of the area, for it was too dark to see anything clearly. It did not appear that light from the outside world could penetrate the blackness; the stallion looked over to Neela who still had her head on his shoulder, he smiled down at her, “Neela, it is time to wake up, I think it is morning.” Zach could hear the faint bird song echoing through the cave.

Neela groaned and instinctively nuzzled her head into him. "Is not, it's still dark. Go back to sleep." Obviously still half asleep anyway, she probably forgot where she was exactly. But after a few minutes she opened her eyes, and tried to get them to adjust. Most of it was starting to come back.. and who she was currently very snuggly with. She jumped back, smacking her head into the rock. "Oww, ow ow. I'm sorry. I-I um.. I guess I don't have a good explanation for that.. I.." She cleared her throat and decided it was probably best to stop talking.

Zach’s eyes widened in shock as she started to nuzzle him, but he did not comment against it, for it felt very nice, but he knew that she probably had forgotten where she was. When she moved away from him and smacked her head on the rocks, his eyes opened in worry, “Are you okay? How hard did you hit your head? I understand, don’t need to explain yourself,” he gave her a small smile. “C’mon, let’s go see what the outside world transformed into while we slept.” He stood up and kept his eye on Neela, making sure she was okay after that nasty bump she took against the rock.

"I don't think it's bleeding, guess I just startled myself.." She stood up with him and did feel a dull throbbing in her head. Perfect way to start the day. She walked with him through the cave and stopped short at the entrance. Throbbing head forgotton, she stared out at the white that covered everything and the small flakes still falling to add to it. With an excited little squeal she leaped out into the snow and bounded through it like a deer.

He kept an eye on her as they made their way out of the cave and entered a snow covered world; his breath came out in an excited shock, white powder coated the world. The same area they had passed through last night transformed into a winter wonderland. With a laugh he followed Neela into the snowy world, blending into the white frozen substance, except for contrast of his dark purple hair.

"Isn't it wonderful?" She shouted as she spun around, small white flakes clinging to her mane. For a moment she couldn't spot him, and if the snow had been falling harder she never would have found him, even with his hair. "Almost lost you!" She bounced her way back over to him. "I just love the snow. I don't know what it is but I just think its fantastic."

Zachary poked his head out of a snow bank and blinked, “It is truly amazing, I have not played in the snow since I was a foal. I guess you were right about me blending in,” he laughed, enjoying the feeling of excitement that was emitted from Neela, “Snow is a wonder! I am always surprised how it can change the world in such a short period of time.”

"I know, it's fascinating that this falls from the sky. Now be careful I almost lost you and I had my back turned for about five seconds. Maybe you should get out of there." She giggled and nosed some of the snow away from him.

He looked up into the cloud filled sky; snowflakes fell silently to the earth adding to the already white pile growing around him, he laughed again and turned his attention back to Neela, and wiggled in the snow bank, “I think I am stuck…”

"Oh no, you better not be! How am I supposed to get you out of there?" She started digging at the snow with her hooves, hoping to unbury him somehow. "Seriously, Zachary we were out here for like five minutes and you're already stuck. What am I going to do with you?" She circled around him and started digging in other places, hoping that would start to loosen him up more so he could get out.

Zachary started to wiggle some more, which loosed the snow around his body, “Unbury me? But really, I do not know how this happens… I guess I think I am a snow magnet… Zachary the Snow Stallion happened after all.” He looked down at the snow building up around him, how did he get himself into this mess?

"Come on, Zach. You gotta get outta here." She kept on digging, actually starting to get worried he'd be stuck forever and end up getting buried. "Come on, you can't leave me already. Get outta the snow!" She finally shoved her head into the snow, hoping to get under his stomach and help lever him out.

“Don’t worry, I will be out soon,” as she dug him out he started to wiggle and the snow fell away making it easier for him to get a foot hold to remove himself from the pile, “Almost there, just one more push and I think I will be out, and I won’t leave you like this.” With Neela’s help he was finally able to break away from the snow, he stood on solid frozen grown, his breathing labored, “Thank you Neela, I am not sure what I would have done without you.”

Neela pulled her head back, completely covered in snow as she tried to shake it all off. "Don't scare me like that." She stepped clear of the snow death trap. "I think we should steer clear of this area. And now I can't feel my nose." She wiggled it, trying to get some feeling back in it.

He looked down at his hooves; they were covered with snow clumps, “Sorry that I scared you, I scared myself…that snow bank was starting to build up. Here, let’s get back into the cave, sorry to have ruined the snow time fun.” He closed his eyes and imagined the fire again, this time it only seemed to help a little bit; he was too covered in snow for it to have an effect.

"You didn't ruin it, just put a small snag in it. Maybe that's a good idea. Warm back up and then see if we can get some distance on our search. I don't think we'll find either of our dad's if we just stay here. Now don't get stuck this time." She led the way on the trek back to the cave, and once inside she already felt better. "I wonder what we'll do if we have to stop for the night with no cave to sleep in.."

He nodded and made his way back to the cave, “Perhaps when we are warmer we can continue the fun and our search for our fathers.” He looked back at her and gave her a wry smile, “I will try not to.” He looked around the snow covered world and contemplated her question, “We can keep an eye for a cave or a large tree that will keep the snow off of us.”

"But still, there's not always gonna be a cave or even a tree around. Even a tree won't keep us warm. I'm starting to think we picked the wrong season to start looking for our dads," she laughed. Neela quickly scurried back inside the cave and hunkered down in her little spot to warm up.

Zachary entered the cave and took in a deep breath of the warmer air, “It will be hard to find something as good as this cave, but I am sure we can manage if both of us keep our eyes on the lookout I am sure we could find something.” He was trying to be optimistic and not remember that he almost become a frozen stallion in the snow. That stuff was dangerous and fun at the same time.

"Not to be the complete downer here but.. caves are kinda rare, Zach. We got lucky. We should probably enjoy it while we can because I forsee us being very cold for the next while. Do you have any idea where your dad might be?" The thought of being out in the open cold for who knows how long was not appealing in the slightest. Even with good company. It did not sound fun at all.

He sighed, “Yes I know they are, but I was trying to think positive, positive thinking can cause amazing things to happen.” Zach looked around the cave, it really was a lucky occurrence that they found this place when they did, he looked back at Neela as he considered her question, “He is probably near a place that has a ton of mares, from what I have heard about him, but besides that, I do not have the slightest idea… what about you, do you have some idea of where your father is located?”

"No I don't." She sighed too. "We could.. This sounds kind of ridiculous but we could stay here until things thaw out? Or warm up a little. I REALLY don't wanna go wander around in that, especially with a snow magnet like you. I'll turn around you'll have disappeared on me."

Zach looked outside of the cave to the snow covered landscape, “It does not sound ridiculous, it would be more preferable, since as you said I am a snow magnet. If it continues longer we may need to figure out a new plan, but since we are staying here awhile longer, how about we explore this cave?”

She kind of looked around a little and then back at him. "It's a cave.. I'm pretty sure this is it, silly. Huge underground tunnels are like.. unheard of. Or some sort of myth. I've never heard of anyone actually seeing one."

“Well we don’t really know if it is a myth or not if we don’t take a chance and go on an adventure and look. Perhaps we will be the ones that break the myth?” Zach had a feeling that this was not all to the cave, there had to be more, something truly amazing hid amongst the rocky walls and he could not wait to find out what it was with his new friend Neela.

Neela looked at him as he spoke. She really didn't want to bring down his spirit by continuing to claim she didn't believe there was anything more to the cave. And as cold as she was.. the look on his face, eager to go explore got to her. "Sure, I bet you're right. Let's go see what this cave has to hide, but you gotta lead. I'm not the bravest one out of this duo here." She got up from her spot and made her way back over to his side.

He felt that his emotions may have shown on his countenance and that influenced Neela’s decision to say yes and go on the search with him. “Let’s start in the area that we slept last night, since it is a tad lighter in here, perhaps we will see something that we missed last night?” Even if he was wrong about there being more tunnels leading to caverns in the cave, at least he was able to say he tried and had fun doing it.

"Lead the way, since I don't really know which way to go." She blew her bangs out of her eyes and smiled at him. "I'm almost hoping we don't find anything cool in here, or else we might never leave," she laughed.

Zachary started to head toward the back of the cave where the two of them spent the night, he laughed at her comment, “Or we could just make it our secret hideout and always return here when we want, it will just be our little secret.”

She laughed. "Yes our own secret fort. Almost sounds like we're kids again sneaking away from mom and dad. Except that doesn't really sound like me, I was always pretty good about sticking around mom and dad. Probably why I didn't make many friends."

Zach smiled at Neela, “Well it is never too late to have a secret fort. And the friends that you did meet, where the ones that have stayed with you and influenced your life in some way; when I was little my mother would want my siblings and I to explore and experience the world, but even with that, I did not meet meaningful friends.” It appeared that he could not make longtime friends until he was an adult, he wondered why. Zach squinted his blue eyes, in the shadows of the cave he noticed a bend that had been invisible last night, “Neela look, there is a passage!” He looked around the bend, and a short passage way ended and the sound of heavy breathing. “Neela,” Zachary whispered, “we are not alone…” the big flurry blob growled and then stood. A huge bear awoke, glaring at the two soquili, an ear shattering roar erupted from the maw of the bear, and it began to charge. “Neela, RUN!” He nudged her to go first to run down the passage and out of the cave, he followed close behind, always keeping an eye on the charging bear.

Neela froze in her tracks and whispered. "I don't think exploring was such a good idea anymore." As soon as that large furry thing got up and made its move, she was gone. She wouldn't leave him behind but she made sure she could hear him keeping up as she ran stumbling through the tunnels. If it came to it, she wouldn't be a coward and leave her friend to face a bear alone. And no bear would want to deal with her extremely pissed off. Light came into the darkness and she bolted for the exit, barreling into a wall of snow. It took everything she had to leap, almost deer-like, through the snow to get safely away from the cave. Once hidden behind a tree, chest heaving, she peered around to find Zach. "Zach? Zachary!"

The bear was close on Zachary’s heels, he could sense the hot breath of the animal behind him, the colorful stallion felt his heart pounding in his chest, at least Neela was safely away from the bear. One last time Zachary took a look behind him, the bear was far enough away but did not appear to be getting tired; with one giant leap, he left the snow free area of the cave and entered the winter wonderland. At the edge of the cave, the bear stopped, took one look at the snow covered land and gave another ear defining roar before returning to his winter slumber. “Neela? Neela, where are you?” Zach squinted through the snow, trying to catch sight of his friend.

Don't panic. No need to panic yet. She moved out from the tree and started looking around, cursing that he was mostly white. But he wasn't all white, and she could just make out his colorful spots. "Zach!" She ran.. or tried to run to him. "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"

She was alright; Zachery released the breath he did not know that he was holding, his heart finally starting to return to its normal beat, “Neela! I am fine, although I do not wish to do that again, that was too close for comfort. Are you alright?” He looks her over for injuries, but it was hard to see anything clearly in the white fluffy flakes of snow.

"Yes I'm fine, you were the one back in front of that thing." She wrinkled her nose and turned back to the cave. "It's rude to do that to others you big grouch! Learn to wake up on the right side of the rock!" And with a snort she felt a little bit better. "Come on, we gotta start moving before this gets worse, and stay close or I will start dragging you by your braid." She nosed him as much to make sure he was okay along with reassuring herself that he was still there. "Come on, snow boy."

“Perhaps he was just not a morning person?” He tried to make light of the situation they had just faced, not many could awaken a hibernating bear and come out of the encounter unscathed. Zach followed behind her obediently, “You may end up doing that, but I will keep up, I promise!” He smiled at her nickname for him, too bad it was all too true, he attracted snow like he was the north pole.

"Well.. so much for a relaxing morning. Bet you didn't expect this kind of adventure, huh?" She kept pace so he could walk beside her. Just being close their body heats radiated out, keeping each other warmer than if they went single file. "What are we gonna do now?"

He gave a small laugh, “This is not what I had in mind, but I guess an adventure is an adventure.” He enjoyed the feeling of warmth he was receiving from her body walking next to his, a little bit of sunshine in the snow covered landscape. “Well we can always do what we had first set out to do? Find our fathers.”

"That is true. To be honest I'm not really keeping my eyes peeled for my dad, I'm more concerned I don't fall into a snow pot hole." Guess we just find a new place to crash for tonight. And being that it's morning I'm saying that because I will bet it's going to take all day to find a new place to crash for a while."

“That is why we stop walking, then take a look, and then continue walking, so you can both keep a safe gaze upon the ground and see the beauty surrounding you,” Zach usually did this when he was on one of his walks, so he would avoid stepping upon any small creature who scurried across the ground. The snow was getting higher and made it harder to walk in, both of them were going at such a slow pace, before they even got far from the cave, it would be night, “I am sure we can find a tree that has long branches that will keep most of the snow off of us.”

Neela laughed at his almost smart a** answer, even though he probably didn't mean it that way. "Well if we're constantly stopping, we won't make good ground before dark. So for today we'll forget about our dads for a little bit to focus on survival. Keep your eyes peeled for any dense forests or large trees." Neela wasn't lazy by any means, but she wasn't exactly the athletic type either and all this hiking through the snow was already taking its toll on her small limbs. Unlike some divas she has come across though, she doesn't complain.

Zachary raised one eye brow as Neela laughed, was it something he said? “Yes ma’am,” he nodded and cast his gaze around the snowy landscape, there had to be shelter some place out in this winter wonderland. The rainbow spotted stallion enjoyed nature and the changing of the seasons, but the cold was starting to seep into his bones; he shook off the feeling, it was not the time to show weakness to the cold, if they wanted to find a place to rest for the night.

"I wanted to thank you... for back in the cave. You made me go first, when you could have just started running. It was very brave and gentleman of you. So... thank you. And I'm glad you're okay. I don't know what I would have done if you'd gotten hurt…"

“I could not have lived with myself if I ran a head of you and left you to fend for yourself with that bear,” he smiled at Neela, “It is what friends do.” He did not think about what would have happened if he got mauled by the bear, but the thought no longer matters for the bear went back to his slumber and the two soquili were walking far from its lair, “Well I am glad that we do not have to worry about that,” he smiled brightly at his friend.

"Yeah, guess I picked a good friend." She bumped her shoulder against him with a smile. She'd never forget what he did, no matter how lightly he played it off. "What are we gonna eat anyway? Dig under the snow for grass I guess. Y'know I may have been born around this time, and enjoy playing in the snow for a little while. But I really don't think I'm a huge fan of this winter stuff." She kept on trudging through the snow, small flakes catch in her mane. The bright white a huge contrast against her dark hair.

He returned her bump, “And I did the same in you, I am glad you stopped yesterday.” His blue eyes looked around the whiteness, food would be scarce. “Yes, that would most likely be our best bet of finding food.” Zachary gave a small laugh, “That is completely understandable, after this, I think I will only want to take snow in small increments.” He looked over at Neela, who was covered in the white flakes, “Seems like the snow has found another to transform into a snowmare.”

"I'm glad too." She chuckled at him. "Well even if the snow tries to take me over, I bet I'll still be able to be found a lot easier than it is to find you in the snow. I think there's a small cluster of trees not too far ahead. Might be an okay place for the night."

He laughed, “This is true, snow just likes me for some odd reason.” The stallion looked in the direction that Neela pointed out, he could barely make out the shape of trees in the blinding white landscape, “I believe you are right, Neela. They will be perfect at supplying cover for this night and hopefully we can find something to eat there as well.”

It was silent for a while as they continued on towards their new destination, only the sound of crunching hooves in the snow. "I suppose I've run out of things to talk about. Think the cold is starting to freeze my mind too."

He nodded his head in agreement, “I think if we wait any longer we will have icicles coming off of us.” His blue eyes locked on to the trees, they were so close yet so far way in this freezing treacherous earth; he was running out of things to talk about as well, he was just too tired to formulate anything intellectually coherent.

"Come on let's just get this over with. Don't get stuck in the snow again." She picked up her pace and it took a minute to get her icy limbs warmed up enough to get up to a decent canter. The cold wind whipped at her face, and stung her eyes but it was better to get to the shelter fast than drag it out. She couldn't tell if Zach was behind her or not, she just hoped he showed up in the trees when she did or else she would have to go back and track him down.

He definitely did not want to repeat what happened this morning with the snow, so he made his way quickly through the puffs following Neela, staying on her heels so he would not lose her in the flurries. The cold wind sent a shiver down his spine; soon they would be under a tree which would protect them from some of the nasty winter elements. In the distance the trees started to get bigger as the two soquili quickly made their way to the tree’s protective embrace.

Once inside the little bit of protection the trees offered, she slowed down and turned to make sure Zach was right behind her. "Well here we are." She was shaking, her legs and it felt like her insides were shaking trying to warm up her body. "I'm not really up for finding food right now, if you're hungry feel free to go look. I'll just be here." She slowly lowered herself to the icy ground.

He shook the piles of snow from his body; the tree’s branches had created a nice over hang that protected the earth below it from too much of a snowy coating. Already he could feel body warming as he removed himself from the constant fall of snow; his stomach was surprisingly not growling, so he decided to follow Neela’s example and rest for the time being, Zachary took in a deep refreshing breath, letting it calm his nerves and pictured a fire in his mind, letting it warm the crevices in his body.

Neela rested her head against one of his legs, trying to practice one of Zach's tricks and picturing somewhere warm. Except her imagination probably wasn't as good as his. "I.. I don't know if I can stay out here for very long."

Zachary looked down at his friend, she was freezing and there was no place else to go that would keep them from the elements. An idea popped into his head, it was the only way to keep Neela and himself warm in the frosty weather; he kneeled down and laid next to his cold friend, “Body heat will be the only way to survive the night, I hope you don’t mind.” He stared at his friend, asking her permission before he got closer to her icy body.

She pressed her head into his shoulder, first warming up her face. "Trust me, I don't mind. Here." She took off her little neck scarf and placed the small cloth over his back. "I know that really doesn't do anything but.. it's the thought that counts?" With a little shifting, she was all curled up against him and already starting to feel better.

He smiled at his friend and nuzzled closer to her, giving her what little body heat he had. “Thank you, it is the thought that does count and hopefully we shall be warm here beneath the tree.” If this situation occurred on any other night, Zachary would have worried about being too forward, but both of them were in a life or death situation.

"I hope so too. I'd hate to wake up and be a popsicle... but then I guess we wouldn't wake up. Which is depressing." She nuzzled her head under his braid, and tried to get comfortable. "Thanks again. For everything."

Zachary did not even want to think about Neela becoming a Popsicle; he would not know what he would do with himself if his new friend became an icy being. “It is depressing; let’s not think about shall we?” He leaned his head toward her, and smiled, although he knew that she could not see the gesture, “You’re welcome my dear friend, for that is what friends are for.”
