Feeling down as usual, Taquita left the bookstore without any new books. It happened from time to time where she just couldn't find anything that she wanted to read. That didn't mean she accepted it though. Was it too much to ask that Phonyland's sole operational book dealer have an extensive collection of works by obscure poets?
Knowing how to solve every problem, she sat down under the tree outside the store, and pulled out her notebook and pen, and began to compose an angry letter:
"To the proprietors of Phonyland Books,
I have noticed a dangerous trend as of late; you have been lax in your duties to keep your shelves freshly stocked with fine works of literature. Instead of using your purchasing dollars for golden classics, you display gaudy end caps of sappy supernatural pre-teen love stories. Even more egregious is your Foals Section that has nothing but patronizing pop up books and demeaning depictions of my age group.
Please rectify this immediately, Taquita"
There. That would get something solved.

Babby Waddle jiggled along the sidewalk in his little own little, porky dance that he calls a walk. His excitement at life oozed everywhere, and anyphony could tell this was one very happy phony. As he wiggled along, he spotted another babby phony, not too unlike himself, but for the giant scowl across this babbin's face. Never one to let another phony be unhappy, he waddled his way over to the phony under the tree. "Um, hi there!" Waddle chirped brightly. Inside he smiled, hoping maybe he could cheer this phony up, and get his Very Second Friend!

The sound of an excited voice made Taquita look up from her angry letter writing. The colt standing before her could best be described like a watermelon. He was pink and green, and had a smile just as wide as a slice of the fruit. He didn't hide his excitement very well.
Taquita regretted looking up immediately.
"Hello," she said while tapping her pen on the grass, "I don't think I've seen you before." Then again, he could have been in Phonyland for a very long time, and Taquita would have never noticed. She didn't really pay attention to much outside of her own little world.

Waddle giggled and the filly's OBVIOUS question. What a silly filly! "Well, duh! I'm NEW to Phonyland. I haven't been out of my blisterpack too long, but I'm making as many friends as I can!!" He jiggled on over next to her and plopped his hindquarters onto an empty patch of grass. "My name is Waddle. What's yours?"

Taquita was mortified that he was sitting that close to her. But he did kind of remind her of her brothers and their never ending optimism. Yet another Phony who just wouldn't understand her dark sadness.
"Well, hello Waddle," Taquita said, laying heavy emphasis on his name, "I'm Taquita. It's a ....pleasure... to meet you." Bah. She could be nice sometimes, but it almost physically hurt her to do it. "You're on a quest to find friends? Well, I'm on a quest to get this bookshop some decent books. Would you mind proofreading my letter before I go back inside to drop it off?"

Waddle grinned at her name. "Taquita? That's really pretty! It's super good to meet you, Taquita!" The colt bounced his head, flopping his mane into his eyes. He scowled at it momentarily, then blew at it ferociously to get it out of the way. It didn't move, so he clopped himself in the face to try to bat it out of the way. Finally he shook his head and his mane fell back into place. Puh. Hate that."Oohh, books hmm?" Waddle leaned over to look at her letter. "I'm not the best reader, but I can try, for you! Are the books in the store not good enough? I thought they had a lot of really interesting books for Phonies!" He was very impressed with his Maybe New Friend, he didn't know many phonies that did a lot of reading. In fact, he didn't know any phonies that read. Only his owner, and a couple other human beings bought books, as far as he was aware. Then again, I'm not really aware of much, am I? Waddle pondered.

She watched him shake his head around, smack himself, and just be way too energy filled overall. He. Just. Never. Stopped. It was annoying, but she had to admit that it was kind of funny...
"Well, they did have lots of interesting books, but I read them all. Now they aren't stocking any new ones that I want to buy!" She closed her eyes and put one of her front legs to her forehead dramatically. "It's a horrible. Terrible. The wost thing to ever happen in Phonyland!" Taquita peeked one eye open to make sure Waddle was still watching her dramatic rant. There was no point in exaggerating one's emotions if there's no one to see it. "Waddle, we have to do something. I just can't endure this suffering!"

He gaped at her as she lamented the "worse thing to ever happen in Phonyland." He clopped a hoof to his muzzle and pondered her predicament. "Hmmmm....." he mused out loud. "Gotta do something? I don't know much about bad things to happen in Phonyland, but I will take your word for it! We have to do something! How about, we could play a game!" He jumped up and dashed a circle around Taquita. "Or, we could think up our own stories!" He plopped down beside her again and leaned his head in close. "I'm sure we can come up with much better stories than ANY book in a dumb old bookstore, huh?" "And maybe after that, we could go to Bonbon's cafe and have a cupcake, or something!" Waddle bounced, and his eyes shone in excitement over the prospect of a cupcake from his Phony friend. "Besides, you already read all the books here...what good would it do for a babby phony to write a letter to a bookstore that only carries books about Phonies anyway?"

None of those something Waddle listed off were really solutions she was looking for. But, he did have a point, maybe it really wouldn't do her much good to write a letter about the problem. The bookstore would probably throw it out anyway; the staff didn't seem to be keen on her trouble-making.
And somewhere deep inside her tiny, frozen heart, Taquita thought the idea playing games, making up stories, and eating cupcakes sounded a lot of fun. She would never admit that out loud though.
She smiled and gave a deep chuckle. The noise shocked her, as she wasn't accustom to having something like that come out of her mouth. "Waddle, I like the way you think, but we should really do them in a different order. Let's make a game of racing to go get cupcakes. First one there eats on the last one's dime! Besides, I don't think it'd be very good for either of us to come up with stories on an empty stomach."
As if on cue, a gurgle-noise came from her belly. "Oh my. All this worrying about this letter made me work up an appetite." The strange laugh came out of Taquita again. She once more took up her dramatic pose, "I feel as if I may die without a cupcake!"

Babby Waddle could practically see the icy exterior his new pal wore begin to melt a bit. Must be the cupcakes, he thought. Definitely cupcakes. He giggled when Taquita smiled; she looked truly started by her own laugh! "I like the idea of that!" Waddle exclaimed. "Cupcakes first, anyday!" On cue from Taquita's rumbly tummy and proclamation, Waddle lept up, and crouched in an awkward imitation of a racer's ready position. He exclaimed, "ALRIGHT then, let's go! Ready, 1,2,3,GO!" He dashed off down the street, giggling madly in his awkward, jiggly gait towards Bonbon's cafe. "FOR CUPCAAAAAAAAAAAAKES!"

Taquita frowned and then dashed after Waddle, "Hey! You can't have a head start!" It was pretty clear she was going to lose, but it almost didn't matter. At this moment, she was enjoying playing and being a foal instead of worrying about fuddy-duddy adult things. Of course, quiet time and books would always be her two best friends, but every now and then, it didn't hurt to have fun with new friends.
She called ahead to him, laughing, "Well, if I'm buying, then I'm picking the cupcake flavors, and there's nothing you can do about it."
