for those of you who dont know an isosahedan is a 3-d figure of 20 sides made of triangles
http://nujumkey.deviantart.com/art/final-product-rose-275089491
see the large red part of the rose? that is an isosohedran.
I did this for a geometry project but since it was pretty cool so i plan on making a different figure out of the isohedran's.

You will need;
-some paper (likely multiple sheets)
-scizzers
-glue (prefferably liquid glue)
depending on how you do things...
-a circle (like object)
-other objects for the final product
-construction paper (instead of paper)
-hot glue gun (instead of glue)

Step 1 ; make the triangles you are going to use for your project. Don't actually draw 100 triangles and try to stick them together.

http://www.deviantart.com/print/23916483/?utm_source=deviantART&utm_medium=messagecenter&utm_campaign=print_followup

the picture dim but you can hopefully see how i made the triangle inside circles. You'll see why in the later steps but for now it's recommended to keep the triangles in circles. Also try to make the triangles equalateral , with all the sides and inside angles the same. Also you'll want all the circles to be the same, although they dont matter as much as the triangles because they wont show HOWEVER if all your circles are different sizes then the triangles will be different sizes resulting in an extremely crooked isosahedran. So try to keep all the circles and triangles the same, i recommend keeping a standard i tem to make them from, like a mold (i used a piece of paper).
I made the circles using a computer though so i guess i shoudn't talk but you can also make the circle using a compass or other objects depending on the size of the circle.
The triangles were trickier, it took me a few tries measuring it with a protractor bfore i got all the angles inside the circle at 60 degrees (the angle of all the sides of a triangle to be the same)

Step 2; cutting them out.

okay pretty self explanatory. Cut the circles with the triangles inside them out of the paper. it's preferred to keep all the circles similar.

Step 3; folding the circles.

Once again very simple. At this point i'd highly recommend organizing all your paper scraps and triangles. For the next step i'd request you get some liquid glue ready.
also when you fold them make sure you fold along the lines as shown

step 4; attach them.
This is fairly simple; now that the circles are folded you can put glue (or staple if you can) the folded circular ends together
http://nujumkey.deviantart.com/art/isosohedran-torturial-step-275090043
it will take at least 5 of the folded triangles to make the top and bottom of an isosohedran and about 10 more to fill in the middle section.

i found this diagram pretty helpful when putting it together, keep in m ind the pictures a bit slanted though. also keep in mind that you can attach them in more than one way. remember my rose picture?

paper rose

if you notice, to 'dirt' at the bottem is made from 5 triangles similar to the top of an isosohedra. you can use the isosohedran in more than just a rose, like a snowman of multiple isosohedrans attached like a rainbow (those were some of my classmates ideas, im sorry i didn't take picture!!)

If you manage to pull of making an isosehedran feel free to post as this torturial is now finished biggrin
