User Image A sigh of brisk winter wind drifted between the branches of the trees in the swamp; Twisted Weed inhaled the chill of the coming season and exhaled as the wind died down. The naked branches rustled then silenced, and the overwhelming quiet of the season again took hold. The dark kimeti lifted a hoof, closed his eyes and held his hoof in the air, savoring the sound of nothingness for a moment, then put it down and began slowly drifting through the trees once more.

An odd season, no doubt. Beautiful in its own way. He drifted further, leaving behind a gathering of kimeti. Their voices rose as they spoke, loud and jarring, clashing together. Twisted Weed much preferred the silence of the cold season swamp than to listen to them chatter. He shook his head to move his mane out of his eyes and continued on his way.

User ImageShe enjoyed listening in for them talk. All the kin, just gathering and chatting. Whether it was a family gathering, or a larger festival, she found herself drawn to the fringes, as she listened to their words, their precious voices, to admire them in her soft silence. Sometimes strange fumes would call invitingly, sometimes a kin would see her. But she seldom actually joined in... too easy to seem unfriendly, when it was only that her voice was failing her. She hated her body, her cage. But... it was some sort of painful pleasure just to listen to their idle chatter.

Why do I even do this? she thought to herself, as she stopped listening to a distant conversation about the water frosting up at the edges at night. It doesn't make it any easier... it's not like I'll suddenly be able to talk. She sighed as she started wandering away, still not paying attention to the sound of approaching hoofbeats. It's pointless, really. She stopped as she finally registered the faint click of hooves - other hooves.

User Image He wandered without aim, choosing left or right arbitrarily. As his aimless journey continued, he noticed a flash of color between trunks of trees. Hmm? he thought to himself. What is this? Or rather...who? It was hard to tell precisely what or who it was he saw as dusk crept across the sky, but that color he saw...so vibrant. So intense. A beautiful color he had never seen before. His aimless wandering gained direction and purpose as he began tracing his steps toward this other...creature.

Down the path ahead of him, he finally spotted...it. Her. A beautiful dark kimeti, not unlike himself, so easily lost in the darkness of nighttime as it came down, but for her bright green markings. Unintentionally, he drew closer to her, mesmerized by her markings and her seeming sense of aimlessness.

Motherfather...I have not seen this doe before; who she could be...?

She looked around as she heard the other hooves approach, then stop shortly after hers. Her breath came quick, her ears flicking back as she froze, trying to determine where the other figure was coming up from. That was when she saw it. The light. It was a gorgeous lilac glow, a sort of color she'd never seen before. Two points, likely eyes. And then a series of what looked to be gashes on one paw. She backed up a step as the stranger drew closer, unable to tell anything other than the glow. Don't come any closer!

Her resolve broke as the shadowy figure took another step closer to her, and she started walking backwards, keeping away from him as he approached.

User Image He stopped, noticing her golden eyes widen at the sight of him. After a moment he stepped forward again, wanting to see her closer. He saw her back up and paused once more.

No, no, please don't run... he thought desperately. He moved slightly to the side, out of the shadow of the trees. He bent one foreleg and stretched his decorated other out in front of him. He dropped his head low in a sign of respect and greeting, and hoped this act would calm her. After a few moments, he stood straight again, held his tail low to the ground and his ears back. See? Nothing to fear.

It looked like he was going to charge. He laid his ears back, bowing his head and leaning down into a prime position to jump into action. But... his horns were too far-ack, and didn't curve forwards. She wasn't going to let him try locking horns with her, for sure... she sidled to the side a little bit, blinking with surprise as he didn't turn. His leg and eyes glowed a pale, attractive lilac... and he didn't move. She walked up alongside him, very hesitantly, and making sure to keep a length of at least three kimeti between them. Maybe... maybe he wasn't going to charge? she thought, hesitant at first. Maybe he was trying to keep form scaring me.

She liked this idea a lot more than she'd liked the former one. Maybe she would give him the benefit of the doubt - she was one of the fastest sprinters she knew when it came down to it, so she would probably stand a good chance at running away if he was anything less than kind. Her decision made, she started sidling towards him, very curious about his glows. She stopped when she was about a half-kimeti length from him, peering at the lilac marks on him. Were they scars? Or paint? Maybe fur markings... she looked at him and cocked her head, in a silent question.

User Image He watched her dance around him cautiously, and stood still. Hopefully she would determine for herself there was nothing to be afraid of about him.

But...her eyes. They burned with so much...so much what? He wasn't fully sure. There was something there, behind those brilliant golden eyes.

His own lilac eyes drifted across her again, taking full advantage of her slow approach to take in her bright green markings.

Twisted Weed noticed her fixation on his forearm, the decorated lilac glow that dimly lit the air around him. He cocked his head back to her, shaking his head and gently shrugging his shoulders in response to her inquisitive gaze. Guessing at her unvoiced question, he did not know why or what caused it.

And still the silence...fascinating. Maybe she, too, understands the value and richness of silence.
