Luthe:
Luthe moved across the darkened savanna, the moon a full disk in the sky as he walked on. It had seemed like forever since he left his mountain home to wander the world looking for his mother, his siblings. He knew where he came from, the mark on his paw from her, his goddess mother. Of course, he didn't blame her. His nyanya said she had been young when the goddess brought the cubs to the older lioness. Since his nyanya had passed away, he had left home and started wandering. He was used to being on his own by now, but he missed his home. The mountain was so much cooler, secluded.

He didn't know what it would do when he found his siblings, if he wanted them to come back with him or if he just wanted to know where they were, if they were still alive even. And to find his mother... just to know her.
A grove of three or four trees looked like a nice place to stop for a break.

Philippos:
Philippos had met up with the older lion in his own journeys. Born to an astringed pair formally inhabiting the pridelands, he had been taught at an early age that the spirits of the dead watched over from above. An inquisitive cub by nature, he spent much of his youth wondering just why that was, how that was, and just who watched him from the endless depths of the night sky. As he grew and became less ignorant of the world, he became very aware of the delicate balance of good and evil. A knowlege that was ingrained further when he was the sole survivor of an attack on his family's den by a band of rogues. There were many nights where the lion had wandered, wondering all the while how such wicked lions could exist, if they would be admitted into the sparkling heavens above, and if his family watched over him as they told him they would...

Soon he became aware of the existance of gods. Good gods, wicked gods, and gods that held dominion over the natural elements. Wind, water, fire... then there were gods of peace and war, life and death, courage and fear- a delicate balance. Through his travels he had met his current companion. The son of a goddess and a well-learned individual.

It was Philippos who proposed that perhaps the admission into the shining heavens above was earned, rather than given. It was a thought that had entertained the two as they traveled for quite a few seasons. They debated, pondered, and made soft musings into the relitive silence of the night.

As Luthe slowed his pace, Phil lifted his head and rolled his ears forward. "...hm. So that's home tonight?"

Luthe:
The sudden break in the silence reminded the demigod that he wasn't alone. Another lion, Phil, walked with him, the only friend he still had.
"I believe so. Seems like the best place we've seen in a while, don't you agree?" he asked, his tone mild and musing as he gave the other male a quirked glance. It was especially good in case the clouds that were starting to fill the sky were any indicator of the change in weather.

"Unless you have a better idea?"

Philippos:
"Oh no. It seems our paws were guided to the right place considering the weather." He lifted his eyes skyward, a disappointed wince crossing his features as the dark clouds covered the stars and the moon. The land was impossibly dark without them.

"Only further proof of the silent war between the forces of good and bad. When the rain comes- shelter is provided." He chuckled quietly. "That or we're just lucky."

Luthe:
Luthe chuckled at Phil's devotion to the ideas of good and evil at play in everything in the world. He, of course, didn't see things in quite the same way. Most things in life were just that, a part of life.
"Good fortune is a distinct probability. Of course, the number of times I've been caught in the rain, it's about time I'd have some shelter," he replied with an amused chuckle.

"Rain is a life-giver, keep that in mind, Phil. Everything needs water, even in the smallest amounts. I don't think even a malicious god would be amused by two random mortals being rained on. Well, maybe, but those types of gods, from what I've heard, tend to just enjoy chaos and mischief." His nyanya had been something of an expert on the gods she knew. It had probably been why his mother had left her cubs with the lioness. And he, in turn knew all that she had known, and then some.

Philippos:
"I never said water was bad." He pointed out with a sidelong glance and a playful smirk. "I just said it's unfortunate that we're caught up in it. Still, we should be grateful for both the water and the shelter from it."

The tree wasn't perfect by any means, and they would still get wet resting under its thin branches but it was better than nothing. Exhausted, the brown lion dropped to a sit with his back against the tree's trunk. The sky rumbled above, drawing his eyes skyward. "Imagine holding such power as to command the sky itself... it's humbling."

Luthe:
Luthe shook his head as he joined the younger lion in the shelter and settled himself down. Phil was so... misguided in a way. Both were scholars of the gods in the heavens, but it seemed that he was the only one of them that really understood it all, or came closer to the truth at least. Gods were flawed, mortal in their own ways. It had been a powerful lesson to learn and yet he had no choice. He needed to ask why they were left with Nyanya, why their mother didn't want them, he needed to know. Their nyanya was an honest lioness, almost brutal in that. She understood that nothing short of the truth was owed to him and so he learned that even gods made mistakes, jumped before they were ready to fly, to take on the responsibilities of their actions.
His mother had left them because she had been young, and scared.

To know that gods feared just as mortals did was even more humbling.

"True, but you did mention that silent war of yours," Luthe replied with a small wave of his paw, huddling in his cloak when the clouds covered the moon and the first drops began to fall.
"I've never asked a god, but I'll keep that question in mind." A small smirk found its way onto his maw, matching the one Phil had given him earlier. He tilted his head, looking away, out into the vastness of the world and yet seeing nothing. He never really asked before, and he had the distinct feeling that he was running out of time with his friend.

"Do you think gods have regrets?"

Philippos:
He snorted and rolled his eyes. "I think you misunderstand. The elements must be at war. For the rain there must be a sunny day. I doubt the two get along. For the sun, there must be a moon. For the good there must be a bad. All around us there's a silent war that we so easily ignore for our own lives, our own troubles. Perhaps we're unknowingly a part of it." It was an interesting thought. What if gods depended on their followers to give them strength? To oppose the followers of their rivals? To be effected by their powers? It was all so complicated but in a way, intriguing on multiple levels. Perhaps they were to be slowed in their progress that night and it was the rain's job to see to it. Perhaps it was to allow a threat to catch up to them or to keep them from walking into one? They might never know.

He glanced over. That was an interesting question.

"Perhaps they do, though I would like to think that the gods know what they are doing."

Luthe:
It was such a black and white view of the world, Luthe had to wonder if Phil ever saw anything in a shade of gray. But then, that was probably what he liked about the other lion. He spent so much time wrapped up in his own thoughts, it was nice to hear the ideas of another, even if he didn't quite agree.
It made him wonder what the gods really were like, if there was one for rain, did it not interact well with that of the sun?

But then, that conflicted with what his understanding of the gods was. He, though open to enlightenment, believed that there was one great god who long ago formed everything, as Nyanya had once told him. And in the forming, this great one reached out and allowed its powers to give life to the beliefs of the world, creating the gods from which Luthe was descended. From what he'd been taught, they weren't absolute, what they could do was certainly not on the scale of, say, controlling all the rain in the land. They were supposed to be helpers to the great one.
He was rather eager to find out if he was right.

"We probably are. I was taught that our belief in the gods helps to strengthen them. Though, really that could be said about anyone, now couldn't it?" He had a feeling if he had a number of creatures believe in him and his abilities, he'd be more confidant about what he could do, too.

He smiled.
"Do you think anyone really knows what they're doing all of the time? I certainly don't, and I have more insight than most."
