[I feel so special! I posted the first topic in the Barn. Haha]

Anyway, I'm experiencing a slight problem with the horse I'm leasing. He's an appedix and eight-years-old. He's 16.3 hands and is very slim. I'm having difficulty trying to keep weight on him. He's pasture board, and he's unfortunately the lowest man on the pecking order. So, when it comes to feeding time, the other horses push him away from his feed.

This Christmas break I'm trying to go everyday to give him lunch, which is the same amount of feed for breakfast and dinner, by walking him out of the pasture, feeding him a bucket of grain, and putting him back in the pasture when he's done.

I can't do this forever, so I'm open for suggests as to what I should add to his feed and such. He eats Purina Mills Equine Adult, and I can't really change the grain the barn gets. So is there anything I can give him that will help keep the weight on him?

One thing that you can do, is get a vegetable oil, or molasses and mix that in with his feed. Also, the barn shouldn't be feeding in the pastures, they should be pulling the horses in and feeding them in the stalls if they have them. If this is an option, insist that your horse be feed inside. Also, you can change the feed, you will just personally have to buy it. (I do this with my gelding that I board) A feed with high fat and high protein content is something that you will want to look for. I would suggest PowerGlo.

Yea, if you are paying for the boarding services, order them to feed him in his own stall. All of the barns and ranches that I have worked at feed all of the horses inside the stalls so herd mentality does not take over. Definitely discuss this with them, or change the boarder. cat_3nodding

I would add maybe a spoon full or two of veggie oil to his feed, or give some calf manna top dressed on it. Maybe offer a bit more feed, but I wouldn't add and take away feedings that he isn't used to. It can really harm them more than it could help. Keep feed changes gradual.
