Lights were going up everywhere. People seemed to be in joy moods. The weather was getting colder. All signs were pointing to one thing: Christmas!
Zedena sat on the edge of a stone wall separating a private garden from the busy streets outside of Makai Academy. Her eyes darted back and forth at happy witches and people carrying packages home from a day of shopping. Everyone was so cheery. Frankly the entire event made her head spin. These people were running around, fighting like demons in stores for the best items, then walking outside like the best of friends? Was this really the magic of Christmas?
“I don’t think I really want to understand this…” She whispered reaching up to brush a few loose hairs from her face as the wind blew.
Pushing off the wall, Zedena landed with a light thud on her heeled shoes. Amazing how graceful she had learned to be once she was gifted with them. Yet that was only a second thought to her now. Right now, she was going to a café for something warm. All this wind and ‘cheer’ left her feeling cold.
“Watch out!”
Zedena’s head turned just in time to see a young boy on a bike coming directly towards her and then…
Had the sky always been that grey?
“Miss? Miss? Hey!” The young voice was calling again but the second Zedena blinked, he seemed to back off. “Hey! Watch it next time!” Well that was youth for you as he sped off in a fit leaving the witch sitting on the ground, people watching.
It was then she noticed something, something that hadn’t been there before. A strange box sitting on the ground next to where the young boy had been standing. ‘Oh great. Now I’m stuck with this too?” She sighed reaching out to see what was all the fuss about packages this time of year.

Winter was here. That much was pretty evident enough given the shorter daylight hours, the bone-chilling winds as well as the occasional snowfall in the town of Makai. Still, that didn't seem to dampen the Christmas spirit of many if the incessant ringing of the registers in the stores and the number of merry-makers on the streets were anything to go by as the very day itself drew near. Lea enjoyed the cold greatly. While many would be content to simply stay indoors beside a fireplace with a hot drink at hand, he found the drop in temperature invigorating to his senses on the contrary. Something to do with 'being in his element' perhaps since the young mononoke would conversely be found napping most of his days away at the shadiest spot he could find during the summer season.
Lea was en route back to the academy, having just spent yet another long day at his part-time job at Cedar's shop. It was probably a good thing that he had decided to postpone his trip to Clarus Arbor subsequently. The sheer number of customers, who had been dropping by to stock up on produce for the festive season, was barely manageable with the both of them and he wouldn't dare imagine how the young olive-eyed witch could cope had he not been around. ... not that he would allow it to happen in the first place anyway.
A screeching sound of the brakes of someone's bicycle being applied hurriedly snapped him out of his reverie and drew his attention to the green-haired witch who had rather fortunately and narrowly missed being knocked down by a delivery boy. It did seem pretty rude of him to not at the very least offer to help her up before going on his way. Hardly a way to treat a lady regardless of whether the earlier near accident had been his or her fault. Not that that mattered at this point any way. Well, he supposed he could empathize some with the young male since it was a period of time when all in the service sector suffered from many a frayed nerves as they rushed about filling their customers' orders.
"Are you um... alright?" Before he knew it, Lea was crouching down right next to Zedena, emeralds looking her over as grey-white furry ears twitched nervously, a small yet kindly smile on his face.

Her hands had just wrapped around the package when a shadow moved over her form. Not daring to turn her head, Zedena’s eyes looked sideways just in time to see a twitch on the top of the being’s head. Whatever was on its head moved. This day just got strange.
Finally deciding to look over at him (and realizing it was a him) Zedena gave a rather simple nod. What could she really say? That she wasn’t fine and that she needed help. What help would she need for hurt pride?
“Yes. I’m okay. Just got the breath knocked out of me and a bit of surprise.” Looking around, she shot a few death glances at people whispering as they walked by. “Seems very few people have manners in these parts even for ALL the Christmas cheer.”
The tone was a bit louder, meaning she wanted people to hear her before quickly looking back at the boy next to her. He was a student, that she was sure of. But as she looked, she noticed a few other pieces.
“I’m sorry but did those move?” She glanced up at his ears.

Zedena didn't look like she was injured anywhere or anything. Maybe not totally unscathed since some bumps and superficial cuts were unavoidable in the course of such an incident but if she had them, she certainly wasn't making a big fuss out of it as far as Lea could see. "I suppose he could have done more or handled the situation in a better manner, but I guess people do tend to react not so rationally during times of stress." He offered his opinion sheepishly, not wanting to give off the impression that he was siding with the delivery boy as his ears began to twitch again at the piercing glares that she was directing at the passing people around them.
Just as he was beginning to wonder if he should offer to help her up next or something, he heard her question and then spotted the gaze that was directed upwards towards his ears. He willed them to stop moving, a very light pink colouring his cheeks as he hurriedly explained, having gotten used to people being curious about his mononoke features by now. "Y-Yes. They're real ears you see. Not something like a hair accessory like those reindeer antlers or elf ears that one can find in the shops." He was starting to ramble and he really hoped that she wouldn't find it grating on her nerves and decide to direct one of her earlier glares his way.

Zedena couldn’t help her body’s next movement. She was six again and going around looking at all the stuffed animals in the toy store. In her mind she could already picture the feline toy she had wanted with ears very much like this. Now her fingers seemed to follow habit.
Shifting to her knees so that she was kneeling next to the stranger, Zedena’s eyes left his face and focused solely on their target. Two quick hand movements and she had the fluff in reach.
Yank Yank!
“Oh!” She called out leaning back. “They are real!” She was shocked. Honestly Zedena thought they were still costume pieces and now…
Glancing down at her face, she turned bright red. “Oh! I’m sorry. I didn’t even ask and…” Her hand slipped backwards onto the box and she turned her head. “And here!” Scooping it up with one hand, she thrust the dropped package at the boy. “I’m sorry. Whatever is in it is yours!”
Zedena was shaking in even more personal embarrassment as she stood faster than lightening and nearly ran, not even trying to learn if she had handed him something good or bad.
