User Image Magic was not yet End of an Era's strong point. Although the little unicorn knew exactly what her horn was for, she wasn't quite sure how to use it. And since she didn't exactly have a long list of unicorn acquaintances, she had to figure this telekinesis thing out for herself. So it was on a very cool day that she was practicing lifting things in the park. Not big things, mind you- rocks, sticks, twigs, the last windfallen leaves of autumn, duck feathers; just little things. She was practicing near a pond of ducks, pretending she was Cathy on the moors splashed with the magicians of fairy tales. She managed to make a little progress, lifting two rocks and an old boot a few inches off the ground all at the same time... until...

SPLASH! The rocks, the boot, and the little unicorn, thrown off-balance by her magic's failing, all went straight into the duck pond. Ender flailed about madly, emerging from the water like a creature from some black lagoon. A lilypad was skewered on her horn and her hooves and flanks were covered in mud. The water was chilly and the muck weighed down her fur. Eyes blazing, she glanced around, looking to see where she could hide, clean herself off, and then wait a bit before slinking home.

But a pair of eyes had already spotted her.

It was rather fascinating for the earth pony, not having any magic of her own nor the gift of flight, to watch such actions and there was a distinct air of jealousy. Especially for unicorns, who seemed so refined and special.

Her orange eyes were wide, mouth agape in awe as two rocks and a boot hovered off the ground with what seemed like practiced ease... until the spectral unicorn fumbled.

SPLOOSH!

At first, Mandrake Blossom let out a horrified gasp, but as End of an Era rose from the mucky lake, all that followed was shrill laughter. She could barely stand, her legs feeling wobbly with the force of the humor that struck her so suddenly, tears forming in her eyes. With a dull thump, Mandrake was on her side, small legs kicking as she giggled uncontrollably.

"L-LOOK AT YOUR FACE, HAHAHAHA!" Her volume couldn't be contained, voice rising to a horrid shriek as she attempted to speak through her laughter.

A mixture of fury and depression hit Ender like a shockwave. She'd planned on just wiping herself off... but the sound of laughter cut her like a knife. She didn't socialize much with other ponies, and her best friend, Taquita, was just as serious as she was. Laughter came in light waves during humorous bits of stories, or during a Tim Burton movie. It wasn't something you directed at other ponies- EVER! She wanted to draw upon the strengths of Mina Harker and Catherine Moreland and Catherine Earnshaw and tell the other filly just how she felt about ponies who would be so cruel. Yes, she knew this kind of behavior from books... and she knew what happened to the characters who acted as such.

However, instead of something pithy and witty, the little unicorn found herself almost crying. This was absurd! Crying was reserved for tragic love stories, not for being laughed at. Maybe it was because she was cold and covered in mud? Or... this weird plant thing on her horn. That might be it. But this indigity could not stand! Marching over to the filly on the ground, she placed a muddy hoof on her chest. "A-a-and what do you find so funny?" she shouted with tears in her eyes at the little earth pony. The quiet little ghost girl could holler when she needed to.

Rolling. She was literally rolling with the force of her laughter. The small filly sidled back and forth on the ground, legs kicking in the air. She, too, was nearly crying, but for a completely different reason than the poor unicorn. Mandrake heard the motion of the water as End of an Era exited the pond, her shrill laughter not quieting or ceasing except for a few seconds at a time where she would have to gasp for breath and it would start again. Her wailing laughter no doubt carried far, but a firm shriek from the unicorn and a mud covered jab at her chest finally turned her laughter into muted snickers as she tried to keep her mouth shut and stare at the filthy filly towering above her.

"A-a-and what do you find so funny?"

If it hadn't been for the clearly angry look and lack of any laughter in her voice, Mandrake might have taken her comment sarcastically. Instead, her brows upturned to worry but her smirk couldn't be quelled just yet and occasionally a snerk wormed its way out of her throat as she looked the poor girl over. "I-... snrk ...erm... Y-you!" she finally managed to blurt it out, bringing her hooves up to cover her face before she started on another torrent of laughter.

She didn't care about the mud on her fur now, and if she were in Ender's position she wouldn't have cared about the mud all over her. Maybe the lily pad was not as welcomed. Rolling quickly to her feet, Mandrake grabbed the edge of the plant with her teeth and tossed it like a frizbee behind her. "Haha, ohhh..." she sighed, finally coming down from the fit, "You're not hurt, right?" Orange eyes roamed over Ender's form but all she could see was mud and some of the palest fur she had ever been privy too. It looked awesome. "I didn't think so when you popped back up! ...And... and the lily pad... snrk!!" If she wasn't careful she would fall right back into another laughing fit.

Ender, to her own surprise, didn't lash out at the other filly when the lily pad was lifted from her horn. N-no, I'm not hurt..." she sniffed, sneezing. Maybe a little cold, but not hurt. Not physically. "I'm not funny... I can't be funny! Phonies like me can't be funny!" she squeaked, attempting to shout but failing this time. A big part of her was curious. Funny was for comedians and for satirists; it wasn't for little girls who fell in the muck! This was tragedy. Were she in a story, she would be sent right to bed for fear of consumption or pneumonia. But the other filly was almost hysterical; this either meant that she was a villain who liked to see the innocent be hurt, or she was genuinely laughing at something that was genuinely funny. And the only other thing out here... was her.

So... she was funny?

That didn't make sense. But even she knew she wasn't an authority on funny. Ender dropped to her rump in the grass and began to use the soft green blades to wipe herself clean. Then, never taking her eyes off the strange filly, she walked carefully back over to the pond. "These lily pads don't seem to funny to me. Is it the lily pad on my head that makes it funny?"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 27, 2012 10:41 am

"Well that's good, at least!"

The ghostly filly certainly didn't look hurt and that was the whole reason Mandrake allowed herself to laugh in the first place. She looked so utterly ridiculous, but if the poor phony had been hurt she would've been moping and guilting herself all through the rest of the day. This, however, wasn't quite the reaction the navy blue filly had been expecting and she held her breath momentarily to keep from falling into a fit of giggling confusion.

"I'm not funny... I can't be funny! Phonies like me can't be funny!"

...Seriously?

And then she dropped on her rump on the grass, trying to get the mud off herself. Mandrake barely even remembered having mud in her own fur, not caring to wipe it off in the mean time. Flicking an ear curiously, she clopped over to the edge of the pond with Ender, keeping just a few paces back.

"Yeah." she answered simply at first, "It made you look really goofy! And then when your face was all mushy-muddy." Mandrake plopped down on her own rump, raising her front hooves to her cheeks and smushing them all around, making funny faces.

It was weird trying to explain the mechanics of humor to somepony when she had never had to do that before. Considering her squeak before, was it possible this filly was... mad at her for having laughed?

"Hmmm... so goofy is a good thing..." Ender mused as she tried to wrap her head around the concept of indignity being anything but tragic. When she thought about it, it really was an absurd situation. She wasn't going to catch pneumonia or consumption and die from falling into a pond; lily pads weren't really acceptable hats, even in polite society; and well, the mud probably did make her look pretty strange. If you took stock in the thought of humor in the absurd... well, maybe she was funny.

Experimentally, she smooshed up her own face, mimicking the other filly. She wasn't sure what she looked like, but she did feel silly... a small giggle escaped her lips as she got an idea. Abruptly, she jumped up, then trotted back to the pond. Yes, there were still plenty of lily pads. Reaching down, she severed one with her teeth, then, making sure it was nice and wet, levitated it behind her back.

"Say! Blue filly whose name I don't know! I think there's something over here you should see. I need to know if it's funny!"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 27, 2012 11:42 pm

Mandrake quirked a brow at the spectral filly before her. How did anyone her age not know that goofy was good? Then again, the way she spoke and carried herself was far from how she'd seen any colt or foal act or speak. She was an interesting sort all right; weird but interesting, for sure.

Her mimicry of Mandrake's silly face illicited a laugh from her and the Sleepy Pickle perked up again, grinning hard. It seemed like she was getting the hang of it!

"Yeah?" she drawled in response to the other filly's request, trotting over with a quick, "You can call me Mandrake, y'know. So whattaya need me to see?" Her orange eyes lit up excitedly, gleaming with expectancy for the oncoming humor. She literally had no idea what Ender had in mind, having been lost in thought while she set up the act. Mandrake wasn't the smartest Pickle in the pile, but she also wasn't the dullest and she kept a wry grin on her face while she tried to read Ender's own expression.

"I'm End of an Era; most phonies call me Ender," the little filly said as she focused on keeping her lillypad hidden. "And I think I'm beginning to get what you mean, but I need to do a little... well, I guess you'd call it an experiment." Now that the other filly was closer, she hovered out the lillypad as quickly as she could and plopped it on the earth phony's head. It made a satisfying squelchy noise as it settled into place in a puff of greyish magic. "You're right! Lilly pad hats are funny!" she said with a giggle, hoping that the other phony wasn't offended. She smiled widely, hoping dearly that the other phony got the joke and didn't take it the wrong way like she probably would have... well, maybe. Maybe not. She was beginning to get the hang of this goofy humor. Because she had to admit- it was pretty funny, what with the hat and the mud. It matched the other phony's mane pretty nicely, even!

Before Mandrake had time to blink, there was suddenly something cold, wet and gooey slapped down against her mane and face, and she felt the sludgey trickle of mud down between her eyes and across her snout. For a brief moment, she looked positively aghast -- horrified, even -- and stared at Ender with a wide eyed gaze, her tiny mouth drooped open in stunned silence.

Slowly, as mud dripped off her nose and the sides of her face, she turned to look at her reflection in the murky pool beside her. She could barely recognize herself with the stupid lilypad hat and blotchy brown face! The unicorn's giggle was met with a continued silence for a few seconds more before Mandrake dug the tips of her hooves into the soft, damp dirt lining the pond and violently shook off the lilypad as well as the mud, spraying dirt gunk every which way. As she did so, a small sound welled up until it increased in volume and became shrill, nearly ear piercing, and as if her throat had been hooked up to an amplifier.

"....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--" it sounded like something between rage and sorrow... at least until Mandrake reared up her front legs and fell backwards hard, kicking her legs in the air once again, "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA YOU-- HAHAHAAHAHAHA YOU GOT ME!"

Lilypad hats were the silliest.

Ender's initial frown mirrored Mandrakes... until the filly started laughing. The silliness was infectious; Ender couldn't help but laugh in relief that the joke had gone over well and just at the sheer funniness of it. She flopped to her side in the mire, not caring about where mud got, and rolled on her back, heaving with laughter. Giggles turned into chortles; chortles turned into shrieks of pure mirth. "Yep! I got you good!"

As their laughter died down, Ender reached out and wiped some mud from the other phony's nose. "Thanks," she said in a much softer tone of voice. "I'm glad you thought it was funny, too. It was really nice of you not to get mad at me... before I met you, I would have thought that everyphony would have gotten mad at a lilypad on their head. But now- now I get the joke!"
PostPosted: Sat Jan 28, 2012 12:43 am

Oh man. Mandrake loved a good, long laugh. It felt good on her lungs, made her throat satisfyingly sore and in general she just felt better no matter what kind of day she had been having. Laughter was great! Of course, laughter couldn't go on forever, and it slowed down to quiet giggles and deep seated grins that refused to leave.

Getting back on her hooves, Mandrake Blossom scrunched up her face as Ender wiped some mud off her snout with a gentle hoof and the filly eagerly chuckled again, grinning wide. The thanks, however, was unexpected and she let her ears twitch curiously as she listened to the unicorn's explanation.

So she had done a good thing today? Just from laughing and taking a joke?

"Awesome," she blurted first, more to herself than in response to Ender, "You're welcome! I'm, uh... glad I could help too! I didn't know being able to take a joke and laugh at yourself was kind, but I'm glad I do now! So thank you too!" Mandrake practically shrieked at the positive feels coursing through her now. Ender was able to find some good ol' humor, Mandrake had a good time of laughs and she was able to be nice enough to someone that it made them happy.

All in all, today was a pretty good day!

"I'm serious!" Ender squeaked, relaxed and happy from the laughter. "I, uh, I don't know if you noticed, but I don't really have... well, sometimes I don't understand a lot of what most phonies consider normal. I'm kind of strange and unusual. It's stuff like this that really helps me out. You might not know it, but I, uh, I guess if you're a nice phony, kindness just comes naturally. It's something I'm learning as I meet more phonies. It's... well, usually it's not this fun!" She attempted to wipe some more of the muck from her coat. It might be a hopeless case by this point in time, but whatever. She could always take a proper bath at home. Life was too short to worry over a muddy hide. "I, uh, I should probably head for home. I'm getting kinda tired; too much magic leads to unicorn burn out. But it was really nice to meet you, Mandrake- who knows, maybe I'll see you around again!"
